U.S. Representative-elect Eugene Vindman, a Virginia Democrat, floated the idea of a defamation lawsuit against Elon Musk on MSNBC on Saturday after the tech billionaire called his twin brother a traitor. On Wednesday, Musk—who President-elect Donald Trump tapped to lead a proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with biotech entrepreneur and ex-Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy —suggested retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who testified against Trump at his first impeachment in 2019 during his first presidency "committed treason" after remarks he made in an October MSNBC interview about Musk circulated online this week. "Vindman is on the payroll of Ukrainian oligarchs and has committed treason against the United States, for which he will pay the appropriate penalty," Musk wrote on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter . Treason is a federal crime and Article III Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution says "[t]reason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort." Alexander Vindman , who worked as a top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council (NSC) before Trump fired him after he testified against the then-president, has denied Musk's claims, calling them "false and completely unfounded" in an X post on Wednesday. When asked about Musk's recent comments on MSNBC's The Weekend on Saturday morning, Eugene Vindman, who will begin his first term in Congress in January, said, "I would say that if anybody's on the cusp of having to pay it may be Elon Musk because his comments are really false and defamatory, no basis in fact." He added: "So I think he needs to dial back what he said. My brother served honorably in the Army, he's fought and bled on battlefields for this country, and every statement that Elon Musk made is false. So, I think he needs to dial that back. Otherwise, he is the one in jeopardy of having to pay for defamation." Eugene Vindman played a role in reporting the July 2019 phone call between then-President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that was at the center of Trump's first impeachment. When announcing his run for Congress, Vindman said he was doing so "to defend our nation against the clear and present danger of Donald Trump..." Newsweek reached out to Eugene Vindman's campaign and a representative for Alexander Vindman via email for comment, as well as X via email for comment from Musk late Saturday morning. What Did Alexander Vindman Say About Elon Musk? As this year's presidential race between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris , winded down, Alexander Vindman told MSNBC in October that Russia was using people like Trump to "sow discord." "Clearly [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has a type. He likes narcissists and egomaniacs that he knows as a case officer can easily pander to manipulate, to do his dirty work," Alexander Vindman said. "Russia has been using different levers—whether that's corruption networks, in this case, it's influencers like Donald Trump, like Elon Musk, to kind of sow discord." The Wall Street Journal reported in October that Musk has been in regular contact with Putin since late 2022. Their discussions allegedly covered personal topics, business interests, and geopolitical issues, occasionally involving high-ranking Russian officials like Sergei Kiriyenko, Putin's first deputy chief of staff. Musk didn't respond to the Journal 's requests for comment on the story, but he did respond to the story on X, writing in one post late last month, "Welp, the Swamp's 'Trump is Hitler' didn't work. Might as well give 'Elon is a Russian agent' a whirl." Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly spoken with Putin as many as seven times since he left the White House in 2021, as recently as this year, according to legendary journalist Bob Woodward's latest book, War . Woodward's source for this reporting was an unnamed Trump aide. Trump previously told ABC News that the reporting is "false," adding that Woodward is "a storyteller. A bad one. And he's lost his marbles." Responding to Musk on Wednesday, Alexander Vindman said, "I served in the military for nearly 22 years and my loyalty is to supporting the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. That's why I reported presidential corruption when I witnessed an effort to steal an election. That report was in classified channels and when called by Congress to testify about presidential corruption I did so, as required by law," referring to his involvement in Trump's first impeachment. "You, Elon, appear to believe you can act with impunity and are attempting to silence your critics. I'm not intimidated," he added. This isn't the first time Alexander Vindman and Musk have clashed. In 2022, the two engaged in a heated exchange on social media when Vindman called Musk a "purveyor of hate and division" in response to Musk labeling him a "puppet & puppeteer." Meanwhile, Alexander Vindman's testimony helped impeach Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in December 2019. The charges were in relation to a phone call between Trump and Zelensky in July of that year, in which Trump allegedly threatened to withhold U.S. foreign aid money until Zelensky promised to investigate now-President Joe Biden , who was a leading Democratic 2020 candidate at the time, and his son Hunter Biden . Northwest B.C. First Nation Nadleh Whut’en has confirmed the identification of potential unmarked graves at the site of the former Lejac Indian Residential School, located at Tseyaz Bunk’ut near Fraser Lake. Earlier in May, the First Nation had said it would search the residential school site using both ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry to detect irregularities underground. Lejac Indian Residential School operated from 1922 to 1976, impacting children from over 70 Nations. Nadleh Whut’en's announcement on November 30 follows nearly two years of geophysical surveys that began after Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation revealed in 2021 that they had identified around 200 potential burial sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Nadleh Whut’en said the preliminary findings from GPR and magnetometry surveys at Lejac uncovered geophysical signatures consistent with burials. These results are part of ongoing efforts to locate and honour the children who died while attending residential schools in Canada, the First Nation said. The survey, conducted by the guiding team of the project, which translates to "Let's Look for our Children" in Dakelh, covers a 142,500 square-meter area (about 27 football fields). The research is a response to survivor testimony and archival records that suggest numerous children may have been buried in unmarked graves at Lejac. During its operation, at least 7,850 Indigenous children, including day scholars, attended the residential school, which subjected students to harsh conditions, including forced labor, abuse, and the loss of cultural identity. The school’s cemetery, where some graves are marked, has long been known to survivors. However, the recent surveys suggest there are additional unmarked graves that have not been accounted for. “The work is hard and it takes a long time – and we are bringing information forward as we receive it because survivors have a right to know,” Nadleh Whut’en Chief Beverly Ketlo said about the importance of these findings. The Lejac Indian Residential School has had an active cemetery on the grounds since it was founded in 1922. "We have always known that there were children buried at Lejac because many of their graves are marked in a cemetery. I want you to ask yourself if your elementary school had a cemetery,” Ketlo added. Ketlo said this is not just a thing of the past but the horrors experienced at Lejac are still very real for the survivors who lived through this "genocide.” “Lejac relentlessly taught the children that they were inferior. They were forcibly taken from their families, lands, and cultures, leading them to believe that everything about their identity was wrong,” she said. The geophysical surveys, which were conducted in winter 2023 and spring/summer 2024, used advanced technologies to detect disturbances beneath the surface that could indicate burial sites. GPR sends radar pulses into the ground, revealing underground conditions, while magnetometry detects metal objects and magnetic changes. This data is being analyzed by two independent teams of experts and will guide future steps in the search for missing children. Former Chief Archie Patrick of Stellat’en First Nation, a survivor of Lejac, expressed hope that these efforts would help bring justice to those affected. “Lejac is still with me. I continue to deal with the upheaval of being taken from my parents, and the daily trauma of living at that place. But I am so pleased that the stories of survivors are finally being brought to light.” The findings are part of ongoing work, and no immediate plans for excavation or exhumation have been made. The guiding team, made up of survivors and inter-generational survivors, is overseeing the research and will determine the next steps. We’ll expect a real good game.” Purdy’s throwing-shoulder soreness will force him to miss his first game due to injury since becoming the 49ers’ starting quarterback nearly two years ago, and that thrusts ninth-year journeyman Brandon Allen into his 10th career start and first since 2021 with Cincinnati. Bosa’s oblique and hip injuries will sideline him for his first game of this wobbly season. Also ruled out were cornerback Charvarius Ward (personal), return specialist Jacob Cowing (concussion), defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin) and linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee), while left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is questionable as a game-time decision for a second straight game. Tight end George Kittle (hamstring) and running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) are good to go for an offense that must make do without Purdy at the NFL’s most historic venue. Allen, who last threw a regular-season pass in 2022 as Joe Burrow’s backup in Cincinnati, will guide the 49ers’ offense in a key game as San Francisco aims to make a playoff push. “It’s an opportunity,” Allen said. “The circumstances are what they are. But the way it responded this week, it’s really up in the air for next week. Ward, mourning the death of his 23-month-old daughter, was declared out but Shanahan hoped to have the All-Pro cornerback next week when the 49ers visit Buffalo. “He’s taken three full weeks off,” Shanahan said. “It’s not like dealing with all that stuff he’s getting workouts in and all that. We’re just happy to get him back in the building this week. We don’t want to put any pressure on him, hopefully he’ll be good to go next week.” Among those listed as questionable is guard/center Jon Feliciano, whose 21-day window of practicing while on injured reserve is about to expire. If the 49ers don’t put Feliciano on the 53-man roster by Monday, he’ll spend the rest of the season on injured reserve. PACKERS INJURIES Cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) was ruled out after being unable to practice all week, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) also will not suit up for Green Bay’s defense. Doohan's promotion was formally announced back in August, but paddock rumours recently suggested he might be snubbed for Williams star Franco Colapinto . But Alpine have confirmed the 21-year-old Aussie will feature by announcing his number for next season. 'We're looking forward to seeing No.7 on the A525,' the team posted on social media. Doohan spoke of his excitement about his rookie F1 campaign. 'So, that's it. Number 7 will be my race number for 2025,' Doohan said in a social media post.
