The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .Former Nebraska head coach Scott Frost has landed his first college job since his time with the Huskers, and it's a familiar location. Frost is set to take over at UCF, the program he coached from 2016-17 before heading to Nebraska, according to multiple reports. 247Sports and The Orlando Sentinel reported the news Saturday. Previous reported indicated that UCF was down to two candidates, Frost and UNLV head coach Barry Odom, in its quest to replace the fired Gus Malzahn. The Knights chose to reunite with Frost over the 48-year-old Odom, who led UNLV to a 10-win season this fall. Frost rebuilt a UCF football program coming off a winless season into a six-win squad, then a 13-0 team during the 2017 season which stands as the best in UCF's program history. Frost had been out of the college game since his firing at Nebraska in September 2022. He compiled a 16-31 record at his alma mater, completing four losing seasons before being fired three games into the 2022 campaign. The former Nebraska head coach's first job since was with the Los Angeles Rams this fall, where he briefly worked as an analyst. Having failed to rebuild at Nebraska, the 49-year-old Frost now returns to the school where he thrived as an up-and-coming offensive coach. Get local news delivered to your inbox!game name

US President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Pentagon nominee Pete Hegseth, citing the Ivy League-educated former Fox News host's "charisma" and calling him "a WINNER" even as the nomination faces headwinds in Congress amid allegations of misconduct. Login or signup to continue reading A 44-year-old Army National Guard veteran, Hegseth has vowed to continue fighting for the top Department of Defence job and spent the week meeting with senators as some key lawmakers have said they are not yet ready to support him. "Pete Hegseth is doing very well. His support is strong and deep," Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform. "He will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defence, one who leads with charisma and skill. Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!" "Thank you Mr. President. Like you, we will never back down," Hegseth responded. Trump's fellow Republicans will take control of the Senate next month ahead of his January 20 inauguration. If Democrats remain united against Hegseth, he can only afford to lose support from three Republicans and still win Senate approval. Trump has weighed alternative Republican nominees, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Joni Ernst and Representative Mike Waltz, who Trump has already picked for national security adviser, sources told Reuters earlier this week. Ernst, a senior Armed Services Committee member who on Thursday said she was not yet ready to back Hegseth, posted on Friday that she planned to meet him next week. "At a minimum, we agree that he deserves the opportunity to lay out his vision for our warfighters at a fair hearing," she wrote on X. Hegseth served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and has two Bronze Stars. But he has been criticised for lacking the management experience needed to lead 1.3 million active-duty service members and the nearly one million civilians who work for the nation's military. A California police report showed a woman filed a sexual assault complaint in 2017. Hegseth was never charged and has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer told CNN late Thursday that they may take legal action against the woman if Hegseth is not confirmed. On Wednesday, Hegseth told Sirius XM that he has "never had a drinking problem" but would nonetheless not drink alcohol if confirmed as defence secretary. Ernst, herself a combat veteran and sexual assault survivor, on Thursday said there must be a very thorough vetting process and that senators wanted "that any allegations have been cleared." Other Republicans offered tepid support. Two other Trump nominees have already ended their bids for top jobs: former Representative Matt Gaetz for US attorney general and Florida sheriff Chad Chronister for head of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman said the party could not buck the trend in Ireland of junior coalition partners in Fine Gael and Fianna Fail governments losing support in subsequent elections. He said they expected to retain two to three seats out of the 12 they had won in the 2020 election on the back of a worldwide “Green wave”. “Undoubtedly it’s a disappointing result for our party today,” Mr O’Gorman told reporters in Ongar, Dublin. “It’s hard for a smaller party in government, that’s long been the tradition, the history in Ireland. We hoped going into the election to buck that but we haven’t been able to buck that today.” Mr O’Gorman, a candidate in Dublin West, is among the outgoing Green Party TDs in a battle to retain their seats. Culture Minister Catherine Martin, who is fighting to remain a Green Party TD for Dublin Rathdown, said it was a “very tight” race in her four-seat constituency. “We go in (to government) not afraid of that because the issue of the climate and biodiversity crisis is (greater) than our survival,” she said on RTE Radio. “I stand over and am proud of our track record of delivery.” Green candidate in Waterford Marc O Cathasaigh said he would not be “in the shake-up” to retain his seat in that constituency, while junior minister Ossian Smyth looks at risk of losing his seat in Dun Laoghaire. Junior minister Joe O’Brien is expected to lose his seat in Dublin Fingal, Neasa Hourigan is at risk in Dublin Central, while Wicklow’s Steven Matthews garnered just 4% of first preferences. Former Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, who announced his retirement from frontline politics in June, said his party had not had a good day. Arriving at the count centre at the RDS in Dublin, the outgoing environment minister told reporters: “If you don’t get elected you accept that, but you come back stronger and you learn lessons, and we’ve done that in the past and we will do that again.” He added: “No matter what the results today there will be a strong Green Party in Ireland, we have deep roots in the community and it’s a very distinct political philosophy and I think there is still space for that in Irish politics, for sure.” Mr Ryan said he did not believe his decision to retire, and the timing of his announcement, had affected the party’s showing. “Unfortunately – and this is just one of those days – we didn’t get the number of votes,” he said. He added: “We’ll look back and see what are the lessons, and what can we learn and what can we do differently. “It’s just one of those days when we didn’t have a good day.NEW YORK (AP) — The huge rally for U.S. stocks lost momentum on Thursday as Wall Street counted down to a big jobs report that’s coming on Friday. The crypto market had more action, and bitcoin briefly burst to a record above $103,000 before pulling back. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% from the all-time high it had set the day before, its 56th of the year so far, to shave a bit off what’s set to be one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 248 points, or 0.6%, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.2% from its own record set the day before. Bitcoin powered above $100,000 for the first time the night before, after President-elect Donald Trump chose Paul Atkins, who's seen as a crypto advocate, as his nominee to head the Securities and Exchange Commission. The cryptocurrency has climbed dramatically from less than $70,000 on Election Day, but it fell back as Thursday progressed toward $99,000, according to CoinDesk. Sharp swings for bitcoin are nothing new, and they took stocks of companies enmeshed in the crypto world on a similar ride. After rising as much as 9% in early trading, MicroStrategy, a company that’s been raising cash just to buy bitcoin, swung to a loss of 4.8%. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global fell 3.1% after likewise erasing a big early gain. Elsewhere on Wall Street, stocks of airlines helped lead the way following the latest bumps up to financial forecasts from carriers. American Airlines Group soared 16.8% after saying it’s making more in revenue during the last three months of 2024 than it expected, and it will likely make a bigger profit than it had earlier forecast. The airline also chose Citi to be its exclusive partner for credit cards that give miles in its loyalty program. That should help its cash coming in from co-branded credit card and other partners grow by about 10% annually. Southwest Airlines climbed 2% after saying it’s seeing stronger demand from leisure travelers than it expected. It also raised its forecast for revenue for the holiday traveling season. On the losing end of Wall Street was Synposys, which tumbled 12.4%. The supplier for the semiconductor industry reported better profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected, but it also warned of “continued macro uncertainties” and gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell short of some analysts’ estimates. American Eagle Outfitters fell even more, 14.3%, after the retailer said it’s preparing for “potential choppiness” outside of peak selling periods. It was reminiscent of a warning from Foot Locker earlier in the week and raised more concerns about how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain. Solid spending by U.S. consumers has been one of the main reasons the U.S. economy has avoided a recession that earlier seemed inevitable after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates to crush inflation. But shoppers are now contending with still-high prices and a slowing job market . This week’s highlight for Wall Street will be Friday’s jobs report from the U.S. government, which will show how many people employers hired and fired last month. A report on Thursday said the number of U.S. workers applying for unemployment benefits rose last week but remains at historically healthy levels. Expectations are high that the Fed will cut its main interest rate again when it meets in two weeks. The Fed began easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high in September, hoping to offer more support for the job market. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down to 4.17% from 4.18% late Wednesday. The S&P 500 fell 11.38 points to 6,075.11. The Dow sank 248.33 to 44,765.71, and the Nasdaq composite lost 34.86 to 19,700.26. In stock markets abroad, indexes were mostly calm in Europe after far-right and left-wing lawmakers in France joined together to vote on a no-confidence motion that will force Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his Cabinet to resign. The CAC 40 index in Paris added 0.4%. In South Korea, the Kospi fell 0.9% to compound its 1.4% decline from the day before. President Yoon Suk Yeol was facing possible impeachment after he suddenly declared martial law on Tuesday night. He revoked the martial law declaration six hours later. Crude oil prices slipped after eight members of the OPEC+ alliance of oil exporting countries decided to put off increasing oil production. The best money advice is usually boring and unsexy, which explains why no one wants to hear it. But CPA Rachel Wooten says these tips can help you save more for retirement and your other goals. She advises maxing out your HSA, avoiding lifestyle creep, and starting to save for retirement ASAP. The best money advice is decidedly unsexy. Just do a quick Google search, and you'll find dozens of books, financial advisors , and self-made millionaires all preaching the same thing: invest for the long term, don't try to time the market, and let your investments compound over many years. Most of us would rather cover our ears and hope to get rich quick. When I spoke with Rachel Wooten, a CPA and then-finance director at the Flint Group, she confirmed that there's plenty of money advice no one wants to hear, but everyone should follow. Here are four things she wants you to know. 1. Invest the maximum possible in your health savings account When it comes to retirement planning , most of us have heard that we should max out our IRA or 401(k) . But a just-as-helpful retirement tool that you should also max out is your health savings account. An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account created in 2003 to help people with high-deductible health plans pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses. Although the purpose of an HSA is to save money for inevitable healthcare expenses, you can just as easily use your HSA as an investing tool. "The HSA is the only account that allows you to pay no taxes at all on contributions, growth, or withdrawals," says Wooten. "Invest your HSA funds and avoid reimbursing yourself for those expensive braces or doctor visits, and you'll come out ahead in the long run." Also, if you leave your HSA money in your account until age 65, you can withdraw your HSA funds for non-medical expenses at any point. 2. Put your investments on auto-pilot After juggling work, family, and hobbies, the last thing most of us want to think about is actively trading a portfolio. That's why one of the best ways to set yourself up for the future is through an employer-sponsored retirement plan. These are attractive, passive options that most employees can take advantage of. All you have to do is select how much of your paycheck you want to contribute each pay period. The best strategy is to put your investments in a total market index fund or exchange-traded fund , and then forget them. "Sure, trading stocks is fun and a lot more interesting than this boring strategy, but over the long term, you are more likely to lose money actively trading than to beat market returns," Wooten says. 3. Avoid lifestyle creep It's not what you make. It's what you keep. Unfortunately, this idea gets lost on most people after they get a raise. "After a salary increase, many people immediately consider upgrading their house or vehicle. However, studies have shown that cars, houses, etc., can become quickly acclimated to, so the uplift in happiness is short-lived," Wooten says. If you can avoid this tendency for lifestyle creep and instead boost your savings and investments when you get a raise or bonus, you can significantly decrease your financial stress. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule. Maybe you've been putting off a house repair or medical emergency for financial reasons. However, to become financially secure, consider upgrades carefully before committing to a higher standard of living. 4. Start saving for retirement as early as possible For most people just starting their careers, it's difficult to set money aside for something as far down the road as retirement. "It's hard to convince a person in their 20s to consider the well-being of their older self, but money stashed away early in your career will have the benefit of compounding doing the heavy lifting for them," says Wooten. To see the importance of investing earlier rather than later, let's look at this example (you can run your own through our free retirement calculator ). Two people save $100 a month for retirement, each has a 5% annual compound rate of return, but one starts at 25, and the other starts at 35. The one who started at 25 will have saved nearly twice as much by age 65. The person who started investing at 25 will have roughly $162,000 in their account, while the person who started at 35 will only have $89,000. This is the power of compound interest . The 25-year-old investor would have only invested $12,000 more of their own money, yet they would have over $70,000 more than the person who started at 35. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — returned home Saturday after his meeting with Donald Trump without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. After the leaders’ hastily arranged dinner Friday night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trudeau spoke of “an excellent conversation” but offered no details. Trump said in a Truth Social post later Saturday that they discussed “many important topics that will require both Countries to work together to address.” For issues in need of such cooperation, Trump cited fentanyl and the “Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration,” fair trade deals “that do not jeopardize American Workers” and the U.S. trade deficit with its ally to the north. Trump asserted that the prime minister had made “a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation” of American families from fentanyl from China reaching the United States through its neighbors. The U.S., he said, “will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic.” The Republican president-elect has a 25% tax on all products from Canada and as one of his first executive orders when he takes office in January. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian border between October 2023 and September 2024 — and Canadian officials say they are ready to make new investments in border security. Trudeau called Trump after the Republican’s social media posts about the tariffs last Monday and they agreed to meet, according to a official familiar with the matter who was not authorized to publicly discuss detail of the private talks. The official said other countries are calling Canadian officials to hear how about how the meeting was arranged and to ask for advice. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, after speaking with Trump on the telephone, said Thursday she was confident would be averted. At the dinner that was said to last three hours, Trump said he and Trudeau also discussed energy, trade and the Arctic. A second official cited defense, Ukraine, NATO, China, the Mideast, pipelines and the Group of Seven meeting in Canada next year as other issues that arose. Trump, during his first term as president, once called Trudeau but it was the prime minister who was the first G7 leader to visit Trump since the Nov. 5 election. “Tariffs are a crucial issue for Canada and a bold move was in order. Perhaps it was a risk, but a risk worth taking,” Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. Trudeau had said before leaving from Friday that Trump was elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries but now was talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products, including potatoes from Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada. “It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said. “Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for Americans citizens as well and hurting American industry and business,” he added. The threatened tariffs could essentially blow up the North American trade pact that Trump’s team negotiated during his first term. Trudeau noted they were able to successfully renegotiate the deal, which he calls a “win win” for both countries. When Trump imposed higher tariffs as president, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced against the U.S. in a response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US $2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing in for national security. Canada is one of the most trade-dependent countries in the world, and 77% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S. ___ Gillies reported from Toronto. NoneAnna Kane, the former wife of NHL player Evander Kane, has revealed her identity as one of the accusers in a sexual assault lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs. Court documents unveiled her name after a judge required her to amend her lawsuit if she wished to proceed, TMZ has reported. Who Is Anna Kane? There isn't much public information about Anna Kane. She rose to prominence for her marriage to Edmonton Oilers star Evander Kane in 2018. She accused Evander Kane of transgressions against her and posted several screenshots of her exchanges with the Oilers star on social media, including Evander Kane being a gambling addict. The NHL launched an investigation into Evander Kane after that. She filed for divorce in July 2021 and the couple had a child together. Anna Kane's Accusations Against Diddy According to TMZ, Kane's complaint claims that in 2003, when she was seventeen years old, Diddy sexually assaulted her. She states that after a meeting in Detroit, Harve Pierre, the head of Bad Boy Entertainment, invited her to New York, which is when the incident happened. According to Kane, Pierre called her "hot," brought up Diddy, and offered to put her on a private plane so she could meet the music tycoon. Kane said that after being brought to a recording studio in New York, where she was given booze and narcotics, she was assaulted. According to her, Diddy reportedly assaulted her against her will in a restroom after taking her there. As proof of her claim, Kane also published pictures of the studio meeting. She said she was the girl in the pictures, even though her face is blurred, according to TMZ. Bitcoin has surpassed the $100,000 mark as the post-election rally continues. What's next? The Los Angeles Galaxy will aim to complete one of the most remarkable transformations in Major League Soccer history on Saturday when they host the New York Red Bulls chasing a record-extending sixth MLS Cup crown. A year ago, the California franchise had hit rock bottom, plummeting to their worst ever regular season record to finish one place off the bottom of the Western Conference. The team that had once been a home to the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were engulfed in crisis, with fans boycotting fixtures after nearly a decade of failure on the field. Moreover, the Galaxy's status as one of MLS's glamour clubs had been diminished by the arrival of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, as well as the emergence of city rivals Los Angeles FC, winners of the MLS Cup in 2022. The febrile atmosphere at the Galaxy prompted team ownership to shake up their front office, with Will Kuntz appointed general manager to replace long-time predecessor Chris Klein, who was fired in May 2023. The turnaround since those changes has been dramatic. After winning just eight fixtures in the 2023 season, the Galaxy under head coach Greg Vanney won a record-equalling 19 games this season to finish joint top of the table, second only to leaders LAFC on goal difference. The Galaxy kept up their winning ways in the postseason, swatting aside Colorado 9-1 on aggregate to wrap up their first round series, before thrashing Minnesota United 6-2 and then squeezing past Seattle 1-0 last weekend. Those results have left the club on the threshold of a first MLS Cup title since 2014 and a record sixth championship overall. Victory in Saturday's showpiece in Carson would be especially sweet for Vanney, who appeared in three MLS Cup finals with the Galaxy as a player in 1996, 1999 and 2001 -- and lost all three. Reflecting on his team's journey to this year's final, Vanney said this week his team had thrived under the pressure of being expected to challenge for silverware. "The expectation is to be in games like this, to win trophies and win championships," Vanney said. "This group has come out and attacked it from day one and hasn't been afraid of it or in awe of it -- and that's one of the beauties of this group. "I'm excited for this group and this opportunity and now the objective is to win it and put the stamp on it, rewriting a new group of players and new legacy for this organisation." Vanney's task has become more complicated by an injury to star midfielder Riqui Puig, who suffered torn knee ligaments in last week's Western Conference final win over Seattle and will miss Saturday's game. "He's the ultimate competitor," Vanney said. "He wants to win, compete, and take responsibility on the field. He drives the team in so many ways. "We're going to have to adapt, and we're going to have to adapt in a collective way." The Galaxy meanwhile will be wary of a New York Red Bulls line-up that have ripped up the form book en route to the final. After finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference -- 27 points behind leaders Inter Miami -- the Red Bulls stunned reigning champions Columbus in the first round of the playoffs before wins on the road over rivals New York City FC and Orlando to book their place in their first MLS Cup since 2008. New York's Scotland international midfielder Lewis Morgan says the team is unfazed by Saturday's assignment in Los Angeles. "For me, it doesn't really matter where it is: it's playoff football," Morgan said this week. "It's not the regular season. These games are more cagey. You go 1-0 up, we defend a little bit deeper and we're relying on guys at the back. There have been massive performances." rcw/bbAskew scores 28 as Long Beach State beats Hawaii 76-68

Hyderabad: Forests and endowments minister Konda Surekha has expressed suspicion on the handiwork of former secretary of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) and BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar in the recent cases of food poisoning being reported in those institutions. Addressing media in Hyderabad on Saturday, she also suspected the hand of BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) behind the incidents, as per the inputs from the intelligence. She said that RS Praveen Kumar had many followers in the Gurukuls, and that she was suspecting that they were trying to create unrest by blaming the state government for those food poisoning incidents, seemingly at the behest of KTR. She also alleged that there were irregularities to the tune of crores in Gurukuls, when RS Praveen Kumar was heading the administration of those institutions, “During the previous government, there was no effort made by those in power to inspect the Gurukuls and check the quality of education and facilities being offered to students there. After Congress came to power we have been doing that. Only one incident of food poisoning happened in the present government, which is unfortunate. With a plan they are trying to prevent the government from doing its work. I believe that there is the hand of RS Praveen Kumar in the incidents of food poisoning being reported in the state,” she told the media. She also said that BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) was giving more importance to his daughter K Kavitha, and that was the reason why KTR was feeling left-out. She also said that while Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao and Kavitha formed a team, KTR was feeling isolated. In a strong rebuttal of Surekha’s comments, Praveen Kumar dared the state government to arrest him if he was found to have perpetrated any wrongdoing. “Konda Surekha lost her credibility when she got Telangana activists attacked at Manukota railway station during Telangana movement. She doesn’t even deserve to be a minister. I neglected my own children to ensure the children from these Gurukuls excelled in their careers. The results speak loud about what I could achieve. Konda Surekha should stop holding press meets,” he remarked.Minnesota will try to bounce back from two straight losses when it hosts Bethune-Cookman on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers (5-3) are coming off a 57-51 loss against Wake Forest on Friday, which followed a 68-66 overtime loss against Wichita State on Thursday. Both games took place at the ESPN Events Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Minnesota coach Ben Johnson cited inconsistency on offense as the main reason for his team's recent skid. "We're painfully figuring that out," Johnson said. "I thought our defense, though, (Thursday and Friday) has proven this is a top-40 or top-30 defense. We've got to be able to show up with offense and free throws." Golden Gophers starter Lu'Cye Patterson said he and his teammates remain confident in their potential as the Big Ten conference season approaches. "We just have to keep doing what we're supposed to do and keep our level of defensive play up," Patterson said. "It's going to win us a lot of games. The offense is going to come." Bethune-Cookman (2-5) will try to play spoiler on the road. The Wildcats have split their past two games as they beat North Dakota 79-67 on Tuesday and lost to Gardner-Webb 79-64 on Wednesday, both games played in the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. Four players for Bethune-Cookman scored in double digits in their most recent game. Reggie Ward Jr. and Daniel Rouzan led the way with 14 points apiece, Trey Thomas scored 13 and Brayon Freeman chipped in 10. Bethune-Cookman is coached by Reggie Theus, who enjoyed a long NBA career and coached the Sacramento Kings for parts of two seasons. Theus said the Wildcats were in better position to compete this season compared with a season ago. "We've got a lot of depth, and we have age and experience," Theus said. "One of the biggest differences in our team is that we have great size now, where last year we were pretty small." Dawson Garcia leads Minnesota with 18.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Patterson is next with 10.1 points per contest. Bethune-Cookman is led by Freeman, who is averaging 15.9 points per game. Thomas (11.7 points per game) and Ward Jr. (11.0) also are scoring in double digits. --Field Level MediaThe Biden administration boasted in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report released Thursday about the unprecedented prosecution of a California man for “smuggling greenhouse gases” across the border from Mexico and selling them online. Michael Hart, 58, was arrested in March and pleaded guilty in September to charges related to transporting refrigerants into the US to peddle on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and other online vendors between June and December 2022. Biden’s EPA touted the crackdown on Hart, the first-ever person charged for climate change-related bootlegging of refrigerants — namely, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HFCs) — without the agency’s approval, in its report . When charging the San Diego resident earlier this year, US Attorney Tara McGrath vowed “it will not be the last” case of its kind. “We are using every means possible to protect our planet from the harm caused by toxic pollutants, including bringing criminal charges,” the prosecutor from the Southern District of California said . Hart concealed the refrigerants, or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HFCs), under a tarp and some tools in his pickup truck when crossing the border, according to federal prosecutors. The importation of HFCs, a synthetic refrigerant typically used in older air conditioning systems, is outlawed under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020 — passed as part of a government spending bill in December of that year. In total, the EPA report revealed 121 criminal defendants have been charged with climate crimes in 2024 — the highest amount since Biden, 82, took office — and that it concluded more than 1,850 civil cases. The environmental authority also reported slapping $1.7 billion in penalties on climate offenders in the latest fiscal year, the highest level reached under Biden. The agency said its “enhanced efforts” at enforcing environmental laws held “polluters accountable” and provided “substantial environmental and public health benefits.” “In Fiscal Year 2024, EPA’s enforcement and compliance assurance program produced its strongest results since 2017, focusing on efforts to combat climate change and tackling some of the nation’s most significant environmental threats to our shared air, water and land,” David Uhlmann, the assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, said in a statement. “The progress made under the Biden-Harris Administration has sent a clear signal that polluters will be held accountable and that protecting communities from harm is a top priority,” he added. Trump, who actually signed into law the greenhouse gas bill that resulted in Hart’s arrest, albeit as part of a government funding package, has tapped former New York GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin to serve as administrator of the EPA in his incoming administration. In an interview with the Associated Press, Uhlmann indicated that he expects the EPA under Trump to continue to hold polluters accountable. “Upholding the rule of law and making sure that polluters are held accountable and communities are protected from harmful pollution is not a partisan matter,” the EPA official said. “We do enforcement at EPA based on the law, based on the facts, without regard to politics.” “So, you know, communities should expect that EPA will continue to protect them from harmful pollution,” he added. Hart faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing date is scheduled for Dec. 9.None
