I loved working with Dan and Dominic and feel so proud of what we have created."A group of physiotherapy patients is still searching for ways to maintain their health after the closure of the pool at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH). “I have deteriorated greatly since July when they closed the pool, even though I'm doing chair exercises and everything I can to keep physically fit,” said Sally Martyn, a patient who used the pool. Martyn, the former mayor of Central Elgin, has spearheaded a group who were trying to keep the pool open, but are now searching for alternate solutions. Martyn got her long-awaited meeting with hospital management and the STEGH board of directors, but didn’t get the answers she was hoping for. “We want to reiterate that the decision to permanently close the therapy pool remains unchanged,” said Karen Davies, CEO of STEGH in a statement to CTV News. “This decision is based on our commitment to the safe operation of our hospital facilities.” The pool has been closed since July when failure caused water to enter the south electrical mechanical room. A report identified repair costs at approximately $350,000. The therapy pool at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital has been closed since July 2024 after a failure led to water leaking into the mechanical room (Brent Lale/CTV News London) “However, even if these repairs were completed, they would not eliminate the ongoing risk of catastrophic failure,” added Davies. “Our responsibility to ensure the safe operations of our hospital and the wellbeing of our patients and staff will take precedence.” Martyn said the group “was willing to raise the money to protect those systems , but they (STEGH) still won't even consider it.” The STEGH pool was rented and used by tenant Talbot Trail Physiotherapy. Owner Chris Streib has now been searching for a new location, where he could install a therapy pool. “We've been looking in St. Thomas, trying to find anywhere from a warehouse space to some clinical space that could be three to five thousand square feet to house a pool that we actually could drop into that space,” said Streib. Streib said Hollandia Pools and Spas from London, Ont. could get a new pool up and running quickly if they can find the right space. With the only available space he could find for rent in the area at 15,000 square feet, he is now appealing to the public to help with a spot to install a pool. “Would just need an open space, and some access to water, hydro and gas to heat the pool,” said Streib. “They could literally cement form a pool in on a slab concrete and have that up and running in two months for us.” Martyn said there are more than 600 patients who are looking for therapy. They have strong backing and could come with the money to fund this endeavor. “We're willing to fundraise and do this because we're all so desperate for a hydrotherapy pool,” said Martyn. “We've looked into alternatives in London, but we have not been able to find anything that people are willing or able to get to because of their ability to walk or not walk.” Streib said the benefits of hydrotherapy are obvious. “I've always said this pool was a hidden gem in the county,” said Streib. We can get people through their rehab programs in almost half the time, and people that are chronically suffering from disability, they can get into a pool and prevent them from being hospitalized or needing further care.” Streib said the City of St. Thomas is on track to have a pool in place within the next five years and are trying to accelerate that timeline. “We’re looking for a space that could be anywhere from the two-to-five years or even further beyond,” said Streib. For small finance banks, the target is higher at 75%. One of the reasons for the private sector banks to achieve their priority sector target is that they are now allowed to invest in priority sector lending certificates (PSLCs). These are issued against banks' priority sector loans under various sub-targets and general categories. Banks use PSLCs to guard against shortfalls. The total trading volume of PSLCs climbed 26% in FY24, primarily led by PSLC-General. Among the four PSLC categories, the small and marginal farmers category registered the highest trading volume, partly reflecting specialisation by a few banks in lending to this category of borrowers and the inability of other banks to meet sub-targets through direct lending, the RBI said in its report on Trends and Progress of Banking. Opposition Leader John Pesutto defamed ousted Liberal MP Moira Deeming, the Federal Court has found, in a high-stakes judgment that could cost him his job. Pesutto was ordered to pay Deeming $300,000 for the damage to her reputation in a damning judgment that found he had defamed her on five separate occasions. Credit: AAPIMAGE Deeming alleged she had been “tarred with the Nazi brush” as part of Pesutto’s “campaign” to expel her from the parliamentary Liberal Party, her barrister Sue Chrysanthou, SC, had told the court. Deeming, who now sits on the crossbench of the Victorian Parliament, had helped organise the Let Women Speak rally on March 18, 2023. Neo-Nazis were among several groups of protesters that arrived at the steps of parliament that day. She condemned the men, said they were not there to support her cause, and told the court she did not see them until they were escorted away by police. Pesutto moved to expel Deeming from the parliamentary party in the following days. She was instead suspended in a last-minute compromise, but was ultimately expelled weeks later, after threatening to bring in lawyers. Handing down his decision on Thursday after hearing more than three weeks of evidence that damaged the party room and threatened stability, Justice David O’Callaghan agreed Pesutto had defamed Deeming. Rumblings to overthrow Pesutto in October did not amount to anything, but many in the party room had privately accepted that a loss for Pesutto would make his position as leader untenable.By CHRISTINE FERNANDO CHICAGO (AP) — As Donald Trump’s Cabinet begins to take shape, those on both sides of the abortion debate are watching closely for clues about how his picks might affect reproductive rights policy in the president-elect’s second term . Trump’s cabinet picks offer a preview of how his administration could handle abortion after he repeatedly flip-flopped on the issue on the campaign trail. He attempted to distance himself from anti-abortion allies by deferring to states on abortion policy, even while boasting about nominating three Supreme Court justices who helped strike down the constitutional protections for abortion that had stood for half a century. In an NBC News interview that aired Sunday, Trump said he doesn’t plan to restrict medication abortion but also seemed to leave the door open, saying “things change.” “Things do change, but I don’t think it’s going to change at all,” he said. The early lineup of his new administration , including nominations to lead health agencies, the Justice Department and event the Department of Veterans Affairs, has garnered mixed — but generally positive — reactions from anti-abortion groups. Abortion law experts said Trump’s decision to include fewer candidates with deep ties to the anti-abortion movement could indicate that abortion will not be a priority for Trump’s administration. “It almost seems to suggest that President Trump might be focusing his administration in other directions,” said Greer Donley, an associate law professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Karen Stone, vice president of public policy at Planned Parenthood Action Fund , said while many of the nominees have “extensive records against reproductive health care,” some do not. She cautioned against making assumptions based on Trump’s initial cabinet selections. Still, many abortion rights groups are wary, in part because many of the nominees hold strong anti-abortion views even if they do not have direct ties to anti-abortion activists. They’re concerned that an administration filled with top-level officials who are personally opposed to abortion could take steps to restrict access to the procedure and funding. After Trump’s ambiguity about abortion during his campaign, “there’s still a lot we don’t know about what policy is going to look like,” said Mary Ruth Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law. That approach may be revealed as the staffs within key departments are announced. Trump announced he would nominate anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Health and Human Services Department, which anti-abortion forces have long targeted as central to curtailing abortion rights nationwide. Yet Kennedy shifted on the issue during his own presidential campaign. In campaign videos, Kennedy said he supports abortion access until viability , which doctors say is sometime after 21 weeks, although there is no defined timeframe. The role is especially vital amid legal battles over a federal law known as EMTALA, which President Joe Biden’s administration has argued requires emergency abortion access nationwide, and FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. Mini Timmaraju, president of the national abortion rights organization Reproductive Freedom for All, called Kennedy an “unfit, unqualified extremist who cannot be trusted to protect the health, safety and reproductive freedom of American families.” His potential nomination also has caused waves in the anti-abortion movement. Former Vice President Mike Pence , a staunch abortion opponent, urged the Senate to reject Kennedy’s nomination. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said the group had its own concerns about Kennedy. “There’s no question that we need a pro-life HHS secretary,” she said. Fox News correspondent Marty Makary is Trump’s pick to lead the FDA, which plays a critical role in access to medication abortion and contraception. Abortion rights groups have accused him of sharing misinformation about abortion on air. Russell Vought , a staunch anti-abortion conservative, has been nominated for director of the Office of Management and Budget. Vought was a key architect of Project 2025 , a right-wing blueprint for running the federal government. Among other actions to limit reproductive rights, it calls for eliminating access to medication abortion nationwide, cutting Medicaid funding for abortion and restricting access to contraceptive care, especially long-acting reversible contraceptives such as IUD’s. Despite distancing himself from the conservative manifesto on the campaign trail, Trump is stocking his administration with people who played central roles in developing Project 2025. Trump acknowledged that drafters of the report would be part of his incoming administration during the Sunday interview with NBC News, saying “Many of those things I happen to agree with.” “These cabinet appointments all confirm that Project 2025 was in fact the blueprint all along, and the alarm we saw about it was warranted,” said Amy Williams Navarro, director of government relations for Reproductive Freedom for All. Dr. Mehmet Oz , Trump’s choice to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is a former television talk show host who has been accused of hawking dubious medical treatments and products. He voiced contradictory abortion views during his failed Senate run in 2022. Oz has described himself as “strongly pro-life, praised the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , claimed “life starts at conception” and referred to abortion as “murder.” But he also has echoed Trump’s states-rights approach, arguing the federal government should not be involved in abortion decisions. “I want women, doctors, local political leaders, letting the democracy that’s always allowed our nation to thrive to put the best ideas forward so states can decide for themselves,” he said during a Senate debate two years ago. An array of reproductive rights groups opposed his Senate run. As CMS administrator, Oz would be in a key position to determine Medicaid coverage for family planning services and investigate potential EMTALA violations. INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Gov.-elect Mike Braun on Thursday said he will rearrange state agencies into a Cabinet-style model for better efficiency and accountability. Braun said his Cabinet will consist of his chief of staff, the lieutenant governor, the superintendent of the Indiana State Police, the adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard, and eight secretaries responsible for a different policy area. Some of the secretaries’ titles are familiar, namely the secretary of commerce and the secretary of education. Their portfolios will be larger. In addition to the Indiana Economic Development Corp., the secretary of commerce now will oversee the Indiana Destination Development Corp. and the Ports of Indiana. The secretary of education, meanwhile, will oversee the Commission for Higher Education and the School for the Blind and School for the Deaf in addition to the Indiana Department of Education. Other positions are completely new. Chief among them is a secretary of public safety. The Department of Correction, Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and a new Office of School Safety will report to them, though the state police will still report directly to the governor. The Indiana Department of Health, the Family and Social Services Administration and the departments of Child Services and Veterans Affairs will answer to a new secretary of health and family services. Indianapolis Department of Transportation and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will answer to a new secretary of transportation and infrastructure. Braun said in a statement the secretaries will be empowered to drive progress within their policy areas and will be held responsible for agency performance and improvement. The Cabinet will also be allowed to implement cross-government initiatives. “By aligning agencies and reorganizing the executive branch, we can drive accountability for leaders and agencies, promote better coordination and communication between our administration and the Indiana General Assembly, and create efficiency across state government,” Braun said in the statement. She said she was “physically accosted” at the Capitol, and she thanked President-elect Donald Trump for calling her Wednesday morning to check on her condition. “I’m going to be fine just as soon as the pain and soreness subside,” Mace wrote.
