More PwC partners than usual will take early retirement at the end of this year, marking another shake-up at the firm's UK division since the appointment of a new boss, Marco Amitrano, in Spring. PwC's 1,030 UK partners were informed this week via a voice memo from Amitrano that dozens of partners would take early retirement next month, reported. The cohort of early retirees was larger than usual, though one insider disputed that the numbers involved were "significant," Sky News reported. The Big Four firm appointed 60 new UK partners earlier this year. Senior employees at the Big Four consultancies — Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC, all of which are privately held — can be , and some are offered equity ownership in the business. In addition to salary and bonuses, equity partners traditionally receive a share of annual profits. The jump in partners taking early retirement follows a series of changes following Amitrano's elevation to senior partner for the UK and Middle East in April. Amitrano has launched an overhaul of operations in the UK, including creating a standalone technology and artificial intelligence unit and merging other parts of the business to create six new teams, reported in October. Almost all the major consulting firms have been grappling with a slowdown in business this year following the end of the pandemic-era rush on advisory services. The firms have been restructuring divisions, laying off employees, and making cuts to limit revenue decline. have been one area targeted for cuts at EY, Deloitte, and PwC. UK partners at PwC took home an average of £862,000 (about $1.1 million) this financial year, 5% less than they did in 2023. PwC, which is the largest of the Big Four by revenue in the UK, is also facing higher taxes per employee after the country's recently elected Labour government increased the rate of national insurance contributions (a tax on earnings) employers must pay. Councils have had mixed reactions to their slices of the Government's recently-announced £1.6bn investment into road repairs. East Riding Council is to receive over £22 million from the Government's investment in highways maintenance to fill potholes and repair roads, a figure that includes a potential £5,876,000 in 'new funding' which will be delivered if 'incentives' are met. A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: "The council welcomes the news of this latest funding from the Government for road repairs, which is a significant increase on funding awarded in previous years. "This money will be invested in additional maintenance and repair schemes across the East Riding to enhance the safety and quality of our roads and footways. "Our highway network, along with councils nationally, has suffered many years of under-investment and we will continue to work hard to ensure we make the best of the funding we receive from Central Government." Meanwhile, Hull City Council's leader feels longer-term funding is needed. With the council set to receive £4,482,000, Cllr Mike Ross has said: "This funding is no more than a sticking plaster when considering the scale of repairs needed to local roads across Hull. "Recently, the council has done its best to fill as many potholes as possible with less and less core funding. "What is actually needed is the right amount of long-term funding that would enable us to properly invest in repairing the city's roads for the future." Despite Cllr Ross' reservations, the funding has been welcomed by those in the sector. Steve Sinnott, Sales Director at Econ Engineering, the UK’s biggest supplier of road repair equipment, said: "We welcome the Government’s pledge to invest a record £1.6 billion into fixing potholes and repairing local roads. For too long councils haven’t been able to make the repairs they would like to, which then poses a real safety and financial risk for drivers. "However, it’s vital that councils use this new funding wisely. Too often, due to budget constraints, temporary ‘quick fix’ solutions are chosen that fail within months, costing taxpayers more in the long run and leaving roads in a worse state. Councils must adopt a ‘right fix, first time’ approach. "For over 35 years, our Roadmenders and Hotboxes have been supporting councils to deliver longer term solutions, with our technology enabling permanent repairs by keeping asphalt at the correct temperature for lasting results. This approach reduces waste and minimises the need for repeat visits, with councils using this method seeing significant savings and improved road conditions in the long run. "To make Britain’s roads safer and more efficient, we must break the cycle of short-term fixes and invest in long-term solutions that deliver real value for drivers, local authorities and local communities." CHEYENNE – Climb Wyoming received a $50,000 donation from Spectrum on Saturday as part of the company’s $30 million initiative to invest in underserved rural and urban neighborhoods across the country. Spectrum spokesperson Danielle Dunn said the company aims to help 100 communities across the country, and Cheyenne was the 50th community to partake in Spectrum Community Center Assist (SCCA), a program launched in 2021 that revitalizes local community centers and invests in job training programs. “We seek out the organizations that are doing the meaningful work, and if they meet our criteria, then we proceed with the partnership,” Dunn told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. “And, of course, they have to be interested, but usually they are.” Spectrum’s partner organization, Jobs for the Future, helped vet nonprofits that use Spectrum services and recommend organizations that follow SCCA’s mission statement, Dunn said. Climb Wyoming, a local nonprofit that helps low-income single mothers with career training and job placement, was recommended by the partner organization, Dunn said. “The community center has to provide job skills training. So Climb Wyoming is perfect for that, because that's what they do,” Dunn said. “They want their clients to achieve self-sufficiency through career training and job placement. So any place where clients can go and gain new skills, that is pretty much our target.” Since its establishment in 1986, Climb Wyoming has been a national leader in poverty alleviation, leading single mothers to financial independence and "changing the cycle of poverty one family at a time," according to a news release sent Sunday announcing the donation. Along with the $50,000 cash grant, Climb Wyoming also received 25 Chromebooks, a Smartboard and high-speed one-gigabit internet service for its new Spectrum Training and Technology Center. “Investment in the community makes a big difference for families. Funding from partners like Spectrum strengthens the fabric of the Cheyenne community,” said Molly Kruger, chief operating officer of Climb Wyoming, in the release. “We are grateful for this partnership, which not only bolsters families and the workforce, but also underscores the vital role of collaboration between businesses and communities.” Kruger told the WTE that private and public funding helped "to really make the program sustainable." "We really need the funding support of the community, and so we're really grateful that Spectrum understood that," Kruger said. "It really allows us to continue to help more families." Climb Wyoming is holding two public information meetings Dec. 4 at Climb Cheyenne's Office, 123 E. 17th St., from noon-1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. The meetings are the perfect opportunity for interested mothers to learn about the program and upcoming training courses. Child care is not provided for these meetings, and mothers are encouraged to plan accordingly. For more information, call or text 307-316-1446 or visit ClimbWyoming.org . Cowboys shutting down CeeDee Lamb with 2 games to go over receiver's shoulder issueNoneEddie Howe wants even more from in-form Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The 25-year-old Sweden international took his goal tally for the season to 12 in the 3-0 Boxing Day win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park, 10 of them in his last 10 Premier League games, after a challenging start to the new campaign. Isak managed 25 goals in a black and white shirt last season to further justify the club record £63million the club paid to bring him to Tyneside from Real Sociedad during the summer of 2022, but as delighted as he is with his big-money signing, head coach Howe is confident there is even more to come. Murph 🔗 Alex Isak Different game. Same link up. 💪 pic.twitter.com/OMhZf7dtKZ — Newcastle United (@NUFC) December 27, 2024 Asked where the former AIK Solna frontman currently ranks in world football, he said: “My biggest thing with Alex is I am evaluating his game on a daily and weekly basis and I just want to try to push him for more. “Everyone else can say where he is in the pecking order of world football. His game is in a good place at the moment. “My job is to not sit back and appreciate that, my job is to try and find areas he can improve, push him towards that and never stop pushing him. He has all the ingredients in there. Football never stops evolving and changing and he has to evolve with it. “There is a lot more to come from him. Our job is to help him deliver that. “Of course the main responsibility is for Alex to keep his focus, ignore the plaudits and keep helping the team, not be selfish. It is about Newcastle and he plays his part.” It is no coincidence that Newcastle have prospered as Isak has rediscovered his best form, and they will head for Manchester United – where they have won only once in the top flight since 1972 – on Monday evening looking for a fifth successive win in all competitions. He has scored in each of the last five league games having grown into the mantle of the Magpies’ main man, a role performed with such distinction in the past by the likes of Jackie Milburn, Malcolm Macdonald and Alan Shearer, and he has done so with the minimum of fuss. Asked about his character, Howe said: “He is calm, cool – he is what you see on the pitch. “He doesn’t get overly emotional, which for a striker is a great quality because that coolness you see and calmness in front of goal is part of his personality, part of what he is. He seems to have an extra half a second when other players don’t. “With Alex, the beauty of his attitude is that he wants to improve. We give him information and he is responsive. He is not a closed shop. “He is in no way thinking he has arrived at a certain place. He knows he has to keep adding to his game. The challenge is great for him to keep scoring freely as he is now.”

New York can be a magical place for museumgoers. It also can be overwhelming and overcrowded at times, especially at the biggest, most famous museums. Luckily, the city has scores of great museums to choose from: Everything from small and quirky, to elegant gems housed in historic mansions, to preserved Lower East Side tenement apartments and hands-on experiences that might surprise even longtime New Yorkers. “Going to the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History is fantastic. But they can be like a big super-sized coffee drink, while we’re more like a cup of espresso,” says Alex Kalman, director of two of the city’s tiniest museums, Mmuseumm1 and Mmuseumm2. One is built into an old elevator shaft in a downtown alleyway. At other small museums you’ll find a cozy, Viennese-style coffee shop; kosher Jewish comfort food; and edgy gift shops. You could view the chair that George Washington sat in before giving his inaugural address to Congress. Or you might make seltzer or solve math puzzles. Here’s some of what’s happening at NYC’s “other” museums: 1048 5th Ave. This museum, housed in a 1914 Gilded Age mansion that was once home to society doyenne Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III, focuses on art and design from Austria and Germany. Its Cafe Sabarsky is a destination of its own, with 1912 upholstery, period decor, and a grand piano in the corner used for cabaret, chamber and classical music performances. On view now is “Egon Schiele: Living Landscapes” and “Austrian Masterworks from the Neue Galerie.” 227 W 27th St. Tucked inside the Fashion Institute of Technology, behind the big sculpture in front, is the city’s only museum solely devoted to fashion. And it’s free. Opening in February is “Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities,” exploring connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. 1109 5th Ave. at 92nd St. On view now are “Illit Azouley: Mere Things,” the first solo exhibit in a U.S. museum dedicated to the Berlin-based artist, and “Engaging with History: Works from the Collection.” Other displays include the “Tel Dan Stele,” a 9th century BCE stone monument fragment containing the earliest mention of the royal House of David outside of the Bible. The gift shop features an impressive array of specialty gifts, including works by artist Oded Halahmy. There’s a cafe with updated takes on traditional bagels, blintzes, herring and house-cured salmon. 2 East 91st St. One of the city’s two Smithsonian museums, the Cooper Hewitt focuses on innovative design. Its gift shop rivals MoMA’s, and there’s a private garden and small restaurant. The museum is housed in the former home of industrial magnate Andrew Carnegie. Completed in 1902, the mansion was the first in the U.S. to have a structural steel frame, and one of the first in the city to have a passenger elevator and central heating. It is now LEED-certified and features other cutting-edge technologies. A major exhibit on now, “Making Home: Smithsonian Design Triennial,” explores design’s role in shaping concepts of home, physically and emotionally. It sprawls over the entire mansion and will be on view through Aug. 10. 1 Bowling Green The other Smithsonian in town, it’s at the lower end of Manhattan inside the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House, now a city landmark. Admission is free, and current exhibitions include “Jeffrey Veregge: Of Gods and Heroes,” “Native New York” and “Infinity of Nations.” The gift shop features authentic Native American art, crafts, apparel and jewelry from a wide representation of groups, in addition to books by and about Native Americans. 103 Orchard St. With something for all ages, the Tenement Museum is housed in two preserved tenement buildings, one from 1863 and the other from 1888. Each apartment is a kind of time capsule, telling the story of a different immigrant or migrant family who lived there. The museum also offers walking tours of the neighborhood. “What is most unique about the Tenement Museum is that it shines the spotlight on ‘ordinary people’ — working-class families who never imagined they’d one day be the subject of a museum,” says Tenement Museum President Annie Polland. 170 Central Park West A great way to learn more about the city’s history, including the fact that Washington was inaugurated here. A permanent gallery on the fourth floor features a detailed recreation of the White House Oval Office in Washington, D.C., where presidents have worked since 1909. The Meet the Presidents Gallery traces, through artwork and objects, the evolution of the presidency and executive branch. Also on view is the chair from Washington’s inauguration at Federal Hall, on Wall Street, the only presidential inauguration held in New York City. Other current exhibits include “Pets and the City,” “Fred W. McDarrah: Pride and Protest.” There’s a permanent “Gallery of Tiffany Lamps.” 225 Fifth Ave. A hands-on museum with all kinds of math-oriented puzzles and thought-inspiring curiosities, like a tricycle with square wheels that rides smoothly on a zigzagged surface. In an exhibit called “Human Tree,” visitors can make successively smaller images of themselves that combine to make a “fractal tree” that sways in response to their movements. 474 Hemlock St, Brooklyn An interactive museum and factory tour run in partnership with the city’s oldest seltzer works, a family business now in its fourth generation. The museum, inside Brooklyn Seltzer Boys’ active factory, is “dedicated to preserving and promoting the effervescent history of seltzer water,” and celebrates “the manufacturing of seltzer, the science of seltzer, and seltzer as a cultural force in New York City and the world beyond.” Not to mention, guests can spritz each other with seltzer. In a disturbing incident, a Hindutva group allegedly tied two middle-aged women to a tree and harassed them for celebrating Christmas in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Wednesday, December 25. Deva Sena group, accompanied by local villagers, committed a shocking act of public harassment. The women, whose identities have been withheld for safety reasons, were reportedly celebrating Christmas in their locality when the mob confronted them. According to reports, the group accused the women of luring villagers into Christianity under the guise of festivities. Despite having no proof of the allegations, the mob dragged the women and tied them to a tree in public view, subjecting them to verbal abuse and humiliation. A video of the assault that captured the entire traumatic incident surfaced on social media platforms on Saturday, December 28 showing the women bound to a tree, surrounded by an aggressive crowd. The clip further shows the group leader making inflammatory comments and accusing them of engaging in religious conversion activities, labelling them as “dangerous for society” for their perceived association with Christianity. “We cannot let what happened in Bangladesh here also,” the man said. Onlookers present there were watching as spectators and recording the scene on their phones. On December 25th, in #Jajpur , #Odisha , a #Hindutva group called #DevaSena , along with other villagers, tied two women to a tree and harassed them for celebrating #Christmas , accusing them of promoting religious conversion. pic.twitter.com/XVptKPZGJH Local reports suggest that Deva Sena has a history of radical actions and has been increasingly active in the region, targeting minority communities and those they consider to have gone astray from their Hindu roots. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage with the people demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Activists have also flagged concern about the growing environment of fear among religious minorities in certain parts of the country. However, this is not an isolated incident, several anti-Christian reports of attacks have emerged during this year’s Christmas celebrations across India. Reports suggested that these attacks orchestrated by right-wing Hindutva outfits and their affiliates have carried out a systemic campaign of harassment and intimidation targeting Christian communities to express their strong opposition to the Christmas festival. The right-wing campaigning activities include disruptions of Christian gatherings, public vigilantism, conducting raids in schools to stop Christmas functions, and harassing people for wearing Santa Claus dresses. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself attended Christmas hosted by a senior Orthodox Church Bishop at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in Kerala indicating political strategies which are quite far from the Christian plight in India today.PBBM’s call for help for Catanduanes

How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze. Stock market today: Wall Street drifts to a mixed close in thin trading following a holiday pause Stock indexes drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street as some heavyweight technology and communications sector stocks offset gains elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 slipped less than 0.1% Thursday, its first loss after three straight gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Gains by retailers and health care stocks helped temper the losses. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. The Labor Department reported that U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week, though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years. Treasury yields fell in the bond market. Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen has targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said Thursday's bombardment took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military later said it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief was at the location in Yemen. At least three people were reported killed and dozens injured in the Sanaa airport strike.
