Beirut: Insurgents’ stunning march across Syria gained speed on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital Damascus and with the government forced to deny rumours that President Bashar al-Assad had fled the country. The lightning rebel advance suggests that Assad’s government could fall within the next week, US and other Western officials said. A giant portrait of Syrian president Bashar Assad sets on a building, as empty streets seen in Damascus, Syria, on Saturday. Credit: AP Since the rebels’ sweep into Aleppo a week ago, government defences have crumbled at a dizzying speed as insurgents seized a string of major cities and rose up in places where the rebellion had long seemed over. The twin threats to the strategically vital city of Homs and the capital, Damascus, now pose an existential danger to the Assad dynasty’s five-decade reign over Syria and the continued influence there of its main regional backer, Iran. The rebels’ moves around Damascus, reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of the southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. If the insurgents capture Homs, they would cut the link between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where the president enjoys wide support. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaeda and is considered a terrorist organisation by the US and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad’s government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country’s long-running civil war, the government now has control of only four of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Homs, Latakia and Tartus. Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad’s chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people”. In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria’s border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told the Associated Press, and those still open had run out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle [in Damascus] or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018 when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a years-long siege. The UN said it was moving non-critical staff outside the country as a precaution. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad: Backed by Russia and Iran – both of which are bogged down in separate conflicts. Credit: Saudi Press Agency/AP Assad rumours Syria’s state media denied social media rumours that President Assad had left the country, saying he was performing his duties in Damascus. Assad has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia is busy with its war in Ukraine and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad’s forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that the US should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a UN resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with UN-supervised elections. No details were immediately available. The insurgents’ march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. An insurgent commander, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaeda, ditching hardline officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. Syrian rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani. Credit: Al Jazeera Syria’s military, meanwhile, sent large numbers of reinforcements to defend the key central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as insurgents approached its outskirts. The shock offensive began on November 27, during which rebel fighters captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama, the country’s fourth-largest city. Opposition activists said insurgents entered Palmyra on Friday, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites, that had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra, including the main Baath City, activists said. The Syrian Observatory said government troops had withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces and were sending reinforcements to Homs, where a battle loomed. If the insurgents capture Homs, they would cut the link between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where the president enjoys wide support. The Syrian Army said in a statement that it had carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists”. The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area”, apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar’s top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticised Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there was a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday insisted at a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump that any settlement with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine had to be "just", as fears grow in Kyiv on the position of the incoming administration. President Emmanuel Macron hosted three-way talks with Zelensky and Trump at the Elysee Palace, discussing what the incoming American president had termed a world that was a "little crazy". Hours after their meeting, the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden announced a new $988 million military assistance package for Ukraine. The package features drones, ammunition for precision HIMARS rocket launchers, and equipment and spare parts for artillery systems, tanks and armoured vehicles, the Pentagon said in a statement. Zelensky's meeting with Trump just before the three men headed to Notre Dame for the re-opening ceremony of the great Paris cathedral was his first face-to-face encounter with tycoon-turned-politician since his election victory. The meeting was of huge importance to Zelensky, given fears in Kyiv that Trump, who once boasted he could end Russia's war on Ukraine in 24 hours, may urge Ukraine to make concessions to Moscow. It also offered a unique chance for Macron to gain insights into how a second Trump presidency will look when he takes office in January. The trip to Paris is Trump's first international visit since his November 5 election win. "We all want peace. But it is very important for us... that the peace is just for all of us and that Russia, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin or any other aggressor has no possibility of ever returning," Zelensky said according to the presidential website. "And this is the most important thing -- a just peace and security guarantees, strong security guarantees for Ukraine," he added. Trump has scoffed at the billions of dollars in US military assistance to Ukraine and has spoken of forcing a quick settlement. But Zelensky also thanked Trump for his "unwavering resolve" describing the talks as "good and productive". Trump and Macron embraced and shook hands several times on the steps of the French presidential palace, with Trump given a full guard of honour despite not yet being in office. "It seems like the world is going a little crazy right now and we will be talking about that," Trump told reporters as he prepared to sit down for the talks with Macron. Despite tensions between the two men during his first term, Trump hailed his ties with the centrist French leader, saying: "We had a great relationship as everyone knows. We accomplished a lot." Macron told Trump it was "a great honour for French people to welcome you" for the re-opening ceremony at Notre Dame, which was devastated by a blaze in 2019 during Trump's first term. "You were president at that time and I remember the solidarity and the immediate reaction," Macron added, speaking in English. When he first took office in 2017, Trump's ties with Macron -- then also a fresh face on the world stage -- began warmly despite their obvious political differences. Their long and muscular handshakes -- which saw each man seek to assert his superiority -- became a light-hearted focus of attention before ties cooled, then soured, following disputes about climate change, trade and defence. Trump earlier wrote on his Truth Social platform that the United States should "not get involved" in the situation in Syria, where fast-moving rebel forces say they have begun to encircle the capital Damascus. The Republican's return to power has rung alarms in Paris and many European capitals after his promises on the campaign trail to force an end to fighting in Ukraine and levy tariffs on trading partners. In his own reaction to the discussions, Macron wrote on social media: "Let us continue our joint efforts for peace and security." European allies have largely enjoyed a close working relationship with Biden on the crisis in the Middle East, but Trump is likely to distance himself and ally the United States even more closely with Israel. In a sign of the importance of Trump's one-day trip to Paris, he was accompanied by his pick for White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, as well as his Near East and Middle East advisors, Steve Witkoff and Massad Boulos, according to a guest list issued by the Elysee Palace. Tesla tycoon and Trump advisor Elon Musk, who was also on the line during a phone call between the incoming president and Zelensky last month, also flew into the French capital was present at the Notre Dame ceremony. sjw/adp/jjPatricia Technologies, a Nigerian crypto platform, has commenced the repayment of customers after suffering a cyberattack The company said the repayment process demonstrates its commitment to restoring customers’ confidence in its platform The current repayment process began on December 10, 2024, with the company asking customers to update their details on the platform CHECK OUT: Education is Your Right! The 'Gypsy King' suffered another upset at the hands of his 37-year-old adversary in Saudi Arabia, further tarnishing what was once an impeccable record. Despite a close battle, Usyk retained his WBA, WBO, and WBC titles after a unanimous points decision, which left Fury visibly exasperated. Every judge's scorecard read 116-112 for Usyk, but the controversy didn't end there. Adding insult to injury, an AI-powered fourth judge also deemed Fury the loser . Although this innovative judge played no official role in the fight's outcome, Turki Alalshikh championed what he heralded as a pioneering trial to ensure impartial judgment in boxing . The experimental AI gave Usyk an even wider victory margin at 118-112. Upon hearing about the AI's evaluation, Fury's response was clear and cutting: "F*** all computers," he declared, advocating "More jobs for humans". Fury's criticism did not stop with the digital domain; he was nearly as sceptical of the human judges. He believed he had triumphed when the final bell rang. In a conversation with Sky Sports , Fury expressed his disbelief: "I swear to God, I thought I won by three rounds!" He further vented to ESPN , claiming, "I thought I won the fight again; I was Larry Holmesed again. I was on the front foot the entire time. When you don't get the knockout, this is what can happen." In the build-up to the anticipated match-up between Fury and Usyk, Alalshikh backed an unconventional approach. "For the first time ever, an AI-powered judge will monitor the fight," he declared. "Free from bias and human error." His pursuit of transparency extended to a video message: "For years, boxing has been defined by its glory, but sometimes that glory is clouded by doubt and controversy. Isn't it time for fairness to step into the ring?" The promoter elaborated, adding: "This isn't just AI, it's revolutionizing boxing. It's fairness powered by technology and human expertise." However, Fury was left contemplating the decision when he abruptly exited the ring on Saturday evening, voicing his dismay later to the press: "The judges gave him a Christmas gift. I feel like I won both fights. "I know I had to knock him out, but it's boxing, and this happens. There is no doubt in my mind I won this fight. "Frank [Warren] had me three or four rounds up, and a lot of people had me up by at least two." Yet he refused to dwell negatively on the outcome, conceding: "I'm not going to cry over spilt milk; it's over now. I've been in boxing my whole life, but I'll always feel a little bit hard done by - not a little bit, a lot."
Syrian government forces withdraw from central city of Homs as insurgent offensive acceleratesThe central government's capital expenditure is expected to surge by an impressive 25 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the second half of the financial year 2025, according to a report by Jefferies The report also noted that the overall expenditure of the government is also expected to surge by 15 per cent. It highlights that despite an increase in populist schemes in the run-up to elections, the central government remains committed to investing in infrastructure development over welfare-driven measures. The report underlined that while populist policies have gained traction, especially in state elections, the central government's spending priorities show a balanced approach. It said "Jefferies' India office expects total central government expenditure to rise by around 15% YoY in 2HFY25 ending 31 March 2025 with capex rising by over 25 per cent YoY.. Still the rise of such populist policies should be seen in the context of a central government which is still spending more on capex than welfare". The report noted that the growing success of handout schemes in state elections, such as Maharashtra's welfare programme costing Rs 460 billion annually (1.1 per cent of the state's GDP), does raise concerns about a potential wave of populism. However, the central government's focus remains on creating long-term economic assets through infrastructure development, which is vital for sustained growth. In the financial markets, the report suggested a reasonable chance that the Indian stock market is stabilizing after a recent correction, particularly in the mid-cap segment. It said "Meanwhile, there is a reasonable possibility that the Indian stock market is bottoming out after a correction which has been primarily in the more expensive mid-cap stocks" While foreign investors sold more than USD 12.5 billion worth of Indian equities in the last two months, a significant amount by historical standards--domestic investors have absorbed the outflows. Notably, October saw record inflows into equity mutual funds, even as the stock market was undergoing a correction. The report emphasized that the strong domestic inflows are a reassuring factor for India's markets. The combined effects of government capex spending and robust local investment suggest a stable outlook, even amid concerns over rising populist measures at the state level. ( MENAFN - The Conversation) This article commemorates World AIDS Day on December 1. The UNAIDS report shows that Indonesia recorded 540,000 HIV cases as of 2023. That year saw a record high of 57,299 new HIV cases, with 5.5% (3,151) of these cases affecting adolescents aged 15-19. Adolescents with HIV are at an increased risk of developing mental health disorders , such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These issues often stem from the emotional turmoil they experience, including feelings of disappointment, sadness, and anger as they struggle with accepting their HIV-positive status. HIV can profoundly influence the way adolescents think, behave, and interact with others-whether with family, friends at school, or the wider community. They might draw back from others , become reluctant to talk to anyone, become more selective about who they hang out with, and in some cases, think about ending their life . The World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that HIV isn't the only contributor to the deterioration of mental health of adolescents living with the virus. Other factors , such as family issues and social environment which can lead to stigma and personal anxiety, can actually worsen the problems. 1. Stigma and discrimination In Indonesia, approximately 50% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) face discrimination in community settings, schools, and healthcare. Around 68% also experience discrimination from their families and close friends. While stigma and discrimination around PLHIV are common, our research in Indonesia suggests that these experiences can worsen the mental health challenges faced by adolescents living with the infection. 2. Family conditions Family situations play a significant role in the mental health of adolescents living with HIV in Indonesia. Growing up in a broken home or a family with underlying conflict, for instance, makes it harder for them to effectively manage their lives. Also, a lack of support from parents or family members-who may be physically or emotionally absent-can leave them feeling isolated and lonely. 3. Personal anxiety Adolescents living with HIV also frequently grapple with concerns about how their status might impact their lives. They often anticipate negative reactions towards their HIV status such as rejections in relationships, limited educational opportunities and reduced job prospects. These worries can have an even more negative impact on their mental health. Reducing the risk of mental health problems in adolescents with HIV requires coordinated efforts from families, communities, NGOs, and the government. 1. HIV education for families Family members, especially parents , play a key role in meeting the emotional needs of adolescents with HIV. This highlights the importance of HIV education for parents from the government and NGOs. An effective strategy to provide HIV education for parents is by encouraging them to participate in HIV programs at schools and local community activities. HIV education should also be part of school curriculum and community activities so it reaches wider communities, including other family members. This can contribute to preventing the risk of family rejection and creating a supportive environment for adolescents living with HIV. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a kid, parents need support from other parents, the government, and NGOs to raise their children who live with HIV. 2. Neighbourhood initiatives Neighbourhood efforts are crucial in reducing stigma against adolescents with HIV. The neighbourhood can work together to change negative attitudes toward people living with HIV. This can be achieved through the encouragement of open discussions about HIV and promoting health awareness to prevent its transmission. Neighbourhood efforts include initiating HIV campaigns and sharing information about discriminatory and stigmatising attitudes and behaviours, as well as their impact on people living with HIV. 3. Expand counselling services NGOs need to expand counselling services and peer support groups for adolescents with HIV. One effective approach to do this is by partnering with schools to ensure that students living with HIV can participate in the learning process without encountering stigma or discrimination . 4. Strengthen policies The Indonesian government must strengthen policies to protect adolescents living with HIV from stigma and discrimination, particularly in schools and healthcare facilities. Funding for HIV programs should also be increased to raise public awareness about HIV. The challenges of stigma, discrimination and psychological burden of living with HIV can hinder adolescents emotional wellbeing. The government, NGOs, families, and communities need to work together to eliminate stigma and discrimination against PLHIV so they can thrive and have the same opportunities as those without HIV. WHY ROSEN LAW: We encourage investors to select qualified counsel with a track record of success in leadership roles. Often, firms issuing notices do not have comparable experience, resources, or any meaningful peer recognition. Many of these firms do not actually litigate securities class actions, but are merely middlemen that refer clients or partner with law firms that actually litigate cases. Be wise in selecting counsel. The Rosen Law Firm represents investors throughout the globe, concentrating its practice in securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Rosen Law Firm achieved the largest ever securities class action settlement against a Chinese Company at the time. Rosen Law Firm was Ranked No. 1 by ISS Securities Class Action Services for number of securities class action settlements in 2017. The firm has been ranked in the top 4 each year since 2013 and has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for investors. In 2019 alone the firm secured over $438 million for investors. In 2020, founding partner Laurence Rosen was named by law360 as a Titan of Plaintiffs’ Bar. Many of the firm’s attorneys have been recognized by Lawdragon and Super Lawyers. DETAILS OF THE CASE: According to the lawsuit, during the Class Period, defendants made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) the issuers being faced by suppliers, like ASML, in the semiconductor industry were much more severe than defendants had indicated to investors; (2) the pace of recovery of sales in the semiconductor industry was much slower than defendants had publicly acknowledged; (3) defendants had created the false impression that they possessed reliable information pertaining to customer demand and anticipated growth, while also downplaying risk from macroeconomic and industry fluctuations, as well as stronger regulations restricting the export of semiconductor technology, including the products that ASML sells; and (4) as a result, defendants’ statements about ASML’s business, operations, and prospects lacked a reasonable basis. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages. No Class Has Been Certified. Until a class is certified, you are not represented by counsel unless you retain one. You may select counsel of your choice. You may also remain an absent class member and do nothing at this point. An investor’s ability to share in any potential future recovery is not dependent upon serving as lead plaintiff. SINGAPORE – Nakarasan, 49, has been in and out of prison since his teenage years for offences such as robbery, vehicle theft and housebreaking. When he was handed a 10-year prison sentence in 2015, the extent of the time he would be behind bars hit him. “I wanted to change. I realised I was wasting my life,” Nakarasan, who did not want to give his full name, told The Straits Times. Determined to make that his last incarceration, he enrolled in a Nitec course in electronics and computer networking in prison school to give himself a goal to work towards. “I realised that education was my ticket to a new life. I wanted to break free, to live with purpose, and to truly embrace the life I was meant to lead,” he said. Nakarasan, who will be released in March 2025, is now in a halfway house for the last part of his sentence. He continued his studies in prison school in 2023, pursuing a diploma in business practice (administration and management) from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). He completed the course in May 2024, and now works at a pharmaceutical company. “This job has helped me rebuild my life, and I am deeply appreciative of the trust and support I have received along the way,” he said. He is one of 300 people who studied while in prison in 2023. Classes are held on prison grounds in classrooms that – if one looks past the barred windows – resemble those in typical mainstream schools, with whiteboards and tables. Prison guards sometimes patrol the corridor outside the classrooms. Lessons can be held both in person and virtually. Over the years, the courses offered in prison school have expanded beyond the national examinations, giving inmates more chances at better prospects when they return to society. The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) collaborated with NP in 2018 to begin offering a diploma in business practice course for inmates. In 2020, a degree programme from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) was added to the prison school. The prison school also started offering the Institute of Technical Education’s Nitec in services course in 2021. The number of inmates taking the diploma course offered by NP has gone up from 16 in 2022 to 38 in 2023. The inmates pursuing degrees also doubled in number, from three in 2022 to six in 2023. SUSS told ST that it has plans to introduce more part-time undergraduate programmes to prison school students. SPS said that about 70 per cent of its inmate population have secondary-level education or below. “Hence, availing education and skills training programmes is important to help raise inmates’ economic capital and increase their employability upon release,” it said. “Ex-offenders who remain employed are at a lower risk of reoffending than those who are not.” The Ministry of Education has offered work attachment opportunities for teachers who are keen to teach at prison school since the 1970s. For the past five years, around 12 teachers have been seconded to prison school yearly, with the average tenure ranging from two to five years, it added. Madam Hernie Salleh taught English in prison school from January 2021 to December 2022. She was initially worried and anxious about teaching in the new environment, which she feared might be daunting. “I was particularly concerned about potential discipline issues and how best to handle or approach them if they arose,” she said. Madam Hernie’s worries were eased on the first day when she saw how excited the class was at meeting a new teacher. The students were respectful in their interactions with her and asked questions politely, she said. “They frequently asked questions about how to improve their English and what they could do to continue learning after class, despite having limited resources in their cells.” Many also shared their aspirations for the future with her, with some telling her they hoped to continue in prison school as far as they could. “Their drive and self-reflection made me pause and think about how much they valued education as a means to better themselves,” she said. “Witnessing the determination of students striving to excel, even under such constrained circumstances, was incredibly inspiring and reinforced the value of education as a tool for transformation.” Join ST's WhatsApp Channel and get the latest news and must-reads. In the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency, Dogecoin has emerged as a unique player. Originally created as a joke, Dogecoin has captured the imagination of investors and the general public alike, leading to a market valuation that has seen significant fluctuations over time. As of the latest data, Dogecoin’s market value stands at approximately $56.56 billion, with a price per coin hovering around $0.44. The resurgence in Dogecoin’s value can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the cryptocurrency market is known for its volatility, with prices driven by investor sentiment, market trends, and the influence of prominent figures. Elon Musk , for example, has been a vocal supporter of Dogecoin, and his endorsements have historically led to spikes in its valuation. Secondly, Dogecoin’s appeal lies in its branding as the “fun and friendly internet currency.” Its association with the popular “doge” meme gives it a cultural edge that resonates with a community looking for alternatives to more traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. This library allows developers to build Dogecoin-compliant products with ease, potentially expanding its use cases beyond mere speculation. The concept of cryptocurrency as “internet-native money” is becoming increasingly accepted, with digital currencies like Dogecoin being integrated into various online platforms for transactions and tipping. This integration into the digital economy signifies a shift in how value is perceived and exchanged in an internet-centric world. Despite its origins and the whimsical nature of its mascot, Dogecoin’s market performance is a testament to the unpredictable and dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency market. Whether it will sustain its current valuation or experience another round of volatility remains to be seen. However, its journey from meme to a multi-billion-dollar asset highlights the intersection of culture, technology, and finance in the digital age. Recent trends suggest that Dogecoin’s market dominance is on the rise. Analysts have observed a pattern where Dogecoin’s value does not decline as steeply as other cryptocurrencies during market downturns, indicating a resilient demand for DOGE. Moreover, the potential integration of Dogecoin as a payment method on various platforms could further solidify its position in the market. The social aspect of Dogecoin cannot be overlooked. The volume and social dominance of Dogecoin have hit new peaks, reflecting its growing relevance and demand. This social momentum is often fueled by discussions and promotions across social media platforms, where DOGE frequently trends, capturing the attention of new and seasoned investors alike. For those interested in the cryptocurrency market, Dogecoin represents both the potential and the risks inherent in this new form of digital asset. As with any investment, due diligence and a clear understanding of market forces are essential before participating in the trading of Dogecoin or any other cryptocurrency. As the digital economy continues to grow, cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin will likely play an increasingly significant role. Their ability to capture both the serious and lighthearted aspects of the internet culture makes them a fascinating subject for both investors and observers of the financial technology space.
