Aviva made the 250-pence-per-share offer on Nov. 19 and the price represented a nearly 60% premium to the stock's close on Nov. 18. If the deal went through, Direct Line shareholders would have received 112.5 pence in cash and 0.282 new Aviva shares for every Direct Line share held. The life, motor and home insurer said Direct Line rejected the offer on Nov. 26 saying it undervalued the company, and refused to engage in further discussions. Direct Line did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The development was first reported by Bloomberg News on Wednesday. London-based Direct Line has been focused on turning around its cost-burdened business after rebuffing a takeover attempt from Belgian rival Ageas (AGES.BR) , opens new tab in March. This test showed that the Taxibot might provide a more environmentally friendly option than conventional taxiing techniques, which include keeping aircraft engines running by drastically lowering emissions during the taxiing phase. However, Tuesday's flight is historic since it is the first time KLM has deployed the Taxibot on a commercial passenger aircraft with onboard passengers. The Dutch carrier only introduced Premium Comfort in 2022. How does the Taxibot work? The Taxibot may appear to be a typical airport tug at first appearance. Still, it is essentially different since the airplane's pilot controls it during taxiing instead of a ground staff member. KLM explained that the Taxibot tows the plane to the runway when it is connected to it at the gate. The pilot disengages the Taxibot and turns on the airplane's engines for departure as soon as they arrive at the runway. The Taxibot has more benefits than just lowering emissions. Compared to traditional taxiing with engines operating, it helps preserve the nose landing gear's lifetime, which is less strained. The Taxibot also helps to reduce noise pollution, especially in the airport apron area where conventional engine-powered taxiing may cause a lot of noise disturbances. Furthermore, by allowing aircraft to travel at up to 23 knots—much faster than usual taxi speeds—without requiring the engines to run, the Taxibot technology improves operating efficiency. In addition to providing significant fuel and maintenance cost savings, this makes the taxiing procedure easier and more effective. The technology was delivered to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in March 2020, and Turkish leisure carrier Corendon Airlines conducted the first tests the following month. Before transferring the technology to its affiliate Transavia, KLM started testing it internally. A global trend towards sustainable taxiing KLM's use of the Taxibot is in line with an expanding trend in the aviation industry. KINGSTON, Ont. — Felipe Forteza went from delivering hits to making kicks for the Laval Rouge et Or this season. The linebacker-turned-kicker showed a veteran's poise with his boot on Saturday, kicking a Vanier Cup record six field goals to lift Laval to a 22-17 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at Richardson Stadium. "The defence did its job and the offence put me in the right position to do it," said Forteza, who was named game MVP. "So I'm stoked." Quarterback Arnaud Desjardins was 34 of 42 for 320 passing yards to help the Rouge et Or win their second Vanier Cup in three years and record 12th overall. It was the first loss of the year for the Golden Hawks, who last won a Canadian university football title in 2005. Laval set the early tone with some big defensive plays and Desjardins was in fine early form, completing his first 22 pass attempts. Forteza split the uprights five times in the first half as Laval took a 17-7 lead into the intermission. Forteza broke the record with his sixth field goal with 2:31 remaining. His only miss was a 32-yard attempt in the final minute. The Golden Hawks ran the ball out of the end zone but didn't threaten again. WASHINGTON (AP) — In the two weeks since Donald Trump won the presidency, he's tried to demonstrate his dominance by naming loyalists for top administration positions, even though many lack expertise and some face sexual misconduct accusations. It often seems like he's daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump's attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country's top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump's other picks might exceed his party's willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he's denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth's lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn't the only hurdle for Kennedy; he's spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations.
