Burt, the huge crocodile that rose to fame with a cameo in the movie “Crocodile Dundee” and continued to impress visitors with his fiery temper and commanding presence, has died. Burt died over the weekend, the Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia , said. He was at least 90 years old. “Known for his independent nature, Burt was a confirmed bachelor — an attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm,” Crocosaurus Cove wrote in social media posts. “He wasn’t just a crocodile, he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years,” the aquarium wrote. A saltwater crocodile , Burt was estimated to be more than 5 meters (16 feet) long. He was captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River and became one of the most well-known crocodiles in the world, according to Crocosaurus Cove. The 1986 movie stars Paul Hogan as the rugged crocodile hunter Mick Dundee. In the movie, American Sue Charlton, played by actress Linda Kozlowski, goes to fill her canteen in a watering hole when she is attacked by a crocodile before being saved by Dundee. Burt is briefly shown lunging out of the water. But the creature shown in more detail as Dundee saves the day is apparently something else. The Internet Movie Database says the movie goofed by depicting an American alligator, which has a blunter snout. The Australian aquarium where Burt had lived since 2008 features a “Cage of Death” which it says is the nation's only crocodile dive. It said it planned to honor Burt's legacy with a commemorative sign “celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park.”Horse and cattle owners see shortage of veterinarians willing to take the reins of large animal careTrump says he can't guarantee tariffs won't raise US prices and won't rule out revenge prosecutions

What’s the environmental impact of AI? If you have been paying attention to the news the last few years, chances are you have probably heard about artificial intelligence (AI). While AI gets a lot of media coverage, the environmental impact of AI isn’t always mentioned. With such a big technology shift on the horizon, let’s dive into what the popularity in AI might mean for the environment. What is artificial intelligence? The term AI gets thrown around a lot, but many people don’t actually know what it means. Artificial intelligence is a type of technology that allows computers to perform advanced tasks , such as ones normally done by human reasoning . AI can be used for all sorts of projects, from helping you write your grocery list to supporting NASA in diagnosing problems with their satellites. That’s pretty cool! AI’s environmental cost Something we all might take for granted is that everything we access in the digital realm exists somewhere physically as well. For example, consider the cloud. It might seem like a virtual storage space, but your data actually exists somewhere. These places are called data centers. Like most technology, AI relies on data centers to function. And it turns out, data centers are extremely resource intensive. Electronics To operate data centers, you need powerful computers and microchips, all of which require precious metals such as platinum, gold, and silver. But mining these materials does not come without a cost. And as AI gets more popular and the demand for these resources goes up, the mining industry is expected to grow substantially , increasing AI’s environmental impact. Energy Perhaps the biggest criticism of AI is the intense energy usage required to train and run its programs. In most cases, this energy still comes from fossil fuels, which generate a large carbon footprint. By 2026, the International Energy Agency predicts that AI will account for 4% of the world’s total energy usage — comparable to the annual energy consumption of Japan. What’s the carbon pollution impact of all that energy? A study done by the University of Massachusetts discovered that it takes “626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of around 300 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco” to train a singular AI program. That is a lot of carbon emissions. Water Since AI is such an energy-intensive technology, the data centers require advanced cooling practices to ensure their computers do not overheat. This is most often done by using water to cool the electronic systems. Some of the largest data centers, like ones used by Google, can use upwards of 550,000 gallons of water a day . This becomes problematic when data centers are built in areas like the Western US, where water is already a scarce resource. Is it all doom and gloom? So, is AI the final straw for the climate? Not necessarily. Some experts are very hopeful that AI could help us solve our climate problems. Just like how NASA can use AI to help with their space missions, AI can help climate scientists better understand climate change. It can help them collect important data, model potential natural disasters and synthesize solutions to that to help stop the climate crisis. It is another tool in the toolbox for activists and scientists to use to help address climate change. A great example of this is using AI to manage the energy efficiency of the electrical grid. With more renewable energy capacity added to grids nationwide, and increasing demand for electricity as more cars and homes go electric, traditional grid management techniques are falling short. Researchers at the University of Virigina have shown that with the use of AI, the electrical grid can better handle variations in demand and optimize energy usage. This AI solution will help ensure the reliability of renewable energy going forward. AI holds immense potential — both as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change and as a technology with significant environmental costs. The path AI takes will depend on how companies and policymakers choose to move forward. By prioritizing renewable energy and innovations that minimize resource use, we can steer AI toward becoming a solution rather than a setback in our climate journey.

Cy-Fair firefighters responding to explosion in northwest Harris County
The volatile tribal district of Kurram witnessed another scene of carnage, death and destruction on 21 November 2024. On this fateful day, a convoy of about 200 vehicles was travelling from Parachinar to Peshawar when at about 1:20 PM, gunmen jumped out of their vehicles and poured deadly gunfire on the travelling vehicles on the road, to extinguish the lives of 40 innocent residents of Parachinar including women and children. The attacked convoy consisted of mostly Shia Muslim members of the community. According to local sources, this attack was in retaliation for a 12 October attack that had left 15 people dead, including two women and a child. No group has so far claimed responsibility, but it is very likely that the banned TTP is behind this atrocity, because it has been quite active in this region in the recent past. State security agencies are either responsible for criminal negligence or have made no efforts to curb the acts of violence in this sensitive area. Since July this year, over 80 people have been killed while travelling by road and the people of the region have protested, demanding peace and security. But the state agencies have so far failed miserably to provide relief to the people of the area. The government now must make it priority number one to secure this region, or else this scourge will most likely spill over and then sectarian outfits could exploit the situation to create tensions across the country Quite oblivious of the plight of these communities, today the federal government and the provincial authorities of KP province are embroiled in a bitter dispute because of the 24th November protest day announced by the PTI. Due to their infighting, both the federal and provincial authorities are least bothered about the security conditions in Kurram or other parts of KP. Government sources tend to express their indignation and condemnation of the acts of terrorism, and promises are made to deal with the terrorists with an iron hand and bring them to justice. But in practice, the poor residents of the areas are left to their own devices when bloodthirsty militants rule the roost. Kurram district is extremely sensitive because of the sectarian divide and its proximity to Afghanistan along with the presence of obscurantist militants of the TTP. So far the government has not been able to control militancy or to settle tribal disputes that explode into tribal vendettas. The government now must make it priority number one to secure this region, or else this scourge will most likely spill over to other areas of the province and then sectarian outfits could exploit the situation to create tensions across the length and breadth of the country. Elements responsible for the latest atrocity must be tracked down and punished and our state agencies must come up with practical plans for the security and safety of the people of Kurram or this violence could engulf the entire country. PBC Condemns Horrific Attack In Lower Kurram, Calls For Immediate Action The resurgence of violence has escalated since the TTP ended a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022 and vowed to intensify its attacks. The group's activity has added another layer of insecurity in a region already plagued by sectarian and tribal conflicts. The latest atrocity in Kurram is a stark reminder that the country is now at war with itself. Our brave soldiers are losing lives every day, and the enemy is not across the border but within the national boundaries. The hurried departure of the US forces from Afghanistan resulted in the Taliban control of Afghanistan and the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was the only world leader who openly welcomed the Taliban regime in Kabul and rejoiced at their victory declaring “The Taliban have broken the shackles of slavery.” Subsequently the then PTI-led federal government decided to release about 5,000 terrorists and militants of the TTP who had been languishing n Pakistani jails, and allowed them to settle down in the areas of their choice. An outdated and wrong concept of ‘strategic depth’ seems to be guiding our policy planners even today. The attitude and behaviour of the Talban regime in Kabul should be a lesson to scrap the old policies of seeking such ‘strategic depth’ and start with a clean slate regarding our policy towards the Afghan Taliban. The province of KP in the direct line of fire, and facing the brunt of the attacks by the militant forces of obscurantism and sectarianism. Far from the miscalculations of policy-makers, our soldiers on the ground are facing this danger with great courage and determination and almost everyday lives are being lost. So, far the total loss of lives at the hands of the militant forces of the Taliban has been more than the total loss of lives suffered in all the wars with the country’s traditional arch-nemesis India. It is now time to take the war to the enemy, hit them in their safe sanctuaries and nip the evil in the bud – before further damage is done to our state institutions and social fabric. According to the army chief, the army is now paying a price in blood because of the incompetence of political forces. This unfortunate state of affairs since 2021 has not been settled. Beginner’s Guide To Writing About Old Buildings In fact, the blame rests not just on the security establishment and federal governments. The provincial government of KP leaves much to be desired. The Chief Minister of the volatile province is neck deep in promoting the party agenda while criminally neglecting his role as an administrator of the province that is under threat by a bloody insurgency. When he devotes all his time to planning agitations against the federal authorities instead of fighting and curbing militancy and terrorism in his own province, the Chief Minister also becomes guilty of gross neglect.Squirrel Ai's Dr. Joleen Liang Speaks At The Cambridge Generative AI In Education Conference 2024MONTREAL — Second Cup Canada is cutting ties with a franchisee operating at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital who was allegedly filmed making hateful and antisemitic comments during a protest in the city last week. Second Cup Canada announced Saturday it was cutting ties with a franchisee for “making hateful remarks and gestures,” and adding in a statement the actions breach the franchise agreement as well as inclusion and community values held by the chain. Peter Mammas, CEO of Montreal-based Foodtastic, which owns Second Cup Canada, said in an interview on Sunday that he was at the movies when his phone started pinging non-stop. He saw the videos and the company’s operations staff spoke to employees that knew the woman, and they confirmed it was indeed the franchisee. Video shot during a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside of Concordia University’s downtown Montreal campus Thursday shows a woman walking around, masked, saying the “final solution is coming your way” — wording used to describe a Nazi plan to eliminate Jews in Europe during the Second World War. Another video also shows what appears to be the same woman, unmasked, making a Nazi salute while walking away. “We’re all for free speech and respectful conversations, but this wasn’t that,” Mammas said. “This was hate speech, and it was something that we thought could incite violence and we’re completely against that, so we sat down with our team and decided to revoke the franchise agreement.” Attempts to reach the franchisee were unsuccessful on Sunday. “Second Cup has zero tolerance for hate speech,” the coffee chain said in a statement on X. “In co-ordination with the hospital, we’ve shut down the franchisee’s café and are terminating their franchise agreement.” Mammas said lawyers for the franchisee and Second Cup were expected to meet on Monday. The regional health agency serving West-Central Montreal, which includes the Jewish General Hospital, said it was made aware of the video “containing antisemitic and hateful messaging.” The video is related to a franchisee of Second Cup, one of the private tenants operating within the (Jewish General), Carl Thériault, a spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday. “We fully support Second Cup’s decision to take swift and decisive action in this matter by shutting down the franchisee’s cafés and terminating their lease agreement.” The hospital has two locations operated by the same franchisee and both were shuttered on Saturday by the owners of the chain. The health agency “is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and stands firmly against antisemitism and any other form of discrimination or hate speech,” Thériault said. “We have franchisees who are Muslim, we have franchisees who are Jewish, we have franchisees that are Greek, French, we have employees from all different nations,” Mammas said. “So we definitely have no issue with that and we don’t take any political side, but ... hate speech ... you know we can’t accept that.”
