The family of Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, 78, said he is in the “early stages” of Alzheimer’s and battling another blood-born disease that is “causing problems with his entire body.” Robertson’s son Jase broke the news Friday on an episode of the Unashamed with the Robertson Family podcast. “Phil’s not doing well. We were trying to figure out the diagnosis, but according to the doctors, they are sure that he has some sort of blood disease causing all kinds of problems,” said Jase, 55. White nationalist and antisemitic podcaster Nick Fuentes was charged with battery last week after he allegedly assaulted a woman outside his Chicago-area home earlier in November. According to a Berwyn Police Department report obtained by The Smoking Gun , the woman, 57-year-old Marla Rose, said Fuentes “opened the door and immediately sprayed her face with pepper spray and pushed her with both hands on her upper body, causing her to fall backwards down the stairs and onto the concrete below.” Fuentes then grabbed her phone and went inside before coming back out with it moments later, according to the report. A manslaughter charge against Daniel Penny was dismissed Friday after a Manhattan jury couldn’t agree whether the former Marine was guilty in the death of Jordan Neely. The judge in the case, Maxwell Wiley, allowed prosecutors to have the charge dropped, while Penny’s attorneys had wanted Wiley to declare a mistrial. Penny still faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide for putting Neely in a six-minute chokehold on the New York City subway in May 2023, in an incident largely caught on cameras. Penny’s attorneys argued their client was justified in using the chokehold because witnesses had claimed Neely’s behavior was threatening, and that he had told passengers, “Somebody’s going to die today.” Prosecutors, meanwhile, noted that no witnesses had testified that Neely brandished a weapon or touched anybody, and that Penny kept Neely in the chokehold long after other passengers left the train. The manslaughter charge had carried a 15-year maximum prison sentence; for the lesser charge, Penny could face up to four years if convicted. VICTORIA — British Columbia Premier David Eby says 25-per-cent U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods would be “devastating” for the province’s lumber and forestry industries. He made the comment ahead of a meeting with fellow first ministers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Eby was scheduled to participate in the virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose the tariffs unless Canada and Mexico stop illegal border crossings and prevent illicit drugs from entering the United States. Eby said the lumber and forestry sectors are already strained by a recent increase in duties amid the ongoing U.S.-Canada dispute over softwood lumber. He said after the first meeting of his new cabinet in Victoria that the tariffs are “unjustified,” and they would hurt Americans as much as they would Canadians. The premier said B.C. is a source of natural gas, wood products, minerals and other products that U.S. businesses depend on, and the tariff would hinder jobs and opportunities in the province while making “life more expensive for Americans.” Eby and Ottawa have called for a united front dealing with Trump’s tariff plan, which he announced on social media on Monday. Eby said B.C. officials had repeatedly raised concerns with Ottawa over organized crime and illicit drugs, such as fentanyl, in relation to border security. “It’s a priority for us. It has been for a while, we’ve written to Ottawa about it. Doesn’t justify the tariffs, but it does mean that we can talk about those issues as well.” Eby said Trump’s proposed tariff “doesn’t make economic sense,” and the measure is not necessary to address issues at the border. The premier said he believes B.C. has a strong case to make for the tariff being “badly placed” if Trump’s priority is to reduce costs for Americans. “I think the premiers are unified,” Eby said. “There are 13 of us plus the prime minister. Since two of their number — the so-called ringleaders of the heroin smuggling gang, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran – were executed in 2015 and Renae Lawrence was released in 2018 — the others had dropped off the radar. That the five who have survived 19 years of their life sentences in Indonesian jails are now back on the diplomatic agenda is a mixed blessing for them. They will be full of fresh hope of moving to be closer to their families, and getting a potential release date. For all this to be part of a political debate before the deal is done, puts them in slightly risky territory. To know why, we need to recall the history of a different drug smuggler: Schapelle Corby. After years of diplomatic back-channelling, Corby – known in Indonesia as “the ganga queen” – was finally released early in 2014, after nine years. Schapelle Corby’s release in 2014 will play a part in the political discussion in Indonesia over the release of the remaining Bali Nine members. The then Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had taken the political risk of looking soft on drugs and too pro-West by allowing her parole on compassionate grounds, for mental health reasons. One stipulation was that she serve out her sentence at the family compound in Bali. Instead, she was whisked from the prison in a limousine procured by an Australian TV network (Seven), masked to preserve its exclusive story, and taken to a luxury compound to prepare for a planned highly paid interview. Then she was photographed in her prison clothes sipping a beer. Loading The Indonesian public was furious. The way they saw it, their president had kowtowed to the West and now the TV network and the Corbys were making fools of them. At one point it seemed possible that she might be returned to prison. Then, as now, the S-word — sovereignty — was invoked. An editorial in the newspaper Media Indonesia said Corby had ridiculed Indonesian law and sovereignty. Attempts to bring the remaining five members of the Bali Nine home by December, carry some similar risks. Already firebrand international law professor Hikmahanto Juwana has said of the potential deal: “Our sovereignty is being ripped [to shreds].” As a former colony (invaded and run by the Dutch, then the Japanese in World War II), Indonesians are wary of anything that smacks of foreign interference, particularly by Western colonial powers. They also have a great political intolerance for drugs. Remaining Bali Nine members Matthew Norman, Michael Czugaj, Scott Rush, Martin Stephens and Si Yi Chen – another member, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, died from cancer in 2018 – were never as infamous in Indonesia as Chan and Sukumaran, but their story was still known. You can only imagine the trepidation they are feeling now as their transfer is discussed but unconfirmed. That said, much has changed since 2013. Indonesia is two presidents down the track. Yudhoyono was replaced in 2014 by Joko Widodo, who moved early to cement his populist-nationalist credentials with the show executions of Chan and Sukumaran. Now Prabowo Subianto is in charge. He was educated in the West and became famous as a military general. He appears more comfortable in his own strongman skin, and Indonesia seems once again willing to talk. How Australia now acts and speaks, though, remains important. When then-prime minister Tony Abbott reacted angrily to the proposed execution of Chan and Sukumaran in 2015, and reminded Indonesia of the billion-dollar contribution made by Australia in 2004 for post-tsunami aid, ordinary Indonesians made him the butt of a joke. Chan and Sukumaran were shot by firing squad, the date of the execution announced on Anzac Day. After the current talks became public, shadow attorney-general Michaelia Cash muscled up, saying : “Drug offences are some of the worst offences our society sees because of the devastating consequences on people, including death.” This is no doubt true. But Cash should remember her words can be heard in Indonesia. I am biased. I knew some of the Bali Nine and I believe that 19 years is long enough. I also believe, as Sukumaran put it to me in 2012, that they had “f---ed up” and they knew it. “We were wrong, we know that. We’re paying for that.” And he had a message that, in my view, should still resonate today: “We’ve changed ... And the BBB said it’s happening again this year. A reverse image search shows the exact same product photos on other retailer's websites. The customer service phone number rings until you get a message that the call cannot be completed as dialed, and the company claims to be a BBB-accredited business. “They never ship the item, and the customer is never able to contact the business, because this business is not actually at the location that's listed on their website,” said Campbell. Homeowners are also taking their decorations outside and hiring individuals to hang their lights, but sometimes they’re a no-show. "If you are interested in doing something like this, it is important that you do your research and it's not just a fly-by-night operation,” said Ted Carter, president of Pinehurst Landscaping. Alex Ovechkin has a broken left fibula and is expected to be out four to six weeks, an injury that pauses the Washington Capitals superstar captain’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record. The Capitals updated Ovechkin’s status Thursday after he was evaluated by team doctors upon returning from a three-game trip. The 39-year-old broke the leg in a shin-on-shin collision Monday night with Utah's Jack McBain, and some of his closest teammates knew it was not good news even before Ovechkin was listed as week to week and placed on injured reserve. “Everyone’s bummed out,” said winger Tom Wilson, who has played with Ovechkin since 2013. “We were sitting there saying: ‘This is weird. Like, it’s unbelievable that he’s actually hurt.’ It’s one of those things where like, he’s going to miss games? I’ve been around a long time, and it’s new to me.” Ovechkin in his first 19 seasons missed 59 games — and just 35 because of injury. A bullet was discovered just metres from a Melbourne synagogue targeted by arsonists last week as Jewish community members prepare to gather in solidarity against the anti-Semitic attack. The bullet was found by a boy outside the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea on Saturday afternoon. The discovery came a day after the building was significantly damaged in a firebombing attack in the early hours of Friday morning . Two congregants who were inside at the time preparing for morning prayers were evacuated, one suffering minor injuries. More than a thousand community members are expected to meet at an undisclosed location in Ripponlea to “stand against hate” on Sunday. The rally will finish with flowers being laid at the synagogue. “This rally is a moment to unite, reflect and reaffirm our shared commitment to resilience and togetherness in our community,” organisers J-United said. Slowly repeating bursts of intense radio waves from space have puzzled astronomers since they were discovered in 2022. In new research, we have for the first time tracked one of these pulsating signals back to its source: a common kind of lightweight star called a red dwarf, likely in a binary orbit with a white dwarf, the core of another star that exploded long ago. A slowly pulsing mystery In 2022, our team made an amazing discovery: periodic radio pulsations that repeated every 18 minutes, emanating from space. The pulses outshone everything nearby, flashed brilliantly for three months, then disappeared. We know some repeating radio signals come from a kind of neutron star called a radio pulsar, which spins rapidly (typically once a second or faster), beaming out radio waves like a lighthouse. The trouble is, our current theories say a pulsar spinning only once every 18 minutes should not produce radio waves. So we thought our 2022 discovery could point to new and exciting physics – or help explain exactly how pulsars emit radiation, which despite 50 years of research is still not understood very well. Hurley-Walker et al. 2024 / Astrophysical Journal Letters More slowly blinking radio sources have been discovered since then. There are now about ten known “long-period radio transients”. However, just finding more hasn’t been enough to solve the mystery. Searching the outskirts of the galaxy Until now, every one of these sources has been found deep in the heart of the Milky Way. This makes it very hard to figure out what kind of star or object produces the radio waves, because there are thousands of stars in a small area. Picture: YouTube/ European Southern Observatory (ESO) So, we started a campaign to scan the skies with the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope in Western Australia, which can observe 1,000 square degrees of the sky every minute. An undergraduate student at Curtin University, Csanád Horváth, processed data covering half of the sky, looking for these elusive signals in more sparsely populated regions of the Milky Way. And sure enough, we found a new source! Dubbed GLEAM-X J0704-37, it produces minute-long pulses of radio waves, just like other long-period radio transients. However, these pulses repeat only once every 2.9 hours, making it the slowest long-period radio transient found so far. Where are the radio waves coming from? We performed follow-up observations with the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa, the most sensitive radio telescope in the southern hemisphere. These pinpointed the location of the radio waves precisely: they were coming from a red dwarf star. These stars are incredibly common, making up 70 per cent of the stars in the Milky Way, but they are so faint that not a single one is visible to the naked eye. Combining historical observations from the Murchison Widefield Array and new MeerKAT monitoring data, we found that the pulses arrive a little earlier and a little later in a repeating pattern. This probably indicates that the radio emitter isn’t the red dwarf itself, but rather an unseen object in a binary orbit with it. Based on previous studies of the evolution of stars, we think this invisible radio emitter is most likely to be a white dwarf, which is the final endpoint of small to medium-sized stars like our own Sun. If it were a neutron star or a black hole, the explosion that created it would have been so large it should have disrupted the orbit. It takes two to tango So how do a red dwarf and a white dwarf generate a radio signal? The red dwarf probably produces a stellar wind of charged particles, just like our Sun does. When the wind hits the white dwarf’s magnetic field, it would be accelerated, producing radio waves. This could be similar to how the Sun’s stellar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetic field to produce beautiful aurora, and also low-frequency radio waves. We already know of a few systems like this, such as AR Scorpii, where variations in the brightness of the red dwarf imply that the companion white dwarf is hitting it with a powerful beam of radio waves every two minutes. None of these systems are as bright or as slow as the long-period radio transients, but maybe as we find more examples, we will work out a unifying physical model that explains all of them. On the other hand, there may be many different kinds of system that can produce long-period radio pulsations. Either way, we’ve learned the power of expecting the unexpected – and we’ll keep scanning the skies to solve this cosmic mystery. Seven of the nine Cardinal who saw action hit at least half his field goal attempts, led by Raynaud's 8-for-15 and Blakes' 7-for-13. Stanford finished 52.6 percent as a team. Both were deadly from the 3-point line as well, with Raynaud going 4-for-6 and Blakes 2-for-4. With Sellers adding 3-for-6, the Cardinal made 11 of their 23 attempts (47.8 percent) from beyond the arc. Raynaud also found time for five blocks, while Agarwal and Aidan Cammann shared Stanford rebound honors with seven. Blakes complemented his 20 points with a team-high six assists and two blocks. The Cardinal registered 19 assists on 30 baskets, while Cal had just five on its 30 hoops. Agarwal and Okpara each also scored in double figures with 11 points. The initiative aims to establish a modular and resilient cruise missile system that delivers a proportional response while ensuring essential adversary targets remain vulnerable. The goal is to deploy an operational system by fiscal year 2034, with prototype tests anticipated within the next three years. Sea-launched nuclear cruise missile The SLCM-N will be launched from Virginia-class attack submarines and is centered around an “All Up Round” (AUR) concept. This includes an expendable booster, a nuclear-capable cruise missile, and a launch canister, allowing underwater launches from Virginia Payload Tubes (VPT) or Virginia Payload Modules (VPM). Additionally, the Navy seeks missiles that are “as modular as possible,” incorporating both software and hardware, to ensure that modifications to the missile’s body or shared tactical systems don’t necessitate changes to the warhead payload interfaces or avionics related to the nuclear mission. “The open system approach is being adopted to facilitate future technical upgrades or technology enhancements as needed throughout the SLCM-N program’s lifespan,” the Navy’s request indicates. The United States originally introduced nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles during the mid-1980s with the deployment of the TLAM-N, a nuclear variant of the Tomahawk Land-Attack Missile. These missiles, which had a range of about 2,500 kilometers (approximately 1,550 miles), were positioned on both surface vessels and attack submarines. After 3 decades In 1991, President George H.W. Bush declared the withdrawal of all sea-based tactical nuclear weapons, resulting in the removal of TLAM-N missiles by the middle of 1992. The Navy kept the option to redeploy them on attack submarines if necessary. However, in 2010, the Obama Administration recommended decommissioning the TLAM-N system, considering it redundant in light of other available nuclear capabilities. This retirement was finalized in 2013. The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) under the Trump Administration advocated for the development of a novel nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile, now referred to as SLCM-N. This initiative aimed to provide a “non-strategic regional presence” and fulfill the need for “flexible and low-yield options” within the US nuclear arsenal. The SLCM-N was designed to enhance deterrence against regional threats and reassure US allies. Allocation of funds In its Fiscal Year 2022 budget proposal, the Biden Administration allocated funding for the research and development of the SLCM-N. Nonetheless, the 2022 NPR suggested discontinuing the program, indicating that current capabilities were adequate to meet deterrent requirements. Despite this, Congress continued to fund the SLCM-N and its associated warhead. The Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act required the executive branch to ensure the SLCM-N’s initial operational capability. Following this, the Administration has begun to take steps to implement the program. Supporters of the SLCM-N contend that it provides a flexible and survivable nuclear option capable of deployment in various regions without needing to station nuclear assets on allied territories. The SLCM-N would fulfill a critical role as a sea-based nuclear deterrent below the strategic level on the nuclear escalation ladder, emphasizing that the commander-in-chief should have access to such options. Similar to its predecessor, the Navy’s discontinued TLAM-N, the SLCM-N is envisioned as a lower-yield nuclear weapon launched from submarines that would add a new dimension to the maritime segment of the nuclear triad, allowing the United States to respond proportionately to a limited nuclear attack by an adversary.
