The hosts are second in the table with 32 points and drew 1-1 draw with Millwall on Saturday, while the visitors are sixth with 26 points after 16 games and drew 2-2 with Norwich City on November 23. Sunderland are currently level on points with first-placed Leeds, and though both sides have conceded just 12 times, the Black Cats' tally of 26 goals scored is two fewer than the league leaders. These returns mean that Tuesday's hosts rank as the division's third best offensive and joint fourth best defensive team. The Black Cats controlled the first half against Millwall, taking the lead after 10 minutes while limiting their opponents to just one shot, but they eventually succumbed to the Lions in the second half when they conceded a 93rd-minute equaliser. Manager Regis Le Bris suggested that his side would have taken three points against Millwall had the team used the ball better, telling reporters: ""We won the first contacts often and after the second ball, we often were not able to keep the ball when it was possible. We had a big space to exploit, as was the case just before the equaliser." Le Bris's players have not experienced defeat in their last nine games, but they have failed to achieve victory in any of their past four matches. Sunderland have also drawn two of their three most recent fixtures at the Stadium of Light, though they are unbeaten in their seven home games this term, winning five. Opponents West Brom produced double Norwich's total of 11 shots, though both teams had an equal share of possession and created two big chances. Manager Carlos Corberan said that he believed his team edged proceedings, but noted his displeasure with his side's defensive display, saying: "The team has taken a positive step in attack but at the same time we have suffered more chances and goals than we want to suffer in the first half." The Baggies occupy the final promotion playoff spot in the Championship thanks to having better goal difference than seventh-placed Watford. Interestingly, while West Brom's return of 18 goals scored is the worst among the sides in the top 13, their record of 11 goals conceded is only bettered by third-placed Sheffield United and fourth-placed Burnley. Corberan will be alarmed by the Baggies' form, as while they have not lost in eight games, they failed to score on four occasions in that period, drawing seven times. West Brom have also only won once in their five most recent away outings, losing once and being held to a stalemate three times. The hosts will be unable to call upon forwards Ahmed Abdullahi and Ian Poveda , while Aaron Connolly is a doubt due to a knock. In their absence, Eliezer Mayenda , Milan Aleksic and Tom Watson could start behind striker Wilson Isidor . Sunderland are also set to be without defenders Jenson Seelt and Niall Huggins , as well as midfielder Salis Abdul Samed , so expect to see a backline consisting of Luke O'Nien , Chris Mepham , Daniel Ballard and Ajibola-Joshua Alese . However, Jobe Bellingham is set to return after serving the last of his three-match suspension against Millwall, and he will almost certainly partner Dan Neil in a double pivot. West Brom will have to cope with the absence of right-back Darnell Furlong , who is suspended as a result of accumulating too many yellow cards, and he may be replaced by Reece Hall . Centre-backs Kyle Bartley , Patrick McNair and Semi Ajayi are unlikely to appear again until early December, and perhaps the away side will deploy Mason Holgate and Torbjorn Heggem in the heart of defence. Striker Daryl Dike has also been ruled out until the middle of next month, and this could mean Karlan Grant and Josh Maja continue to lead the forward line. Sunderland possible starting lineup: Patterson; O'Nien, Mepham, Ballard, Alese; Bellingham, Neil; Mayenda, Aleksic, Watson; Isidor West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup: Palmer; Hall, Holgate, Heggem, Styles; Fellows, Molumby, Mowatt, Johnston; Maja, Grant Despite West Brom scoring twice last time out, they have found difficulties in front of goal recently and it would not be surprising if they failed to score once again. However, Sunderland have struggled for victories in the past weeks and though the hosts will no doubt be buoyed by their home crowd, Tuesday's clash will likely be a close affair. PLANS are in place to invest £21million into the Adventure Parc Snowdonia site which closed last year. Global Shred Ventures Ltd wants to help “bring life back” into the Dolgarrog site, formerly known as Surf Snowdonia, which opened in 2015 but shut in September 2023. On the company’s behalf, Cadnant Planning has compiled a draft application for the redevelopment of the existing surfing lagoon, siting of 21 holiday lodges, and alterations and extensions to the existing Adrenaline Indoors building in order to accommodate a new leisure attraction by way of a “Snowtunnel”. If successful, the plans would offer 75 new jobs, 20 of which are expected to be full-time. Cadnant Planning said: “The development of the site by the Ainscough family in 2015 was not without its challenges. Alongside pioneering the new inland surfing technology that had never been commercially delivered before in the world, the site required significant investment levels. “However, the family were committed to the project long-term to give the site a future. “Unfortunately, the regular mechanical failures of the surf technology installed at Surf Snowdonia led to eight faltering seasons (yet successful in many other ways) and the business had to take the tough decision to close the surf lagoon in mid-2023. “The site now has the opportunity to house another world-class visitor attraction using a new surfing technology. “Adventure Parc Snowdonia Ltd have been working closely with the applicant, Global Shred Ventures Ltd, to develop a proposal which would redevelop parts of the Adventure Parc Snowdonia site to bring the existing surfing lagoon back into use by way of introducing a new wave generation technology (Wavegarden’s ‘The Cove’ surfing technology) which is now tried, tested and proven to create a new surfing experience at the site. “Part of the existing surfing lagoon would be filled to create a new plateau to accommodate a new lodge development, together with a shore-side/beach area for visitors to enjoy. “Alongside this, alterations, refurbishment and extensions are proposed to the existing Adrenaline Indoors building at the site, to accommodate a new indoor leisure and tourism attraction, known as ‘Snowtunnel’. “The Snowtunnel attraction would provide snowboarders, skiers and other snow sports lovers the chance to participate in their sports all year round, anytime, in any weather, close to home. “It brings to the snow industry, what wave pools and wind tunnels have brought to the surf and skydiving industries.” Comments on the proposed development must submitted by December 23, and can be emailed to . A public consultation event will also be undertaken on December 4 between 4-7pm at the Hilton Garden Inn Snowdonia, Dolgarrog. In March this year, Zip World took on the site’s indoor activity facility by opening “Zip World Conwy” at the premises. The Republic of Korea’s ascent as a global beacon of liberal democracy and capitalism has been built on its robust alliance with the United States. Now this exemplary democracy faces its most significant challenge in decades. It is clearer by the day that President Yoon Suk Yeol’s recent failed attempt to invoke martial law was just the beginning of a major crisis that risks the collapse of the South Korean government and a politically motivated conflict with North Korea. The United States must act decisively by unequivocally condemning South Korea’s democratic backsliding, supporting its constitutional mechanisms for self-correction and strengthening regional security amid its ally’s internal crisis. The situation has grown more unstable by the day. After swiftly overturning Yoon’s declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, the National Assembly moved to impeach the president on Saturday. Yoon responded by announcing that he would essentially hand over the remainder of his term to members of his ruling party, the People Power Party. This prompted party members to abstain, dooming the impeachment vote, which requires a supermajority. In the aftermath, the leader of the ruling party, Han Dong-hoon, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced their intention to jointly take over governance, a move one politician deemed a “second coup” and legal experts said wasn’t constitutional. As politicians work to revive the impeachment process, one member of the opposition party has claimed that shortly before martial law was declared, Yoon’s defense minister, Kim Yong-hyun, ordered strikes on North Korean balloon-launch sites meant to incite military conflict and justify the imposition of martial law. The National Assembly member cited a tip from a credible military source. However, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a statement to the website NK News, denied that Kim had planned a strike. Kim resigned last week as defense minister and was arrested this week on allegations of abuse of power . Within 24 hours of the martial law order, the United States responded by reaffirming its support for “the people of Korea” and the two nations’ alliance “based on shared principles of democracy and the rule of law.” Now it should be much clearer: The State Department should issue a clear official statement denouncing Yoon’s unjustifiable actions. A unified international voice, led by the U.S., has often been crucial in countering antidemocratic moves. During Peru’s 2022 political crisis, for example, the U.S. made strong public statements through the embassy, secretary of State, and State Department, rejecting “extra-constitutional” actions and advocating democratic reforms . This pressure contributed to President Pedro Castillo’s removal and encouraged his successor, Dina Boluarte, to engage with opposition forces and prioritize reforms. Similarly, South Korea has seen widespread protests against Yoon’s incompetent and irrational leadership. The United States must urge Yoon and all of South Korea’s leaders to respect the will of the people and safeguard the country’s constitutional framework. At the same time, South Korea’s democratic allies, including the United States, must not cooperate in political asylum requests or escape attempts tied to the crisis. To ensure justice, all those involved in the martial law declaration must face accountability through democratic and constitutional procedures. Historically, South Korea has overcome political crises through self-correction and democratic resilience . From resisting foreign invasions during the monarchy to championing pro-democracy movements and impeaching scandal-ridden President Park Geun-hye in 2017, vigilant citizens have held politicians accountable and strengthened the nation’s political system. South Korea’s robust civil society must be honored and acknowledged by the United States and other allies. Beyond diplomatic measures, the United States should raise its military alert levels in East Asia to ensure regional stability amid the potential security vacuum created by South Korea’s political crisis. Key defense institutions, such as the Ministry of Defense and the National Intelligence Service, face operational challenges because of the investigations, resignations and political chaos caused by the martial law crisis. These vulnerabilities could be exploited by North Korea or other adversaries through military provocations or intelligence operations. South Korea is a crucial frontline defender of liberal democracy globally and a buffer against authoritarian regimes in East Asia. It also plays a vital role in America’s supply chains, particularly for semiconductors. Preserving regional stability is essential not only for South Korea but also for U.S. national interests. This is no ordinary political crisis. Because of Yoon’s actions, South Korea now faces a grave threat to its political system, with risks of autocracy and conflict with North Korea. This is not only a test of political resilience but a fight for democracy’s survival. The United States, speaking forcefully, can help its ally rise from the brink. This crisis is a defining test of U.S. leadership, signaling whether America still champions democracy globally. Will Daewook Kwon and Jaemin Park are fellows at the Harvard Kennedy School. Levis throws 2 TD passes to help Titans outlast Texans 32-27Todd Grantham is leaving the staff of the NFL's Saints to become the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, New Orleans interim coach Darren Rizzi said Monday. Grantham has been defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL and for Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Florida at the college level. “He made the decision he wanted to get back into the college game," Rizzi said. “He’s obviously been a coordinator before at a couple of really good college programs. (Oklahoma State coach) Mike Gundy’s getting a great coach, and congratulations to Todd.” An Oklahoma State spokesperson would not comment on the situation. Grantham started this season as a defensive line coach for the Saints. After Rizzi took over following the firing of Dennis Allen, who’d previously overseen the defense, Grantham was moved into the role of senior defensive advisor so he could assist coordinator Joe Woods with the defensive game plan. “He’s done a heck of a job here behind scenes here with the defensive staff,” Rizzi said. “But it’s certainly a great opportunity for him.” Grantham will replace Bryan Nardo and take over a unit that gave up a Big 12-worst 500.6 yards per contest during a 3-9 season. Every winter, like migratory birds, people working on climate change flock to some distant location. This year, it was the Caspian seashore of Baku in Azerbaijan. They don’t do this to escape the pollution of north India. They do it because they believe that if all countries come together at the annual climate summit of the UN (called the COP), they will be able to solve the problem of climate change. This has been going on for 29 years. This year’s COP29 started in inauspicious circumstances. The US elected Donald Trump, who will withdraw his country from the Paris Agreement on climate change, just as he did in 2016, meaning that the world’s richest economy will not offer any new climate finance. Germany, usually an advocate for European contributions to climate finance , saw its coalition govt collapse. Experts had estimated the need to raise $2.4 trillion per year for nature and climate, but COP29 closed with a kitty of only $300 billion per year by 2035. This is barely more than the earlier pot of $100 billion per year after allowing for inflation. And it will count not just grants that poor, vulnerable countries need, but also loans that they will have to repay, and money spent by developing countries themselves. Quite naturally, people might question the benefit of this multilateral process. If rich countries are not paying up, why should we have to answer to anyone? Three developments at COP29 show the relevance of continued engagement for India. First, many countries announced new targets to cut their greenhouse gas emissions . The UK’s emissions are now half of what they were in 1990, and it pledged to cut them by 81% of 1990 levels by 2035. Though it is a developing economy, Brazil announced that it will cut its emissions by at least 59% from 2005 levels by 2035. Indonesia and Mexico committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Such announcements send signals to Indian industry about potential markets. For example, with the European Union banning the sale of diesel or petrol cars after 2035 as part of its climate policy, Indian car makers could plan a shift to electric vehicle manufacturing, and Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can start pivoting to making electrical components and reskilling their workers. Similarly, with the new climate finance deal at COP29, multilateral development banks like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank will target their lending to climate-friendly activities, and Indian state govts can prepare project proposals for the needs identified in their State Action Plans on Climate Change. Second, COP29 agreed on the rules of the international carbon market, which can be a useful source of revenue for projects in India. It adopted common standards for methodologies to accurately measure and credit emission reductions, developed a sustainable development tool for social and environmental safeguards, and found a way to link carbon credit registries across countries. This means that Indian companies, MSME clusters, municipalities and gram panchayats will be able to sell carbon credits in three types of markets — the Indian carbon market that is being designed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the voluntary carbon market that already exists, and the international carbon market made possible by COP29. The Indian govt has already published a list of preferred project types that are more expensive and can benefit from international carbon credit revenue — not just solar power, but solar power with storage; not only onshore wind, but offshore wind; and emerging technologies like green hydrogen, green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel, and carbon capture and storage. Third, next year’s COP30 hosted by Brazil in the Amazon rainforest will give as much priority to nature as to climate. This is important for our country too. For example, as India scales up its solar parks over the next few decades, it will be important to protect biodiversity and people’s livelihoods that depend on natural resources. We also have opportunities for behaviour change, such as switching to millets that need less irrigation. And we can reduce food waste — one study estimated almost 1,000 tons of food waste a year in 500 wedding halls in Bengaluru alone. COP30 is also planning a new treaty for tracing the supply chains of critical minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt needed for renewable energy, electric vehicles and batteries. There are growing concerns in India about e-waste, mining, and import dependence, and this topic was discussed in India’s G-20 presidency last year. We can find value in e-waste and create rural jobs based on a circular economy to extract and process critical minerals. Like its colourful rainforest birds, perhaps the Brazil COP next year will bring a more vibrant outcome. Kelkar is executive program director for climate, economics and finance at WRI India.
