While Crunchyroll might be king when it comes to streaming anime, Netflix has really stepped up its game in the last few years, exclusively licensing some fantastic series worldwide that otherwise might not have made the jump. It's also helped create some through its Netflix Animation unit, and the results speak for themselves — the service is filled with countless high-quality anime series, making it a serious competitor for the Sony-owned Crunchyroll. So what are the best anime series on Netflix? That's the question we set out to answer, and with our collective experience watching way too much anime, came up with this non-exhaustive list of the best anime series on Netflix. We tried to go for a wide variety of genres and styles, and included some that might stretch the definition of "anime," but everything on here is worth checking out. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a gorgeous prequel to CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, and tells the story of a street kid named David who loses it all in a horrific attack. To survive in the dystopian landscape that is Night City, David chooses to turn to the seedy underbelly of the city to become an Edgerunner. It's animated by Studio Trigger, one of the best animation studios in anime today, and is filled with charm, heart, and neon vibes. Neon Genesis Evangelion Speaking of neon, Neon Genesis Evangelion is probably one of the most well-known mech anime series of all time — at least in the West. NGE has everything you'd want from a mech anime: big monsters to defeat, huge mechs, and intense storytelling. You'll want to steel yourself before strapping into Eva, because it certainly goes to some wild and uncomfortable places, especially in the movies, but it's well worth a watch for any anime fan. Kotaro Lives Alone Kotaro Lives Alone is an absolutely heart wrenching anime series that follows four-year-old Kotaro, a strange young boy who moves into an apartment by himself next to an overworked manga artist. We won't spoil how or why Kotaro lives alone – that's better left experienced yourself – but watch this one with a friend or a loved one. It's a beautiful series, but one that will leave you in tears at times. Little Witch Academia Ah Studio Trigger, is there anything you can't do? Little Witch Academia is a series about a young girl named Atsuko who enrolls at a magical academy but isn't particularly great at magic. It's a series about friendship, about finding magic in the world, and about persevering through every challenge life throws your way. Beastars Beastars has it all: drama, fantasy, 8-foot-tall anthropomorphized wolf-men. Set in a world where everyone is an animal and eating meat is illegal, the murder and devourment of an alpaca sends Cherryton Academy into a tense environment for carnivores and herbivores alike. This is a series dripping with metaphor, wild storytelling, and some really great character work. Pokémon Journeys You already know what Pokémon is, so let's cut to the chase: Pokémon Journeys is Ash Ketchum's final journey through the Pokémon world. He teams up with another young trainer, Goh, and travels around eight different regions as both characters work towards their ideal of becoming a Pokémon master. It's an exciting and touching end to a character that graced our screens for 25 years, and it's a must-watch for any Pokémon fan. Komi Can't Communicate Komi is a high school girl who's apparently one of the most beautiful girls most people have ever seen. When she starts at an elite school, everyone wants to know her... but despite wanting to know them too, she suffers from severe social anxiety that makes it almost impossible for her to talk to anyone outside of her family. Over the course of the series she learns to overcome her anxiety and start to make friends, have conversations, and get emotionally invested in her classmates. It's a lovely story with some top-notch character writing, and worth watching for anyone who struggles to be around other people sometimes. Aggretsuko In this Sanrio series, Retsuko – a 25-year-old red panda – is faced with the frustrations of everyday life as she works through a pencil-pushing job that drives her batty. To let out her frustrations, Retsuko visits a karaoke bar to sing death metal, which is incredible imagery that always delivers. Aggretsuko starts strong and keeps getting stronger with each episode and is filled with moments and storylines that will make you think "damn, same girl." Carole and Tuesday Shinichiro Watanabe is perhaps best known for his work directing Cowboy Bebop, but Carole & Tuesday shows just how much range he has as a director. In the near future on a terraformed Mars, a young girl named Tuesday runs away from her wealthy family to pursue her dream of becoming a musician. She has a chance encounter with orphaned refugee Carole, and the two join forces to make their music dreams a reality. This is a really touching series with some incredible music, and it's an absolute blast in both its Japanese and English dubs. Kimi ni Todoke Kimi ni Todoke sounds like a joke when you read its synopsis: a 15-year-old high school girl is hated by just about everyone because she looks like the creepy girl from The Ring, but manages to start a fledgling romance with the most popular boy in school. It sounds silly on its face, but that's just a trick to lure you in and gut-punch you with the most charming, wholesome story you'll ever see in an anime. Kimi ni Todoke also has a very good live-action adaptation on Netflix, so you're spoiled for choice when it comes to watching this series. Arcane Arcane isn't strictly an anime as most people in the West would define it, having been animated by French studio Fortiche, but it's got the same vibes so it's worth a mention. This series is based on the popular MOBA League of Legends, and focuses on sisters Vi and Jinx as they navigate the apparently utopian city of Piltover. Arcane was met with positive reviews across the board, praised for its storytelling, animation, world-building, and nuanced characterisation. Arcane is enjoyable to absolutely everyone, LoL fans or not, though it's worth noting that it's probably not quite child-friendly. Just a heads up. Castlevania Castlevania is, once again, not animated in Japan, but it's still a masterful adaptation of one of the most beloved franchises in gaming. Castlevania is loosely based on Castlevania 3, and has legendary vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and son of evil Alucard as they take on the famed lord of darkness, Dracula. It's animated beautifully, written extremely well, and has some of the best fight scenes in anything on Netflix. Its sequel series Castlevania: Nocturne is similarly fantastic, so you've got plenty to catch up on. Delicious in Dungeon The less you know about this wonderful anime series before diving in, the better. It's a fantastic series with top-notch writing, gorgeous animation, and some of the best character work in the field. Stop reading this list and go watch it right now.Dec. 29—LOS ANGELES — Chatting with the small Flyers media contingent in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday after the team returned to action with a spirited practice, John Tortorella spoke like a proud papa about Noah Cates. "You never know, right?" he said. "You just never know when it clicks in on players, and I'm proud of him. Very quiet kid and out of the lineup at the beginning of the year, he takes it and he just gets himself ready, and I think he has established himself as a really good player offensively and defensively for us right now." Cates tallied five goals and nine points in 16 games at the end of the 2021-22 season after ending his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He had 38 points (13 goals, 25 assists) in 82 games during Tortorella's first season with the Flyers when he was primarily moved from wing to center. But last season, he struggled to find his game and had just 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) in 59 games while missing 22 with a broken foot suffered Nov. 25 against the New York Islanders. This season, Cates was a healthy scratch for four of the Flyers' first five games with Jett Luchanko making his NHL debut. He started slowly with one assist in his first 12 games but has taken off since being united with Bobby Brink and Tyson Foerster on — coincidentally — Nov. 25 against the Vegas Golden Knights. The trio has become the Flyers' top line in terms of reliability, puck possession, puck support, energy, and, of course, production. According to Money Puck, the three players lead the Flyers' forwards in puck possession across the last 10 games at five-on-five with Cates (59.9%) atop the list. Foerster (58.9%) and Brink (58.6%) are not far behind. "We're just doing the right things and playing hockey the right way and just supporting each other," Cates said after he scored for the fifth straight game in a 3-1 win against Anaheim on Saturday. "Kind of the message that Torts has kind of given us, being close and supporting each other because there are breakdowns, but if you have a guy close for support, you can limit the breakdowns and teams countering on us. So I think the biggest thing is staying close, and every line should do that and can do that, and I think we're a good example of it." The confidence they are showing is evident. In the 15 games they have skated together, they have a combined 25 points, with Foerster leading the way with 10. But Cates is clearly the driver on that line. He is the veteran among the trio at 25, and his checking and pressure game and puck support have given Tortorella the confidence to move him to the second power-play unit, too. "He's winning faceoffs. He has played well for a while now. His stick work, his strength on the puck, his utility for me, using him at the end of games, having two centers. Now he's on the power play. He deserves to be on the power play," Tortorella said. "And quite honestly, it's a lesson for all the lines, as far as how those three are always together, the support of it." Let's break down the support and why it works, focusing on Cates' five-goal streak. Better Together As Jack Johnson sang, "It's always better when we're together." On the goal Saturday afternoon in Anaheim, Brink used his speed and legs to take the puck down behind the net before feeding Cates in the slot. Part of what worked well on this goal was Brink faking a move to the net that pulled Anaheim goalie Lukáš Dostál out of position but if you look at the screenshot from the NBCSP telecast, the Flyers have four guys from the hash marks in — Cam York was up high — and have the five Ducks pinned low and all watching Brink. Foerster was right there with Cates for support and Travis Sanheim is at the right post as an option, too. Last Man Standing Willie Nelson may have been on to something when he sang: "I don't wanna be the last man standin', or wait a minute maybe I do?" Cates wasn't the last man standing technically for his goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins a week ago, but he was the final forward entering the zone. Because he was the trailer, no one was paying much attention to him as Brink, and, especially Foerster, were cutting the ice in half. Cates, who could have gone farther to the right, made the right play and didn't go to the open ice. If he had, it would have not only made for a harder pass distance-wise but the feed from Brink would have had a lower probability of getting through more sticks and bodies. "They're just together," Tortorella said after the game against Pittsburgh. "They support the puck well. They spend a lot of time in the offensive zone because they're around it, they're not spread out. I think they're checking very well. It's been probably one of our better lines for quite a while here now." Silver screen On his game-tying goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Saturday, Cates was in front of the net and able to pounce on the rebound. A defensive-minded center — Travis Konecny told The Inquirer last year "He's like the younger [Sean Couturier]" — Cates can be the net-front presence because his linemates are supporting the puck and being in positions where they can get back defensively if needed. At 6-foot-2, Cates was a big body in front of the 6-3 Columbus goalie Elvis Merzļikins and outmuscled defenseman Zach Werenski for the marker. He knows how to spell checking Cates was wide open down the slot and able to receive the pass from Brink because of the play the 5-8 forward made along the boards. Brink turned on the jets and outmuscled 6-foot defenseman Mikey Anderson to retrieve the puck. It was a play Brink could not pull off last year — as Tortorella said earlier in December, Brink "didn't know how to spell 'checking' last year" — but has played hard on the puck this year and has been using his body to create time, space and goals. Triangle man As the band They Might Be Giants know, "Triangle wins." One of the most basic offensive zone strategies in hockey is having the forwards create a triangle. It is not only about puck support and having a high man but creates a bit of turmoil for the team defending. Just before the screenshot below of Cates' goal against the Detroit Red Wings, the Flyers trio had a triangle in the left corner as they forechecked to recover the puck. Cates went from the corner to the front after they got it back and is once again screening the goalie — you can see in the screen shot the 6-1 Alex Lyon is trying to look around him — and the Flyers maintained the triangle. The shot by Foerster ended up going in off the body of Cates and in. Breakaways With Sam Ersson in net Saturday against the Ducks, the expectation is that Aleksei Kolosov will start Sunday against the Kings (9 p.m., NBCSP). Qaradawi, also a poet, was detained on Saturday as he arrived from Syria at the Masnaa border crossing due to an Egyptian arrest warrant, the official said. The warrant was “based on an Egyptian judiciary ruling” sentencing Qaradawi in absentia to five years’ jail on charges of “opposing the state and inciting terrorism,” the official added. His father was prominent Sunni scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is outlawed in Egypt. The late scholar was imprisoned several times in Egypt over his links to the Muslim Brotherhood. He died in 2022, after decades in exile in Qatar. Lebanese authorities “will ask the Egyptian authorities” to transfer Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi’s file for examination, the judicial official said, requesting anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media. The judiciary will make a recommendation on whether “the conditions are met for him to be extradited” and the matter will be referred to the Lebanese government, which must make the final decision, the official added. Qaradawi was a political organizer against the government of longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled in 2011 in the Arab Spring uprising. He later became a vocal opponent of current Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who in 2013 overthrew elected president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood. A family friend told AFP that Qaradawi holds Turkish citizenship and was returning from a visit to Syria, where rebels led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad on December 8. Assad’s ousting came more than 13 years after war broke out in Syria with the brutal repression of anti-government protests in 2011. Qaradawi had posted a video online taken at Damascus’s Umayyad mosque, celebrating Assad’s fall, expressing hope for “victory” in other Arab Spring countries including Egypt, and warning Syrians of “malicious regimes” in “the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt,” who he described as “Zionist-affiliated states.” The video has circulated widely, including on Egyptian media, where local outlets have described it as “insulting.” Some commentators close to Sissi’s government have demanded Qaradawi be handed over to Egyptian authorities. Cairo blacklisted the Muslim Brotherhood as a “terrorist” organization in 2013, and has since jailed thousands of its members and supporters and executed dozens. Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s daughter Ola was detained in Egypt for four and a half years over her links to the organization. She was released in 2021. Rights groups say Egyptian authorities have detained tens of thousands of people as political prisoners. Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Arc'teryx makes some of the most fashionable and functional gorpware money can buy, which is a problem if you like high-tech outerwear but hate breaking the bank. Fortunately, Black Friday is here and the jacket gods have smiled upon us in the form of deep savings on my absolute favorite Arc'teryx jacket. For the first time in what feels like a zillion years, the Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody can be yours for just $168 , which is 30% off retail price. You'll need to spring for the blue option for the biggest savings — the Atom SL Hoody in black is only 15% off — but, let's be real, it's the most attractive of the three colors shown. So, what makes the Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody such a serious banger? For starters, it weighs just 9.5 ounces and can be packed down into a compact mass, making it a no-brainer to toss in your bag and bring along. The outside is treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) to keep you dry in light precipitation, while stretchy fleece side panels provide excellent ventilation and allow for maximum mobility. Despite weighing next to nothing, strategically placed synthetic insulation around the chest and back does a mighty fine job keeping you warm in temperatures down into the mid-40s. There's also a stowable and cinchable storm hood, plenty of zippered pockets, an adjustable hem and elastic cuffs. My favorite aspect of the Atom SL Hoody, however, is its adaptable disposition. When the weather's not too chilly, it can be worn as your main outerwear, but when the temps drop, it's also a great insulating layer, especially when worn with a proper winter jacket over it. Living in Seattle, Washington where it's 45 degrees Fahrenheit and raining 250 days of the year, the Atom SL Hoody is also my go-to option for wearing underneath a rain shell, particularly because of how breathable it is. In addition to all the technology and versatility, Arc'teryx is also a brand that stands by its products, offering a generous warranty policy for the life of the jacket with reasonably priced (sometimes free) repairs and replacements for worn-out garments. This is just another reason I'm such a big fan of Arc'teryx. Looking for more awesome Black Friday apparel savings?
