SAN DIEGO (AP) — With his stellar America’s Cup career behind him, Jimmy Spithill introduced his new Red Bull Italy SailGP Team on Thursday in Dubai just ahead of the opening regatta of the global league’s fifth season. Spithill, the team’s CEO and founder, pulled a major coup by hiring his old America’s Cup crewmate and fellow Australian, wing trimmer Kyle Langford, from the Australian team that dominated SailGP for the first three seasons. Italy, SailGP's 12th team, sailed its foiling 50-foot catamaran for the first time Thursday. After practice racing on Friday, the opening regatta will be Saturday and Sunday. “It’s been definitely a big push,” Spithill said in a video interview with The Associated Press. “It’s all come up really quick. We’re almost there.” Spithill left the U.S. SailGP team in November after 2 1⁄2 seasons to focus on starting the Italian team and on sailing in this year’s America’s Cup. He was co-helmsman of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, which was eliminated by INEOS Britannia in the challenger finals. Double Olympic gold medalist Ruggero Tita will helm the Italian team, while two-time bronze medalist and recent Women’s America’s Cup winner Giulia Fava will be the strategist and Italian national champion Andrea Tesei will be the flight controller. Alex Sinclair also followed Spithill, joining grinders Matteo Celon and Enrico Voltolini, who have extensive high-performance and America’s Cup experience. Spithill said his crew has “some absolute next-generation stars, from different backgrounds, Olympics, America’s Cup, and it’s just awesome having Kyle come in.” Spithill, 45, said he’ll be on the boat only if someone gets hurt or sick. “These young guys are too good at it,” he said. “The talent that’s coming through in Italy, I mean, the results do the talking.” More stars having been switching teams in SailGP, which was co-founded by tech billionaire Larry Ellison. Signing Langford is a big deal for the new team. Shortly before the 2013 America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay, Langford was promoted to Oracle’s race crew after wing trimmer Dirk de Ridder was suspended by an international jury. With Emirates Team New Zealand at match point at 8-1, Spithill skippered Oracle to eight straight wins in one of the greatest comebacks in sports to retain the Cup. “One thing that really attracted him was a chance to start out and really play a major role with the new team and especially the emerging talent,” Spithill said. “It would have been really easy for him to say, ‘You know what? I’m comfortable with the Aussies.’ But the fact that he’s stepped out of his comfort zone and he’s challenging himself as an athlete in this stage of his career is just massive.” While talented, the Italian crew will have the least experience together in the high-performance F50 catamaran. Spithill said Langford “is going to play a huge role in getting this team up to speed. I mean, the F50 is, without a doubt, probably the hardest boat to sail out there.” After sailing for Luna Rossa in three of his eight America’s Cup campaigns, Spithill has seen how passionate Italian fans are. “When you talk about an exciting market for the sport, I mean, it doesn’t get any better than Italy,” he said. “It has a huge following in Italy and they’ve got a real cultural attachment to the ocean and the sport itself.” Spithill said immediately after Luna Rossa’s loss in early October that it was time to step away from the America’s Cup. “The point is, we didn’t get the job done so I hold myself accountable for that. And I also am seeing firsthand that this next generation of talent coming through and I believe they deserve a shot, you know?” “I really think SailGP is the future of the sport. The whole regular season, the concept makes a lot of sense,” he said. Dubai is the first of 14 regattas. At season’s end, the top three crews will race in the $2 million, winner-take-all Grand Final. Also Thursday, Rolex was announced as SailGP's first title sponsor as part of a 10-year deal. Bernie Wilson has covered sailing for The Associated Press since 1991.Long Island Personal Injury Attorney Keetick L. Sanchez Releases Informative Article on Personal Injury Claims 12-02-2024 11:06 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society Press release from: ABNewswire Long Island personal injury attorney [ https://accidentlawyer-queens.com/long-island-personal-injury-attorney/ ] Keetick L. Sanchez of K L Sanchez Law Office, P.C. has recently published an in-depth article addressing the complexities of personal injury claims on Long Island. The article sheds light on the types of accidents that fall under personal injury law, the challenges victims face in securing compensation, and the importance of having legal representation when pursuing claims. As a seasoned Long Island personal injury attorney, Sanchez underscores the difficulties accident victims encounter when dealing with insurance companies and managing the legal system. The article serves as a resource for those who have suffered injuries due to negligence and are seeking to understand their rights and options. "Every day, people are injured in accidents that could have been prevented if others had acted responsibly," says Long Island personal injury attorney Keetick L. Sanchez. "Whether it's a car crash, a workplace injury, or a slip and fall on someone else's property, these incidents often leave victims facing not only physical pain but also financial and emotional hardships. The goal is to provide victims with the tools and support they need to rebuild their lives." The article provides a detailed overview of various types of personal injury accidents, including motor vehicle crashes, workplace accidents, premises liability claims, product liability cases, and wrongful death claims. Sanchez explains that personal injury law allows victims to seek compensation for a wide range of damages, such as medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and even future costs related to ongoing care. "Insurance companies are often more focused on their profits than on fairly compensating victims," Sanchez explains. "This is why having an attorney is so crucial. Studies have shown that individuals with legal representation are more likely to receive a fair settlement compared to those who try to handle claims on their own." The Long Island personal injury attorney explains the different forms of compensation available to personal injury victims, such as reimbursement for medical bills, lost income, property damage, and non-economic damages like pain and suffering. Sanchez stresses the importance of documenting injuries and losses thoroughly to build a strong case. The article also discusses the statute of limitations for personal injury cases in New York, which is typically three years from the date of the injury. However, when suing a municipal entity, victims must file a notice of claim within 90 days and have only one year and 90 days to initiate legal action. Sanchez warns that missing these deadlines can result in losing the right to seek compensation. Victims of accidents on Long Island face numerous challenges, from managing medical bills to negotiating with insurance companies. Keetick L. Sanchez's article highlights the importance of understanding one's legal rights and taking timely action to protect them. "Accidents can create ripple effects that impact every aspect of a person's life," Sanchez says. "The goal is to help victims regain control and secure the resources they need to move forward." The article serves as a guide for those who have been injured due to someone else's negligence. Victims are encouraged to consult with a personal injury attorney to evaluate their case and discuss their options for pursuing compensation. The advent of 3D printing technology has transformed the way cricket gear is designed, offering unparalleled customization opportunities. From personalized bats to bespoke protective gear, 3D printing is elevating cricket equipment to new heights. Let’s explore how this technology is changing the game for players worldwide. Cricket is a sport that requires precision, skill, and the right gear. While players have relied on traditional cricket equipment for years, 3D printing is ushering in a new era of personalized, high-performance gear. The technology enables manufacturers to create highly customized bats, pads, gloves, and helmets tailored to the specific needs of each player. With 3D printing, manufacturers can now design gear according to a player’s body measurements, playing style, and preferences. For instance, a bat can be crafted to match a player’s exact specifications, including weight distribution, handle length, and even grip texture. This ensures better performance and comfort while reducing the risk of injury. Such advancements are excellent news for betting enthusiasts. With fewer injuries, there’s less worry about unexpected changes to match outcomes. Don’t forget to use bonuses to maximize your long-term gains! 3D printing allows for cricket equipment tailored to individual players, improving comfort, performance, and safety. Instead of relying on mass-produced, generic equipment, manufacturers can create gear unique to a player’s needs. Custom Bat Designs: Players can have bats designed specifically for their playing style, with adjustments to weight, grip, and blade shape. : Protective gear can be molded to fit each player’s unique body shape, providing better comfort and protection. : Helmets can be adjusted for a perfect fit, offering enhanced safety without compromising mobility. Innovative Materials: 3D printing allows for the use of lighter yet more durable materials, making gear both comfortable and high-performing. By offering a personalized approach, 3D printing helps players improve their game and feel safer on the field. In cricket, comfort is paramount as players spend long hours on the field. Ill-fitting gear can lead to discomfort, poor performance, and even injuries. 3D printing addresses these issues by producing highly customized equipment that perfectly fits the player’s body. For example, cricket helmets can now be designed to match the precise contours of a player’s head. This not only enhances comfort but also increases safety, as helmets are less likely to slip or cause discomfort during play. Similarly, gloves and pads can be printed with ergonomic designs that align with a player’s natural movements, reducing friction and improving overall comfort. With equipment tailored to fit perfectly, players can focus on their game without distractions from ill-fitting or uncomfortable gear. One of the most exciting advantages of 3D printing in cricket gear is the ability to produce lightweight yet durable equipment. Traditional cricket gear can be heavy, making it cumbersome for players, especially when quick movements or sustained performance over long matches are required. 3D printing allows manufacturers to use advanced, lightweight materials that don’t compromise on durability. For instance: Item Traditional Weight 3D-Printed Weight Durability Cricket Bat 1.2 kg 1.0 kg High Cricket Pads 1.5 kg 1.2 kg Medium-High Cricket Gloves 250 g 200 g High These innovations provide players with strong, lightweight gear that stands up to the challenges of the game. Where Safety Meets Technology Safety is a top concern in cricket, and with 3D printing, protective gear is more advanced than ever. The technology enables the creation of equipment that offers better protection without adding bulk or weight. For example, helmets can now feature enhanced impact absorption and more efficient ventilation systems, thanks to 3D-printed designs. The precision of 3D printing also allows for intricate designs that improve the overall safety and comfort of the helmet. Similarly, protective pads can be printed with customized padding structures that target high-risk areas like the shin, knee, and elbow. This ensures players are well-protected while maintaining mobility and flexibility. One of the most exciting innovations in cricket gear is the ability to design personalized helmets and gloves using 3D printing. These products can be tailored to meet each player’s specific needs, offering enhanced safety and comfort while maintaining high-performance standards. Personalized helmets can now include adjustable features such as custom padding, improved ventilation, and design modifications that adapt to specific playing styles. Players can have helmets made to fit the shape of their heads perfectly, reducing discomfort over long hours on the field. Similarly, gloves can be designed with unique features like targeted padding, improved grip, and enhanced flexibility. The ergonomic design ensures gloves fit a player’s hands perfectly, boosting comfort and performance during play. Traditional cricket equipment manufacturing, especially for custom gear, can take weeks or even months. 3D printing significantly reduces this delivery time, enabling players to receive personalized equipment in a much shorter timeframe. Using 3D printing, manufacturers can produce custom-designed bats, pads, gloves, and helmets almost overnight, making the process faster and more efficient. The ability to quickly prototype and make adjustments also eliminates unnecessary delays, ensuring players have the gear they need without extended wait times. 3D printing is undoubtedly revolutionizing cricket equipment, offering players unparalleled levels of comfort, performance, and safety. With personalized designs, lightweight materials, and faster production times, this technology is setting new standards in the sport. Prototypes can be quickly produced and adjusted, allowing players to avoid unnecessary delays and receive their equipment faster. This is especially important in professional cricket, where time is a crucial factor, and customized equipment can significantly impact performance.
House Democrats Jim McGovern of Massachusetts and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut say their Republican colleagues in Congress caved to the demands of Elon Musk , sinking a bipartisan government funding bill that would have regulated U.S. investments in China. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are Congress passed a separate stopgap funding bill over the weekend, averting a government shutdown. In a series of posts on X, McGovern said more could have been accomplished. The scrapped provision "would have made it easier to keep cutting-edge AI and quantum computing tech — as well as jobs — in America," he wrote. "But Elon had a problem." Tesla , run by Musk, is the only foreign automaker to operate a factory in China without a local joint venture. Tesla also built a battery plant down the street from its Shanghai car factory this year, and aims to develop and sell self-driving vehicle technology in China. "His bottom line depends on staying in China's good graces," McGovern wrote about Musk. "He wants to build an AI data center there too — which could endanger U.S. security. He's been bending over backwards to ingratiate himself with Chinese leaders." SpaceX, Musk's aerospace and defense contractor, has reportedly withheld its Starlink satellite internet service over Taiwan at the request of Chinese and Russian leaders. Taiwan is a self-ruling democracy that Beijing claims as its territory. Taiwan's status is one of the biggest flashpoints in U.S.-China relations. DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, wrote in a letter to Congress on Friday that Musk needs "Chinese government approvals for his company's projects in the country." It's concerning, that Musk "has ingratiated himself with Chinese Communist Party leadership," she wrote. In the letter, DeLauro referred to the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as "President" Musk, alluding to the fact that the world's richest person began railing against the prior funding bill on Wednesday, before President-elect Donald Trump came out with a statement of his own. Trump had wanted the GOP to sink the bill, and issue a new one that would raise the debt ceiling so he could avoid that fight during the start of his second term in office. The stopgap funding bill, which President Joe Biden signed on Saturday, did not include the two-year suspension of the U.S. debt limit that Trump was seeking. Musk responded to DeLauro's concerns by calling her an "awful creature" in a post on X. After acquiring Twitter in 2022, Musk rebranded it X and used it to help propel Trump back into the White House, becoming a close adviser and major backer to the incoming president along the way. Musk contributed $277 million to the Trump campaign and other Republican causes during the 2024 cycle, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Since the election in November, Musk has become a nearly constant presence at Trump's side, including in meetings with foreign leaders . Trump appointed Musk to co-lead a group that's not yet formed, but will be tasked with finding ways to cut regulations, personnel and budgets. WATCH: Musk's influence on governmentEach week The Sunday Times speaks with State MPs ahead of the March election. This week we speak with Labor MP for Nedlands, Dr Katrina Stratton In 2012, my partner Steve was killed in a motorbike accident. He clipped a kerb and he was thrown from his bike. My children, Cate and Oliver, were 3 and 9 when that happened. Steve was out for a ride at night. I was in bed, when police came to the door to essentially wake me up to a very different life. The person who taught me about courage was my grandmother, Marjorie Stratton, who lost two of her four children — and despite those losses, she loved with great ferocity. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. I have two amazing children, and I got out of bed every day for them. Steve would be so proud of the young people Cate and Oliver have become — kind, loving, protective and respectful. But I also had the most beautiful support from my family, my mum and dad, Richard and Jenny, and my dear mother-in-law, who has since passed away. Mum and Dad sold their house in Subiaco and moved in around the corner from the kids and I in Nedlands. They’ve been close by to help with the kids and juggling my various roles. It changes shape. It never leaves you. I will miss Steve every day for the rest of my life. I had a good experience with love. Not everyone can say that. If it (love) comes to me again that would be lovely but if it doesn’t, I have a lot of love in my life with two amazing kids and friends and family. Road fatalities take me back to that knock on the door. Your life is forever changed. Behind every news story, every report of a road death, there is another family that has got that knock on the door and their lives changed forever and thrown into a whole new world that they didn’t want. That your split-second decisions — to not wear your seatbelt, to look at your phone while you are driving, and get into the car when you have one too many drinks, to drive when you are tired, to speed — those split-second decisions that you make will have an impact on your family across the generations. Social work to me is inherently political. We work with people where systems aren’t working for them, or are impacted by poverty, violence and other issues. Politics to me was a natural progression. I am incredibly grateful to Mark McGowan. I wouldn’t have won Nedlands had it not been for his leadership (during COVID) and that of Roger Cook who was Health Minister during that time. When Dr Sally Talbot announced she was retiring I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to move to the Legislative Council. My social work background means I have a broad policy interest, and I think being in the Council — if I’m elected — will be a very good fit for me. We did the extension at Shenton College. And the children’s hospice, Sandcastles. That’s something I am really proud of. Sick and dying children will go there for respite. Families will be able to stay together. I’d say, ‘If you dare, put yourself in the shoes of those parents and imagine that if you had to face the worst possible thing that any family could face, a dying child, you’d want to be in an environment that was entirely focused on you and your child’. Maintaining good quality public education, which is why I’m proud of the expansion of Shenton College and the second stage opening of Bob Hawke College. Climate change is another big concern for people in Nedlands. It’s what social workers call a wicked problem. There is no one solution. It starts at home. We have to stop our boys listening to Andrew Tate (American social media identity and misogynist). We have to teach all our kids to engage in respectful relationships and what that looks like, as well as addressing the hard end — police responses, refuges and crisis support. We need to have women’s refuges where they are needed — like in the inner city. I will wear my high heels until my feet refuse. The 18th century widow Clicquot defied tradition and the law to create what is now this delicious champagne but hers is also a story of reinvention and becoming your true self in the face of tremendous loss, or grief. Given my background, I’d love to be the minister for the prevention of family and domestic violence, women’s interests, and communities. But minister (Sabine) Winton is doing an amazing job. Genuine. Approachable. Experienced. Omnishambles.
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Victor Boniface sustained a minor injury during Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Rwanda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday, November 18. Boniface featured for 89 minutes before being replaced by Umar Sadiq. Despite his efforts, the forward struggled to make an impact, extending his goal drought for the Super Eagles in official matches. Since his national team debut in 2023, Boniface has appeared in eleven games without finding the back of the net. Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s Bundesliga match against Heidenheim, Xabi Alonso confirmed that Boniface sustained a minor injury while on international duty with the Super Eagles. However, the former midfielder of Real Madrid and Liverpool was cautious about providing a recovery timeline. “He has a small injury in his thigh muscles,” Alonso was quoted as saying by Allgemeine Zeitung. “But it won’t be for six to eight weeks. We hope that he can play again this year. We now have to wait and see how he recovers.” The injury rules Boniface out of Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash against FC Heidenheim at the BayArena on Saturday, as well as their crucial UEFA Champions League fixture against Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday. Boniface’s absence will be a significant blow to Leverkusen’s campaign, as the team is battling to retain their Bundesliga title while pushing for a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. The Nigerian forward has been a key player for Die Werkself, contributing eight goals and providing one assist in fifteen games across all competitions.
NEW YORK (AP) — Sneaking a little ahead of line to get on that plane faster? American Airlines might stop you . In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won't accept a boarding pass before the group it's assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. The initial response from customers and American employees "has exceeded our expectations," Julie Rath, American’s senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said in a statement. She added that the airline is “thrilled" to have the technology up and running ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday . American got lots of attention when it unveiled its gate-control testing last month. Analysts say that isn't surprising. It's no secret that line cutting in airports hits a nerve. Whether intentional or not, just about every air traveler has witnessed it, noted Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. It can add to frustrations in what can already be a tense environment, with particular anxiety around passengers wanting to sit together or rushing for some overhead bin space. Harteveldt doesn't see American's recent move as “shaming” customers who cut the line. “What it is intended to do is bring order out of chaos,” he said. "And I hope it will defuse any potential flare ups of anger (from) people who simply think they're entitled to board out of turn .... It’s just not fair." Harteveldt added that he thinks this change will enhance the experiences of both customers and gate agents. Others say more time will tell. Seth Miller, editor and founder of air travel experience analysis site PaxEx.aero , said he can see the benefits of more orderly and universal gate-control enforcement, particularly for airlines. But he said he isn't “100% convinced this is perfect for passengers" just yet. Families, for example, might be booked on several different reservations across more than one group, he said. Airlines typically have workarounds for that, and American noted Wednesday that customers traveling with a companion in an earlier group can simply have a gate agent “override the alert” to continue boarding. Still, Miller said, “you have to go through the extra hoops.” And a difficult customer still might choose to hold up the line and argue when they're not allowed to board, he added. Another question is whether customers who encounter a beep will walk away feeling embarrassed. But Harteveldt said he was happy to learn that American's alert is “not a bellowing sound that can be heard throughout the terminal,” or accompanied by your name read over a loudspeaker, noting that this is important to avoid feelings of shame. Expanding this technology just a week before peak Thanksgiving travel could be “both good and bad,” Harteveldt adds. On one hand, the tech could help significantly improve the boarding process during such a busy time, he said, but airport employees might also have appreciated more time to prepare. Both Miller and Harteveldt said they wouldn't be surprised if other carriers soon follow American's lead. Headaches over airport line cutting are far from new. While maybe not to the extent of American's new tech, Miller noted he's seen gate agents from other airlines ask people to leave a line and wait for their group. Harteveldt added that he's been to some airports in Asia and Europe with “sliding doors” that ensure passengers are in the right group before boarding a plane. The more than 100 airports that American is now using its gate-control technology in are all spoke, or non-hub, locations — including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline says it expects to further expand to its hubs and other airports in the coming months.France’s Michel Barnier faced an abrupt end to his premiership on Monday after key opposition parties said they would back a no-confidence motion against his government after only three months in power. Certain that the National Assembly would deny him a majority backing the government’s social security financing plan for next year, Barnier forced through the bill without a vote, using executive powers under article 49.3 of the French constitution. The conservative premier, who formed a minority government in September after an inconclusive general election, has lived under the constant threat of a no-confidence vote that could force him to quit. The government could be toppled as early as tomorrow, when a vote is expected. “I honestly believe that the French people will not forgive us if we prefer partisan interests to the best interest of the nation,” Barnier told the lawmakers. “This is a moment of truth in which everybody must take their responsibilities. I am taking mine,” he added. Far-left opposition party LFI said immediately it would bring a no-confidence motion which the far-right National Rally (RN) — the largest single party in France’s parliament — said it would vote in favour of, after accusing Barnier of failing to negotiate on some of the bill’s provisions. “We will vote no confidence,” the RN said on X. Key to any such vote is Marine Le Pen, the parliamentary leader of the RN that has opposed several parts of the government’s 2025 budget plan, including the social security financing bill submitted to the National Assembly on Monday. In a last-ditch concession to the RN, the prime minister’s office said it was scrapping plans for a less generous prescription drug reimbursement policy from next year. It was uncertain to the last moment whether the nod to Le Pen’s concerns would be enough to save the day for Barnier, who has little hope of finding any left-wing support. But in the end the “miracle” — which RN party leader Jordan Bardella said was needed to avoid the no-confidence motion — failed to materialise. LFI deputy Mathilde Panot said Barnier had sought to avoid the no-confidence vote by making “dishonourable” concessions to the RN. “On Wednesday he will get both, dishonour and the no-confidence vote,” she said, adding that the move would allow France to emerge from “a political impasse” and “political chaos”. If the government falls, it would be the first successful no-confidence vote since a defeat for Georges Pompidou’s government in 1962, when Charles de Gaulle was president. The life span of Barnier’s government would also be the shortest of any administration of France’s Fifth Republic since 1958. Le Pen had already reacted icily Sunday after Budget Minister Laurent Saint-Martin said the government did not plan any further changes to the social security budget plan. “We have taken note,” she told AFP, calling the stance “extremely closed-minded and partisan behaviour”. The RN is the largest single party in the 577-seat National Assembly, with more than 140 deputies. On Thursday, Barnier scrapped a previously planned increase on an electricity tax, in a concession to critics. Saint-Martin has highlighted that the budget proposals have already been discussed by a parliamentary commission ahead of Monday’s debate and changed following talks between National Assembly deputies and upper house senators. “To reject this text is to reject a democratic agreement,” he said. The Senate, where right-wing parties have a majority, partly approved the 2025 budget Sunday, giving a green light to government revenue projections, in a vote boycotted by the left. The Socialist party, part of the left-wing opposition, told Barnier it would vote against him if he used article 49.3 to push through a budget. Saint-Martin warned that the fall of the government would raise the risk premium on French government debt that has reached rare heights because of the country’s shaky financial situation.Stock market today: Wall Street ends little changed after giving up a big morning gain
