It’s been a long road back to the highest levels of motorsport for Canadian driver Robert Wickens. Six years after he was paralyzed in a violent wreck, Wickens will again be behind the wheel against some of the best drivers in North America. Wickens, from Guelph, Ont., was named the newest driver for DXDT Racing earlier this week, moving the 35-year-old up to IMSA GTD competition for 2025, the highest class on the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series. His promotion was made possible by a new hand control braking system created by Bosch Electronics, with help from GM Motorsports and Corvette Racing/Pratt Miller. “It’s not going to be easy but I wanted to get to the highest levels of motorsport again because, frankly, that’s where I was when I was injured,” said Wickens, who crashed at Pocono Raceway in 2018 during IndyCar’s ABC Supply 500. “But not only that, I want to prove to myself and other generations of people with disabilities that you can really do anything. “Maybe you’re having a hard time getting back to your place of work after a life-altering accident and — whatever your discipline, it doesn’t even have to be athletics — but I know it’s possible as long as you align yourself with a strong support system.” For Wickens, that’s been his wife Karli Wickens, his family and, in his professional life, organizations like Bosch and GM. Hand controls like that are acceptable for regular road vehicles and even lower levels of motorsports but in the highest classes, like IMSA GTD where cars top out at more than 280 kilometres, the lag between the driver toggling the paddle and the car responding is unacceptably slow. That’s where the Bosch electronic system comes in, with the controls linked directly to the car’s braking system, removing the pneumatics as an intermediary. “When you hit the brakes to slow the car down for each corner that was always a big challenge for me where (with) the Bosch electronic system, the latency is milliseconds not tenths of a second,” said Wickens. “It’s basically as accurate as I would be if I was an able-bodied driver wanting to apply the brake. “Honestly, it’s just better in every facet imaginable. It’s just been a true blessing.” Advances in physical rehabilitation from spinal cord injuries as well as the ongoing development of vehicle technology has made Wickens’s return to competitive motorsport possible. “I’m very fortunate in the timing of my paralysis and my career,” Wickens said Wednesday from Tampa, Fla. “If this was even a decade ago we’d be having a very different conversation today.” The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has four classes of vehicles: two sports prototype categories and two grand tourer classes. While this one is no "thin and light" phone, I've carried heavier -- much heavier -- smartphones. This is not too heavy or thick for a ruggedized smartphone. There's a lot that I like about this smartphone. Coming from an iPhone, I really appreciate the high pixel density display. Some rugged smartphones have displays that feel like everything is made of Minecraft blocks, so having a retina-quality display that runs at a fast refresh rate is a lovely touch. The cameras are also more than acceptable. I'm not sure about the 100-megapixel mode feature because it feels to me like it adds too much sharpening to the image, but the regular modes offer fantastic quality that will satisfy all but the most stringent pixel peepers. There's also an underwater camera feature if you want to take your smartphone on aquatic adventures. I really like the display on the Doogee S200. Also: The best portable power stations you can buy: Expert tested I really like the huge battery that Doogee has crammed into this smartphone. It's rated for almost 500 hours of standby -- that's a whole 20 days -- and half a day of web browsing, and my tests back this up. There's no wireless charging, which is a shame, but it does support 33W wired charging, so the handset isn't going to be attached to a cable all day. There's also a reverse charging feature that lets you use the handset like a power bank, which is a nice touch for those situations where others with smartphones that have smaller batteries are running out of power! There's no wireless charging on this handset. The speed of the handset is also a pleasant surprise, with the octa-core 6nm processor doing a good job of keeping everything humming along smoothly. The base 12GB of RAM is perfectly adequate, but I found a definite boost in the smoothness of the operating system after bumping this up to 32GB by utilizing 20GB of storage as RAM. For me, this is an acceptable trade-off. The rear AMOLED is a nice touch. I haven't forgotten about that rear display, either. It's a nice touch being able to glance at the time and date without being distracted by notifications. The AMOLED is bright enough to see in sunlight and doesn't seem to affect battery life at all. ZDNET's buying advice I really like the Doogee S200 , especially with its current $339 price tag. It's a rarity in that it's a ruggedized smartphone that is stylish enough not to look out of place in the office or at a restaurant. Don't let the looks fool you; this is a smartphone that can take a beating, has a battery that laughs in the face of an iPhone, and an array of cameras to suit the most avid of snappers. The display is excellent, unlike the usual old-school blocky type that you find on many rugged smartphones. Even though I have an iPhone as my daily driver, this display feels nice and comfortable on my eyes. Or, actually, excuse me — done it. The NBA All-Star game has officially jumped the shark. It's not even the All-Star game anymore. It'll actually be the All-Star games. According , the NBA has decided to turn the game into a quick flash pickup game format. There will be a four-team tournament between the All-Stars with two semifinal games between teams and then a final game to win the All-Star "tournament," which seems to be what they're calling it. There are more details about the format, but if I'm being honest, I don't care. I don't like this. Everything about it feels forced. This doesn't feel right, you know? This isn't how the All-Star game is supposed to go. It's not what it's supposed to look like. The NBA All-Star game means something. Or, at least, it was supposed to. It's supposed to be a celebration of the game and its top talents. However, with the players barely trying, the game has become a shell of itself in recent years. We've had moments of greatness. But, more often than not, we're getting , half-hearted shot contests and half-court 3-point bombs. It's not fun anymore. It doesn't feel special. No matter how many solutions , it doesn't mean anything if the players aren't trying. That's how we ended up here. That's why the NBA has turned the league's biggest stage into a glorified pickup game. As much as I hate it, I can't blame the league for it. The players have pushed things this far. They know it's bad. The league's There's no real workaround — the players just have to play harder. But they won't. It's just not going to happen. There's too much money involved to risk injury and we've collectively devalued the regular season so much that it simply doesn't mean what it used to mean. It's a relic. A trophy. An accolade to simply throw on a resume. Here's my suggestion: Let's just treat it like that. The All-Stars selected should be All-Stars in name only. Stop playing the game. End the weekend. Just give the players a week off and see how that goes. The All-Star game is important. But if players can't be interested enough in the game to celebrate and compete, so be it. Let's not make them. Is that a boring solution? Extremely. But it's also far less embarrassing than trying to tweak a game repeatedly to continue getting the same result. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe once the game is gone for a few years, it'll come back and a new generation of talent will be ready to make it mean something again. Until then, can we please stop messing around? The mellowing of electric-vehicle adoption hasn’t prevented General Motors from introducing several such models, specifically for the Chevrolet and Cadillac brands. In particular, Chevrolet has three available, including the Blazer EV. A fourth – the Corvette EV – is expected sometime in 2025, with others reportedly in the development stage. The scalable platform, which is used for all GM EVs, large and small, can handle front, rear or front and rear electric motors. For the midsize five-passenger Blazer EV, the prominent nose does have a type of grille, but it’s mostly for aesthetics. The rest of the bodywork shares nothing – as in zero – with the gasoline Blazer, which remains in production. Both are same length, but the EV has about a 23-centimetre advantage in distance between the front and rear wheels. That means easier rear-seat access through the generously sized doors, plus plenty of legroom. Despite the EV’s lower roofline, cargo volume is greater than the gasoline Blazer’s, with the seat upright or folded flat. There’s no storage beneath the hood – commonly called a front trunk or a frunk – for smaller items, which is frequently found in other EVs, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The interior has a 17.7-inch infotainment screen and a fashionably large 11.1-inch driver-information display. Instead of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, the Blazer EV gets Google software. Oversized air vents are positioned on either side of the dashboard and directly above the floor console. The base 300-horsepower LT lists for $57,900, including destination charges. It’s available in front- or all-wheel-drive ($61,400), has a range of 453 and 538 kms, respectively. Equipment includes the usual power features as well as heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 19-inch wheels and standard active-safety technology such as front and rear emergency braking, active cruise control and blind-spot warning. The 365-horsepower rear-wheel-drive RS ($68,400) can also go up to 538 kms on a charge, but AWD claws that back to 453. The performance-oriented AWD Blazer SS ($73,400) makes 595 horsepower and 645 pound-feet. According to Chevrolet, it can hit 60 mph (96-km/h) from rest in less than four seconds. The range is advertised as 470 kms. For every 10 minutes the Blazer EV is plugged in to a Level 3 DC fast charger, 125 kms of range will be added. With a 240-volt home charger, expect a full top-up overnight. Note that the dual-level charge cord needed for Level 2 and Level 3 use is optional. The RS and SS come with heated and ventilated front seats, heated flat-bottom steering wheel and a hands-free power liftgate. They both have exterior lighting between the grille and the hood that illuminates when the driver approaches. Exclusive to the SS is a head-up driver’s info display (projects information such as speed onto the windshield), a rear-view camera/mirror, Brembo-brand front brakes, premium-grade interior trim and unique 22-inch wheels (21-inch versions are fitted to the RS). Standard with the SS is the latest version of General Motors’ Super Cruise system that allows hands-free driving on more than 640,000 kms of roads in the United States and Canada. GM says that Super Cruise allows the Blazer to safely overtake slower-moving traffic and return to the original lane, all without driver involvement. Chevrolet also says it is creating a Police Pursuit Vehicle model based on the SS, which, given its power output, likely makes the most sense. Given its size, styling, output and variety of trim levels, the Chevrolet Blazer EV has plenty going for it. It also happens to be competitively priced, further enhanced by government rebates.
