President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by Jan. 19 while the government emphasized its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case and was written by D. John Sauer, Trump’s choice for solicitor general. The argument submitted to the court is the latest example of Trump inserting himself in national issues before he takes office. The Republican president-elect has already begun negotiating with other countries over his plans to impose tariffs, and he intervened earlier this month in a plan to fund the federal government, calling for a bipartisan plan to be rejected and sending Republicans back to the negotiating table. He has been holding meetings with foreign leaders and business officials at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida while he assembles his administration, including a meeting last week with TikTok CEO Shou Chew. Trump has reversed his position on the popular app, having tried to ban it during his first term in office over national security concerns. He joined the TikTok during his 2024 presidential campaign and his team used it to connect with younger voters, especially male voters, by pushing content that was often macho and aimed at going viral. He said earlier this year that he still believed there were national security risks with TikTok, but that he opposed banning it. The filings Friday come ahead of oral arguments on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The law was was signed by President Joe Biden in April after it passed Congress with broad bipartisan support. TikTok and ByteDance filed a legal challenge afterwards. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit , leading TikTok to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. The brief from Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.” In their brief to the Supreme Court on Friday, attorneys for TikTok and its parent company ByteDance argued the federal appeals court erred in its ruling and based its decision on “alleged ‘risks’ that China could exercise control” over TikTok’s U.S. platform by pressuring its foreign affiliates. Paluckas, the deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party (LSDP), had earlier been nominated by President Gitanas Nauseda after the LSDP won a clear victory in parliamentary elections held in October. The World Health Organisation identifies it as a key indicator of overall health, well-being and quality of life. Take this simple but all too common example – tooth decay and/or gum disease can lead to tooth loss, which can lead to chewing difficulties, poor diet and nutrition, low self-esteem, difficulty speaking and a lower quality of life. Prof Teo suggests sound solutions in which, importantly, all health professionals, government, industry and community can contribute. Good health literacy lets people access, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health – for example, through preventive care. Inter-professional collaborative health practice, implemented recently at NUS as a common curriculum among health professional students, helps with this, particularly as dental disease has common risk factors with other diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Such courses ensure that health professionals speak a common language, underpinned by evidence, that has relevance to all health disciplines and, importantly, the community and patient. It is time for us to step out of our respective disciplinary “tribes” and focus on a total patient care approach. Incentivising subsidised dental care is a great idea, and those demonstrating good preventive habits and related health outcomes could receive increased subsidisation. When I arrived in Singapore 15 months ago to join NUS’ Faculty of Dentistry as its dean, I was surprised that dental care was not a part of Healthier SG. This omission needs rectification, and as Prof Teo outlined, with encouragement on prioritising prevention over corrective treatments. The workforce to achieve this is not limited to dentists, but must include oral health therapists, the key behaviour change agents in the dental team. Let’s also consider non-dental workers, such as other health or social workers, neighbours, community centres and workplaces, to contribute to improving dental health in the community. It’s time for us to focus on making the whole greater than the sum of the parts by integrating all stakeholders into the dental team. A Republican senator has blocked the promotion of a general who oversaw the US withdrawal from Afghanistan , according to a source familiar with the matter, as President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to go after the officials involved in the withdrawal. Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma blocked the promotion of Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue to four-star general as the commander of US Army Europe-Africa. Donahue was the last US soldier on the ground in Afghanistan at the end of the withdrawal, according to the Pentagon. The night-vision picture of Donahue boarding a cargo flight out of the Kabul airport become a symbolic image of the end of a 20-year war and a chaotic withdrawal that saw the deaths of 13 US troops in a suicide bombing. Trump said he will demand the resignation of “every single senior official who touched the Afghanistan calamity.” Vice President-elect JD Vance also promised to go after those involved in the withdrawal, saying, “the people who screwed this up are going to suffer some consequences.” Donahue serves as the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. At the time of the Afghanistan withdrawal, he was a major general commanding the 82nd Airborne Division. “We are aware that there is a hold on Lt. Gen. Donahue,” Sabrina Singh, deputy Pentagon press secretary, said at a press briefing Monday. Singh said she is not aware of any other holds on promotions related to the Afghanistan withdrawal. On November 19, the Senate Armed Services Committee announced the advancement of 984 military promotions, including nominations from each of the branches of the military. But Donahue was not on the list of nominees advanced. The Pentagon announced four days earlier that he had been nominated for promotion to general. In addition to leading a storied military corps, Donahue has also been critical in the US effort to help Ukraine, helping to establish the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine.
