Staff are experiencing mental and physical issues due to being "hyperconnected" through digital technology, according to the findings. Researchers from the University of Nottingham’s Schools of Psychology and Medicine conducted detailed interviews with employees from a variety of professions. They found that the cognitive and affective effort associated with constant connectivity and high work pace driven by the digital workplace is detrimental to employee well-being. The study is the final part of a research project exploring the "dark side effects" of digital working which include stress, overload, anxiety and fear of missing out. The results, published in the journal Frontiers in Organisational Psychology , highlight an "overarching" theme of "digital workplace technology intensity" as a result of digital workplace job demands. The research team says their findings indicate a "sense of burden" associated with working digitally which surfaced for most participants in perceptions of overload and feelings of being "overwhelmed" by the proliferation of messages, apps and meetings in the digital workplace. They say "fear of missing out" - or FOMO- on important information and contact with colleagues also contributed to stress and strain for digital workers, as did hassles encountered when using digital technologies. "However, what we have found in our research is that there is a potential dark side to digital working, where employees can feel fatigue and strain due to being overburdened by the demands and intensity of the digital work environment. "A sense of pressure to be constantly connected and keeping up with messages can make it hard to psychologically detach from work." Fourteen employees were interviewed in detail and asked about their perceptions and experiences of digital workplace job demands and impacts to their health. Comments from interviewees included: “[It’s] just more difficult to leave it behind when it's all online and you can kind of jump on and do work at any time of the day or night.” Another participant said: “You kind of feel like you have to be there all the time. You have to be a little green light,” while another commented: “It's that pressure to respond [...] I've received an e-mail, I've gotta do this quickly because if not, someone might think “What is she doing from home?” In their analysis, the researchers explored potential underlying psychological, technological and organizational factors that may influence ways in which employees experience digital workplace job demands. The findings showed that participants' dark side experiences were particularly shaped by a pervasive and constant state of connectivity in the digital workplace, termed "hyperconnectivity." Those experiences contributed to a sense of pressure to be available and the erosion of work-life boundaries, according to the research team. Ange Postecoglou promised silverware in his second season just as he usually brings to a club, and while they have made a cup semi-final for the first time in three years, the Australian may need some reinforcements to go any further - not least as their last-four opponents are Liverpool . There's also a Europa League campaign to stock up for with Spurs just outside the top eight of the league table, a place in which would guarantee them safe passage to the last 16, and an FA Cup journey that begins at non-League Tamworth next week. So who might arrive and where to bolster Spurs' ranks? And will their biggest addition be the massed ranks occupying the treatment room? Here, as part of our series looking at Premier League clubs' January transfer plans, our Spurs expert Matt Barlow answers the five big questions. Cover and options from the bench, which is likely to mean creative loan deals and/or continued investment in young talent to develop in the mould of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert, rather than big money splurges to improve the first team. Beyond this, with no summer international tournament there is not the same pressure from individual players to make moves to win places in the squads. I'd expect Spurs to perform as they have in the last couple windows, looking primarily at young players and short-terms solutions with bigger investments and any potential improvements on the first team more likely to wait until the summer 2025. Daniel Levy has no great PSR concerns but the watchword regarding transfers is 'discipline' 3. Which players are they interested in? With Spurs, it's easier to talk about those who they already have on the way, having wrapped up a pair of signings that will give them a boost in 2025. Yang is an 18-year-old winger, who scored a dozen goals and won the Young Player of the Year award in South Korea's K-League last season. Tottenham signed him from Gangwon in July but agreed to let him complete the K-League season before making the switch to London in mid-December, and he will register in the New Year. Luka Vuskovic is a 17-year-old central defender signed from Hadjuk Split in 2023. Vuskovic is 6ft 4in tall and on loan in Belgium at Westerlo, for whom he has been ever-present and scored six goals. He is due to join Spurs next summer and the club's raft of emerging talent is one of the reasons they will not commit to a rash of signings of experienced players on long expensive contracts in the same positions. have seen a spectacular rally in the last few months, driven by several factors, including declining interest rates and easing inflationary pressures, which have encouraged investors to buy back into growth-oriented sectors. In addition, recent U.S. presidential election results, in which Donald Trump was re-elected, have sparked renewed discussions around trade policies and economic growth, indirectly benefiting the tech sector. While valuations of many in my portfolio have surged in recent months, I believe their potential for long-term growth remains intact. That’s why any market pullback in the coming months could be a golden opportunity for long-term investors to add more shares of such strong stocks. In this article, I’ll share two I already own and would happily buy more of if their prices dip. BlackBerry stock After struggling for over a year, ( ) seems to be attracting investors’ attention in recent months. That’s why the stock of this Waterloo-based enterprise software company has risen 16.5% over the last three months to currently trade at $3.61 per share with a of $2.1 billion. Besides the broader market rally, investors’ renewed interest in BlackBerry could be attributed to the improving performance of its cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT) segments. In the second quarter (ended in August 2024) of its fiscal year 2025, BlackBerry’s total revenue climbed by nearly 10% YoY (year over year to US$145 million due to the strong performance of its IoT and Cybersecurity divisions. IoT segment revenue grew by 12% YoY, reaching US$55 million, while cybersecurity revenue increased by 10% to US$87 million. In addition, BlackBerry’s operational efficiency showed significant improvement in the most recent quarter, helping it achieve breakeven adjusted earnings. That’s why I wouldn’t hesitate to add more shares of BlackBerry to my portfolio if its stock sees a pullback. Shopify stock While ( ) is known for its eye-popping returns that have made many investors rich, I recently bought this top tech stock for my portfolio. Despite being too late to catch its early meteoric rise, I’m not at all concerned about missing out on Shopify’s potential for long-term growth, as the growth story of this e-commerce platform giant is far from over, in my opinion. After rocketing by 69% over the last three months, Shopify stock currently trades at $160.08 per share with a market cap of $206.7 billion. Despite the ongoing macroeconomic challenges, Shopify’s sales have risen 23.5% YoY over the last 12 months to US$8.2 billion. Its recent cost-cutting measures and innovative product launches seem to be paying off as its profitability is continuing to improve. In the last four quarters combined, its adjusted earnings have risen by 150% YoY to US$1.15 per share, which continues to beat Street analysts’ expectations by a huge margin.
