LINCOLN — What was once a major event of the college football season has, in the first week of December, just become one of the subplots. Early signing day is here for Nebraska and every other program, many of which, including NU, have their attention split several ways. Conference title games haven’t even been played yet. The transfer portal — not officially open until Dec. 9 — has nevertheless been whirling with at least seven Husker departures since Monday. NU has lost one coordinator, locked another up for two years, and set its sights on Kentucky assistant Daikiel Shorts to coach receivers. Matt Rhule’s early afternoon press conference may focus just as much — perhaps more — on topics as the 2025 recruiting class, which stood Tuesday evening at 19 members. By the time Rhule talks about the class, it could grow by a few or in theory shrink, were commits inclined to balk at the departure of Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White. That hasn’t been the case so far, as some of the highest-rated prospects in the class — four-star linebackers Dawson Merritt and Christian Jones — had reaffirmed their commitment to Nebraska through social media statements. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Mills caught 79 passes for 1,640 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, breaking Miami-Dade County single-season marks. Mills’ signing ceremony takes place between 8:05-9:30 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. »Kahuka (Hawaii) High School three-star safety Aidan Manutai remains a Husker target, though he’s currently committed to California. The 6-foot, 170-pound Manutai would be part of a defensive backs group that could vie for early playing time. »Another potential prospect to watch is Kentucky receiver commit Dejerrian Miller, who verbally pledged to Shorts and the Wildcats last week and plays prep football at St. Louis Cardinal Ritter, the same school as Husker running back commit Jamarion Parker. Miller did not previously have Nebraska among his top group of suitors and may stick in the SEC. In total, NU plans to sign six in-state commitments — headlined by Jones, an Omaha Westside linebacker — to financial aid papers, as the NCAA in October eliminated the national letter of intent, which binds prospects to school. The group of six — Jones, Omaha North defensive tackle Tyson Terry, Millard North athletes Pierce Mooberry and Caden VerMaas, Wahoo Neumann running back Conor Booth and Lincoln Southwest receiver Jackson Carpenter — are part of one of the strongest corps of in-state recruits in years. Fifteen prospects are poised to sign with FBS programs, with 12 of those headed to power conferences. Unless Terry or Mills flips to NU, Merritt, out of Overland Park (Kansas) Blue Valley High School, is NU’s highest-ranked player in the 2025 class. Thirteen of the 19 prospects in the class have a four-star according to at least one of the four major recruiting services — 247 Sports, ESPN, On3 and Rivals. Candidates who took part in the May 14 election were required to notify the EC of how much they spent on campaigning between March 20 and May 15 last year. In a statement submitted to the EC, Mr Chawal -- who became a People's Party member when the Move Forward Party (MFP) was disbanded -- claimed to have spent 6,000 baht to run campaign advertisements on various social media platforms, the poll agency said. However, the EC added, an investigation found that running an ad on Facebook alone would have costed him 9,347.51 baht. Two volunteers who managed the MP's Facebook page told EC investigators they had forgotten to report some expenses to the MP before he submitted his statement. However, the MP should've double-checked the list himself before filing them with authorities, the EC said. Mr Chawal, meanwhile, said he wasn't aware of some of the finer details of the deal, which ultimately drove up the cost of running the ads. In a post on its website on Monday, the EC claimed to have enough evidence to support the allegations against Mr Chawal, who represents Constituency 3 in Chon Buri. As a result, the EC will petition the Appeals Court -- which handles cases relating to the administrative aspects of the general election -- to begin proceedings against Mr Chawal. If the court finds Mr Chawal guilty of intentionally misleading authorities by submitting an incomplete list of campaign expenses, he may face up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to 40,000 baht. Republicans in the state Legislature promised Friday to use confirmation hearings next month to sharply question Gov. Janet Mills’ nominee to represent utility ratepayers before regulators and in court cases. Heather Sanborn, the nominee for Maine Public Advocate, is a former Democratic state legislator from Portland. Rep. Reagan Paul, R-Winterport, a member of the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, said in the Republicans’ weekly radio address that members of the party plan to take advantage of the hearing to promote their energy policies that are virtually opposite the priorities of majority Democrats. She said GOP committee members will ask “fair, but tough questions” of Sanborn about offshore wind and incentives for solar developers. Public Advocate William Harwood announced earlier this month he will retire Jan. 31. He has warned of costs associated with net energy billing , a program that spells out how certain classes of solar developers are paid for the power generated by their projects. Paul and other Republicans have criticized net energy billing, calling it a costly ratepayer subsidy to out-of-state solar developers. Paul said Sanborn, when in the Legislature, voted against eliminating net energy billing. Mills welcomes a “full and fair review” by legislators of Sanborn, her office wrote in an email. “The governor remains deeply concerned about the high cost of energy and welcomes discussions during the upcoming legislative session about ways the state and region can stabilize and lower energy prices for Maine people. But what she is not interested in doing is doubling down to support the profits of fossil fuel companies that cost Maine people billions of dollars every year and harm their health and our environment.” Sanborn and Sen. French President Emmanuel Macron named a new government Monday evening, putting together a team under Francois Bayrou, his fourth prime minister of the year, to drag the second-largest EU economy out of political crisis. Macron named former prime minister Elisabeth Borne, 63, education minister in a new cabinet under centrist Bayrou. Another former premier, Manuel Valls, 62, returned as overseas territories minister, while former interior minister Gerald Darmanin became justice minister. Both Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot kept their jobs, the presidency said. Lecornu, a 38-year-old loyalist with a keen political nose, has served in every government since Macron's first election as president in 2017. Conservative Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration, and right-wing Culture Minister Rachida Dati, also stayed in their posts. The difficult job of delivering a budget plan for next year falls to Eric Lombard, the 66-year-old head of public-sector lender Caisse des Depots (CDC), who was named economy minister. "I'm very proud of the team we're presenting this evening," Bayrou said on X, adding his "experienced" government would aim to "rebuild trust". Tenant advocates suffered a big defeat this fall when California voters decided against expanding cities’ ability to limit rent increases. But a state law set to take effect Jan. 1 will give renters facing eviction a little more breathing room. The law doubles the time tenants have to respond after receiving an eviction notice from five business days to ten. Lawyers who work with renters say that what may seem like a minor procedural change could make a big difference in allowing people to stay in their homes. Tenants who are served an eviction notice and don’t respond in writing within the legal timeframe can lose their case by default, potentially incurring financial penalties and a black mark on their record that affects their future ability to obtain housing. That’s true even if a tenant has a valid legal defense – for example, if their landlord increased the rent above state limits or refused to fix problems like lack of heat or broken door locks. About 40% of California tenants lose their cases this way, researchers have estimated . “Five days has never been enough for a tenant to find legal assistance and try to decipher the complaint filed against them, find out what kind of defenses they have, fill out the paperwork and make it to court,” Lorraine López, a senior attorney with the Western Center on Law and Poverty, told CalMatters earlier this fall. Access to legal services varies widely across California .
