NASSAU, Bahamas — Scottie Scheffler birdied every hole but the par 3s on the front nine at Albany Golf Club on Friday and finished his bogey-free round with an 8-under 64 that gave him a two-shot lead in the Hero World Challenge. Two months off did nothing to slow the world's No. 1 player. Scheffler already has eight victories this year and is in position to get another before the end of the year. Scheffler was at 13-under 131, two ahead of Akshay Bhatia (66) and Justin Thomas (67), both of whom had to save par on the 18th hole to stay in range going into the weekend. Scheffler started with a lob wedge to 2 feet for birdie and never slowed until after he went out in 29 to seize control of the holiday tournament against a 20-man field. Scheffler cooled slightly on the back nine, except it didn't feel that way to him. "Front nine, just things were going my way. Back nine, maybe not as much," Scheffler said. "A couple shots could end up closer to the hole, a couple putts go in, just little things." Asked if he felt any frustration he didn't take it lower — he once shot 59 at the TPC Boston during the FedEx Cup playoffs — Scheffler sounded bemused. "I think in this game I think a lot of all y'all are looking for perfection out of us," he said. "Today I shot 8 under on the golf course, not something I hang my head about. A lot of good things out there — clean card, bogey-free, eight birdies. Overall, I think I'm pretty pleased." Thomas felt his 67 was stress-free, particularly the way he was driving the ball. The wind laid down again, rare for the Bahamas, though it is expected to pick up on the weekend. Thomas wasn't concerned to see Scheffler get off to a hot start, especially with three par 5s on the front nine and a short par 4 that at worst leaves a flip wedge to the green. "You literally can birdie every hole as soft as the greens are," Thomas said. "He's a great player, a great wedge player, and you have a lot of birdie holes to start. I'm honestly surprised he only shot 8 under. It's a sneaky course because if you fall asleep on some shots, you can get out of position. But if you're on and focused and really in control of everything — like these last two days with no wind — you can just make so many birdies." On the X social media platform, the claim was included in a post made with Ukraine’s seeking of aid from Western countries in mind. “This is insane. NO more money to Zelensky!” the post said. A French-language news website was the first to report the claim. It was based on a video clip on Instagram in which a man said he worked at a car dealership and assisted Zelenska with the purchase. Many Russian media outlets quoted the allegation, and pro-Russia influencers based in Western countries reposted it on their social media accounts, thus helping spread the claim. The Ukrainian government’s Center for Countering Disinformation immediately warned that it was a false story created by Russia, and that people should be wary. The center said it was highly likely the video clip was a sophisticated deep fake made with AI. The receipt shown in the photo was also a fake. The news site that first reported the story was created just nine days before it carried the claim. False reports that Zelenskyy and his wife have bought expensive goods have repeatedly appeared in Western countries. Aid from various nations is essential to put Ukraine in a favorable war situation. Russia’s aim is to create negative public opinion about Ukraine in Western countries, decrease aid to the country and deepen its hardships. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian center, used the term “media clones” to describe sites that pretend to be local media and transmit fake information. Such fake stories are disseminated to lessen trust in Zelenskyy, stir anxiety among the Ukrainian people about their possible mobilization to the front lines and sap the will to fight among soldiers and the public. "Even though he's a crazy serial killer, there's a real affection for the character - people love Mick Taylor. It's really weird," he says. In his latest offering, , the murder is implied but McLean's love for the land and its people remains clear. The setting may be thousands of kilometres away on a remote Northern Territory cattle farm, but the characters and backgrounds come directly from his own childhood growing up on a farm in Emu Creek on the outskirts of Bendigo. As a child, McLean attended Eppalock Primary School with about 25 other students, before starting high school at Catherine McCauley. At the end of the first episode of , when cattle baron Colin Lawson looks down at a picture of his father, it's not an actor in an artificially aged photograph, but a real photo of McLean's father as a young jackaroo in the 1940s. "It's meant to be Colin looking at his dad... but that's kind of my own story of growing up with a dad who was from the land." There's a bit of his uncles and cousins in all the characters in , he says, and a lot of his childhood in everything he does. In spite of any head start he may have had from his upbringing, McLean describes the beginning of filming in the Northern Territory as a comedy of errors. "You can imagine the contrast between a bunch of film crew from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide rocking up in their floral shirts and loafers to the Northern Territory and going 200 kilometres south to the middle of the desert to a cattle station. There was a lot of amused looks." Filming began at the end of 2023 at Tipperary Station and Hawk Dreaming (most of the interior shots were filmed later in South Australia) when the temperature was starting to edge towards 40 degrees. McLean described production meetings held in sweltering temperatures with the film crew at one end of the table - at the other, a group of hardened cattlemen there to help them shuffle vast herds of animals into frame. "I'm there with the storyboard saying, 'in this scene in the script, 3000 cattle come over this rise and this actor rides behind and then a bull breaks off to the left, and he chases that one and then a chopper comes down'." "They're just looking at us like, 'what the hell are you talking about?'" By the end of filming, however, McLean says production was a well-oiled machine, recalling one cattleman sitting beside him on the video split and giving acting notes. Those same cattlemen would later join McLean and the rest of the crew at the Darwin premiere of the show. "It was so satisfying to see those people see themselves on screen, see their lifestyle represented. "They love seeing the NT shown in such a spectacular way because it's their home." "To be able to capture that with this crew was pretty special." A second season will depend on but with its track record of reaching the top 10 in 74 countries and number two globally for English TV shows, McLean is hopeful. "I don't know if it could go any better than it is," he says. With so much of appeal - to both international and domestic fans - being the harshness of the land it's filmed on, he's also in talks with Netflix about a documentary showcasing the "military-scale exercise" needed to tackle it. "You can't go in there and impose your will on it, because the sun will do what the sun's going to do, the clouds are going to do what the clouds will do, the rains, storms, flooding, animals," he says. "Thinking back on it now, you kind of think, 'oh my god, how the hell did we actually do that?'" "At the time, you kind of get blasé - all you're doing is trying to get your shots done." Tech billionaire Elon Musk spent at least $270 million to help Donald Trump win the US presidency, according to new federal filings, making him the country's biggest political donor. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Musk, the world's richest person, was an ardent supporter of Trump's White House campaign -- funneling money into door knocking operations and speaking at his rallies. His financial backing, which has earned him a cost-cutting advisory role in Trump's incoming government, surpassed spending by any single political donor since at least 2010, according to data from nonprofit OpenSecrets. The Washington Post reported that Musk spent more this election cycle than Trump backer Tim Mellon, who gave nearly $200 million and was previously the Republican's top donor. Musk donated $238 million to America PAC, a political action committee that he founded to support Trump, filings late Thursday with the Federal Election Commission showed. An additional $20 million went to the RBG PAC, a group that used advertising to soften Trump's hardline reputation on the key voter issue of abortion. Musk has been an ever-present sidekick for Trump since his election victory in November, inviting him to watch a rocket launch in Texas by his SpaceX company. Trump has selected the South African-born tycoon and fellow ally Vivek Ramaswamy to head the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, through which the pair have promised to deliver billions of dollars of cuts in federal spending. However, with Musk's businesses all having varying degrees of interactions with US and foreign governments, his new position also raises concerns about conflict of interest. Former shock jock, ruthless powerbroker and alleged sexual predator Alan Jones has been pretty much untouchable for decades. Earlier this week, Jones was arrested on 26 offences of aggravated indecent assault and inappropriate touching. At the time of publication, the charges committed against nine alleged victims included 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault, 11 counts of assault with acts of indecency, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault. Jones was released on bail. His lawyer, Chris Murphy , said that Jones “denies any misconduct” and intends to “assert his innocence appropriately in the courtroom” . This is not the first time Jones has been accused of sexual misconduct or had unsavoury spats with the law. In 1975, he was ‘persuaded to resign as teacher’ at Sydney’s exclusive The King’s School for boys after it was alleged Jones had a 'bad, very bad' influence over and inappropriate relationships with some of his students. Then there was the London incident in 1988 when Jones was arrested at an underground public toilet and charged with " outraging public decency" and "committing an indecent act". Those charges were later dropped. Alan Jones' 1988 arrest, as reported in the Daily Mirror Jones’ chequered record also includes the time he incited the Cronulla race riots in 2005, for which he was fined . In that particular escapade, among other choice expressions of racial hatred, Jones used his radio program to read out a text message encouraging people to: “Come to Cronulla this weekend to take revenge... get down to North Cronulla to support the Leb and wog bashing day." Then there was the time the Australian Broadcasting Authority found that Jones had engaged in “cash for comment”, misleading listeners by presenting paid endorsements as editorial opinion. There were also many verdicts against him and 2GB in defamation actions, including one in 2018 , in which the judge found his behaviour 'vicious and spiteful' and ordered Jones and 2GB to pay over $3 million in compensation. Indeed, for this "service to the media", Jones even received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) award. His Liberal Party pedigree includes writing speeches for former PM Malcolm Fraser , several (failed) election bids and the appointment of a dedicated trouble-shooter known as “the Minister for Alan Jones” during former PM John Howard ’s reign. Apart from Fraser and Howard, Jones has counted among his high-profile friends former PMs Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison , and billionaire mining magnate and Liberal Party buddy Gina Rinehart . Following Jones’ arrest on Monday, billionaire James Packer said : “Alan is a dear, dear friend who I love and it’s a pleasure to support him.” Alan Jones and Andrew Tate: The cancel culture mates This week in Romania, infamous misogynist Andrew Tate lost his appeal to end his detention there and, closer to home, Alan Jones is having a garage sale. Now that he no longer wields power on the airwaves, his other high-profile friends have not rushed to gush about their association with Jones, with most – including Abbott and Rinehart – declining to comment. Interestingly, his name no longer appears on any of Ms Rinehart’s websites. The charge of aggravated indecent assault, which he now faces, carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment for each alleged offence and is the most serious on Jones’ rap sheet. Nonetheless, Alan Jones is still a rich white man of influence, propped up and insulated by a solid network of prominent power brokers — and arrest is not synonymous with conviction.
