There’s precious little agreement between congressional Republicans and Democrats these days. So it’s unusual that the president this week vetoed a bill that garnered bipartisan support in both houses. The explanation, not surprisingly, rests in pure partisanship and the progressive thirst for political power. On Monday, President Joe Biden vetoed the JUDGES Act, which would have added 66 new judges to the federal courts. The move was an effort to speed up justice by addressing backlogs in the federal courts. The bill had unanimously sailed through the Senate in August before passing the House 236-173 last week. Supporters of the reform point out that there has been no increase in the number of federal appeals court judgeships in four decades. The federal district courts haven’t added judgeships since 2003. Yet caseloads have increased about 20 percent in both courts over the past two decades. The expansion proposal was embraced by a wide range of judicial organizations, and Mr. Biden’s veto was met with criticism from across the political spectrum. “The communities affected and their current judges deserved this bipartisan solution to the caseload crisis,” noted the Federal Bar Association. “The FBA urges continued work on this issue when the new Congress convenes in January.” Mr. Biden’s veto explanation argued that the bill was too hastily assembled. That’s balderdash. In reality, the president and some House Democrats are unhappy with the November election results and don’t want leave the appointment of additional federal judges to Donald Trump. Yet the legislation was structured to spread the creation of the new seats across the next three administrations, precisely to avoid partisan battles. Clearly Mr. Biden — or whoever is making decisions at the White House these days — isn’t bullish on his party’s chances in the 2028 and 2032 elections. “The president’s veto will contribute to the pattern of growing caseloads and increasing backlogs that hurt litigants and weakens public confidence in our courts,” said a statement from Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr., director of the administrative office of the U.S. courts. Mr. Biden leaves office having made a slew of unfortunate decisions that make clear he places more emphasis on protecting his own family members and kowtowing to the radical left than on ensuring the federal judicial system delivers justice in an efficient and timely manner for all those involved. When Republicans gain control of the Senate in January, they should resuscitate the JUDGES Act and send it to the White House for Mr. Trump’s signature. Is NVIDIA’s Future at Risk? Police had to use pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game. Ohio State police said in a statement “multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.” Ohio State police will investigate the fight, according to the statement. After the Ohio State players confronted their bitter rivals at midfield, defensive end Jack Sawyer grabbed the top of the Wolverines' flag and ripped it off the pole as the brawl moved toward the Michigan bench. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren't going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn't like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines' postgame celebration. He called it “classless.” “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game," he said in an on-field interview with Fox Sports. “It’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, you know some people got to — they got to learn how to lose, man. ... We had 60 minutes, we had four quarters, to do all that fighting.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said everybody needs to do better. “So much emotions on both sides," he said. "Rivalry games get heated, especially this one. It’s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that better.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. The service expansion, commencing early in the year, will deliver considerable benefits to the residents. The extension includes five new stations, linking IIT to Kanpur Central, alongside the city's first underground metro tunnel. Officials expect to complete the IIT to Naubasta corridor by year-end while beginning work on the second corridor. Currently, the 24 km Corridor-1 (IIT-Naubasta) provides passenger services on a 9km elevated route from IIT to Motijheel. The extension will facilitate travel between IIT and Central Station. Kanpur Metro officials indicate that regular testing from IIT to Kanpur Central will begin soon. Final station work continues. The 8.60 km Corridor-2 (CSA-Barra 8) construction progresses steadily, including stations at CSA, Rawatpur, Devki Chauraha, Double Pulia, Vijay Nagar, and Barra Eight. In another achievement for the city the IIT-Kanpur completed its Phase-1 campus placements for the 2024-25 batch between December 1 and 15 resulting in 1,109 offers across various sectors. Of these students accepted 1,035 positions. International placements have increased by 27% with 28 offers. Over 250 organisations participated in the session, including prominent companies across technology, banking, and industrial sectors. Likewise, CSJMU has received UGC's Category 1 status, complementing its NAAC A+ grade. This classification grants significant autonomy under UGC Regulations 2018, allowing independent programme launches. This achievement places CSJMU amongst India's top 10% educational institutions, making it Uttar Pradesh's second university after Lucknow University to receive this status, confirmed during UGC's February 13 meeting. In the same vein, IIT-K's ‘Analakshya MSCS' represents advancement in stealth technology, supporting defence manufacturing independence. The system demonstrates superior wave absorption across frequencies, strengthening defences against radar systems and guided missiles, particularly relevant given recent security challenges. The Ground Breaking Ceremony @ 4.0 witnessed 243 industrial units invest approximately Rs 20,000 crores. A new private industrial park plans to create 250,000 jobs. The Smart City convention centre at Chunniganj approaches completion, representing a Rs 96.10 crore investment. The facility includes modern amenities and spaces for various activities. Kanpur Development Authority's 2025 plan introduces two residential schemes offering 2000 plots. New Kanpur City provides 1,750 plots across 153 hectares, whilst New Aero City features 250 plots within 1,200 acres. In terms of political developments, the Samajwadi Party faced a significant challenge when their MLA Irfan Solanki was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for his role in a fire-related incident in Kanpur's Jajmau area. However, the party managed to recover from this setback towards the year's conclusion by successfully nominating Irfan's spouse in the bypoll, who emerged triumphant in the electoral contest. Tragically, the city mourned losses in 2024, including Professor Kanwar Singh Nalwa, 39, of IIT-K, who suffered cardiac arrest during a Leh trek. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Article content SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to implement the “toughest” anti-U.S. policy, state media reported Sunday, less than a month before Donald Trump takes office as U.S. president. Trump’s return to the White House raises prospects for high-profile diplomacy with North Korea. During his first term, Trump met Kim three times for talks on the North’s nuclear program. Many experts however say a quick resumption of Kim-Trump summitry is unlikely as Trump would first focus on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. North Korea’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine also poses a challenge to efforts to revive diplomacy, experts say. During a five-day plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party that ended Friday, Kim called the U.S. “the most reactionary state that regards anti-communism as its invariable state policy.” Kim said that the U.S.-South Korea-Japan security partnership is expanding into “a nuclear military bloc for aggression.” “This reality clearly shows to which direction we should advance and what we should do and how,” Kim said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. It said Kim’s speech “clarified the strategy for the toughest anti-U.S. counteraction to be launched aggressively” by North Korea for its long-term national interests and security. KCNA didn’t elaborate on the anti-U.S. strategy. But it said Kim set forth tasks to bolster military capability through defence technology advancements and stressed the need to improve the mental toughness of North Korean soldiers. The previous meetings between Trump and Kim had not only put an end to their exchanges of fiery rhetoric and threats of destruction, but they developed personal connections. Trump once famously said he and Kim “fell in love.” But their talks eventually collapsed in 2019, as they wrangled over U.S.-led sanctions on the North. North Korea has since sharply increased the pace of its weapons testing activities to build more reliable nuclear missiles targeting the U.S. and its allies. The U.S. and South Korea have responded by expanding their military bilateral drills and also trilateral ones involving Japan, drawing strong rebukes from the North, which views such U.S.-led exercises as invasion rehearsals. Further complicating efforts to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons in return for economic and political benefits is its deepening military cooperation with Russia. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops and conventional weapons systems to support Moscow’s war against Ukraine. There are concerns that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in Russia’s Kursk region. It was the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties since the North Korean troop deployment to Russia began in October. Russia and China, locked in separate disputes with the U.S., have repeatedly blocked U.S.-led pushes to levy more UN sanctions on North Korea despite its repeated missile tests in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions. Last month, Kim said that his past negotiations with the United States only confirmed Washington’s “unchangeable” hostility toward his country and described his nuclear buildup as the only way to counter external threats.Michigan hosts Northwestern, needing a win to be bowl eligible
Hyaluronic Acid Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report Forecast Period (2024-2031).One thing nearly all former presidents have in common is a love of sports. For Donald Trump, the game was golf. For Barack Obama, the sport was basketball. President George W. Bush owned Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers. For Jimmy Carter, the sport was tennis. At the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park is a clay tennis court. The tennis court was installed during Carter’s childhood on the family farm. The farm and his childhood home later became the location for the park in Plains, Georgia. In his 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” Carter described how he would play against his father as a teenager. “My father ... was an excellent tennis player,” Carter wrote. “I could never beat my father. He had a wicked sliced ball which barely bounded at all on the relatively soft dirt court.” RELATED STORY | Former President Jimmy Carter dies at age 100 Carter was able to upgrade his court when he entered the White House in 1977. The complex had a court installed during President Theodore Roosevelt’s tenure. But during his time in the White House, the use of the tennis courts became political fodder. Staffer James Fallows wrote in The Atlantic that Carter would personally sign off on when the White House tennis court could be used, and by which staffers. “The in-house tennis enthusiasts, of whom I was perhaps the most shameless, dispatched brief notes through his secretary asking to use the court on Tuesday afternoons while he was at a congressional briefing, or a Saturday morning, while he was away,” Fallows wrote. “I always provided spaces where he could check Yes or No; Carter would make his decision and send the note back, initialed J.” Carter was asked by Bill Moyers about whether he personally signed off on the tennis court’s use. Carter told Moyers he delegated the task to a secretary. Carter’s love of tennis came home to Plains in 1977 during his first year in the White House. World Team Tennis staged a match in the small Georgia town, which was attended by Carter’s mother Lillian. The competition was between a team of Soviet Union stars against top Americans playing on the Phoenix Racquets.Top 10 movies of 2024: In a time of scoundrels, ‘Brutalist,’ ‘Challengers’ and the movie about the exotic dancer
