PITTSBURGH – All seven of Pitt's starters were named to the all-Atlantic Coast Conference teams. This is the second consecutive season seven Panthers were recognized as all-ACC performers. Dan Fisher was named the 2024 ACC coach of the year after leading Pitt to a 29-1 overall record and 19-1 ACC finish. This marks Fisher's third career ACC coach of the year award. The Panthers earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time and won its sixth ACC championship. Olivia Babcock was named the 2024 ACC player of the year after earning ACC freshman of the year honors in 2023. Babcock is the second Panther in program history to receive the prestigious award and first to win it since Kayla Lund (2019, 2020). She leads the Pitt offense and averages 5.87 points per set and has won two AVCA national player of the week and three ACC offensive player of the week awards this season. Babcock also saw her name on the all-ACC first team for the second straight season and is an AVCA national player of the year semifinalist. Rachel Fairbanks was named to the ACC first team for the second consecutive season and is averaging a career-best 10.33 assist per set, good for fifth in program history. She is setting Pitt to a nation's best .341 team hitting percentage. She averages 2.22 digs per set. The 2023 ACC setter of the year and AVCA national player of the year semifinalist currently has 2,886 career assists to her name along with 742 digs and 276 kills. Torrey Stafford has enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign. The 2024 ACC first-team selection is an AVCA player of the year semifinalist and currently leads in the nation in hitting percentage for all Power Four outside hitters at .377. Stafford contributes 3.76 kills and 2.24 digs per set as a six-rotation player. Bre Kelley has impressed this season after suffering a season-ending injury in 2023. She was named to the ACC first team for the first time in her career and is currently third in the conference with 1.53 blocks per set and is hitting a blistering .514. She earned the ACC defensive player of the week award (Oct. 21) after averaging 2.0 blocks and 1.67 kills per set, hitting .450 in two sweeps over California and Stanford. Valeria Vazquez Gomez has contributed in every area of her game in her sixth season. She earned ACC second-team honors and averages 2.1 kills and 1.98 digs per set. She recently became the newest Panther in the 1,000 kill and 1,000 dig club. Vazquez Gomez is hitting an efficient .251 for the year and has captained the Panthers, alongside Fairbanks, to its sixth ACC championship. Emmy Klika is a steady presence in both defense and serve-receive in her final season as a Panther. The two-time ACC second-team player is widely regarded as one of the best passers in the nation and helps Pitt hold opponents to a nation's best .122 hitting percentage. Ryla Jones was named to the all-ACC freshman team. She was named the ACC freshman of the week (Sept. 23) after notching 18 kills and not committing a single error en route to a .692 hitting percentage with wins over Penn State, East Carolina and Marquette. Jones averages over 1.0 block and 1.0 kill per set in Pitt's commanding offense and defense. (c)2024 The Tribune-Democrat (Johnstown, Pa.) CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Chase Artopoeus threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead Chattanooga to a 24-17 victory over Austin Peay in a nonconference regular-season finale on Saturday. Chattanooga (7-5) jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead on Jude Kelley's 28-yard field goal and Artopoeus' 9-yard touchdown toss to Javin Whatley with 42 seconds left. The score came five plays after Alex Mitchell intercepted a pass from Austin Smith, giving the Mocs the ball at the Governors' 26-yard line. Austin Peay answered in the second quarter with help from a Chattanooga turnover. Ellis Ellis Jr. picked off Artopoeus and the Governors took over at the Mocs' 30. Smith completed three straight passes — the last one covering 4 yards to Jaden Barnes to get Austin Peay within three points. Carson Smith followed with a 35-yard field goal to tie it at 10. Chattanooga regained the lead with 4:01 left in the third quarter when Artopoeus capped a nine-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Smith had a 23-yard touchdown run to get Austin Peay within seven with 8:08 left in the game. The Governors drove to the Mocs' 30, but Smith's fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 41 seconds to go. Artopoeus completed 15 of 21 passes for 161 yards for Chattanooga. He had a 7-yard scoring toss to John McIntyre to put the Mocs up 24-10 early in the final quarter. Smith finished with 192 yards on 21-for-36 passing for Austin Peay, which finishes its first season under head coach Jeff Faris with a 4-8 record. Rusty Wright became the first Chattanooga coach to finish .500 or better in each of his first six seasons. Chattanooga snapped Austin Peay's nine-game win streak with a 24-21 victory on the road to close out the regular season last year. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. The newspaper quoted four sources familiar with the transition plans. Grenell served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and was acting director of national intelligence during his first four years in office between 2017-2021. He would play a key role in the President-elect’s efforts to stop the war if he is ultimately selected for the post. Trump is said to be considering dedicating a special envoy to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The US President-elect could ultimately decide not to create a special envoy for the conflict in Ukraine, although he is strongly considering doing so, the sources said. If he does, he could ultimately select someone else for the role, and there is no guarantee Grenell would accept. Trump vowed on the campaign trail to swiftly end the conflict, although he has not said how he will do it. Budget 2025: The electronics industry has sought a reduction in import duty in the upcoming budget on key components used to manufacture mobile mobiles, such as inductor coils, mic and printed circuit board (PCBA). ET Year-end Special Reads Two sectors that rose on India's business horizon in 2024 2025 outlook: Is it time for cautious optimism or rekindling animal spirits? 2024: Govt moves ahead with simultaneous polls plan; India holds largest democratic exercise The industry has also sought subsidies for mandatory testing and certification of products, extension of the 15% corporate tax waiver for manufacturing companies, a technology acquisition fund and dedicated manufacturing clusters for components. Phone makers have pitched for a cut in the duty on mic, receiver, speaker and flexible printed circuit assembly to 10% from 15% now. They have also asked for duty-free imports of parts of printed circuit board assembly, which are subject to 2.5% duty at present. This is crucial as India's effective tariffs on mobile phone inputs still range from 7% to 7.2%, which is significantly higher than China and Vietnam, they said. The industry raised these issues at a pre-budget meeting with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday. Industry has sought concessions on those parts as there is no duty on some of these components in China," said an official. Pushing for a simplified tariff structure, the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has suggested duty-free import of inputs and sub-parts of sub-assemblies/components, 5% duty for certain component parts and 10% tariff for sub-assemblies and components. The Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) said the government should consider providing financial incentives or establish subsidised testing and certification facilities, specifically for MSME companies, along with increasing testing capacity. It asked to extend the 15% corporate tax waiver for manufacturing companies till March 31, 2029 to encourage establishment of new manufacturing ventures in the component sector. This should be combined with a dedicated incentive package to build the component ecosystem in dedicated clusters, ELCINA said. India's domestic smartphone market stagnated in 2024, with shipments flat for the second consecutive year at approximately 152 million units, as reported by Counterpoint Research and IDC. "A modest 1-2% growth during the festive season was insufficient to offset the decline in demand for sub-$100 devices, whose share fell from 30% in 2023 to under 20% in 2024," ICEA said in a representation to chief economic advisor V Anantha Nageswaran. Duty cuts on key components would be crucial for India to benefit from the tariff changes as US president-elect Donald Trump has proposed tariffs as high as 60% on Chinese imports. Trump began a trade war with China in 2018 during his first term as US president. Nominations for ET MSME Awards are now open. The last day to apply is December 31, 2024. has ignored a formal reminder from the Football Association by again wearing a captain’s armband with a religious message written on it. Rainbow-coloured captain armbands were issued to the 20 clubs for matches last weekend and the upcoming midweek round in a show of support for the + community. Guehi, a devout Christian, wore the armband against Newcastle with the added handwritten words of “I love Jesus”, while Ipswich captain Sam Morsy, a practising Muslim, chose not to wear the armband due to his religious beliefs. While the deem Morsy’s decision a club matter, reminding them that religious messaging is banned from equipment used or worn in Premier League matches under Rule A4 of the governing body's regulations. Rule A4 in full states: "The appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots or other equipment of any distasteful, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting, discriminatory or otherwise ethically or morally offensive message, or any political or religious message, is prohibited. The advertising of tobacco products is prohibited." Guehi was back in action for Palace on Tuesday night and has repeated the act despite contact from the FA. Against Ipswich, Guehi’s armband read: “Jesus [heart emoji] You.” Morsy, the Ipswich skipper, again opted against wearing the armband. Marc Guéhi on instagram. — Dom Smith (@MrDomSmith) After the game, which Palace won, Guehi took to Instagram to repeat the message. Posting on his Instagram Story, he wrote: “Jesus [loves] you. Stay blessed.”Manchester City plunged deeper into trouble in the Champions League by losing 2-0 at Juventus on Wednesday, the latest setback in a scarcely believable run of poor results for the ailing English champions. City dropped to 22nd place in the 36-team standings, with only the top 24 advancing. Progressing to the next round of the new-look format looked a certainty before the season for a team that was European champion in 2023 and has won the last four Premier League titles. But not anymore as City manager Pep Guardiola battles injuries and an apparent loss of belief among his players. City has won just one of its last 10 matches in all competitions, with goals by Dušan Vlahović and Weston McKennie inflicting the latest defeat and igniting Juventus' qualification hopes. City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan described the team's problem as a “mental issue.” Opponents “are able to break our rhythm with the smallest of things,” Gundogan said. "They don’t even need to do much and it has such a big effect on us right now.” Barcelona jumped into second place in the league standings, behind Liverpool, and is guaranteed to advance after a 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund. Raphinha and Ferran Torres, with two goals, scored for Barca. Arsenal beat Monaco 3-0 mainly thanks to two goals by Bukayo Saka to move into third place and be the highest of six teams on 13 points. The top eight qualify directly for the last 16 and the teams placed No. 9-24 go into a two-legged playoff. Danger for City City has two games to save its faltering Champions League campaign and the first is against Paris Saint-Germain, another giant in trouble in 25th place — one spot out of the qualifying positions. Vlahović put Juventus ahead in the 53rd when he powered a header goalward straight at City goalkeeper Ederson, who could only parry the ball over his own line. Two American substitutes sealed the win for Juve, with McKennie volleying home from Timothy Weah's cross. Juventus moved into 14th place. Super-sub Torres Ferran Torres came off the bench to inspire Barcelona to a fifth win in six games and push Dortmund, last season's runner-up, out of the top eight. Torres came on in the 71st to replace Robert Lewandowski, who had a quiet game against his former club. Just four minutes later, Torres scored a goal on the rebound from Dani Olmo’s shot. Serhou Guirassy’s second goal of the game leveled the score at 2-2 but Torres scored again in the 85th off Lamine Yamal’s pass on the counter. Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead before Guirassy equalized from the penalty spot. Raphinha and Guirassy are tied for second place in the scoring chart on six goals, behind Lewandowski's competition-high seven. Home comforts for Arsenal Arsenal secured a third straight home win without conceding in the league stage, with Saka scoring in the 34th and 78th minutes and sending in a shot that was turned into the net by substitute Kai Havertz in the 88th. Arsenal is ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Inter Milan, Brest and Lille on goal difference. Lille won 3-2 at home to Sturm Graz on Wednesday. In-form Alvarez Man City could sure do with Julian Alvarez at the moment. With a brilliant curling finish to open the scoring, the Argentina striker helped Atletico Madrid beat Slovan Bratislava 3-1 and provide a timely reminder of what City is missing after selling him for more than $100 million in August. Alvarez has 12 goals for the season, with four coming in the Champions League. Antoine Griezmann scored Atletico’s other two goals at Metropolitano stadium as the Spanish team climbed to 11th place after a 10th straight win in all competitions. Tribute to grieving teammate When Lukasz Lakomy gave Young Boys the lead against Stuttgart, he ran toward the sideline and held up teammate Meschack Elia’s jersey as others gathered around him. The gesture was a tribute after Elia’s son died unexpectedly this week after a short illness. Elia wasn’t playing as he was on his way to his native Congo, where his son died, to be with his family. Both teams wore black armbands and there was a moment of silence before the game, which was won 5-1 by Stuttgart. Late winner Tammy Abraham scored an 87th-minute winner as AC Milan beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 to move one point off the top eight. Milan lost Alvaro Morata and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to muscle injuries in the first half. Benfica’s five-match winning streak ended with a 0-0 home draw against Bologna, and Feyenoord had a 4-2 win over Sparta Prague. ___ Steve Douglas is at https://twitter.com/sdouglas80 ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer Steve Douglas, The Associated Press
