Don Gilet joins the team as DI Mervin Wilson, with Marcus Brigstocke, Jim Howick, Dex Lee, Elizabeth Carling and Angela Griffin RT says:: Such is the popularity of Death in Paradise that the prospect of a new detective inspector arriving on Saint Marie is now met with almost Doctor Who levels of anticipation. So, what to make of Don Gilet as the latest series lead, Mervin Wilson? Well, the first thing to note is that he’s refreshingly free of oddball quirks, his key idiosyncrasies being a bucket hat and an irritated air. But to be fair to him, he does have a point about his team being under-resourced, as there are so many murders on this island, you’d expect the police force to be staffed like CSI. Yet this annoyance does tend to alienate those around him, with Darlene giving Mervin the nickname “DI Fancy Pants” and Catherine labelling him “rude”. For viewers, though, the lively Gilet is undeniably fun to watch and his debut case suitably tricksy, involving as it does three Santas shot at the same time with a single firearm. The result is a satisfying, twist-filled slay ride. This documentary follows co-creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith as they prepare to film the show’s finale, Plodding On , which aired earlier this year. The two friends have known each other since they met at college and have been making Inside No 9 for ten years, so emotions are mixed. “I feel like I’m sick of being asked how I feel,” to quote a tired Pemberton. For fans, the interesting stuff is being taken through the duo’s creative process. There are notebooks of scribbled ideas; sessions of silence to work out twists; and a running joke where whoever arrives at the office first pretends to be dead. STEPHEN KELLY How to watch My Epic Camel Adventure with Gordon Buchanan 2024 Documentary and factual Science and technology Summary: The wildlife cameraman takes a ride through the Gobi desert, starting in the west of Mongolia and crossing blistering sand dunes, endless rocky plains and the treacherous Bumbat Mountain with only his camels for company. At least he would if he could make Squeaks and Chewy, as he names them, move when asked. He’s thrilled to see wildlife, especially the elusive Gobi bears that he catches on his camera trap. JANE RACKHAM How to watch A Christmas Carol: The Read with Anne-Marie Duff Arts and culture Summary: Anne-Marie Duff takes audiences on a spirited journey through Victorian London with Charles Dickens' timeless seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol. The actress brings to life the miserly Scrooge, as he's visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come RT says:: Dickens’s covetous sinner Scrooge is brought to life by Anne-Marie Duff, who sits in a candlelit office of dark wood and thick ledgers for a carefully abridged retelling of this classic story. The writer’s conversational but vivid style suits the set-up, and Duff is in her element as she gives voice to the admonitions of Jacob Marley and the bonhomie of Fezziwig, the only accompaniment to her words being the odd silhouette at windows fringed with snow. Higher budget versions of this tale will no doubt be watched over the days ahead, but the power of the original text and the message it conveys remain priceless. DAVID BROWN How to watch

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said that federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless. That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. Among the most concerning trends was a nearly 40% rise in family homelessness. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. Azerbaijani and U.S. officials suggest plane that crashed may have been hit by weapons fire U.S. and Azerbaijani officials have said weapons fire may have brought down an Azerbaijani airliner that crashed on Wednesday, killing 38 people. Officials in Moscow have said a drone attack was underway in the region that the Azerbaijan Airlines flight was destined for but have not addressed statements from aviation experts who blamed the crash on Russian air defenses responding to a Ukrainian attack. The plane was flying from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to Chechnya on Wednesday when it crashed, killing 38 people and leaving all 29 survivors injured. Court rules Georgia lawmakers can subpoena Fani Willis for information related to her Trump case ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has ruled that the Georgia state Senate can subpoena Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. It's part of a inquiry into whether Willis has engaged in misconduct during her prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump. But Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura Ingram is giving Willis the chance to contest whether lawmakers’ demands are overly broad before Willis responds. A Republican-led committee was formed earlier this year and sent subpoenas to Willis in August seeking to compel her to testify during its September meeting and to produce scores of documents. Willis argued that the committee didn’t have the power to subpoena her. In states that ban abortion, social safety net programs often fail families MEMPHIS, Tenn. GOP state leaders in Tennessee and other states that banned abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 argue that they are bolstering services for families. Recent research and an analysis by The Associated Press has found that from the time a Tennessee woman gets pregnant, she faces greater obstacles to a healthy pregnancy, a healthy child and a financially stable family life than the average American mom. They’re nearly indestructible and can build up in various environments, including the human body. The company stopped using the harmful chemicals in 2014 and says it’s working with state regulators on testing and cleanup efforts. AT&T Technology Services employees in the US won't have "one-to-one seating" when they begin returning to the office 5 days a week in the new year, the company's CTO wrote in a new memo. The telecom giant's chief technology officer, Jeremy Legg, detailed how the new in-office policy would be implemented across his US ATS team in a Wednesday memo obtained by Business Insider. for US ATS employees will begin a phased rollout on January 6 and is expected to be fully implemented for most teams by March 3, the memo said. "Our purpose at AT&T is connecting people to greater possibility," the CTO wrote. "We firmly believe that working together, in person and in proximity to our peers, is the best way for ATS employees to fulfill that purpose." Legg oversees AT&T's technology organizations for business, consumer, IT and cloud, data and analytics, security, network architecture and AT&T Labs, and new product development. The ATS team includes roughly 10,000 workers in the US. AT&T told BI that organizations within the company have the flexibility to determine the right approach for their teams based on business needs and many are staggering the return of employees. The memo comes after BI first reported that AT&T was tightening its return-to-office mandate from three days a week to five full workdays. Legg said in the email that the company understands that not every employee can be on-site every single day due to "travel, vacations, or other reasons" and "leaders will work with employees to provide the needed occasional flexibility." Although several expansion projects are underway in Atlanta and Dallas, Legg said AT&T "will not offer one-for-one seating per employee" and the company "will observe capacity vs. demand and make adjustments" as needed. Legg's memo said that teams assigned to AT&T's Atlanta-area locations will be notified if their full return-to-office date is delayed as construction on additional space progresses. Several employees have told BI that workspace capacity has been a challenge, even with the prior hybrid schedule arrangement. Employees told BI it's common for workers to end up sitting in the hallways or working in the cafeteria to avoid running afoul of the company's attendance-tracking system. One employee said their office has more than 1,200 people assigned to it, with roughly 150 desks available. "I know returning to the office 5 days a week is a significant change for some," Legg said in his memo. "By coming together in person, we can strengthen our connections, foster a vibrant culture, and achieve our shared goals."
