Crypto bulls are eager to see Trump establish a "bitcoin strategic reserve." Supporters say the US could manage its debt if it buys and holds bitcoin now. Yet, sources tell BI they expect obstacles to making the reserve happen. Donald Trump's rise as the first " crypto president " has riled up the industry in anticipation of a golden age for cryptocurrencies. Among a host of awaited changes, crypto enthusiasts are especially eager to see Trump follow through on a pledge he made in July to create a national bitcoin stockpile . With Trump now set to reenter the White House in January, the promise has helped slingshot bitcoin to a string of record highs, with few signs of any impending slowdown . "I think it's exciting in the sense that it certainly gives credibility to cryptocurrency and bitcoin,"Scott Mason, a Holland & Knight senior policy advisor with expertise in blockchain and crypto, told Business Insider. What would a bitcoin reserve do? In the same week that Trump pledged to create a national stockpile, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis put out the leading blueprint for what one could look like. Under her so-called BITCOIN Act , the US would accumulate 1 million bitcoins over 20 years, with the goal of owning approximately 5% of the total supply. " Bitcoin has been appreciating since inception . This would be an asset that could help shore up the US dollar as the world reserve currency, and serve as a reserve that could be used to reduce the national debt significantly," she explained on Thursday. The industry is excited by this idea. Presuming that the token's finite supply leads to a higher price, amassing a portion of bitcoin today could allow the US to offset rising debt issues in the coming years. It is also presumed that bitcoin's appreciating value will counterbalance the weakening of the dollar in the event of another bout of inflation. "This is the type of action that would cost us very little financially, but could have a profound impact on our financial health in the future," crypto bull Anthony Pompliano wrote in a LinkedIn post. calling for the US to print $250 billion to rake in more bitcoin. Yet, not everyone is convinced. Ananya Kumar, deputy director for the future of money at the Atlantic Council's GeoEconomics Center, is uncertain about bitcoin's role as an inflation hedge. Unlike gold, she said that the currency still tends to track the stock market. If the US invests in a volatile asset, it risks downstream effects on the economy, she told BI. Under Sen. Lummis' proposal, the US would convert gold certificates held by the Federal Reserve to today's fair market value before selling them and using the proceeds to buy bitcoin . That's not inconsequential, Kumar said: "It is incredibly inflationary, and you're going to have to rethink how the Fed works. You're sort of adding a time component to all of this." Other lingering questions remain, such as whether the US public — most of whom does not own bitcoin — will favor the idea. Whatever the obstacles may be, investors are largely optimistic that a reserve is coming in the next year. According to the betting market Kalshi , there's a 64% chance it will happen before 2026. But it might all depend on Congress, where support appears to be lacking right now, crypto billionaire Michael Novogratz said. "While the Republicans control the Senate, they don't have 60 seats," the Galaxy founder told Bloomberg TV , while questioning the need for a reserve. For those hoping that the incoming administration could create the reserve through executive action, it will require guardrails that may be too big for a presidential order to handle, Mason said. "Who controls the balance? Who controls the ability to buy and sell?" he told Business Insider. Congress will ultimately have to collaborate with the Federal Reserve and the Treasury, and it could take a while for that to happen. Both Kumar and Mason said they don't expect Capitol Hill to prioritize the reserve. Even in terms of crypto legislation, other bills will likely come first. What would happen to bitcoin? Novogratz predicted that the event would amount to such a paradigm shift that it would send bitcoin to $500,000. His forecast is based on the idea that other countries would feel pressured to follow suit and establish their own bitcoin reserves. The same theory is why Matt Mena, crypto research strategist at 21Shares, previously told BI that bitcoin could soar to $1 million "almost overnight." "Such a move would trigger a rush by other countries to front-run the US and their neighbors, spurring global competition to build reserves," he said over email. "In this scenario, Bitcoin's total market cap could easily surpass gold's." Kumar doesn't expect the reserve's impact to be that direct. Crypto bulls may be taking an example from the fact that countries tend to have an oil reserve, and the price of oil can be impacted when they. add to or reduce their stockpile. However, the difference is that oil is strategically important during major supply disruptions, while bitcoin's importance as an asset for governments to own is still being debated.Predators play the Devils following Josi's 2-goal gameSt. Louis Blues (9-12-1, in the Central Division) vs. New York Rangers (12-6-1, in the Metropolitan Division) New York; Monday, 7 p.m. EST BOTTOM LINE: The New York Rangers host the St. Louis Blues after Artemi Panarin scored two goals in the Rangers' 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Nevada 90, Oklahoma St. 78By James Royal, Ph.D., Bankrate.com Cryptocurrencies are enormously volatile, but that volatility can create opportunities for profit if you’re looking to trade these digital assets. Cryptos such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have risen a lot since their debut — but they’ve also experienced tremendous boom-bust cycles along the way. Experienced traders have been speculating on cryptocurrencies for years, but how can you get started if you’re new to the crypto market? Here’s how to start investing in cryptocurrency and the significant risks you need to watch out for. 5 steps for investing in cryptocurrency First things first, if you’re looking to invest in crypto, you need to have all your finances in order. That means having an emergency fund in place, a manageable level of debt and ideally a diversified portfolio of investments . Your crypto investments can become one more part of your portfolio, one that helps raise your total returns, hopefully. Pay attention to these five other things as you’re starting to invest in cryptocurrencies. As you would for any investment, understand exactly what you’re investing in. If you’re buying stocks, it’s important to read the annual report and other SEC filings to analyze the companies thoroughly. Plan to do the same with any cryptocurrencies , since there are literally thousands of them, they all function differently and new ones are being created every day. You need to understand the investment case for each trade. In the case of many cryptocurrencies , they’re backed by nothing at all, neither hard assets nor cash flow of an underlying entity. That’s the case for Bitcoin , for example, where investors rely exclusively on someone paying more for the asset than they paid for it. In other words, unlike stock, where a company can grow its profits and drive returns for you that way, many crypto assets must rely on the market becoming more optimistic and bullish for you to profit. Some of the most popular coins include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana , Dogecoin and Tether (a stablecoin) . So before investing, understand the potential upside and downside. If your financial investment is not backed by an asset or cash flow, it could end up being worth nothing. A mistake that many new investors make is looking at the past and extrapolating that to the future. Yes, Bitcoin used to be worth pennies, but now is worth much more . The key question, however, is “Will that growth continue into the future, even if it’s not at quite that meteoric rate?” Investors look to the future, not to what an asset has done in the past. What will drive future returns? Traders buying a cryptocurrency today need tomorrow’s gains, not yesterday’s. The prices of cryptocurrencies are about as volatile as an asset can get. They could drop quickly in seconds on nothing more than a rumor that ends up proving baseless. That can be great for sophisticated investors who can execute trades rapidly or who have a solid grasp on the market’s fundamentals, how the market is trending and where it could go. For new investors without these skills — or the high-powered algorithms that direct these trades — it’s a minefield. Volatility is a game for high-powered Wall Street traders, each of whom is trying to outgun other deep-pocketed investors. A new investor can easily get crushed by the volatility. That’s because volatility shakes out traders, especially beginners, who get scared. Meanwhile, other traders may step in and buy on the cheap. In short, volatility can help sophisticated traders “buy low and sell high” while inexperienced investors “buy high and sell low.” If you’re trading any asset on a short-term basis, you need to manage your risk , and that can be especially true with volatile assets such as cryptocurrency. So as a newer trader, you’ll need to understand how best to manage risk and develop a process that helps you mitigate losses. And that process can vary from individual to individual: Newer traders should consider setting aside a certain amount of trading money and then using only a portion of it, at least at first. If a position moves against them, they’ll still have money in reserve to trade with later. The ultimate point is that you can’t trade if you don’t have any money. So keeping some cash in reserve means you’ll always have a bankroll to fund your trading. It’s important to manage risk, but that will come at an emotional cost. Selling a losing position hurts, but doing so can help you avoid worse losses later. Finally, it’s important to avoid putting money that you need into speculative assets. If you can’t afford to lose it — all of it — you can’t afford to put it into risky assets such as cryptocurrency, or other speculative assets, for that matter. Whether it’s a down payment for a house or an important upcoming purchase, money that you need in the next few years should be kept in safe accounts so that it’s there when you need it. And if you’re looking for an absolutely sure return, your best option is to pay off high-interest debt. You’re guaranteed to earn (or save) whatever interest rate you’re paying on the debt. You can’t lose there. Finally, don’t overlook the security of any exchange or broker you’re using. You may own the assets legally, but someone still has to secure them, and their security needs to be tight. If they don’t think their cryptocurrency is properly secured, some traders choose to invest in a crypto wallet to hold their coins offline so they’re inaccessible to hackers or others. Remember that investing in cryptocurrency can be part of a broader investment strategy, but shouldn’t be your only one. Other ways to invest in cryptocurrency While investing directly in cryptocurrency is popular, traders have other ways to get into the crypto game, some more directly than others. These include: Each of these methods varies in its riskiness and exposure to cryptocurrency, so you’ll want to understand exactly what you’re buying and whether it fits your needs. Cryptocurrency investing FAQs In theory it takes only a few dollars to invest in cryptocurrency. Most crypto exchanges, for example, have a minimum trade that might be $5 or $10. Other crypto trading apps might have a minimum that’s even lower. However, it’s important to understand that some trading platforms will take a huge chunk of your investment as a fee if you’re trading small amounts of cryptocurrency. So it’s important to look for a broker or exchange that minimizes your fees. In fact, many so-called “free” brokers embed fees — called spread mark-ups — in the price you pay for your cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is based on blockchain technology . Blockchain is a kind of database that records and timestamps every entry into it. The best way to think of a blockchain is like a running receipt of transactions. When a blockchain database powers cryptocurrency, it records and verifies transactions in the currency, verifying the currency’s movements and who owns it. Many crypto blockchain databases are run with decentralized computer networks. That is, many redundant computers operate the database, checking and rechecking the transactions to ensure that they’re accurate. If there’s a discrepancy, the networked computers have to resolve it. Some cryptocurrencies reward those who verify the transactions on the blockchain database in a process called mining. For example, miners involved with Bitcoin solve very complex mathematical problems as part of the verification process. If they’re successful, miners receive a predetermined award of Bitcoins. To mine Bitcoins , miners need powerful processing units that consume huge amounts of energy. Many miners operate gigantic rooms full of such mining rigs in order to extract these rewards. As of October 2024, running the Bitcoin system burned as much energy per year as the country of Poland. If you’re looking to invest in Bitcoin, you have a variety of ways to do so, and you can work with a number of companies, including: If you’re looking to buy Bitcoin, pay particular attention to the fees that you’re paying. Here are other key things to watch out for as you’re buying Bitcoin . What are altcoins? An altcoin is an alternative to Bitcoin. Many years ago, traders would use the term pejoratively. Since Bitcoin was the largest and most popular cryptocurrency, everything else was defined in relation to it. So, whatever was not Bitcoin was lumped into a catch-all category called altcoins . While Bitcoin is still the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization by far, it’s no longer the only game in town. Other altcoins such as Ethereum and Solana have grown in popularity, making the term altcoin somewhat outmoded. Now with a reported 15,000 or more cryptocurrencies in existence, it makes less sense than ever to define the industry as “Bitcoin and then everything else.” Bottom line Cryptocurrency is a highly speculative area of the market, and many smart investors have decided to put their money elsewhere. For beginners who want to get started trading crypto, however, the best advice is to start small and only use money that you can afford to lose. NORTH SOUND, Antigua (AP) — Bangladesh avoided the follow-on but trailed West Indies by 181 runs with one wicket remaining at stumps Sunday on the third day of the first test. When bad light stopped play at 5:14 p.m. local time, the tourists were 269-9, replying to West Indies’ first-innings total of 450-9 declared. Taskin Ahmed was 11 not out and Shoriful Islam was on 5 when the umpires ruled the light was too poor to continue. The last pair endured some hostile bowling from Alzarri Joseph in fading light in the last few overs before stumps. Taskin, especially, was Joseph's target and the pair exchanged words on several occasions. Joseph finished the day with 3-69 from 25 overs. Justin Greaves followed his maiden century in West Indies' innings with career-best figures of 2-34 and Jayden Seales took 2-42. “I think (the pitch) was a bit slow today but I think we bowled well as a unit,” Joseph said. “We still have a lead of 181 so tomorrow we're just going to try to get the last wicket as soon as we can and put a score on the board.” Mominul Haque and Jaker Ali made half centuries at the top and lower down the order which held together the Bangladesh innings. Mominul made a dogged 50 from 116 balls at No. 3, sharing partnerships of 45 with Shahadat Hossain (18) and 62 with Litton Das (40). After posting his 21st half century in tests, Mominul was out next ball. Jaker, batting at No. 7, reached his second half century in as many tests from 85 balls. He was out for 53 with the total 246-8. Taskin and Hasan Mahmud saw Bangladesh past the follow-on target with eight wickets down in the 93rd over, then Shoriful joined with Taskin for three overs to see out the day. For most of the day, Bangladesh made slow and cautious progress with only sporadic bursts of accelerated scoring. There was a period of brisk scoring at the start of the second session and again by Taijul Islam (25) when the second new ball was taken at 196-6 after 80 overs. Resuming at 40-2, Bangladesh reached 50 after 26 overs, added 65 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first session and 60 for the loss of two wickets in the second. West Indies applied the squeeze at times during the second session, keeping runs down and putting the batters under pressure. Between the 51st and 61st overs, Bangladesh added only 10 runs for the loss of Litton's wicket. West Indies bowled with discipline throughout a day in which 78 overs were bowled and seven wickets fell. ___ AP cricket:Downing Street condemned Mr Putin for further escalating the conflict by using a ballistic missile with a range of “several thousand kilometres” against the city of Dnipro. Mr Putin suggested the missile could be used to hit Kyiv’s allies who have given Ukraine permission to use Western-supplied weapons to hit targets within Russia. The UK is believed to have allowed its Storm Shadow missiles to be used by Ukrainian forces within the Kursk region of Russia, while the US has given permission for its ATACMS weapons to be fired at targets in Mr Putin’s country. Mr Putin confirmed Russia has tested a new intermediate-range weapon, saying it came in response to Ukrainian strikes on the Russian territory with US and British missiles earlier this week. The Russian leader declared that Russia would issue advance warnings before strikes on other countries to allow civilians to evacuate to safety. “In response to the use of American and British long-range weapons on November 21 of this year, the Russian armed forces launched a combined strike on one of the facilities of the Ukrainian defence industry,” Mr Putin said in a televised address. “One of the newest Russian medium-range missile systems was tested in combat conditions, in this case, with a ballistic missile in a non-nuclear hypersonic warhead.” He added: “We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities.” The US said the weapon was a new, experimental intermediate-range missile based on Russia’s existing RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. In Westminster, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “My understanding is that it is the first time that Russia has used a ballistic missile in Ukraine with a range of several thousand kilometres.” No 10 said it was “an example of escalatory behaviour from Russia”. But the Prime Minister’s spokesman added it “only serves to strengthen our resolve and to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to act in self-defence against Russia’s reckless and illegal invasion”. Defence Secretary John Healey said: “Since the illegal invasion of Ukraine began, Russia has consistently and irresponsibly escalated the conflict while Ukraine continues to fight in self-defence for a democratic future. “Today’s ballistic missile attack is yet another example of Putin’s recklessness.” The missile’s range far outstrips that of newly authorised US and British supplied weapons. The distance from Moscow to London is around 2,500km, suggesting the range of the new missile could threaten the UK. Russia’s military claims it has shot down two British-made Storm Shadow missiles, following reports that debris from the weapons had been discovered in the country’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have launched an incursion. Mr Healey earlier revealed to a committee of MPs that the UK knew Russia had been “preparing for months” to fire a new ballistic missile. Mr Healey warned Ukraine faces a “serious moment” in its defence against Mr Putin’s invasion, but refused to confirm that Kyiv had been given permission to use Storm Shadow in Russia. Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence have repeatedly declined to comment publicly on the use of Storm Shadow. “It risks both operational security and in the end the only one that benefits from such a public debate is President Putin,” the Defence Secretary told MPs. Battle lines in Ukraine are now “less stable than at any time since the early days of the full-scale Russian invasion”, Mr Healey said, citing British intelligence. Speaking at the same time, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the House of Commons the UK “will not be deterred or distracted by reckless threats” from Mr Putin, who has lowered the threshold for using his nuclear arsenal. Sir Keir also insisted that all the UK’s support for Kyiv was “in accordance with international law” and “always for self-defence”. For years, patients in the U.S. health care system have grown frustrated with a bureaucracy they don’t understand. Doctors are included in an insurer’s network one year but not the next. Getting someone on the phone to help can be next to impossible. Coverage of care and prescriptions is often unceremoniously denied. This week’s fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has unleashed a wave of public feeling — exasperation, anger, resentment, helplessness — from Americans sharing personal stories of interactions with insurance companies, often seen as faceless corporate giants. In particular, the words written on ammunition found at the shooting scene — “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” echoing a phrase used to describe how insurers dodge claim payouts — amplified voices that have long been critical of the industry. “All of a sudden, I am fired up again,” said Tim Anderson, describing how his wife, Mary, had to deal with UnitedHealthcare coverage denials before she died from Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in 2022. Anderson said they couldn’t get coverage for machines to help his wife breathe or talk — toward the end, she communicated by blinking when he showed her pictures. The family had to rely on donations from a local ALS group, he said. “The business model for insurance is don’t pay,” said Anderson, 67, of Centerville, Ohio. “When Mary could still talk, she said to me to keep fighting this,” he added. “It needs to be exposed.” For Anderson and others, Thompson's death and the message left at the scene have created an opportunity to vent their frustrations. Conversations at dinner tables, office water coolers, social gatherings and on social media have pivoted to the topic, as police efforts to find the gunman keep the case in the news. Hans Maristela said he understands why the chatter is bubbling up. The 54-year-old caregiver in California was moved to comment on Facebook about UnitedHealthcare's reputation of denying coverage. As a Catholic, he said, he grieves Thompson's death and feels for his family, especially with the holidays around the corner. But he sees frustration with insurers even among his clients, most of them wealthy older people who've not been shielded from high out-of-pocket costs. “And then you know the CEO of this company you pay a lot of money to gets $10 million dollars a year, you won’t have a lot of sympathy for the guy," Maristela said, citing Thompson's compensation package that included base pay and stock options. “Health care is a business, I understand, but the obsession with share price, with profit, has to be reevaluated.” University of Pennsylvania researcher Michael Anne Kyle said she's not surprised by the growth of conversation around insurers. “People are often struggling with this by themselves, and when you see someone else talk about it, that may prompt you to join the conversation,” she said. Kyle studies how patients access care and said she's seen frustration with the system build for years. Costs are rising, and insurers are using more controls such as prior authorizations and doctor networks to manage them. Patients are often stuck in the middle of disputes between doctors and insurers. “Patients are already spending a lot of money on health care, and then they’re still facing problems with the service,” she said. Insurers often note that most of the money they bring in goes back out the door to pay claims, and that they try to corral soaring costs and the overuse of some care. In Ohio, Anderson said his initial reaction to the CEO shooting was to question whether it was connected to a coverage denial, like the ones he'd experienced with his wife. “I definitely do not condone killing people,” he said. “But I read it and said, 'I wonder if somebody had a spouse whose coverage was denied.’” It's something Will Flanary, a Portland-based ophthalmologist and comedian with a large social media following, saw online a lot in the shooting's immediate aftermath and found very telling. “It’s zero sympathy,” he said. “And the lesson to take away from that is not, ‘Let’s shame people for celebrating a murder.’ No, it’s: ‘Look at the amount of anger that people have toward this system that’s taken advantage of people and do something to try to fix that.’” Flanary's content, published under the name Dr. Glaucomflecken, started out as niche eye doctor jokes and a way to cope with his own experiences with two cancer diagnoses and a sudden cardiac arrest. But it has evolved, featuring character skits that call attention to and satirize the decisions of large health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare. He said he's never seen conversations around health insurance policy take off the way they did this week — and he hopes these new voices can help bring about change. “I’m always talking about how powerful social media can be with advocacy," he said, "because it really is the only way to put a significant amount of pressure on these corporations who are doing bad things for patients.” ____ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Another week, another dominant win for the Detroit Lions without giving up a touchdown. The Lions topped the Indianapolis Colts, 24-6, on Sunday afternoon to run their win streak to nine straight games. Their defense was once again dominant as it ran its own streak of consecutive quarters without giving up a touchdown to 10. Jahmyr Gibbs scored two touchdowns to lead an offensive effort that was good enough to keep Detroit atop the NFC as it heads into a short week and Thanksgiving game against the Bears. More College Football RELATED CONTENT: UFC 310 pits 2 champs in the main event but rest of the card worth a look By MARK ANDERSON AP Sports Writer LAS VEGAS (AP) — Following a Jon Jones-headlined card is never an easy task, and without a doubt, UFC 310 won’t sell a lot of pay-per-views based on Saturday night’s main event alone. But the card as a whole — even the preliminaries — is filled with intriguing matchups and storylines to close out 2024. Whether that’s enough to match the attention Jones received for a third-round technical knockout of Stipe Miocic on Nov. 16 at New York’s Madison Square Garden is another matter. As for the main event, Alexandre Pantoja will defend his flyweight championship against Kai Asakura, who is making his UFC debut. They replaced what was to be the main event when welterweight champion Belal Muhammad pulled out because of a bone infection in his foot. Muhammad was to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov, who now takes on Ian Machado Garry in the co-main event. Rakhmonov (18-0) is the third-ranked challenger and Garry (15-0) is seventh. Three other matches include former champions — heayweight Ciryl Gane, bantamweight Aljamain Sterling and middleweight Chris Weidman. Gane takes on Alexander Volkov, Sterling will fight as a featherweight against Movsar Evloev and Weidman meets Eryk Anders. Pantoja (28-5) is making his third title defense since winning a split decision over Brandon Moreno at UFC 290 on July 8, 2023. The 34-year-old followed that with a pair of one-sided unanimous-decision victories. Those performances established him as the clear fighter in his class, and now Pantoja is headlining his second pay-per-view card this year. The first was in his native Brazil for UFC 301 on May 4 and now this one in what is still proclaimed by many to be the fight capital of the world. “That’s a gift God gave to me,” Pantoja said. “That’s an opportunity to come here and make this main event. I think 2024 was a very good year for flyweights. I think maybe it’s the best year for us.” Asakura (21-4) will test his skills in the UFC for the first time at age 31. He was the Rizin Fighting Federation bantamweight champion, so entering the octagon for mixed-martial arts premier organization is quite a leap for the Japan native. BetMGM Sportsbook makes Pantoja a 2-5 favorite. “The UFC fans have never seen anybody fight like me ever before,” Asakura said through an interpreter. “I always aim to go for a KO finish. I’m an exciting fighter and I’m here to bring excitement back to the flyweight division.” Asakura said he has created interested since announcing he was joining the UFC and even has been stopped in Las Vegas by fans curious about how his debut might go. “I realize there are some expectations on this event and this fight, and I’m going to do my best to exceed those expectations and give those fans something very exciting,” Asakura said. Pantoja said it made sense for the UFC to pair him with Asakura, a champion in another organization, because he had beaten the top two contenders twice each. “I looked at my rank and tried to figure out who’s going to be my next opponent,” Pantoja said. “Then the UFC contacted Askaura. I think that’s a very good move. That’s the power about UFC, to bring a champ from another promotion. “If you want to be the best fighter in the world — that’s what he thinks — you need to win the UFC belt.” The Associated Press contributed to this article.Northern girls basketball pounces on Shippensburg to capture fourth straight tip-off title
