In one of this year's League Two Boxing Day fixtures, Walsall and Doncaster Rovers go head to head in a top-of-the-table clash at the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Thursday. While victory could send the visitors into second-place, the Saddlers set out in search of a fifth league win on the bounce as they look to open up a nine-point lead at the top of the standings. © Imago High-flying Walsall pulled six points clear at the top of the League Two standings last Saturday when they picked up a 2-0 victory over 10-man Harrogate Town at the Exercise Stadium. With Josh March receiving his marching orders after two quick-fire bookings, the visitors took advantage of their numerical upper hand as Albert Adomah doubled the advantage after Nathan Lowe put them in front in the 34th minute. While this marked a fourth straight defeat for Harrogate, Walsall have now won five games on the bounce, picking up four back-to-back victories in the League Two and seeing off Reading on penalties in the second round of the EFL Trophy on December 10. Matt Sadler 's men are also unbeaten in 11 straight league matches, claiming seven wins and four draws, and have lost just one of their most recent 15 matches across all competitions, which came on November 30 whe they suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup second round. Having guided the club to an 11th-placed finish last season after taking over at the helm of affair in January, it has been an impressive first full season for Sadler as Walsall currently lead the way at the top of the League Two table with 43 points from 20 games, six points above second-placed Port Vale. The Saddlers' solid first half of the season has been owing to their strength at both ends of the pitch as they have scored a league-high 37 goals so far and currently host the joint-most clean sheets of all 24 teams in the division (9). Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, ensured they remain within touching distance of Walsall at the upper echelons of the table as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers at the Eco-Power Stadium last Saturday. Joseph Olowu opened the scoring in the 38th minute to hand the hosts a first-half lead and after Patrick Kelly and Kyle Hurst scored after the break to make sure of the result, substitute Sol Solomon netted in the 83rd minute to give Tranmere something to cheer. Before that, Doncaster saw their nine-game unbeaten run come to an end on December 10, when they were beaten 1-0 by Port Vale EFL Trophy second round, four days before suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon. Having secured a fifth-placed finish last term before a gruesome penalty-shootout loss to Crewe Alexandra in the playoff semi-finals, Grant McCann 's men have picked up 10 wins and six draws from their 21 League League Two games to collect 36 points and sit third in the table, one point off second-placed Port Vale. While Doncaster will be looking to continue from where they left off Tranmere and leapfrog Port Vale in the table, they have lost five of their last six league visits to the Poundland Bescot Stadium since September 2014. © Imago Walsall will head into the Boxing Day showdown without the services of experienced forward Joshua Gordon and 18-year-old midfielder Dylan Thomas , who are recuperating from injuries. Brandon Comley is also set to sit out his sixth straight game while English defender Priestley Farquharson continues his lengthy spell on the sidelines since coming off injured against Tranmere in August. Jamille Matt missed the game against Harrogate through suspension due to accumulated yellow cards but the 35-year-old forward, who has six league goals, is eligible to return to action here. As for Doncaster, veteran defender Richard Wood has been ruled out since picking up a severe injury against Newport County on August 17 and the 39-year-old is out of contention for Thursday's clash. He is joined on the club's injury table by fellow defender Thomas Nixon , who has missed each of the last six games since coming off injured against Carlisle United back in November. Walsall possible starting lineup: Simkin; Okagbue, Williams, Allen; Barrett, Jellis, Stirk, Lakin, Gordon; Adomah, Lowe Doncaster Rovers possible starting lineup: Sharman-Lowe; Emmanuel, Olowu, McGrath, Fleming; Bailey, Kelly; Molyneux, Broadbent, Gibson; Sharp Looking at recent meetings between Walsall and Doncaster, we anticipate a thrilling matchup at the Poundland Bescot Stadium with plenty of goalmouth action. While we expect McCann's men to put up a fight, home advantage gives Walsall an edge here and we are backing them to make it a cheerful Boxing Day for their supporters. According to Euronews, this trend, which has been developing over nearly two decades, is largely attributed to growing support for radical right-wing parties, with many voters feeling marginalised and expressing concerns about immigration, which they believe drives down wages. Also Read | American Airlines Operations Up and Running Again After Brief Grounding Due to Systemwide Technical Issues on Christmas Eve. Pascal Delwit, a political science professor at the Universite libre de Bruxelles, stated that this shift is not a temporary phenomenon but a long-term political movement, as radical right-wing parties gain ground; some have even entered government or provided support to certain administrations. "These voters also express concerns about immigration, with some feeling that 'migratory flows are now too great' and contribute to keeping wages too low," Delwit said as quoted by Euronews. "This is a movement that has been evolving for almost twenty years, and it's showing a steady upward trend. More radical right-wing parties are either in government or supporting certain administrations," he added. According to Euronews, in the June 2024 European elections, the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) secured 188 out of 720 seats in the European Parliament, followed by the Social Democrats (S&D) with 136 seats and the far-right Patriots for Europe with 84 seats. This shift has moved the European Parliament towards the right, with parties like the EPP, European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), and the far-right Patriots for Europe increasing their influence. The long-standing "cordon sanitaire" aimed at preventing far-right influence in European politics has largely collapsed, as per Euronews. As a result, the EPP is now in a position to form alliances with the Social Democrats, Liberals, and even far-right groups. The new European executive, which took office in December, also has a right-leaning majority, with 12 out of 27 European Commissioners, including President Ursula von der Leyen, being affiliated with the EPP, Euronews reported. Alongside the European elections, right-wing and far-right parties made notable gains in national elections. In Austria, the far-right FPO, led by Herbert Kickl, achieved the best result for the far-right since World War II. In Belgium, the conservative N-VA party topped parliamentary elections, followed by the far-right Vlaams Belang. Portugal also saw a shift rightward with the centre-right opposition's victory in March, while in France, the far-right National Rally (RN) emerged as the leading party in both European and parliamentary elections, as reported by Euronews. Although the left has lost ground in many European countries, it remains in power in Denmark, Spain, Lithuania, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia. Romania's left-wing government secured a parliamentary victory, despite a strong far-right showing, though the presidential election was annulled amid allegations of foreign interference. The political developments in Europe mirror the rightward shift seen in the US, particularly with Donald Trump's victory, though each region's dynamics are shaped by different factors. All eyes are now on Germany, where the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition may lead to early elections, marking a potential turning point for European politics in 2025. As the investigation into the arms shipment refusal unfolds, it is crucial for both the US and Spain to maintain open dialogue and cooperation in order to resolve the dispute amicably. The incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of diplomatic relations and the importance of upholding international agreements and standards in the realm of arms trade.New Delhi In a turnaround development, the government is unlikely to make a policy or regulate artificial intelligence (AI) as the new thinking is that there are enough existing legal safeguards to penalise wrongdoers. Instead, the government is likely to come up with a voluntary compliance code for different players, top level government sources said. “We don’t believe that right now there is a need to actually legislate on AI. There are three elements here which are covered in the existing legal frameworks or frameworks which are under creation. One is data – how personal data is treated (through Digital Personal Data Protection Act). Second is the issue which relates to misrepresentation and deep fakes. Third, is the question of what happens with copyrights,” a senior official at Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) told businessline . In terms of misrepresentation, it is not the question of regulation because misrepresentation is covered under existing law, the official said adding that the only issue is the speed with which a misrepresentation can be discovered. “That is more technological issue on how quickly you are able to detect it and how quickly are you able to address the issue moving forward. For copyrights , there is a law and now you also have a case (Open AI vs ANI). So, the copyright part of it has to be administered under the existing law,” said the official. Recently, the Asian News International (ANI) agency of India filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for using ANI news content to training its AI chatbot. All of these elements in different ways are getting covered, and for the remaining issues, a voluntary compliance code can be evolved which can work to begin with, he said. Having said that, the official also added that the government at some point in time may legislate on AI. “We will watch the situation and at an appropriate stage if there is a need , we will legislate, that’s all. So, I think that is the stance. It’s a sovereign function, the government can legislate at any point if there is a need on a case to case basis. We are discussing with stakeholders on this voluntary code and things...some discussions are going on,” he said. For instance, the government is discussing AI Safety Institutes that it is planning to set up. Discussions are going on about what needs to happen there, he added. Earlier this year, AI regulation was a much-debated topic, especially after deep fake videos of actors and citizens surfaced and AI systems like Google’s Gemini showed inconsistencies in responses about political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There were also reports of MeitY drafting a legislation which could be a standalone law requiring social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X to include watermarks and labels on AI-generated content. MeitY was also exploring legal frameworks to mandate companies developing large language models to train their systems on Indian local languages and context-specific content. Comments

It's no secret that Salah has been a key figure for Liverpool since his arrival in 2017, consistently delivering outstanding performances and breaking records along the way. His goal-scoring exploits have made him a fan favorite at Anfield, with supporters eager to see him extend his stay at the club.LeBron James is going to have to make room for the NFL. Wednesday's doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The Baltimore Ravens' 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million while Kansas City's 29-10 win at Pittsburgh averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. The NBA's five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” While the NBA's Christmas lineup has its best viewer numbers in five years, the NFL has made Christmas one of its tentpole events during the regular season, joining Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving. “The numbers speak for themselves and LeBron can have his own view, and I’m sure more people will look at that because of this," said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media. "But, you know, we’re focused on the NFL and we’re thrilled with the results this year with the Christmas on Netflix and we’re excited to continue to build that over the next couple of years.” Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock. Viewership for Ravens-Texans peaked with the Beyoncé Bowl. The 20-minute halftime performance averaged over 27 million viewers. The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston. Global ratings and final U.S. numbers are expected to be available on Tuesday. The NFL's Christmas numbers decreased from last season, but not at the rate that usually happens when something goes from broadcast to streaming. Last year’s three games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, averaging 29.48 million on CBS. Once global and Netflix's first-party data is released, both Christmas games should surpass 30 million. The NBA's lineup saw an 84% rise over 2023. One reason for the increase is that all five games were on ABC, compared to two last year. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75. Former New York Gov. George Pataki shreds the Biden administration over the border crisis on 'The Story.' New York’s last Republican governor said this week that sanctuary jurisdictions are reminiscent of the Confederate states that balked at federal law and waged war against the Union. Former Gov. George Pataki was speaking with businessman and 2013 New York City GOP mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis on 77WABC radio when he was asked about the state of the Big Apple in that regard. "Right now, I'm concerned and people are concerned and rightfully so. But it comes down to leadership. We've had worse times in the past. I remember back in the '60s and then in the early '80s. And things got infinitely better," Pataki said. "And it comes down to having the right people with the right policies running the city, running the state and running the country. I think we're going to have the right policies in Washington. Now we just need to have the right leadership doing the right thing in Albany and in New York City." MAGAVENUE: LAWMAKERS PREP LEGISLATION TO NAME SEVERAL HEARTLAND HIGHWAYS AFTER TRUMP President Trump speaks with former New York GOP Gov. George E. Pataki. (Reuters) Catismatidis said Trump has "put his foot down" against sanctuary policies, and quipped that he now has a "very large-sized shoe" given his overwhelming electoral victory. Pataki agreed, adding that if the U.S. is to be based on the rule of law, it should apply equally everywhere. "Cities or states that can pretend that the federal rules don't apply to them are just violating the Constitution and violating our freedom... We had a Civil War over this," he said. "And, it became plain that under the Constitution, every city, every state has to follow the law of this country." Prior to the war-triggering attack on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, President James Buchanan, a Pennsylvania Democrat, was critical of Republican abolitionists and lamented his home state's opposition to the Fugitive Slave Law. Following Illinois Republican Abraham Lincoln's 1860 victory, southern states began to secede, which Buchanan opposed, while believing a military response was the wrong option. The election of Lincoln, who opposed the expansion of slavery into federal territories, alarmed Deep South states, with South Carolina leading the way in declaring secession from the Union on Dec. 20, 1860. Pataki went on to say the nation’s largest city is bucking the feds in that regard, along with Los Angeles and other cities. (Getty Images) "Trump must make them follow the law or cut off all federal funding. And I think that would be a very positive step to bring America together and to bring us forward," he said. The two discussed how New York City Council enacted a sanctuary city policy , and whether the state or federal government may step in against it. "I think [Mayor Eric] Adams may go along with [Trump intervention]," Pataki predicted, as other observers have viewed the mayor as being critical of sanctuary city policy but hamstrung by the 45-6 Democratic-majority city council. The former governor said he is optimistic about the New Year and that Trump must "dramatically reform" Washington instead of "tinker[ing] around the edges." He noted Trump does have limits, in that he cannot statutorily rein in New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg or other far-left officials. Current Gov. Some of Bellator’s biggest names are becoming increasingly frustrated with the PFL’s lack of events since the promotional takeover last year. Bellator titleholders Patricio Pitbull, Patchy Mix, and Corey Anderson are a few of the latest big-name fighters to air grievances against PFL since the 2023 merger . Mix and Anderson both fought earlier this year but are becoming increasingly agitated with the PFL’s alleged lack of transparency in booking their returns. As of this writing, the next Bellator Champions Series event is scheduled for January, featuring a Usman Nurmagomedov vs. Paul Hughes headliner . The PFL made waves across mixed martial arts when they purchased Bellator last year, bringing two of the top MMA rosters under one roof. The initial excitement from fight fans, pundits, and fighters signaled a new era for MMA and a potential competitor to the UFC. But, things haven’t gotten off to a great start this year for the PFL-Bellator marriage. Several top names, including Gegard Mousasi, have spoken out against the PFL for alleged contract breaches and other issues. To cap off an up-and-down year for PFL and Bellator, three champions, including Pitbull, took to social media to share their experiences. I wanted to fight 3x this year, but I was told I’d have to wait until December 31st and found out online my opponent would fight someone else,” Pitbull shared on X. “Then they had a replacement, I bring people over, spend more money with the camp and there’s no fight... “This is wrong,” Pitbull continued. “We need answers, we need the fighters and fans to be respected. This is not a game or just some business, these are people’s lives we are talking about. A serious promotion would give fighters the chance to fight at least 3 times a year if they’re healthy.” Anderson, the Bellator light heavyweight champion, took a more tranquil approach to implore the PFL to get him a fight. “Aging like warm cheese over here waiting for [PFL] to give me a call. But don’t get it twisted.... we still ready to defend the strap against ANYBODY! Young or Old!!” Anderson posted on X . Mix, arguably the top bantamweight in MMA, is fed up with the PFL’s lack of communication since he defended his bantamweight title in May against Magomed Magomedov. “I’ve been training my ass off for the last half of year for nothing. This is frustrating in the prime of my career and I’ve had my fight in November cancelled?” Mix said on X . “Then now again I’m being told I’m off January Dubai card? I am the best in the world and I want to fight to prove it.” Mix is referring to the January Bellator Champions Series card featuring Nurmagomedov vs. Hughes. As of this writing, it’s uncertain why the PFL scratched its original plan to book Mix’s return for the event. MMA legend and Bellator women’s flyweight champion Liz Carmouche recently praised the PFL season format in an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow . As of this writing, founder Donn Davis and the other PFL heads haven’t released a statement on Pitbull, Anderson, and Mix’s social media posts. The scathing accusations from Mix and Pitbull, in particular, come just days before one of the biggest PFL cards of the year. The 2024 PFL Championship this coming weekend features an astounding 10 world title fights, featuring top names like former UFC fighter Taila Santos against surging prospect Dakota Ditcheva. As Dana White and others have pointed out, the PFL has a long way to go to cement itself as a legitimate competitor to the UFC’s juggernaut. Time will tell if Mix, Anderson, and Pitbull get their returns booked and have their grievances made up for.
