Dungeon Masters are at the heart of every Dungeons And Dragons game. They world hard to bring together players, provide a solid level of challenge and weave chaotic choices into a story that makes sense to everyone. It’s a hard job and whether they are running the game for you or for other people, it’s okay to gift them a gift for it this holiday season. I’ve included options from all over the budgetary map. This list focuses on third party and other products outside the main line of books because it’s very likely that Dungeon Masters already have those things in their possession. That said, if you are 100% certain they don’t have a copy of the latest Player’s Handbook or Dungeon Master’s Guide , you should definitely consider those for gifts this season. Dungeon Master’s Guide Premium Map Collection Beadle & Grimm’s Pandemonium Warehouse is best known for offering premium editions of official Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. They’ve slowly branched out over the past few years by supporting other games in a similar style. They also now offer dice sets and other accessories. The Dungeon Master’s Guie Premium Map Collection zooms in on the maps in the back of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide to provide full color miniature scale maps for encounters. The set also pays respect to the section on Greyhawl by providing a pair of canvas maps suitable for framing or spreading out on the table to plot the next campaign move. The Dungeon Master Screen offers additional information on Oerth while also doubling the secret space for the DM for their notes and other vital game components. Loke Battlemats Terrain Set Loke Battlemats have become one of my favorite battlemap makers. They provide maps in many different styles from small flip books to massive collections and even unusual configurations like calendars and wrapping paper. The different styles and shapes make customizing their maps for a specific scene very easy. Their latest release The Terrain Set, offers some basic terrain types like desert, ice, grasslands, beaches and more. It includes resuable clings that stick in place for things like trees, rocks, ruins and even wrecked ships. Never in all my years did I think playing with Colorforms as a kid would come in handy later in life. Wizkids Icons Of The Realms Miniatures: Return Of The Dragons If you’re looking for miniatures to use on those new battlemaps, Wizkids has been providing them for years. They offer many different kinds of miniatures that come painted, unpainted and randomized. They’ve served as the official D&D minis provider for many years though their other ranges offer everything from superheroes to Star Trek. Return of the Dragons is their latest product in the line which updates their set that supported Tyranny of Dragons , the first campaign for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. It’s a set full of dragon minis as well as plenty of heroes and villains to use. This set is currently on pre-order which makes it perfect for the Dungeon Master kicking off a new campaign in the new year. Mini Dungeon Tome Sometimes Dungeon Masters run out of prep time. There are a lot of resources out there to help with this. I like keeping adventures around that I can drop in to a storyline or cut out bits and pieces from for my own original idea. AAW Games offers two Mini-Dungeon Tome books where each dungeon is detailed in two pages with a full map and multiple encounters. The dungeons are groups by group level and by keyword so you can figure out what might be suitable at a glance. These books are built for Fifth Edition D&D and there are versions for Pathfinder Second Edition Remastered as well. The Dungeonmeister Random Monster Generator One of the joys of being a Dungeon Master is flipping through the Monster Manual or any monster book trying to find the right adversary to challenge players. Even with all hose choices, sometimes nothing is quite the right fit. Making up new monsters takes too long...but does it have to? Enter The Dungeonmeister Random Monster Generator which turns kids flip book technology into a fun way to build unique monsters to throw at players. Each two page spread includes are, stats and even a name for the beast. The Challenge Rating for these monsters is between CR 2 and CR 4 with the authors suggesting that at higher levels just throw more of them at the heroes. These Dungeons and Dragons gifts can be purchased directly from vendors, through online marketplaces and Friendly Local Game Stores.

Article content Less than three weeks following their crushing East Division final defeat against Toronto, the Alouettes have decided that quarterback Davis Alexander provides the best option of leading the team for years to come. The Als on Wednesday announced Alexander, 26, has signed a three-year contract extension through 2027. Alexander could have become a free agent in February. And while this scenario evolved as anticipated , with youth trumping experience, it probably means the end of Cody Fajardo’s tenure as Montreal’s starting quarterback — one season after leading the Als to the Grey Cup and being named the championship game’s most valuable player . Things evolve quickly at times in the cutthroat world of pro sports. “At just 26, Davis is the future of this franchise,” general manager Danny Maciocia said Wednesday in a press release. “This season, he was called upon to play in crucial games with us and he responded very well under pressure. He has learned from Cody Fajardo for two years and is ready to take the next step. “We’re now entrusting him with the leadership of the team and we have full confidence in him.” Alexander was flying on Wednesday from Kelowna, B.C., to Montreal and couldn’t be reached for comment. But late Tuesday night, as news of the contract extension began surfacing on social media, Alexander confirmed the development by text to The Gazette. He and Maciocia will hold a news conference Thursday morning at Olympic Stadium. Alexander, 6-feet and 200 pounds, has spent three years with the Als but didn’t receive significant playing time until last season, after Fajardo suffered a hamstring injury against Toronto on July 11. Alexander replaced a struggling Caleb Evans to start the second half against Saskatchewan, July 25. Despite trailing 16-3 at halftime, Alexander rallied Montreal to a 20-16 victory. He also won his next three starts before Fajardo returned on Aug. 25. Alexander started again Oct. 14 at home against Ottawa, when Fajardo went home for the birth of his second child. The Als defeated the Redblacks that afternoon, although Alexander passed for a modest 208 yards and was intercepted once. He completed 105 of 151 passes for 1,347 yards and six touchdowns while being intercepted twice this season. The mobile Alexander also proved to be a threat along the ground, gaining 166 yards on 24 carries (6.9-yard average) with three touchdowns. Alexander is an exciting and unpredictable player who generally produced offence each time he was on the field. His teammates appeared to rally around him and his exuberance while believing in his potential. And after investing three years into developing him, Maciocia undoubtedly was loath to see Alexander sign with another team. Nonetheless, the organization is basing this decision on a limited amount of playing time. And it shouldn’t be forgotten when Fajardo was injured it was Evans, not Alexander, who became head coach Jason Maas’s first option. Evans suffered a season-ending knee injury at Hamilton on Aug. 6, forcing the Als to sign Dominique Davis, who had been released by B.C. At 32, this by no means should spell the end of Fajardo’s CFL career, but it won’t continue in Montreal. Fajardo is due a mid-January bonus payment believed to be as high as $220,000, part of an extension he signed at the end of last season. That cheque now won’t be issued. The Als can attempt to trade Fajardo, but the dance partners will be limited. Unless another CFL team is prepared to make Fajardo its starter, it won’t be willing to pay that bonus. Instead, Fajardo will probably be released by Montreal. He could restructure his contract and remain with the Als, backup CFL quarterbacks generally earn approximately between $110,000-$120,000 — a huge financial shortfall Fajardo is most likely unwilling to accept at this point of his career. It shouldn’t be forgotten the Als were undefeated in five games before Fajardo was injured, and he appeared en route to a most outstanding player season. But he was inconsistent upon his return , missing or underthrowing open receivers. Fajardo passed for 3,105 yards while completing 73.6 per cent of his throws, along with 16 touchdowns. He was intercepted seven times. Fajardo didn’t respond to a Wednesday text request from The Gazette. hzurkowsky@postmedia.com x.com/HerbZurkowsky1None

The gatherings were a major symbolic moment for the dramatic change of power in Syria, nearly a week after insurgents swept into Damascus, ousting the Assad-led state that had ruled the country for a half century with an iron grip. It came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with allies around the region looking to shape the transition, calling for an “inclusive and non-sectarian” interim government. Blinken arrived in Iraq on a previously unannounced stop after talks in Jordan and Turkey — which backs some of the Syrian insurgent factions. So far, U.S. officials have not talked of direct meetings with Syria’s new rulers. The main insurgent force, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been working to establish security and start a political transition after seizing Damascus early Sunday. The group has tried to reassure a public both stunned by Assad’s fall and concerned over extremist jihadis among the rebels. The insurgents’ leadership says it has broken with its extremist past, though HTS is still labeled a terrorist group by the United States and European countries. HTS’s leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, appeared in a video message Friday congratulating “the great Syrian people for the victory of the blessed revolution.” “I invite them to head to the squares to show their happiness without shooting bullets and scaring people,” he said. “And then after we will work to build this country and as I said in the beginning, we will be victorious by the help of God.” Syrians celebrate in the historic heart of Damascus Huge crowds, including some insurgents, packed Damascus’ historic Umayyad Mosque in the capital’s old city, many waving the rebel opposition flag — with its three red stars — which has swiftly replaced the Assad-era flag with with its two green stars. According to Arab TV stations, the Friday sermon was delivered by Mohammed al-Bashir, the interim prime minister installed by HTS this week. The scene resonated on multiple levels. The mosque, one of the world’s oldest dating back some 1,200 years, is a beloved symbol of Syria, and sermons there like all mosque sermons across Syria had been tightly controlled under Assad’s rule. Also, in the early days of the anti-government uprising in 2011, protesters would leave Friday prayers to march in rallies against Assad — before he launched a brutal crackdown that turned the uprising into a long and bloody civil war. “I didn’t step foot in Umayyad Mosque since 2011,” because of the tight security controls around it, said one worshipper, Ibrahim al-Araby. “Since 11 or 12 years, I haven’t been this happy.” Another worshipper, Khair Taha, said there was “fear and trepidation for what’s to come — but there is also a lot of hope that now we have a say and we can try to build.” Blocks away in Damascus’ biggest roundabout, named Umayyad Square, thousands gathered, including many families with small children — a sign of how, so far at least, the country’s transformation has not seen violent instability. “Unified Syria to build Syria,” the crowd chanted. Some shouted slurs against Assad and his late father, calling them pigs, an insult that would have previously led to offenders being hauled off to one of the feared detention centers of Assad’s security forces. One man in the crowd, 51-year-old Khaled Abu Chahine — originally from the southern province of Daraa, where the 2011 uprising first erupted — said he hoped for “freedom and coexistence between all Syrians, Alawites, Sunnis, Shiites and Druze.” The interim prime minister, al-Bashir, had been the head of a de facto administration created by HTS in Idlib, the opposition’s enclave in northwest Syria. The rebels had been bottled up in Idlib for years before fighters broke out in a shock offensive and marched across Syria in 10 days. Similar scenes of jubilation took place in major cities across Syria, including in Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia and Raqqa. US and its allies try to shape a rapidly changing Syria Al-Sharaa, HTS’ leader, has promised to bring a pluralistic government to Syria, seeking to dispel fears among many Syrians — especially its many minority communities — that the insurgents will bring a hard-line, extremist rule. Another key factor will be winning international recognition for a new government in Syria, a country where multiple foreign powers have their hands in the mix. The Sunni Arab insurgents who overthrew Assad did so with vital help from Turkey, a longtime foe of the U.S.-backed Kurds. Turkey controls a strip of Syrian territory along the shared border and backs an insurgent faction uneasily allied to HTS — and is deeply opposed to any gains by Syria’s Kurds. The U.S. has troops in eastern Syria to combat remnants of the Islamic State group and supports Kurdish-led fighters who rule most of the east. Since Assad’s fall, Israel has bombed sites all over Syria, saying it is trying to prevent weapons from falling into extremist hands, and has seized a swath of southern Syria along the border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, calling it a buffer zone. After talks with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Blinken said there was “broad agreement” between Turkey and the U.S. on what they would like to see in Syria. That starts with an “interim government in Syria, one that is inclusive and non-sectarian and one that protects the rights of minorities and women” and does not “pose any kind of threat to any of Syria’s neighbors,” Blinken said. Fidan said the priority was “establishing stability in Syria as soon as possible, preventing terrorism from gaining ground, and ensuring that IS and the PKK aren’t dominant” — referring to the Islamic State group and the Kurdistan Workers Party. Ankara considers the PKK within Turkey’s borders a terrorist group — as it does the Kurdish-backed forces in Syria backed by the U.S. A U.S. official said that in Ankara, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Fidan both told Blinken that Kurdish attacks on Turkish positions would have to be responded to. The official spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity to discuss private diplomatic talks. The U.S. has been trying to limit such incidents in recent days and had helped organize an agreement to prevent confrontations around the northern Syrian town of Manbij, which was taken by Turkey-backed opposition fighters from the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces earlier this week. In Baghdad, Blinken met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani, saying both countries wanted to ensure the Islamic State group — also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh — doesn’t exploit Syria’s transition to re-emerge. “Having put Daesh back in its box, we can’t let it out, and we’re determined to make sure that that doesn’t happen,” Blinken said. The U.S. official who briefed reporters said that Blinken had impressed upon al-Sudani the importance of Iraq exercising its full sovereignty over its territory and airspace to stop Iran from transporting weapons and equipment to Syria, either for Assad supporters or onward to the militant Hezbollah group in Lebanon.
By LOLITA BALDOR and FATIMA HUSSEIN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has chosen Keith Kellogg, a highly decorated retired three-star general, to serve as his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg, who is one of the architects of a staunchly conservative policy book that lays out an “America First” national security agenda for the incoming administration, will come into the role as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its third year in February. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social account, and said “He was with me right from the beginning! Together, we will secure PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH, and Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN!” Kellogg, an 80 year-old retired Army lieutenant general who has long been Trump’s top adviser on defense issues, served as national security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence , was chief of staff of the National Security Council and then stepped in as an acting security adviser for Trump after Michael Flynn resigned. As special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Kellogg will have to navigate an increasingly untenable war between the two nations. The Biden administration has begun urging Ukraine to quickly increase the size of its military by drafting more troops and revamping its mobilization laws to allow for the conscription of troops as young as 18. The White House has pushed more than $56 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s February 2022 invasion and expects to send billions more to Kyiv before Biden leaves office in less than months. Trump has criticized the billions that the Biden administration has poured into Ukraine. Washington has recently stepped up weapons shipments and has forgiven billions in loans provided to Kyiv. The incoming Republican president has said he could end the war in 24 hours, comments that appear to suggest he would press Ukraine to surrender territory that Russia now occupies. As a co-chairman of the American First Policy Institute’s Center for American Security, Kellogg wrote several of the chapters in the group’s policy book. The book, like the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025,” is a move to lay out a Trump national security agenda and avoid the mistakes of 2016 when he entered the White House largely unprepared. Kellogg in April wrote that “bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to a close will require strong, America First leadership to deliver a peace deal and immediately end the hostilities between the two warring parties.” Trump’s proposed national security advisor U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) tweeted Wednesday that “Keith has dedicated his life to defending our great country and is committed to bringing the war in Ukraine to a peaceful resolution.” Kellogg was a character in multiple Trump investigations dating to his first term. He was among the administration officials who listened in on the July 2019 call between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in which Trump prodded his Ukrainian counterpart to pursue investigations into the Bidens. The call, which Kellogg would later say did not raise any concerns on his end, was at the center of the first of two House impeachment cases against Trump, who was acquitted by the Senate both times. On Jan. 6, 2021, hours before pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, Kellogg, who was then Pence’s national security adviser, listened in on a heated call in which Trump told his vice president to object or delay the certification in Congress of President Joe Biden ’s victory. He later told House investigators that he recalled Trump saying to Pence words to the effect of: “You’re not tough enough to make the call.” Baldor reported from Washington. AP writer Eric Tucker in Washington contributed to this report.

Catch senior receiver Talyn Taylor in action on the football field for Geneva, and there’s a temptation to call the Georgia recruit a natural. He makes it look easy. It’s apparent the 6-foot-1 Taylor has plenty of inherited or God-given ability, smoothly reaching out to make a one-handed catch without breaking stride, winning a 50-50 battle for the ball or leaving a would-be tackler grasping for nothing but air with an elusive move after a catch. Add to that, Taylor has a strong work ethic that has helped him develop and refine those skills. “When he came in to take part in our summer program and what not, we all said, ‘This kid could end up being the best who has ever walked these halls,’” said Geneva coach Boone Thorgesen , who succeed Rob Wicinski in 2021, shortly before Taylor started his freshman year. “You could just tell he had that ‘it’ factor. “Obviously, he went above and beyond what we told him he could be. He made it come true.” That he has. Taylor, the 2024 Beacon-News/Courier-News Football Player of the Year, capped his high school career at Hancock Stadium in Normal by catching eight passes for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings in a 48-28 loss to East St. Louis in the Class 6A state championship game. Sixty two of those yards came after the catch. Overall, Taylor finished the season with 84 receptions for 1,617 yards and 24 TDs, adding two more scores on kick returns. Talyn will graduate early from high school and start the spring semester at Georgia to take part in spring practice. His mother, Venus , is the head softball coach at North Central College. It’s been this way for Taylor from the very beginning. “I was pretty much always a wide receiver because of my speed,” he said. “I can throw the ball but never played quarterback. I really like running with the ball. Reverses and jet sweeps are fun. “It’s definitely an exciting position, involved in all aspects of the offense.” Geneva’s Talyn Taylor (1) catches a TD pass against Amundsen during a Class 6A first-round playoff game in Geneva on Saturday, Nov 2, 2024. (Sean King / The Beacon-News) While he’s aware of the criticism of 7-on-7 offseason leagues and events, Taylor is a believer. It may not be a be-all, end-all but he thinks it helped him. “I definitely thought it could be a big contribution to my success,” Taylor said of his travel team that draws players from the Chicago area. “You’re going up against other kids who want to compete. “We went to national events in states like Florida and Texas, definitely states they say are football states, and you faced really stacked teams with four and five-star recruits.” Lifting with teammates, a fitness class at school and summer workouts on their own helped his connection this season with senior quarterback Tony Chahino and previously Nate Stempowski . As a sophomore, Taylor totaled 801 yards receiving but that dropped to 512 yards last season when he was sidelined for over a month with a knee injury. He ended up with 2,930 career yards. We see it on a daily basis. He can play inside as a slot receiver or as an outside receiver. “He has a big enough frame, good wingspan, and his route running is superb. His athleticism and ball skills are elite as well. He’s the total package, and it showed on film and when he went to showcase events. It makes him one of the best receivers in the nation.” It made him the focus of opposing defenses, but that opened up windows for fellow receivers in senior Finnegan Weppner and sophomore Bennett Konkey , who had 1,037 yards and 548 yards, respectively. “The great thing about Talyn is not only that any time he touches the ball it can go for a score,” Thorgesen said. “But just what it opens up for everyone else when defenses try to take him away.”
