As Zayn Malik closed out his first stop on his Stairway to the Sky Tour , he paid homage to late former bandmate Liam Payne . Ahead of Malik’s encore during the Saturday, November 23, show at the O2 Academy in Leeds, the lights flickered off and back on. When the power returned, a memorial graphic was shown on the wall. “Liam Payne 1993-2024,” the sign read. “Love you bro ❤️ .” According to additional fan footage , Malik’s song “Stardust” played in the background. Malik, 31, and Payne met as two-fifths of British boy band One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles . Malik was the first to leave the group , announcing his exit in March 2015. The remaining 1D lads went on their own indefinite hiatus in January 2016. Nearly eight years later, Payne died at the age of 31 after suffering a fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Malik and the other 1D singers offered their condolences via heartfelt social media tributes. “Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me, I can’t help but think selfishly that there are so many more conversations for us to have in our lives,” Malik wrote via Instagram on October 17. “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life. When I was missing home as a 17-year-old kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know that you were my friend and that I [was] loved.” You have successfully subscribed. Even though we butted heads because of this a few times, I always secretly respected you for it. When it came to the music Liam, you were the most qualified in every sense.” Malik reunited with Tomlinson, 32, Horan, 31, and Styles, 30, at Payne’s funeral in England earlier this week. The musicians were spotted entering St Mary’s Church separately, all accompanied by former tour manager Paul Higgins . Their cars even featured the bat signal in a subtle tribute to Payne, who was a fan of the Batman franchise. Payne is survived by parents Geoff and Karen , older sisters Ruth and Nicola and 7-year-old son Bear. The late “Teardrops” singer shared his only child with ex Cheryl Cole , who also attended the funeral alongside Payne’s family.

Karad (Maharashtra), Nov 24 (PTI) NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the Ladki Bahin scheme, women's participation in voting in large numbers, and religious polarisation may have played a role in Mahayuti's victory in Maharashtra assembly polls. He said the election results, declared on Saturday, are not on the expected lines but he would revitalise the party. Responding to a query on his retirement from active politics, Pawar tersely said he and his party colleagues will decide. Speaking to reporters in Karad city in Satara district, Pawar acknowledged that the NCP led by his nephew and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar secured more seats than the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), adding "Everyone knows who founded the NCP". "The Ladki Bahin scheme and religious polarisation played a role. Women's participation in large numbers could be the reason for the Mahayuti sweep in Maharashtra. We will study the reasons for the debacle and take necessary steps," he said. Pawar asserted that the NCP (SP) would go to people by re-energising the new leadership. Responding to a query on EVMs, a day after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed doubts over the massive verdict in Mahayuti's favour, Pawar said he would speak about EVMs only if he has official data. Pawar suffered the worst-ever defeat in his political career in Maharashtra polls with the NCP faction led by him winning only 10 seats in the 288-member House, while the Ajit Pawar-led NCP bagged 41. The Mahayuti scored a massive victory with the BJP winning 132 seats, Shiv Sena led by Shinde 57, and NCP 41. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi was restricted to 46 seats. Pawar said the poll outcome he had witnessed in his public life was unprecedented. "The MVA coalition put in a lot of hard work but the desired results were not achieved even though people responded positively to MVA during campaigning," the NCP (SP) chief added. He said the MVA was more confident after achieving success in Lok Sabha elections, adding that more work needs to be done. When asked if he was jolted by the poll outcome, Pawar said, "The poll results were declared yesterday. Today I am in Karad. Those who were demoralised would have sat at home". He also said fielding his grandnephew Yugendra Pawar against Ajit Pawar on the home turf of Baramati wasn't a wrong decision as someone had to contest the elections. Ajit Pawar defeated Yugendra by a margin of over 1 lakh votes to win the eighth term in Baramati. "Ajit Pawar and Yugendra Pawar cannot be compared. We were aware of this fact," Sharad Pawar added. Trung, 19, is one of a growing number of Generation-Z workers driving an e-bike trend in the communist nation where 77 million - largely petrol - motorbikes rule the roads. A cheap set of electric wheels can now be had for as little as $500, but issues include wasting hours at charging stations and people finding it hard to give up their habits. Trung has long hated riding in Hanoi, rated among the world’s top 10 polluted capital cities in 2023 by air quality technology firm IQAir. The air “is unbearable for motorbike riders”, said Trung, who is working as a motorbike taxi driver before applying to university. “When stopping at T-junctions... my only wish is to run the red light. The smell of petrol is so bad,” he told AFP after a morning rush-hour shift in air labeled “unhealthy” by IQAir. More than two thirds of the poisonous smog that blankets Hanoi for much of the year is caused by petrol vehicles, city authorities said last year. The World Bank puts the figure at 30 percent. Vietnam officials have ordered that a quarter of two-wheelers across the country must be electric by 2030 to help battle the air crisis. In 2023 just nine percent of two wheelers sold were electric, according to the International Energy Agency - although only in China was the share higher. Low running costs and cheap prices are pulling in students, who account for 80 percent of electric two-wheeler users in Vietnam, transport analyst Truong Thi My Thanh said. But for older drivers, it is harder to give up what they know. Fruit vendor Tran Thi Hoa, 43, has been driving a petrol motorbike for more than two decades and has no intention of switching. “The gasoline motorbike is so convenient. It takes me just a few minutes to fuel up,” she said. “I know e-bikes are good for the environment and can help me save on petrol, but I am too used to what I have,” Hoa told AFP from behind her facemask. Although most electric two-wheelers can easily be charged at home, fears over battery safety cause many to instead use one of the 150,000 EV power points installed by Nasdaq-listed VinFast across the country. After a fire last year in Hanoi that killed 56 people, several apartment buildings temporarily restricted EV charging - before police later ruled out battery charging as a possible cause. But some remain fearful, while others living in crowded apartment shares have no space to power up. Trung, whose VinFast scooter has a 200-kilometre range, spends up to three hours a day drinking tea and scrolling on his phone while he waits for his battery to charge - time he could be picking up fares. But home-grown start-up Selex, which makes e-bikes and battery packs, has pioneered a quick-fix - stations where riders can instantly swap a depleted battery for a new one. Bowen Wang, senior sustainable transport specialist at the World Bank, told a news conference this month, that it was delivery and taxi firms, as well as rural drivers, who could really benefit. They “typically drive much longer distances than urban users”, he said. “That’s where the swapping is critical.” Selex, which is now backed by the Asian Development Bank, has partnerships with delivery giants Lazada Logistics and DHL Express, who use e-bikes for some of their shipments. Vingroup - helmed by Vietnam’s richest man - runs a taxi company with a fleet of thousands of e-bikes, mostly in major cities. Selex founder Nguyen Phuoc Huu Nguyen, who left his job on a top-secret defense ministry research project to set up the company, urged the government to help drive momentum through incentives. He suggested that a vehicle registration fee waiver for EVs would help “end-users see the benefits of buying an e-bike”. “We all understand that EVs are good for the environment. But it needs investment.” Transport analyst Thanh emphasizes that Hanoi must also embrace public transport alongside EVs if it wants to free up gridlocked streets. But if a shift to electric cannot fully solve Hanoi’s issues, the growth in ownership “is a beacon of hope”, Thanh said. Copy 06/12/2024 10
