Resolve to work for betterment of downtrodden, needy: LG SinhaRanchi, Nov 23 (PTI) In a stunning comeback, Hemant Soren’s JMM-led alliance on Saturday stormed to power in Jharkhand for a second consecutive term, winning 56 seats in the 81-member assembly, despite an all-out blitz by the BJP-led NDA which managed only 24 seats. The majority mark in the state assembly is 41 seats. The BJP was confident that it could turn the tide in its favour through an aggressive campaign that targeted CM Soren’s leadership, and raised issues like “infiltration” from Bangladesh and the government’s alleged “corruption.” Though the BJP failed to replicate the Maharashtra triumph, where it secured a landslide, its vote share in the eastern state was more than the JMM. The BJP contested 68 seats and registered a 33.18 per cent vote share as compared to JMM’s 23.44 per cent. The BJP won 21 seats and emerged as the second largest party. JMM contested 43 seats and won 34, the highest-ever seats won by the party. The Congress got 16 seats, RJD 4 and the CPI (ML) secured 2 seats in the INDIA bloc. The aggressive BJP campaign by its top brass, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, failed to resonate in front of the ‘Adivasi’ card played by the JMM, which also sought the people’s sympathy over the arrest of chief minister Soren. The JMM’s campaign also focused on promises of welfare schemes and accused the BJP-led Centre of using the ED and CBI as tools against rival parties. Both Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana managed to create a wave of sympathy among the tribal electorate, and despite the anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP failed to capitalise on it, according to poll analysts. Soren, who retained the Barhait seat by defeating BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom by a margin of 39,791 votes, had to resign as the CM in January before being arrested by the ED in a money laundering case. He was released on bail by the high court in June, and in July, he returned as the chief minister of the state, replacing Champai Soren. In his first reaction to the poll outcome, Soren termed the INDIA bloc’s strong performance in the Jharkhand elections as a “passing of the exam of democracy.” “I express my gratitude to the people for this stupendous performance,” he said. Assam chief minister and Jharkhand BJP election co-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma described the BJP’s loss as “painful.” Sarma aggressively campaigned against the JMM and accused it of sheltering “infiltrators”. “The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we secured victory in all five by-elections in Assam,” Sarma said. Internal bickering within the BJP, especially over nominations for turncoats, seemed to have further hampered the party’s prospects. The RJD also made a surprise showing, winning four of the six seats it contested. The CPI(ML) Liberation secured two out of four seats. The LJP (Ram Vilas) won its lone contested seat, and the JD(U) won one of the two seats it fought. The AJSU party, which contested 10 seats, was almost wiped out, retaining only one seat in Mandu by a slender margin of 231 votes. Its leader, Sudesh Mahto, lost the Sili seat. Soren’s wife, Kalpana, who played a key role in revitalising the JMM following her husband’s arrest, won from Gandey by a margin of 17,142 votes defeating BJP’s Muniya Devi. Kalpana won the seat in a bypoll on June 4 this year after it fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. Kalpana’s political journey, which was never her initial choice, began in earnest after her husband’s arrest by the ED in connection with a money laundering case. Despite the personal and political challenges posed by her husband’s legal battles, Kalpana has proven to be a resilient and dynamic leader. Another key plank of the BJP’s campaign was the removal of Champai Soren as chief minister shortly after Hemant Soren’s release on bail in June. The BJP framed this as an issue of how a tribal leader had been insulted by the JMM-led coalition. Hemant Soren also accused the BJP of spending over Rs 500 crore on “malicious campaigns” against him. JMM’s populist schemes like Maiyan Samman Yojna, which provides financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to women in the 18-50 years age bracket and promises to increase it to Rs 2,500 post results, went well with the masses across the state. Soren waived farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh aimed at benefiting over 1.75 lakh farmers. Additionally, his government waived outstanding electricity bills and introduced a scheme providing free electricity for up to 200 units besides introducing welfare schemes like a universal pension. Babulal Marandi, state BJP president, won the Dhanwar seat by 35,438 votes, and former CM Champai Soren won in Seraikela by 20,447 votes. However, Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri faced a crushing defeat in Chandankiyari, losing by 33,733 votes. The elections recorded a voter turnout of 67.74%, the highest since the state’s formation in 2000. In 2019, the JMM-led alliance won 47 seats, snatching power from the BJP. JMM had won 30 seats, while Congress bagged 16, apart from the one seat bagged by the RJD. The BJP had secured 25 seats, JVM-P three, AJSU Party two, and CPI-ML and NCP one each, besides two Independents emerging victorious. (Picture by Peter Morrison) stirn Around 3,000 customers remain without power following extensive damage to the network caused by Storm Darragh, NIE Networks has said. And while the operator said it will be working to restore power to homes as quickly as possible, some homes may have to wait until Tuesday. Around 95,000 customers were hit by power cuts over the course of the storm following sustained gusts of up to 70mph. At Darragh’s peak, over 48,000 homes were without power. An amber warning for wind – the second highest level of weather warning – had been issued from 1am-3pm on Saturday. A yellow wind warning was then in place until 6am on Sunday. Among the events cancelled on Saturday was the Christmas Market in Belfast. It re-opened to visitors on Sunday but as a knock-on effect traffic around the city centre ground to a halt as shoppers made their way in during one of the busiest weekends of the year. Alex Houston, Network Operations Manager for NIE Networks, said his team had been dealing with over 900 faults across the network as a result of storm damage. “Our teams will be working to restore customers as quickly as they can,” he said. “We estimate that the vast majority will be restored by Monday evening however there is the potential that small pockets will remain off supply into Tuesday.” Adding to the power problems, electricity generation was temporarily suspended at Ballylumford, one of Northern Ireland’s main power stations, after the natural gas-fired power station reported structural damage to one of its smaller chimneys. The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said 1,336 incidents were reported on our roads, over 1,000 of which were caused by fallen trees and branches Essential travel only was advised on Saturday and there were several road traffic accidents, one resulting in a Translink driver needing hospital treatment as his double decker bus left the road near Belfast International Airport. A substantial number of road closures remain in place, and road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance, including in Lurgan where a large tree came down to block Cottage Road. Property owner John O’Donnell said a specialist tree surgeon will be needed to remove the fallen tree. Chainsaws were also needed across roads in Belfast, including along the Falls Road, to help remove fallen debris and make them passable again. At one point on Saturday morning there were no trains running in Northern Ireland but journeys have now resumed, with knock-on delays. Bus services, flights and ferries were also affected with many travellers seeing weekend plans cancelled. All six Irish Premiership games scheduled for Saturday were called off, with late postponements leaving fans in an “appalling situation”, according to Communities Minister Gordon Lyons. The strongest gusts on Saturday included 78mph at Orlock Head, Co Down; 71mph at Killowen, Co Down; and 68mph at Magilligan, Co Londonderry NIE Networks is now facing a challenge to restore power to affected homes and businesses. Mr Houston added: “At this stage we have worked through a lot of the faults which impact on larger numbers of customers and are now moving towards those faults where small numbers are affected. “The public are reminded to stay clear of any damaged electricity equipment, keep children and animals away and to report any incidents of damage immediately to the NIE Networks Customer Helpline on 03457 643 643.” On Sunday afternoon, NIE Networks manned community assistance centres at several locations around Northern Ireland to provide a warm place for those affected to stay warm.. Simon Grant travelled from Newry to help out at Cookstown Leisure Centre. “We’re here to provide a service and reassure people that NIE is doing all it can to have power restored as quickly as possible, and that we are in constant contact with all the relevant authorities to make sure that happens,” he said. Cookstown resident Thomas McDonald, who has been without power at home since the early hours of Saturday morning, said the assistance centre was welcome, but added that he had only found out about it from a neighbour who hadn’t lost power. “With no internet and no social media there will be a lot of people who maybe needed the assistance but didn’t know it was available,” he said. “That shows just how vital it is to get the supplies restored as quickly as possible. “I’m fortunate enough to have been able to take the family out for breakfast and dinner. “I have an office in the town with a kitchen, so we went there for breakfast this morning (Sunday) but some will be sitting at home alone in the cold, with no television, no heating and isolated.” On Sunday morning around 60 homes in the immediate Cookstown area remained affected, though that number had been reduced to single figures by Sunday afternoon as NIE worked overnight to restore the supply. Members of the public have been asked to check in on relatives, friends and neighbours who may require further support and to also ensure that their power cut has been reported. Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd thanked the multi-agency staff “who have once again risen to the challenge and have worked together very effectively to keep the public safe”. “When those who could were staying indoors, teams from my department were outside working in the atrocious weather conditions to keep people safe. Infrastructure staff were out on the ground all weekend monitoring river levels and removing accumulated material as well as clearing debris and trees off the roads to get all major routes open. I want to thank and pay tribute to them for doing so,” he said. “I also want to commend all of the emergency services who have been to the forefront of the weekend’s operation keeping people safe in very difficult conditions. Thank you also to the Community Resilience Groups who were kept up to date with advance notice of severe weather warnings so that they were prepared and ready to respond in their communities. We will continue to work with other agencies as the clear up continues.” NIE Networks will open community assistance centres tomorrow from noon-2pm and 5-7pm to offer assistance to those still without power:

Gary Neville has explained why Arsenal should be feeling the pressure as Manchester City ’s crisis continues. The Premier League champions are in a state of disarray, having lost five consecutive matches. Pep Guardiola’s side were thrashed 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday, with the City boss admitting his side are “fragile” defensively. This is an unprecedented run of poor form for Guardiola and leaves City way off the pace in the Premier League title race. Liverpool lead the way by eight points and could increase that to 11 should they beat the champions at Anfield next weekend. The Gunners, meanwhile, are now only a point behind City, albeit trail Liverpool by some distance too. Still, Mikel Arteta’s side ended their four-game run without a victory by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday. Neville has backed Arsenal to win the League this season and believes the pressure to capitalise on City’s crisis is on them. While Liverpool look favourites for the title, Neville argues that the fact Arne Slot’s side were considered relative outsiders before a ball was kicked this season gives them something of a free-hit. Arsenal, of course, have run City lose in the title race over the past two seasons having emerged as a genuine contender – largely in the place of Liverpool. Neville believes the north London side will be bitterly disappointed if they cannot be the side who capitalise on a potentially fallow year for City. “This feels different,” he said of City’s poor run. “This feels like if you’re Arsenal, if you’re Liverpool – who I think are the two genuine teams that can win the title other than Manchester City – you must not get carried away but feel ‘hang on a minute, there’s no excuses here now’. “I’m looking more at Arsenal with that statement, really. I think anyone at the start of the season who would have said Arne Slot would come in and do what he’s done, I would have thought ‘No, that’s not quite going to happen.’ “This was Arsenal’s season if it wasn’t going to be City’s. So I think the pressure is really on Arsenal now to step up and go for it. They’ve had a good start with the 3-0 [win over Forest].”In conclusion, the stories of Li Xiang, Wang Sicong, and Wang Jianlin highlight the complexities of parenting in the public eye, the role of privilege in shaping one's upbringing, and the debates surrounding celebrity families and their choices. While some see the gift of luxury cars for driving lessons as excessive and out of touch with reality, others view it as a symbol of parental love, support, and the desire to give their children the best that life has to offer. Whether these gifts are seen as extravagant indulgences or thoughtful gestures, one thing is certain – the journey towards independence and responsibility is a universal experience that transcends wealth and fame.DirecTV extends its agreement as title sponsor of the Holiday Bowl SAN DIEGO (AP) — Sports San Diego announced Thursday that DirecTV has extended its agreement as title sponsor of the Holiday Bowl.
