Watson has been limited to just 19 games in three seasons because of an NFL suspension and injuries with the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract in 2022. The restructuring allows the team to spread out the salary-cap hit after the 2026 season, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team does not disclose contract specifics. The 29-year-old Watson has two years remaining on his contract with an average of $46 million a year. The move to restructure his deal will not preclude the Browns from adding talent at the quarterback position in 2025, the person said. Watson played in only seven games this season before suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. He's 9-10 as a starter with Cleveland. The Browns (3-12) have been a major disappointment this season after making it to the playoffs a year ago behind Joe Flacco, who was signed as a free agent after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Watson had surgery in October and is expected to make a full recovery. While the team hasn't disclosed its plans at quarterback, it's assumed Watson will be in the mix to be the starter next season. It's also possible the Browns will draft a quarterback in the first round. The team hasn't had a first-round pick the past three years after trading three to the Houston Texans to acquire Watson, who was once considered one of the league's elite QBs. Local lawmaker’s proposed flag-planting bill causes stir on social mediaThe Labour MP behind the assisted dying bill has said she has no doubts “whatsoever” about her legislation, rejecting claims it could lead to a slippery slope. Issuing a last-minute broadcast intervention to persuade MPs to legalise assisted dying, Kim Leadbeater rejected claims from her own government ministers that the bill is not sufficiently watertight. She told Sky News: “I don’t have any doubts whatsoever. I wouldn’t put the Bill forward if I did. “What I’m very clear about is we have got people now who the law is failing. We have got people taking their own lives. “We have got families losing loved ones in very harrowing circumstances and we have got people having very painful deaths ... so there is a very clear problem that needs to be solved. “By creating a legal framework, we will improve the situation.” MPs will vote on the Bill this coming Friday, with the party whips taking a back seat and allowing members of parliament to vote however they want. It’s not known how the vote will go, with 64 Labour MPs currently going on the record in favour of the change, 33 against. The Cabinet itself remains divided, despite the Cabinet Secretary asking members not to get actively involved in the debate. 14 members of the Cabinet, including the Prime Minister, are thought to be supportive, while 9 are expected to vote it down. Yesterday the Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall reiterated her support for Assisted Dying, insisting that the safeguards in the Bill “are much stronger” than the last time it was voted on in 2015. She argued: “I believe in giving people as much power, say and control as possible over the things that matter to them most”. “I believe the Bill has the right safeguards to make sure that can be done properly.” Ms Kendall rejected arguments against assisted dying by both the Health Secretary Wes Streeting and the Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, the latter of whom recently told constituents that the safeguards in the Bill are “particularly weak”. She insisted the Bill is very clear it requires someone contemplating assisted dying to be terminally ill, to have two independent doctors agree they are of sound mind and are not under pressure, and a high court judge. In an astonishing intervention this weekend, the Justice Secretary blasted the legislation as a “state death service”, warning constituents she is “profoundly concerned” in a letter to her Birmingham constituents. She argued that recent scandals in the public sector, including Hillsborough, infected blood and the Post Office Horizon affair, should act as a reminder that the State and those acting on its behalf “are not always benign”. She continued: “I have always held the view that, for this reason, the state should serve a clear role. It should protect and preserve life, not take it away. The state should never offer death as a service.” “It cannot be overstated what a profound shift in our culture assisted suicide will herald. In my view, the greatest risk of all is the pressure the elderly, vulnerable, sick or disabled may place upon themselves. This weekend Gordon Brown became the latest senior Labour figure to oppose the Bill, saying the death of his newborn daughter in 2002 convinced him of the “value and imperative of good end-of-life care”. He argued that the debate has been too quick given the “profound ethical and practical issues” at stake. Ms Kendall argued people will “always disagree” over assisted dying, and that the core issue is about the “right to choose”. She insisted the debate is “much bigger” than the Westminster soap opera of which side each Cabinet Minister is on, arguing it’s essential for society to have a debate about the fact many people will experience “longer deaths”. Senior Conservative Kevin Hollinrake also came out yesterday [SUN] to back the Bill, saying he wishes the choice had been available when his mother passed away in “very difficult circumstances”. He also argued that the right checks and balances are in the Bill, insisting: “We’re not oblivious to the concerns that people raise, things like coercion”. “But I think people should have the right to choose. You should have dominion over your body and your soul. So, I think it’s really important that people are given that choice, both in Parliament, of course, the vote on Friday, but, ultimately, the decision for people to end their life in this way.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — A person accused of accosting U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in a Capitol Office building pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to a misdemeanor assault charge. Witnesses told police that James McIntyre, 33, of Chicago, shook Mace's hand in an “exaggerated, aggressive” manner after approaching the South Carolina Republican in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday evening, according to a police affidavit. Mace, who is identified only by her initials in a court filing, posted a string of social media messages about the incident. She said she was “physically accosted” at the Capitol, and she thanked President-elect Donald Trump for calling her Wednesday morning to check on her condition. “I’m going to be fine just as soon as the pain and soreness subside,” Mace wrote. Mace declined to be treated by a paramedic after her encounter with McIntyre, who was arrested Tuesday by the Capitol Police, the affidavit says. Mace told police that McIntyre said, “Trans youth serve advocacy,” while shaking her hand. Last month, Mace proposed a resolution that would prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” Mace said the bill is aimed specifically at Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride — the first transgender person to be elected to Congress. A magistrate judge ordered McIntyre’s release after an arraignment in Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Efforts to reach an attorney for McIntyre weren't immediately successful.LOS ANGELES — President-elect Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations and tougher immigration restrictions is deepening mistrust of the health care system among California’s immigrants and clouding the future for providers serving the state’s most impoverished residents. At the same time, immigrants living illegally in Southern California told KFF Health News they thought the economy would improve and their incomes might increase under Trump, and for some that outweighed concerns about health care. Community health workers say fear of deportation is already affecting participation in Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program for low-income residents, which was regardless of residency status over the past several years. That could undercut the state’s progress in reducing the uninsured rate, which reached a record low of 6.4% last year. Immigrants lacking legal residency have long worried that participation in government programs could make them targets, and Trump’s election has compounded those concerns, community advocates say. The incoming Trump administration is also expected to target Medicaid with , which activists worry could threaten the Medi-Cal expansion and kneecap efforts to under Covered California to all immigrants. “The fear alone has so many consequences to the health of our communities,” said , director of policy with the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California. “This is, as they say, not their first rodeo. They understand how the system works. I think this machine is going to be, unfortunately, a lot more harmful to our communities.” Alongside such worries, though, is a strain of optimism that Trump might be a boon to the economy, according to interviews with immigrants in Los Angeles whom health care workers were soliciting to sign up for Medi-Cal. Since Election Day, community health worker Yanet Martinez said, people are more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” Martinez said. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Clinics and community health workers encourage immigrants to enroll for health coverage through Medi-Cal and Covered California. But workers have noticed that fear of deportation has chilled participation. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Community health workers like Yanet Martinez encourage people to enroll for health benefits. But many California immigrants fear that using subsidized services could hurt their chances of obtaining legal residency. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Since Election Day, community health worker Yanet Martinez said, people are more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” Martinez said. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Selvin, 39, who, like others interviewed for this article, asked to be identified by only his first name because he’s living here without legal permission, said that even though he believes Trump dislikes people like him, he thinks the new administration could help boost his hours at the food processing facility where he works packing noodles. “I do see how he could improve the economy. From that perspective, I think it’s good that he won.” He became eligible for Medi-Cal this year but decided not to enroll, worrying it could jeopardize his chances of changing his immigration status. “I’ve thought about it,” Selvin said, but “I feel like it could end up hurting me. I won’t deny that, obviously, I’d like to benefit — get my teeth fixed, a physical checkup.” But fear holds him back, he said, and he hasn’t seen a doctor in nine years. It’s not Trump’s mass deportation plan in particular that’s scaring him off, though. “If I’m not committing any crimes or getting a DUI, I think I won’t get deported,” Selvin said. Petrona, 55, came from El Salvador seeking asylum and enrolled in Medi-Cal last year. She said that if her health insurance benefits were cut, she wouldn’t be able to afford her visits to the dentist. A street food vendor, she hears often about Trump’s deportation plan, but she said it will be the criminals the new president pushes out. “I’ve heard people say he’s going to get rid of everyone who’s stealing.” Although she’s afraid she could be deported, she’s also hopeful about Trump. “He says he’s going to give a lot of work to Hispanics because Latinos are the ones who work the hardest,” she said. “That’s good, more work for us, the ones who came here to work.” Newly elected Republican Assembly member Jeff Gonzalez, who flipped a seat long held by Democrats in the Latino-heavy desert region in the southeastern part of the state, said his constituents were anxious to see a new economic direction. “They’re just really kind of fed up with the status quo in California,” Gonzalez said. “People on the ground are saying, ‘I’m hopeful,’ because now we have a different perspective. We have a businessperson who is looking at the very things that we are looking at, which is the price of eggs, the price of gas, the safety.” Related Articles Gonzalez said he’s not going to comment about potential Medicaid cuts, because Trump has not made any official announcement. Unlike most in his party, Gonzalez said he supports the extension of health care services to . Health care providers said they are facing a twin challenge of hesitancy among those they are supposed to serve and the threat of major cuts to Medicaid, the federal program that provides over 60% of the funding for Medi-Cal. Health providers and policy researchers say a loss in federal contributions could lead the state to roll back or downsize some programs, including the expansion to cover those without legal authorization. California and Oregon are the only states that offer comprehensive health insurance to all income-eligible immigrants regardless of status. About 1.5 million people without authorization have enrolled in California, at a cost of over $6 billion a year to state taxpayers. “Everyone wants to put these types of services on the chopping block, which is really unfair,” said state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, a Democrat and chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. “We will do everything we can to ensure that we prioritize this.” Sen. Gonzalez said it will be challenging to expand programs such as Covered California, the state’s health insurance marketplace, for which immigrants lacking permanent legal status are not eligible. A big concern for immigrants and their advocates is that Trump could reinstate changes to the which can deny green cards or visas based on the use of government benefits. “President Trump’s mass deportation plan will end the financial drain posed by illegal immigrants on our healthcare system, and ensure that our country can care for American citizens who rely on Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,” Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to KFF Health News. During his first term, in 2019, Trump broadened the policy to include the use of Medicaid, as well as housing and nutrition subsidies. The Biden administration rescinded the change in 2021. KFF, a health information nonprofit that includes KFF Health News, found than people born in the United States. And about 1 in 4 likely undocumented immigrant adults said they have avoided applying for assistance with health care, food, and housing because of immigration-related fears, according to a . Another uncertainty is the fate of the Affordable Care Act, which was opened in November to immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and are protected by the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals program. If DACA eligibility for the act’s plans, or even the act itself, were to be reversed under Trump, that would leave roughly 40,000 California DACA recipients, and about , without access to subsidized health insurance. On Dec. 9, a federal court in North Dakota issued blocking DACA recipients from accessing Affordable Care Act health plans in that had challenged the Biden administration’s rule. Clinics and community health workers are encouraging people to continue enrolling in health benefits. But amid the push to spread the message, the chilling effects are already apparent up and down the state. community health worker Yanet Martinez said, asking residents whether they had Medi-Cal as she walked down Pico Boulevard recently in a Los Angeles neighborhood with many Salvadorans. she shouted, offering help to sign up, free of charge. said one young woman, responding with a no thanks. She shrugged her shoulders and averted her eyes under a cap that covered her from the late-morning sun. Since Election Day, Martinez said, people have been more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” she said. “They don’t want anything to do with it.”
By Khari A. Thompson Jaylen Brown was talking about magic during practice at the Auerbach Center on Wednesday, and it wasn’t the kind that has to do with a basketball team from Orlando. Brown recently checked out Harry Potter: The Exhibition at the Cambridgeside Galleria mall. The exhibit, which allows fans of the movie series to relive some of their favorite scenes with authentic props, costumes, and cutting-edge technology, was a “top-tier” experience, Brown said. The series’ first film, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” was released in 2001, when Brown was five years old. He was a teenager when the two-part film finale “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” came out. Brown said he has read four of the seven books in the series, and has seen all of the movies. “I was a big fan,” Brown said. “I love to share with my younger nieces and nephews coming up and pass along the same joy that I had. It was pretty cool.” Brown said he enjoyed seeing the four houses from the magical school Hogwarts — Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin — during the exhibit. If Brown had to be sorted into one of the houses, he said, it would be Slytherin. Slytherin students are known for their cunning, ambition, pride, and shrewdness; not unlike the Celtics, the primary color that represents the house is green. Most of the series’ main antagonists were in the Slytherin house. Potter was in the rival Gryffindor house. “I’m house Slytherin by the way,” Brown said. “You don’t see it? Nah. Team Slytherin.” Brown, who won his first NBA championship with the Celtics last year, said that he would have led Slytherin to a title in quidditch, the fictional sport that Potter competed in during the series. “I would have been a Quidditch All-American for sure,” Brown said. “Would have helped lead our team to a championship.” Brown’s performance brand, 741, is scheduled to release new apparel products at 7:41 p.m. on Wednesday according to its website. Brown posted a sneak-peek on X on Tuesday. “I think people kind of understand the theme that I’m going for now that they see the shoes and the clothes all coming together,” Brown said. “I love science fiction, I love futurism so I thought to express myself creatively through that would be cool and also bring a new spark back to the design. Looking forward to just building off of that over the years.” Future of performance is here #741 pic.twitter.com/ZvcTW4Nzra Brown said launching the brand has been “a joy.” The reigning NBA Finals MVP has appreciated flexibility he has to take a hands on approach. “It’s almost like you’re getting your music directly from the musician instead of the labels,” Brown said. “You’re getting it straight from the artist. I designed everything, I’ve been a part of everything. “So if you guys support, you’re supporting independence, creativity, and ownership. It’s been fun. I look forward to doing a lot of stuff, integrating science, integrating technology also into it so kids can learn as well as being a part of the creative process.” Brown has been getting to the free-throw line more than he ever has this season. He’s averaging a career-high 6.6 free-throw attempts per game. He’s averaging more made free-throws per game (5.1) this season than his career average in attempts (3.8). “I’m stronger, I’m more physical, I’m faster, so I’ve been using my body. I’ve been screening better and getting to the paint,” he said. “That’s led to me shooting a lot more free-throws. We have a lot of 3-point shooters on our team so I try to be the guy that’s getting into the paint, getting a paint touch before we get a three.” So far, he’s shooting 76.2 percent from the charity stripe, a number that he has only topped once over the course of a full season. “Just trying to improve in all facets of my game,” Brown said. “Just all my weaknesses and things that people perceive as weaknesses and improve on them. Keep getting better and better.” Khari A. Thompson Khari Thompson covers professional sports for Boston.com. The project, which initially had wide support from the government, parliament, the business community and centre and right-wing parties – the Swiss People’s Party and the Radical-Liberal Party – would have involved widening or building new roads at six key points on the country’s motorway system, notably near Bern, and on a busy stretch between Geneva and Lausanne. The arguments of environmental groups and parties on the left (the Social Democratic Party and the Green Party), who criticised the cost (CHF5 billion) of the project while questioning its effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion, probably carried more weight with voters. Supporters of the project had argued that the expansion plan would help solve traffic jams on the outskirts of the big Swiss cities. Sleuths from Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) arrested a fraudster from Chittigarh in Rajasthan for a trading fraud in which a victim lost over Rs 8.14 crore. Police had started investigations based on a complaint received from the trader, a resident of Banjara Hills, filed on October 21. The trader stated that he was induced to join a trading-related WhatsApp group and later persuaded to invest in block trades and IPOs through a fraudulent application. Since August, the victim had transferred Rs 8,14,48,000 to accounts linked to the scam, Shikha Goel, TGCSB director, said in a press release on Sunday. After releasing the fraud the victim reported to the state cybercrime helpline. “We formed special teams and identified the accused through his server as Sharvan Kumar Sharma alias Shravan Kumar Sharma (43) and arrested him from his house in Rajasthan,” Shikha said. During interrogation the accused Sharma revealed that he used to pose as a representative of reputed trading firms and target victims through social media platforms Once the victims join, Sharma and his accomplices conduct online sessions to explain trading strategies and promote fake stock broking applications, she said. They persuade victims to invest in high-yield schemes, such as IPOs and block trades, by promising guaranteed allotments through institutional investor routes, claiming exclusivity and high returns. When victims attempt to withdraw funds, the app displays errors or imposes additional demands such as regulatory fees, inspection charges, or penalties for transaction irregularities. Investigations are underway to uncover the entire network involved in the fraudulent activities. Meanwhile, the bureau has urged the public to remain vigilant against online financial frauds and avoid clicking on unsolicited links or joining unverified investment groups on social media platforms.
