By Granville County Public Schools OXFORD — A team from J.F. Webb High School took home the top prize of $10,000 during Altec’s first-ever Innovation Challenge at the Granville County Expo Center on Nov. 22. The competition combines science, technology and engineering through a student-driven, project-based approach. Participating student teams were asked to present their solution addressing real-world problems using an innovative approach to benefit their school or community. The winners earned $10,000 for their school to implement their project idea — slated to begin in the spring of 2025. Upon extending an invitation for all county high schools to participate, three teams from two schools competed in this year’s competition, including two teams from Granville Central and one team from JFWHS. Around 15 students participated. The Altec Innovation Challenge began earlier this fall, with individual students coming together to create teams. Each team had a faculty sponsor from their school and was also paired with engineers from Altec to help mentor and guide them in developing their plans. The event concluded with final presentations to a panel of judges comprised of local business, education and community leaders. After much deliberation, the students from JFWHS emerged as the winners. Winning the top prize, Claudio Cheluca, Kaylee Hernandez, Jayden Kufahl, Iyy’Anna Lester, Madison Ragland, Isaiah Terry and Rileigh Warner impressed the judges with their ambitious proposal to create a state-of-the-art maker space at their school. This creative hub will feature innovative tools and technologies, including programmable robotic arms, 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality headsets, a high-powered Lenovo computer, a sewing machine and more. Located near the school’s media center, the maker space will be accessible to all students, fostering innovation and hands-on learning opportunities. The money awarded from Altec will fund the purchase of these tools, bringing the team’s vision to life and empowering JFWHS students for years to come. Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborne, who was on hand to hear the winning announcement, offered some remarks. “I am incredibly proud of all the students who participated in this exciting event. It was an amazing opportunity for them to develop the critical skills they need to be competitive and successful in their next steps in finding careers,” Winborne said. “Plus, they had so much fun. Working in teams to solve real-world problems is very empowering for them. I am grateful to our friends at Altec for making this happen. They are a top-notch organization!” Pierre Messier, general manager at Altec’s Creedmoor manufacturing facility, said the event displayed the wealth of talent among local students and served as a celebration of STEM-based career pathways. “This challenge truly embraces innovative thinking and reinforces the significance of STEM pathways for today’s students,” Messier said. “Seeing the dedication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving abilities of these students has been inspiring and highlights the promising future ahead for our community and industry. The Prince George Spruce Kings have dipped into the Ontario talent pool. The Kings have signed 20-year-old forward Nicholas Papineau to spice up the offence. Papineau, a five-foot-10, 160-pound native of Ottawa from Gatineau, Que., had nine goals and 26 points in 21 games this season in the Central Canadian Hockey League with the Nepean Raiders. In 124 games over the past 2 1⁄2 seasons with the Raiders he scored 35 goals and had 40 assists for 75 points. “Nicolas is a veteran player who was the captain of his team,” said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. “He possesses great speed and good offensive abilities. We’re excited to have him. The most recent iOS 18.2 RC (release candidate) that was initially experienced by beta users was the version that gave the world this so-called "Natural Language," and Apple meant for it to help users simplify their search. According to , users may take advantage of using 'natural language,' a.k.a. how a person normally speaks, when searching for something on Cupertino's streaming apps. This is available via Apple Music and Apple TV, and Apple said in its release notes that users may now describe or reiterate what they are searching for on these platforms without the need to be more specific on their queries. "Natural language search in Apple Music and Apple TV app lets you describe what you're looking for using any combination of categories like genres, moods, actors, decades, and more," said Apple. While it is not exactly directly related to Apple Intelligence, it is a feature that is known to be one of the biggest advantages of AI-powered experiences over regular search bars or AI assistants on smartphones. While specifying a query will help users narrow down their search more, using natural language in finding music or video content would be a great place to start, especially if one is unfamiliar with the title, artist, or genre. On the other hand, natural language search is also available on the newly revamped Siri, and users may command the chatbot to find songs or videos based on what they want to see or find, with the AI assistant fulfilling their requests. However, there is a small caveat for iOS 18.2's natural language capabilities as it can only understand user input in English for now, but the company said that it is planning to bring more language support to accommodate more future experiences via this technology. A recent EY-Nasscom report notes that 99% of Indian B2B SaaS companies have embraced deeptech innovations, mostly in AI. Considerable resources to initiate deeptech programmes in India are being leveraged, focusing particularly on AI and IoT technologies to future-proof businesses. In the last five years, Indian entrepreneurs filed more than 1,400 patents in deeptech. Across startups, the number of patents granted grew 8x, from 4,226 in 2013-14 to 34,134 in 2022-23, while patent applications more than doubled in the same period, crossing 1 lakh filings last year. India now has the third-largest startup ecosystem, with more than 1 lakh startups and nearly 120 unicorns, compared to 442 startups and 4 unicorns in 2016. Reforms such as GST, IBC, asset monetisation, labour law reforms and Startup India have brought regulatory clarity. By end-2023, GoI had done away with more than 25,000 compliances, and repealed more than 1,400 laws. Creditable improvements in global rankings in Logistics Performance Index (38th in 2023 vs 54th in 2014), and WIPO's Global Innovation Index rankings (39th in 2023 from 81st in 2014) underscore the progress made. Advantages like our human capital, massive data economy, top-notch digital public infrastructure and the ongoing 5G and imminent 6G rollouts will accelerate data-driven innovation.
