Former President Jimmy Carter , who devoted his life after the presidency to humanitarian efforts, died Sunday at 100. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting social and economic development. For more than 35 years, Carter and wife Rosalynn volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, joining “Habitat builds” in the United States and abroad. They also founded the Carter Center , committing to human rights and to alleviating human suffering. Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer from Georgia, served one term in the White House before losing the 1980 presidential election to Ronald Reagan. Carter served as a naval officer before entering politics he was elected governor of Georgia in 1970. Here are a few of the former president’s memorable quotes. On war and peace “War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children. The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices.” – Nobel lecture on Dec. 10, 2002, after winning the Nobel Peace Prize On government watchdogs “Thoughtful criticism and close scrutiny of all government officials by the press and the public are an important part of our democratic society.” – Presidential farewell address on Jan. 14, 1981 Peacemaker, not policeman “We have no desire to be the world's policeman. But America does want to be the world's peacemaker.” – 1979 State of the Union address On marijuana decriminalization "Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marijuana in private for personal use. We can, and should, continue to discourage the use of marijuana, but this can be done without defining the smoker as a criminal." – 1977 message to Congress about drug abuse On Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo “Since 2001, the U.S. government has abandoned its role as a champion of human rights and has perpetrated terrible and illegal abuses in prisons in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, sent prisoners secretly to other nations to be tortured, denied the applicability of the Geneva Convention restraints, and severely restricted time-honored civil liberties within our own country. Certain political leaders of other nations, who are inclined to perpetrate human rights abuses to quiet dissenting voices and were previously restrained by positive influence from Washington, now feel free to emulate or exceed the abuses approved by American leaders.” – 2007 book, "Beyond the White House: Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope" On human rights “I realize that violence is not more prevalent today than in previous periods of human history, but there is a difference. We have seen visionary standards adopted by the global community that espouse peace and human rights, and the globalization of information ensures that the violation of these principles of nonviolence by a powerful and admired democracy tends to resonate throughout the world community. We should have advanced much further in the realization of women's rights, given these international commitments to peace and the rule of law.” – 2014 book, "A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power" On children and gun violence “Every day in the United States, seventeen children are killed by gunfire. That’s about 6,000 children each year who are killed by guns, as compared, for example, with about 3,000 a year who died at the height of the polio epidemic of the 1950s. We rose up as a society to fight against polio. Why do we not act more forcefully to halt today’s even greater scourge?” – 1997 book, "Sources of Strength: Meditations on Scripture for a Living Faith" On drugs and the justice system "I don't think there's any doubt that the drug culture has shaped at least one major change, and that is the treatment of prisoners. When I was governor, I competed with other progressive Southern governors in who could reduce our prison population the most. ... But now, with the increase of the drug culture, politicians brag about how many prisons they’ve built. We have a massive increase in prison occupancy, and the punishment for drug use has become the pre-eminent basis for overloading our courts and prisons." – 2007 Rolling Stone interview
Belgrade to be transformed into 'world’s largest playground' for Expo 2027, Serbian ambassador says Published: 19 Dec. 2024, 07:00 LIM JEONG-WON [email protected] Serbian Ambassador to Seoul Nemanja Grbic sits for an interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily at the Serbian Embassy in Jung District, central Seoul, on Dec. 12. [PARK SANG-MOON] The Expo 2027 in Belgrade, themed “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” will transform the city into the “world’s largest playground,” inviting the global community, including and especially Korea, to participate, Serbian Ambassador to Seoul Nemanja Grbic said in a recent interview. “The idea behind Expo 2027 in Belgrade is to transform the city into the world’s largest playground, celebrating human resilience through the power of play,” said Grbic in an interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily at the Serbian Embassy in Jung District, central Seoul on Thursday. “In these challenging times, I believe a little more play is exactly what we need. Therefore, I would like to extend a warm invitation to Korea to join this event and showcase the beauty of its contemporary culture and creativity to the world.” Korean expertise in green technologies, smart city development and hospitality management particularly presents valuable opportunities for collaboration, Grbic emphasized. The Bureau International des Expositions elected Serbia as the host country of Specialised Expo 2027 in 2023. With approximately 120 participating countries expected at the Expo 2027 in Belgrade, the event is set to welcome around 6 million visitors to the Serbian capital, and the embassy most heartily welcomes Koreans to the city. Meanwhile, ongoing Korea-Serbia EPA negotiations signal a commitment to deepening trade ties and could further enhance cooperation and mutual benefits for both countries, the ambassador said. Grbic also outlined specific agendas for the Expo 2027, sectors in which Belgrade seeks partnerships with Seoul, and heightening bilateral relations between Korea and Serbia. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity. Expo 2027's theme, "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All," highlights Serbia's cultural richness. How does Serbia plan to reflect this theme in the pavilions and programming, and what unique contributions can Korean culture make to this vision? Serbia’s theme, "Play for Humanity," is a celebration of the transformative power of play through sports and music. This theme will be embodied in three thematic pavilions: Power of Play, Play for Progress, and Play Together. Each pavilion offers interactive exhibits, encourages playful exploration, and fosters collaboration through sports and music. For instance, the Play Together pavilion will create a platform for global cultural exchanges, where Korean culture, with its vibrant K-pop, traditional music and taekwondo, can make a significant impact. By integrating Korean performances, workshops and collaborative projects, Serbia envisions a dynamic fusion of cultures that embodies the spirit of unity and creativity. With an expected influx of 6 million tourists, how is Serbia preparing its infrastructure and economy to maximize the benefits of Expo 2027? Are there specific sectors, such as tourism or tech, where Serbia seeks partnerships with Korea? The 6 million forecast is optimistic, I know, but in Serbia, we are always optimistic. To that goal, we have undertaken major upgrades in infrastructure, including transportation and accommodations. With Belgrade as the hub, enhancements include the development of the EXPO Village, improved road networks like E-70 and E-75, and expansions at Nikola Tesla Airport. The tourism sector will see new hotels and recreational spaces to meet visitor demand. Serbia seeks partnerships in sectors such as sustainable tourism, technology integration for smart infrastructure, and digital innovation. Korean expertise in green technologies, smart city development and hospitality management presents a valuable opportunity for collaboration. Expo 2027 was presented as a "Green Agenda" at COP29. What specific sustainability goals does Serbia aim to achieve during the Expo, and how can Korea's green technologies play a role? Serbia’s "Green Agenda" for Expo 2027 prioritizes sustainability, focusing on renewable energy, waste management and environmentally friendly transportation. Smart urban interventions such as Playground Earth will highlight sustainable living practices. Serbia aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the event through renewable energy sources and advanced waste recycling systems. Notably, Hyundai Engineering recently secured a 2 trillion won ($1.39 billion) contract to construct a 1.2GW solar power plant with an energy storage system in Serbia — the largest overseas solar project ever won by a Korean construction company. This groundbreaking collaboration is expected to significantly enhance Serbia’s renewable energy infrastructure and showcases the potential for Korean green technologies to play a pivotal role in Expo 2027’s sustainability goals. With over 100 countries expected to participate, how is Serbia promoting cross-cultural exchange? Are there plans for joint cultural projects with Korea during or before the Expo? While specific cultural projects have not been finalized, potential collaborations could include hosting K-pop performances, traditional Korean arts exhibitions and taekwondo demonstrations alongside Serbian folklore, literature and music. Additionally, I believe there is room for pre-Expo events in Korea to strengthen ties and generate enthusiasm for the Expo. Such initiatives would highlight shared values of creativity, resilience and collaboration, fostering a deeper understanding between the two nations. Major upgrades in transportation and facilities are underway for the Expo. What progress has been made, and what role do international collaborations, including with Korea, play in these developments? Serbia has made significant progress in upgrading its transportation and facilities, including new road and railroad networks, improved public transport and the development of the EXPO Village. International collaborations have been instrumental, and Serbia welcomes Korean expertise in infrastructure development. Korea’s advanced transport systems and construction technologies could enhance Serbia’s capabilities, ensuring the successful execution of the Expo and long-term benefits for regional connectivity. Serbia has highlighted innovation in sports and music as part of the Expo theme. Could you elaborate on Serbia's strategies to integrate these sectors with cutting-edge technology, and what lessons or support from Korea could be beneficial? Serbia plans to integrate sports and music with cutting-edge technology through initiatives like hybrid sports pitches and interactive music stages. These will incorporate augmented reality, AI and immersive experiences to enhance visitor engagement. Korea’s expertise in technology-driven entertainment and innovations in Esports can provide valuable insights. Collaborative projects, such as developing smart sports arenas and virtual music platforms, would enrich the Expo experience. Serbia is leveraging Air Serbia to promote the Expo internationally. How does the government plan to raise awareness in Korea, and are there any specific events or campaigns planned? Air Serbia has recently opened a representative office in Seoul, reflecting its growing focus on enhancing connections between Serbia and Asia. This expansion includes the introduction of a new direct route between Belgrade and Shanghai starting January 2024, alongside existing routes to Tianjin and Guangzhou. These developments strengthen connectivity and provide significant opportunities for business and tourism. While specific campaigns targeting Korea may not be in place, these initiatives naturally position Serbia as an attractive destination and enhance cultural and economic exchanges in the lead-up to the Expo. As the first Expo in the Western Balkans, how does Serbia envision the event influencing regional development and cooperation? Could Korea play a role in supporting this regional impact? As the first Expo in the Western Balkans, Serbia aims to position the region as a hub for innovation and cultural exchange. The event will foster regional development through infrastructure investments, tourism growth and cross-border collaboration. Serbia’s recent diplomatic achievements reflect its growing importance on the global stage, as highlighted by high-profile visits this year from leaders such as Xi Jinping, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and others. The country’s high growth rate, the second highest in Europe, rich mineral resources and favorable investment climate have made it an attractive partner for global powers. Korea could play a significant role by leveraging its expertise in energy, biomedical technologies and smart city projects. Additionally, the ongoing Korea-Serbia EPA negotiations signal a commitment to deepening trade ties, which could further enhance cooperation and mutual benefits for both nations. The Expo has emphasized engaging children and youth. Are there initiatives targeting Korean students or young professionals to encourage their participation in this global event? Serbia plans to engage children and youth through educational programs, competitions and internships. Initiatives targeting Korean students include collaborative projects with Serbian schools and universities, such as cultural exchanges and innovation challenges. These programs aim to inspire young minds and encourage active participation in shaping the Expo’s vision. What are Serbia’s long-term plans for the infrastructure and partnerships developed for Expo 2027, and how might Korea fit into these future aspirations? Serbia’s long-term plans include transforming Expo infrastructure into lasting assets such as the National Stadium, public spaces and smart urban areas. Among the major infrastructures to be built from scratch, let me point out the new Belgrade Fair, International Forum of Play, residential and hotel zones, national stadium, aquatic center, and EXPO village. Partnerships developed during the Expo will drive ongoing innovation and economic growth. Additionally, the city of Novi Sad has demonstrated its commitment to smart city development, supported by a collaboration between Samsung SDS and KDI. This partnership included a feasibility study for a smart city control system, providing strategic road maps and implementation plans for Novi Sad. Serbia’s broader commitment to renewable energy, green technologies and smart urban solutions creates opportunities for global partnerships and ensures a legacy of innovation and sustainability. New Delhi: Principal Secretary to Prime Minister PK Mishra described late PM Manmohan Singh as a "distinguished leader, eminent economist and a great human being" in his condolence message. My memories of Dr Manmohan Singh date back to the time when he was teaching at the Delhi School of Economics. I was in my MA first year those days. Seeing him among the stalwart professors in that era was reassuring for a student like me, having come from Sambalpur district in Western Odisha." He recalled that highly reputed professors like Amartya Sen, Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri, AM Khusro, KN Raj, Sukhamoy Chakraborty, Dharma Kumar and others were also faculty members at DSE then. "Dr Manmohan Singh had a remarkable ability to explain complex topics in international trade in a way every student could understand, making learning easier for students. He was extremely unassuming and kept a low profile," Mishra said. He stated that his interaction with Dr Singh continued after he joined the IAS. "Later I had the privilege of interacting with him when working as secretary to the National Disaster Management Authority and secretary to Government of India in the agriculture ministry during his tenure as the prime minister. Whenever I met him, I found the same simplicity, sincerity and humility in his demeanour. My heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends during these difficult times," Mishra said. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to continue competing in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship scheduled for later this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by nine current players who are suing the Mountain West Conference to challenge the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Judge Crews referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender” player in his ruling and noted that no defendant disputed that San Jose State rosters a transgender woman volleyball player. He said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting that the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a forfeit in league standings. He also said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 – making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season’s awareness of her identity among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a political campaign year. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. San Jose State is seeded second. The judge's order maintains the seedings and pairings for the tournament. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without providing further details. Crews served as a magistrate judge in Colorado’s U.S. District Court for more than five years before President Joe Biden appointed him to serve as a federal judge in January of this year. Shohei Ohtani made history on Thursday by becoming the first designated hitter in baseball history to win a Most Valuable Player award. The Dodgers' star claimed was a unanimous selection in winning his first National League MVP award, and the second of his career, following his first season in Los Angeles. More news: Dodgers, Red Sox Talking to Same Two Free Agent Starters: Report Ohtani became the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, a feat he accomplished with a historic 6 for 6, three-homer, 10-RBI game Sept. 19 in Miami . He finished with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases while hitting .310 and leading the Dodgers to the World Series. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor finished second in the MVP voting, collecting 23 of the 30 votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America, and Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks finished third. " I think this MVP, I'm just representing the Dodgers ," Ohtani said through his interpreter, Matt Hidaka, after accepting the award live on MLB Network. " It was just a complete team effort. I wouldn't have been able to receive this award if it weren't for my teammates. If my teammates weren't there, if we didn't play as a team, we would not have gotten to the playoffs or won the World Series. I'm representing the team receiving this award." Ohtani was unable to pitch in 2024 while he rehabilitated his right elbow from surgery at the end of the 2023 season. That did not deter him from leading the Dodgers' offense as a DH — first as their number-2 hitter, then out of the leadoff slot for the second half. "The ultimate goal from the beginning was to win a World Series, which we were able to accomplish," Ohtani told the MLB Network panel. Brian Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning, but many social media users have exhibited a morbid indifference or even cheerfulness in reacting to his death. "Of course I would have been happy to send my condolences after the United Healthcare CEO was killed," one person posted in a video on TikTok. "Unfortunately, sympathy requires a prior authorization, and I have to deny that request." One person commented on previous Scripps News reporting saying, "Private health insurance is evil so... this doesn't concern me 1 bit." RELATED STORY | 'Depose,' 'Deny,' 'Defend' reportedly written on shell casings in slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Many other online users posted about their challenging experiences with UnitedHealthcare, including stories of being denied coverage by the provider. The words "deny," "defend" and "depose" were written on ammunition the shooter used, according to law enforcement. Those words caused some on social media to draw a connection to a 2010 book with a similar title, "Delay, Deny, Defend," about insurance companies failing to pay claims. Denial of health insurance claims have been increasing across the board, according to a U.S. Senate Investigative report found by Scripps News. It found UnitedHealthcare's denial rate for post-acute care climbed from almost 11% in 2020 to nearly 23% in 2022, and Humana's denial rate for long-term post-acute care grew by 54% during that same time span. A new survey from The Commonwealth Fund found nearly one in four older U.S. adults spent at least $2,000 out of pocket on health care last year. The online response to Thompson's murder isn't a surprise to Stephan Meier, the chair of the management division at Columbia Business School, given the industry in which the CEO worked. "It's not so surprising if you look at, you know, surveys about what industries are liked or not, are trusted or not, and health insurers are not at the top of that list, to put it mildly," Meier said. There are signs the industry is taking notice of the backlash. Sidhu's letter comes a day after the Congress accused the Centre of insulting Manmohan Singh, the country's first Sikh prime minister, by carrying out his last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat instead of a designated spot that could have become his memorial. "I write to you with profound concern and deep conviction regarding the need to establish a memorial for Dr Manmohan Singh, the 13th Prime Minister of India, at the Raj Ghat complex, a site that symbolizes the glorious tradition of commemorating the legacy of our nation's leaders. "As you are aware, all former Prime Ministers, including (caretaker) Prime Minister like Gulzarilal Nanda, have been accorded memorial to honour their contribution. "These include Shanti Van for Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, Vijay Ghat for Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, Shakti Sthal for Smt. Indira Gandhi, Vir Bhumi For Rajiv Gandhi, and Sadaiv Atal for Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee," Sidhu wrote. "The Raj Ghat complex has been the chosen resting place for all these leaders, reflecting its sanctity as a repository of our democratic legacy," Sidhu wrote. But this tradition was "conspicuously broken" when Manmohan Singh was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat, a site where no other prime minister has been cremated, and no steps have been taken to commemorate his remarkable legacy, Sidhu said. "It is alarming to note that this departure from tradition reeks of visible insecurity and political bias," he alleged in his letter. The establishment of memorials is not a partisan issue but an act of preserving India's glorious history and honouring those who have shaped its destiny, wrote Sidhu. He mentioned that Dr Singh's contribution as an economist, statesman, and leader who guided India through a decade of transformative growth and global integration cannot be ignored. "It is pertinent to mention that even Prime Ministers like P V Narasimha Rao, whose cremation took place outside Delhi, have been honoured with memorials, such as Gyan Bhumi in Hyderabad. Therefore, the inaction regarding Dr Singh's memorial raises questions about the motives behind this omission," he said. Sidhu said honouring leaders with memorials has been an integral part of India's democratic ethos, transcending political differences. "Notable exceptions like V P Singh, who lacks a memorial, have drawn criticism even from his family," he pointed out, while adding "this neglect must not be extended to Dr Manmohan Singh, whose legacy is too significant to be ignored or politicized". Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said the BJP-led Centre had "totally insulted" Singh, a great son of Mother India and the first prime minister from the Sikh community, by performing his last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat. Trump, Biden react to death of former President Jimmy CarterWith the Detroit Lions set to play against the Chicago Bears on Thursday this week, the team released its first injury report on Monday and a total of six players did not take part in practice. The injury report was an estimation, as the Lions only held a walkthrough. The six players who did not take part are cornerback Carlton Davis (knee, thumb), left tackle Taylor Decker (knee), running back David Montgomery (shoulder), wide receiver Kalif Raymond (foot), defensive lineman D.J. Reader (illness) and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (knee). The only player listed on the initial injury report as a full participant was cornerback Terrion Arnold (groin), who missed the Week 12 game against the Indianapolis Colts . The estimated full session puts Arnold on track to return in Week 13. After practice, head coach Dan Campbell addressed the media and revealed that of those aforementioned six players, Decker, Davis and Raymond have a chance to sit out the Thanksgiving contest against Chicago. Dan Campbell says there may be three of the guys listed below who could miss this week: Decker, Davis, Raymond. "Saint is a little banged up," Campbell said. "We'll see how he recovers." Campbell also noted he doesn't think most of the injuries will be long-term issues. After the game on Sunday, Campbell said Raymond was likely to miss time. David Montgomery injury update Raymond, Davis, Decker and Montgomery all exited Sunday's contest due to injury, but Decker was able to return to the game. Montgomery said he could have returned but was held out as a precaution and he expects to suit up on Thursday. Decker was also positive about his outlook . WASHINGTON , Dec. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- NASA continues to advance its campaign to explore more of the Moon than ever before, awarding Firefly Aerospace $179 million to deliver six experiments to the lunar surface. This fourth task order for Firefly will target landing in the Gruithuisen Domes on the near side of the Moon in 2028. As part of the agency's broader Artemis campaign, Firefly will deliver a group of science experiments and technology demonstrations under NASA's CLPS initiative, or Commercial Lunar Payload Services, to these lunar domes, an area of ancient lava flows, to better understand planetary processes and evolution. Through CLPS, NASA is furthering our understanding of the Moon's environment and helping prepare for future human missions to the lunar surface, as part of the agency's Moon to Mars exploration approach. "The CLPS initiative carries out U.S. scientific and technical studies on the surface of the Moon by robot explorers. As NASA prepares for future human exploration of the Moon, the CLPS initiative continues to support a growing lunar economy with American companies," said Joel Kearns , deputy associate administrator for exploration, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters in Washington . "Understanding the formation of the Gruithuisen Domes, as well as the ancient lava flows surrounding the landing site, will help the U.S. answer important questions about the lunar surface." Firefly's first lunar delivery is scheduled to launch no earlier than mid-January 2025 and will land near a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium, on the northeast quadrant of the Moon's near side. Firefly's second lunar mission includes two task orders: a lunar orbit drop-off of a satellite combined with a delivery to the lunar surface on the far side and a delivery of a lunar orbital calibration source, scheduled in 2026. This new delivery in 2028 will send payloads to the Gruithuisen Domes and the nearby Sinus Viscositatus. The Gruithuisen Domes have long been suspected to be formed by a magma rich in silica, similar in composition to granite. Granitic rocks form easily on Earth due to plate tectonics and oceans of water. The Moon lacks these key ingredients, so lunar scientists have been left to wonder how these domes formed and evolved over time. For the first time, as part of this task order, NASA also has contracted to provide "mobility," or roving, for some of the scientific instruments on the lunar surface after landing. This will enable new types of U.S. scientific investigations from CLPS. "Firefly will deliver six instruments to understand the landing site and surrounding vicinity," said Chris Culbert , manager of the CLPS initiative at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston . "These instruments will study geologic processes and lunar regolith, test solar cells, and characterize the neutron radiation environment, supplying invaluable information as NASA works to establish a long-term presence on the Moon." The instruments, collectively expected to be about 215 pounds (97 kilograms) in mass, include: Through the CLPS initiative, NASA purchases lunar landing and surface operations services from American companies. The agency uses CLPS to send scientific instruments and technology demonstrations to advance capabilities for science, exploration, or commercial development of the Moon. By supporting a robust cadence of lunar deliveries, NASA will continue to enable a growing lunar economy while leveraging the entrepreneurial innovation of the commercial space industry. Two upcoming CLPS flights scheduled to launch in early 2025 will deliver NASA payloads to the Moon's near side and south polar region, respectively.
