After the 2024 election, Colorado Democrats fell short of a supermajority in both the House and the Senate but maintained their majority. Republicans won a number of elected positions that Democrats have held, including a few in Weld County. U.S. Rep.-elect Gabe Evans , a Republican, will take Rep. Yadira Caraveo’s seat in Congress as the representative for the 8th Congressional District with 48.9% of the vote. Evans has been selected for the Energy and Commerce Committee , marking the first time a freshman congressman has been selected for the committee in 14 years. Colorado House Rep.-elect Ryan Gonzalez, a Republican, secured the House District 50 seat in a narrow victory over Democrat Rep. Mary Young with 51% of the vote. Colorado Sen.-elect Scott Bright, a Republican, defeated Democrat Mark Johnston for the District 13 seat being vacated by Democrat Sen. Kevin Priola with 56% of the vote. Republican Yazmin Navarro also shook things up when she won the 8th District seat on the state Board of Education over incumbent Democrat Rhonda Solis with 52% of the vote.Come winters, people generally tend to feel the shivers and their tempers subside a bit as well. Summers are seething and people’s moods are often inflammable. Yet, here are some who are perennial shouters, while others are born to be calm. Circumstances make us what we are, of course. Company matters. So do the vibes that surround us. A huge amount of will power is needed to stay upbeat when the going gets rough or when one is surrounded by perpetrators of diatribe! Some people evolve and others devolve, of course. Various knocks and jolts make the latter cynical and prone to venting out their angst often. A Hollywood actor has subtitled her Instagram account as “old hag” and since she looks anything but old or like a hag, she definitely means it in the wicked sense. Becoming wicked and caustic by nature is not a choice that is easily made. But it is ultimately a decision taken by a potentially balanced human being, who could have chosen to be otherwise, no matter what the circumstances. There are millions who have made the opposite choice. To remain civil and amiable despite grave challenges and even dastardly conditions. Mother Teresa once went to a hutment colony where the poorest of the poor subsisted. She was handing over small bags of rice to them. One truly impoverished lady expressed her extreme gratefulness upon receiving the said offering from the messiah. But Mother Teresa was bowled over by the lady’s next few words. “I will hand over half the rice to my friend in another colony. Her family needs it even more than mine!” The poor and needy cannot afford to be rude. They are often heartbroken but never harsh, unless circumstances are beyond their control. Rudeness is the exclusive prerogative of the high and mighty. A rather well-off family was to travel by a flight and the airline announced a delay due to weather conditions. The poor airline representative at the airport had to face the brunt of boorish behaviour from the said pompous family. And to make matters worse, most of the other passengers started misbehaving with the little lady as well. Security had to be called in, and neutral onlookers were pleased to see that the security incharge gave such a scolding to the head of the said family that he quickly forgot his pomposity thereafter! Our conduct is a matter of choice. It is we who decide how we are to behave on a given day. Some people are mercurial while others are consistent. Our moodiness often gets the better of us and we succumb. We might then speak with a certain lack of finesse or to put it bluntly, with acerbic iciness that surpasses all acceptable norms, particularly if we “lose it” in public. A study on rudeness at work places, led by Binyamin Cooper of Carnegie Melon University, states this: “While small insults and other forms of rude behaviour might seem relatively harmless compared to more serious forms of aggression, our findings suggest that they can have serious consequences.” It is a matter of fact that one caustic word uttered by a boss, a teacher or a parent, in unbridled anger, might harm the recipient’s psyche for a long time to come. Those in positions of power in society are meant to be even more responsible than others for each little fragment of their conduct. If they are unable to rein in their tendency to lose control, they are sure to cause much more harm than good in whatever capacity they are operating. A wise man once said, “Words once spoken cannot be recalled!” There is also a saying in a lighter vein that advises people to sort out small arguments through fisticuffs instead of hurting other people with deeper wounds through venomous words! Not to be taken seriously of course. The impatient nature of life itself in this era means that many people are short-fused anyway. Social media has exacerbated rudeness. We must focus on physical fitness, creative pursuits, and meditation in order to calm our minds. The rudeness index hasn’t been invented yet. Let’s hope it never sees the light of day! vivek.atray@gmail.com
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen quit the World Rapid Chess Championship on Friday after he refused to change out of the jeans he was wearing, according to the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Carlsen, who has won five world rapid and seven world blitz titles in the last 10 years, also withdrew from the World Blitz Championship which follows the tournament. FIDE said in a statement that Carlsen breached the tournament’s dress code by wearing jeans, then declined to change his clothes after the Chief Arbiter requested him to and issued a fine of US$200. As a result, Carlsen would not have been paired for round nine, though he could have returned for the rest of the tournament had he not decided to walk away, per Chess.com. Since he had performed poorly in the earlier rounds, there was little chance that Carlsen could have defended his title regardless. “This decision was made impartially and applies equally to all players,” FIDE said, adding that fellow competitor Ian Nepominatchi also breached the dress code by wearing sports shoes but continued to play once he had changed. The standoff became “a matter of principle” for Carlsen, he told chess channel Take Take Take. “I haven’t appealed, honestly I’m too old at this point to care too much, if this is what they want to do ... nobody wants to back down, if this is where we are, that’s fine by me,” he said. “I’ll probably head off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer than here and that’s it.” He explained that he had been at a lunch meeting before heading to the tournament’s second day and “barely had time to go the room, change, put on a shirt, jacket and honestly I didn’t even think about the jeans. “I got here and I don’t know if it was after the first game or the second game ... I got a fine, which is fine, and then I got a warning that I would not be paired if I didn’t go change my clothes,” he said. “They said I could do it after the third round today. I said I’ll change tomorrow, if that’s ok, I didn’t even realise today. But they said you have to change now.” Relations between Carlsen, chess’ most famous player, and FIDE, the sport’s governing body, have been growing more strained recently. Carlsen said that his “patience with (FIDE) wasn’t very big to begin with,” accusing the organization of “actively going after players to get them not to sign with Freestyle (Chess),” a tournament where the pieces on the back rank start in a random position and which Carlsen promotes. FIDE’s CEO Emil Sutovsky responded with a statement on social media platform X, calling that claim a “lie.” “We were happy to cooperate (as we cooperate with Grand Chess Tour, for example), to align the calendars, etc,” he said. “The only thing we insisted on – no Series or Tour can be called World Championship unless FIDE approves it. FIDE is the governing body of chess, and any World Championship should either be conducted or approved by FIDE.”
In 1979, General Electric Co. ( GE ) introduced its famous tagline: “We bring good things to life.” One of the things this iconic American company brought to life this year was GE Vernova Inc. ( GEV ) – which GE spun out as a new standalone entity in April. This “purpose-built company” combined GE Renewable Energy, GE Power, and GE Digital. As the company states, it “is uniquely positioned to lead customers through the energy transition” to solve the “energy trilemma of reliability, affordability, and sustainability.” The company is already making strides... nuclear ones, at that. This weekend, CNBC reported that GE Vernova is planning to set up small nuclear reactors across the developed world. This deployment will happen over the next decade. Nicole Holmes, chief commercial officer at GE Vernova’s nuclear unit, GE Hitachi, said that the company’s small modular reactors (SMRs) promise to reduce the cost of building new nuclear plants. An SMR is a type of advanced nuclear reactor that can produce electricity. It has a smaller footprint and can be constructed faster than traditional reactors. They are about a third the size of the average reactors in the current U.S. fleet, with a power capacity of 300 megawatts or less – which could power more than 200,000 U.S. households. As such, SMRs could revitalize nuclear as a vital power source needed for the rise of artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and manufacturing. GE Vernova’s SMR is called the BWRX-300. And compared to a larger nuclear plant, it has fewer components, less concrete, and less steel. BWRX-300’s smaller size allows it to be put in more locations. Here’s why GE Vernova’s nuclear venture is so important: In many respects, nuclear power has no equal, especially when it comes to powering data centers. Because of nuclear’s unique virtues, and the compelling economics it promotes, leading data center operators are becoming leading nuclear power investors. “Everything old is new again,” 18 th century author Jonathan Swift said. And the nuclear energy industry lends truth to that saying. So, in today’s Smart Money , let’s take a look at nuclear energy’s history... And then I’ll share one specific way you can capitalize on its future. A Look Into the Past Throughout the 1960s and ’70s, nuclear energy in the United States enjoyed a Golden Age. Power plants sprouted up across the country to provide reliable, “pollution-free” energy. But the Golden Age started to lose its luster in the late 1970s, as public sentiment turned against the radioactive power source and attempted to halt its nationwide expansion. Then, in March 1979, a reactor at the Three Mile Island facility in Pennsylvania suffered a partial meltdown. Although the accident did not cause any fatalities, it dealt a fatal blow to the industry. Seven years after Three Mile Island, the Soviet Union’s horrific nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl terrified the world. And it seemed to guarantee that nuclear power would never make a comeback in the United States. Yet, despite that monumental setback, nuclear power’s public image eventually started to improve, bit by bit. Its image first started to improve when the term “climate change” entered the global lexicon. When that term appeared, it introduced the environmental equivalent of the classic 1960s self-help book I’m OK – You’re OK . This relativistic attitude asserted that no source of power generation is all bad, nor all good. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. For its part, nuclear energy has the unique strength of providing continuous baseload power, while not fouling the air or spewing CO 2 emissions. Because nuclear power still satisfies about 19% of electricity demand in the U.S., its contribution to clean air is roughly equivalent to removing 100 million cars from the nation’s highways. Moreover, although nuclear reactors produce radioactive waste, they don’t emit a molecule of those toxins into the air. This singular virtue cast a favorable, new light on nuclear power and helped it reclaim a shred of respectability. But old attitudes die hard. The world was not yet ready to welcome home this prodigal power source with open arms. Then AI arrived. And it immediately cleared a seat at the energy table for nuclear power... The AI-Sparked Nuclear Revival AI demands such spectacular volumes of electric power that existing sources are not able to provide. During the last three years alone, the combined electricity consumption of Amazon.com Inc. ( AMZN ) , Meta Platforms Inc. ( META ) , Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT ) , and Alphabet Inc. ( GOOGL ) soared more than 80%. That explosive growth is certain to continue. So, like GE Vernova, these tech giants “rediscovered” nuclear power as an ideal energy source. In October, Amazon announced that Amazon Web Services (AWS) – its cloud computing platform – is set to invest more than $500 million in nuclear power. AWS has signed an agreement with Dominion Energy Inc. ( D ) , Virginia’s top utility company, to explore the development of an SMR near Dominion’s North Anna Nuclear Generating Station (located about halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond). Around the same time, Google announced it will purchase power from Kairos Power, a small modular reactors developer. And in September, Microsoft made a deal with Constellation Energy Corp. ( CEG ) to restart a reactor at the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear facility. As the tech giants need to feed their growing appetite for electric power, they are investing directly in nuclear power. And this is where the profit opportunity comes in. This new high-profile demand for nuclear power from the tech industry could accelerate the uranium industry’s growth and profitability. So, to capitalize on that potential, I recommend investing in the uranium market. In fact, I recently recommended a unique energy play to my Fry’s Investment Report members that stands to benefit directly from the growth of AI technologies. To learn more about this uranium recommendation – and how to become a member of Fry’s Investment Report – click here. Regards, Eric FryThe Cincinnati Bengals were not guaranteed to have their No. 2 wide receiver Tee Higgins in the lineup for the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos , but the former second-round pick ended up being active. Higgins was battling ankle and knee issues during the week but was still able to log three limited sessions before being listed as questionable. And, ultimately, Higgins was active when the Bengals released their list of inactives before kickoff. We expected Higgins to be involved early and often, especially with superstar wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase getting shadow coverage from Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain, but that has not been the case. Here's the latest on Higgins' slow start in Week 17. Is Tee Higgins playing today? Higgins is indeed active and in the lineup, and we've seen him on the field. Sadly, he has yet to be targeted once over the team's first two drives. Hopefully things will get better for him as the game progresses.
