In the end, Zhang Wei's tale is a sobering reminder that in the world of sports, as in life, nothing is guaranteed. Success can be fleeting, and the road to greatness is littered with obstacles and pitfalls. For Beijing's fallen star, the journey from hero to has-been serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of complacency and the importance of staying hungry, even in the face of overwhelming success.600 students at the University of Guelph will participate in a case study on Taylor Swift beginning in 2025. The case study is a component of the post-secondary institution’s Icons of Music op-ed course. Alyssa Woods, course co-designer and associate professor at the U of G, said she has wanted to do a first-year introductory course for quite a while that teaches students to think critically about popular music. “Over the last couple of years, Taylor Swift has really dominated the landscape of popular culture,” Woods said. The university joins a list of post-secondary schools worldwide studying the pop superstar. Unlike other universities that study certain aspects of the singer’s career, Woods said this program will take a different approach by examining key issues in pop music. The case study will foster critical analysis skills and will examine areas such as art, literature, sexuality and religion and how they intersect with pop music and pop culture. She said it seemed like a great opportunity to use Swift as a lens through which to explore larger issues. Woods created the program with Robert Michael Edwards, a University of Guelph professor of pop culture, politics and religion. Although it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why the public is fascinated with Swift, Edwards said time will ultimately tell. But he said Swift’s immediate impact on pop culture is undeniable when you consider the marketing of her concert tours, the ticket sales, and even how a concert tour film might be consumed. “Whether you love her or hate, and people tend to fall somewhere along a spectrum on that, you cannot deny the impact,” Edwards said. He said we’ve seen Swift have a direct impact on everything from trends in fan culture, fashion influence, plus the significant direct economic impact on the cities that she’s visiting. Woods said the course will include an examination of the Canadian leg of Swift’s The Era’s Tour as well. The singer is performing the final three shows of The Eras Tour in Toronto, which will conclude in Vancouver with a series of three sold-out show beginning Dec. 6. And whether you’re a Swiftie or not, Woods said there’s something in the program for everyone. “While there’s only so much you can do in a 12-week course, the idea is that they can take these skills and apply them in other analytic contexts,” she said. The virtual program is already full of a capacity. She said students can work at their own pace across the content, too. Woods said there have been discussions about the course returning in the summer term. “I’m really excited to see this course being launched and obviously really excited to see so much interest not just in Taylor Swift, but in studying popular music,” she said. Woods added the program may change in the future potentially, depending on who’s the biggest artist at that time, and revolve around another singer or multiple singers. The course runs from January to early April.

Israel’s attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and witnesses in the Prime Minister’s corruption trial. The Israeli Justice Ministry made the announcement in a message late on Thursday, saying the investigation would focus on the findings of a recent report by the Uvda investigative programme into Sara Netanyahu. The programme uncovered a trove of WhatsApp messages in which Mrs Netanyahu appears to instruct a former aide to organise protests against political opponents and to intimidate Hadas Klein, a key witness in the trial. The announcement did not mention Mrs Netanyahu by name and the Justice Ministry declined further comment. Earlier on Thursday, Mr Netanyahu blasted the Uvda report as “lies”. It is the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the Netanyahus, highlighted by the PM’s ongoing corruption trial. Mr Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases alleging he exchanged favours with powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. He denies the charges and says he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by overzealous prosecutors, police and the media. The Penguins will welcome back a veteran forward to their lineup on Saturday against Utah. The team announced (X link ) that they have activated center Kevin Hayes off injured reserve. To make room for him on the active roster, forward Vasily Ponomarev has been returned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Hayes is in his first season with Pittsburgh after St. Louis paid a second-round pick to offload the final two years of his deal (or at least half of it with Philadelphia retaining the other half) on the Penguins. The 32-year-old is off to a bit of a quiet start as he has just three goals and one assist in his first 14 games. However, he’s also averaging just 9:27 per night, by far a career-low. A veteran of 727 career regular-season appearances over parts of 11 years, Hayes has been a productive middleman at times and has five years of 44 or more points under his belt. But with his playing time basically being limited to the fourth line so far this season, it’s unlikely that Hayes will get close to that mark, barring a change in role as the season progresses. As for Ponomarev, he was recalled a week and a half ago and got into three games in that stretch, his first three games with Pittsburgh after they acquired him as part of the Jake Guentzel trade at last year’s trade deadline. The 22-year-old was held off the scoresheet while averaging a little over nine minutes per game. Ponomarev sustained an upper-body injury late in training camp, derailing any chance he had of making the opening roster and instead landed on season-opening IR until the end of October. As a result, he hasn’t had much playing time with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton either and he has just one assist in five games at that level. Still early in his development, consistent playing time will be needed and he’s likelier to get that at the AHL level than battling for fourth-line action with the big club. Harrison Ford, the legendary actor who originated the role of Indiana Jones, has become synonymous with the character. His rugged charm, intense blue eyes, and charismatic presence have endeared him to fans for decades. When comparing the digital version of Indiana Jones in video games to Harrison Ford's portrayal, it's clear that there is no contest. The digital version may capture some of the essence of the character, but it lacks the depth and authenticity that Harrison Ford brings to the role.
