Cam Carter scored 20 points, Miller had 16 and Dji Bailey 14 for LSU (5-1). Darius Johnson had 25 points, eight assists and six rebounds for UCF (4-2). Keyshawn Hall had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Ivy-Curry scored 20. South Florida led by 15 points at halftime and maintained a double-digit lead for all but a few possessions in the first 11 1/2 minutes of the second half. UCF led 62-48 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining but Sears hit three 3-pointers and LSU drew to within 64-59 with 6 minutes to go. The Tigers scored the last six points of regulation to force overtime. In the first half, LSU led 15-13 about eight minutes into the game but the Tigers missed 15 of 16 shots while being outscored 25-3 over the next 10 minutes. CDT’s new report, argues the use of digitized assessments in hiring presents a variety of accessibility barriers and potentially discriminatory outcomes. Ariana Aboulafia, a project lead in disability rights in technology policy at CDT and one of the report’s authors, said although disabled employment has been up consistently since 2020, return-to-office mandates and hiring tools such as these digitized assessments may hinder that progress. “I think that it’s hopefully going to be really helpful to have this report out there so that employers who are considering these sorts of tools — and also developers who are considering the creation of these sorts of tools — prioritize the experience of folks with disabilities,” Aboulafia said. She emphasized no marginalized group is monolithic, something that is especially true for people with disabilities. People with different disabilities have unique experiences interacting with technologies. Michal Luria, a research fellow at CDT and one of the report’s authors, offered an example of how a digitized assessment may be inaccessible in separate ways for people with differing disabilities. The study used an emotional intelligence test in which participants had to identify the emotion expressed in an image. People with low vision or blindness could not clearly see the image, and it did not include alt text descriptions — written descriptions of visual content for people using screen readers or other assistive technologies. That is one set of challenges presented by a single test, which could present alternate challenges for someone on the spectrum of autism; in this case, interpreting an emotion based on an image with limited context could be challenging. And in either case, Luria argued the test does not accurately measure participants’ level of emotional intelligence or their ability to respond to an emotionally complex situation in the workplace. “Most of these technologies are not made with most disability in mind, much less the broad spectrum of disability,” Aboulafia said. Luria highlighted the impact of these assessments on participants' emotional experience, even in a simulated hiring environment. “The discrimination is kind of inherent in these kinds of tools,” Luria said, echoing the study participants’ sentiments: They were split on whether these tools could be made more accessible. However, the report offers recommendations to minimize the harm these assessments could cause. First, it said, employers should evaluate whether a digitized assessment is necessary for the specific role for which they are hiring. Employers can consider alternate methods of measurement that may more accurately measure relevant skills and abilities. Second, it recommends following accessibility guidelines, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and initiatives of the Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology. Finally, if it has been determined that a digitized assessment is necessary, organizations can take steps to ensure the reduction of discriminatory impacts. For example, Luria said these types of assessments should be used as a supplementary part of the hiring process rather than in screening. “Those assessments, ideally, would not replace the comprehensive human evaluation of a candidate that should be in place at all stages of a hiring process,” she said. Luria also recommended transparency about when and how these tools will be used in the hiring process, urging this information be clear from the initial job posting. For some potential job candidates, the presence of such assessments may deter them from applying to a job. Transparency can not only help people with disabilities determine whether a job and employer are the right fit for them, Aboulafia said, but it can help job seekers decide if they want to disclose their disability, when to do so and whether to ask for accommodations: “If you don’t know that a tool is being used, there’s no way to know that you might need an accommodation at that stage in a hiring process."

The government of Canada is moving forward with a $900 million plan to shore up its border security and immigration systems. The plan, announced in the Fall Economic Statement that sets broad policy and spending plans from the Prime Minister and his administration, calls for $1.3 billion Canadian in spending to address five “pillars” of the Canadian border and immigration systems. “We must preserve the integrity of our immigration system and make sure that it is well-managed and sustainable,” said Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marc Miller. “As we continue working with the United States to protect the safety of both sides of the border, we continue to offer protection to the world’s most vulnerable, while maintaining an immigration system that Canadians can trust.” LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY Broadly, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government plan to fund law enforcement activity to intercept fentanyl and the chemicals used to make it from entering Canada, including training a new class of canine drug detection teams to supplement the 80 K9 teams already in use across the country. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are responsible for patrolling and enforcing border and immigration laws between ports of entry north of the border. The Canadian government plans to deploy a new air-based intelligence unit within that national police force, which will use drones, helicopters, portable surveillance towers, and counter-drone technology to effectively monitor the U.S.-Canada border 24 hours a day. A legal change planned by Trudeau’s government would also require Canadian ports to provide space for the government to inspect goods for export, as they are required to for imported goods. The Trudeau government also plans to invest in the RCMP national police force and its national communications monitoring authority to track transnational organized crime and fentanyl trafficking. The Canadian health ministry will create a national drug profiling and testing center to add another 2,000 investigations to the country’s annual investigatory capacity, alongside a new division focused on tracking precursor chemicals for a range of dangerous and illegal drugs. The Canadians also seek to increase information-sharing agreements with the U.S., coordinating cross-border interception of illegal crossings and drug trafficking in a more unified way, while collaborating with local police forces on the Canadian side of the border as well. Trudeau proposes creating a new North American Joint Strike Force to target transnational organized crime. FLAGPOLING, IMMIGRATION The Canadian government also formally announced plans to end “flagpoling,” a practice maligned by U.S. officials where Canadian visa holders cross out of Canada and immediately back into it through a U.S. land crossing to speed up their visa renewal process. The Canadian government will take broad steps to end the practice on top of steps already taken, including limiting visa renewal processing hours at Canadian ports of entry and establishing an in-country renewal office network to supplement the mail-based renewal system. To counter illegal immigration, the Canadian government is looking to amend national immigration laws to give its government more power to suspend, cancel, or change an individual’s immigration process and to pause accepting applications for visas or asylum. The government is also reaffirming its commitment to current immigration agreements that require people seeking asylum to do so in the first country they enter, whether in the U.S. or Canada. PARLIAMENT PLANS Many of these announced changes rely on the Canadian Parliament to pass legislation, either to change existing law or to authorize spending. The plan comes at a tenuous time for the Trudeau government, as he is broadly losing popularity, fighting with the premiers who run the Canadian provinces, and hearing calls for resignation from both the opposition and his own party. On Monday, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from her post and lambasted the Trudeau administration, denouncing his domestic economic plans that she accused of being short-sighted and unserious. She had been expected to deliver the Fall Economic Statement, which contained this and many other policy proposals, later that day.
