MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — The Marrakech International Film Festival bestowed its top prize Friday on “Happy Holidays,” a Palestinian drama set in Israel whose screenplay won an award at the Venice Film Festival in September. The film, directed by Scandar Copti, follows Israeli and Palestinian characters facing familial and societal pressures in present-day Haifa and stars both professional and non-professional actors. It is the first Palestinian film to win Marrakech’s Etoile D’Or award. Screenwriter Mona Copti in an acceptance speech said the film team’s joy at winning was tempered by war in the Middle East and she denounced what she called the dehumanization of Palestinians Eight features, each a director’s first or second film, competed in the festival. The winning films tackled social issues through the lens of family, a theme that the festival’s artistic director Remi Bonhomme underlined at its opening. The festival awarded its jury prize to two additional films from Somalia and Argentina. The nine-member jury awarded Mo Harawe’s “The Village Next to Paradise” — a story about a family living under the threat of drone strikes dreaming of a better life — and Silvina Schnicer’s “The Cottage” about children who commit an unspeakable act at a rich family’s summer vacation home. “The Village Next to Paradise” participated last year in the Marrakech festival’s Atlas Workshops, an initiative to develop filmmakers from Morocco, the Middle East and Africa and promote their work. In his acceptance speech, Harawe lauded the film’s Somali cast and crew and highlighted the significance of the award for Somalia. Cecilia Rainero, the lead actor of “The Cottage,” thanked the jury and said it was meaningful amid Argentinian President Javier Milei’s moves to defund the country’s film industry. Former Virginia guard Jalen Warley is transferring to Gonzaga, according to several reports Monday. Gonzaga appeared to confirm the transfer by reposting the news on social media. Warley, who has 96 college games (58 starts) under his belt, will use a redshirt this year and spend 2025-26 in Spokane, Wash. Warley played three seasons at Florida State before transferring to Virginia before the 2024-25 season. He was allowed to enter the transfer portal again following the surprise retirement of coach Tony Bennett just three weeks before the season. With the Seminoles, Warley averaged 6.0 points, 2.9 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. His junior year was his best, as he put up 7.5 points, 2.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game over 33 appearances (32 starts). --Field Level MediaPoulakidas' 22 help Yale beat Fairfield 91-66How Dana Holgorsen adjusted Nebraska football's playbook to deliver instant results

Malzahn exited amid growing pressure from the fan base after back-to-back losing records in UCF’s first two seasons in the Big 12. He was 28-24 in four years at a program that has had very high highs and very low lows over the past two decades. So how good is the UCF job? What names could get in the mix? Based on conversations with industry sources, here is a breakdown of the job and the potential names to watch. Recent history/tradition: B UCF feels like the opposite of Big 12 peer West Virginia . While the Mountaineers have a high floor and lower ceiling, the Knights have a lower floor and higher ceiling. Since 2004, UCF has had seven seasons with double-digit wins, two winless campaigns and three trips to New Year’s Six bowls — one each by Scott Frost, Josh Heupel and George O’Leary. The program is only 45 years old but has had an impressive rise from Division III to a Power 4 conference. But a 5-13 record in the Big 12 is a reminder of some necessary growing pains. On-field outlook: B- The roster has holes, despite ranking fifth in the Big 12 in 247Sports’ Talent Composite this season. UCF’s all-time touchdown leader, running back RJ Harvey , is out of eligibility, and a handful of players (including starting receiver Xavier Townsend ) opted out during the season. The Knights started four quarterbacks, with redshirt freshman Dylan Rizk showing some promise (five touchdowns, two interceptions and a 61.9 completion percentage). Perhaps UCF needs a little more time to build the experienced depth necessary after moving into the Power 4. That’s harder, given a coaching change just days before the early signing period and a recruiting class that, as of Tuesday, was ranked last in the conference. Advertisement Three of UCF’s eight conference losses were decided in the closing minutes, and the Big 12 remains wide open. The right coach can turn things around. Money situation: B- UCF had one of the biggest football budgets in the Group of 5 but was near the bottom of the Big 12 last year. The Knights have been earning half a share of conference payouts and will get full distributions starting next year. Athletic director Terry Mohajir has said the program is moving in the right direction financially, but more strides need to be made. The Knights are continuing to spend on facilities upgrades. Preliminary work has started on an $88 million stadium renovation that’s expected to be completed in time for the 2026 season. Construction fences for the new Roth Tower are up setting the stage for the future of the Bounce House 👀🏟️ https://t.co/JqoM3ZCHCf pic.twitter.com/L1ljEpkVxc — UCF Knights 🌴 (@UCFKnights) December 3, 2024 University stability: A- Mohajir was regarded as one of the Group of 5’s top ADs when UCF hired him from Arkansas State in 2021. He and president Alexander Cartwright are both established in their roles and helped the Knights earn their Big 12 invite. UCF remains one of the largest schools in the country (almost 60,000 undergraduates last fall) and has shown a commitment to athletics. Coach pool: B+ Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell is 57-17 as a full-time head coach, including a 21-4 run with the Flames. The 47-year-old Tennessee native ran one of the most entertaining offenses in the country at Coastal Carolina, which seems like a good fit for UCF’s modern, up-tempo brand. But he has never worked at a Power 4 program. Los Angeles Rams analyst Scott Frost is beloved at UCF after going 13-0 in his second season. But he never had a winning record in his 16-31 stint at Nebraska, and coaching sequels rarely live up to the standard of the original. Advertisement Texas State head coach G.J. Kinne was Malzahn’s co-offensive coordinator at UCF in 2021. The 36-year-old Texas native also seems to fit the Knights’ identity. Kinne led Incarnate Word to the FCS semifinals in 2021, and his 15-10 record with the Bobcats earned him a contract extension in November. Is changing jobs a viable option? Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle is another former UCF assistant; he spent two seasons under Heupel and followed him to the Vols. The 38-year-old California native has had success as a quarterbacks coach, tutoring Hendon Hooker and Nico Iamaleava , among others. Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield overcame a bumpy start to his tenure and is 20-5 over the past two seasons. The former Mike Norvell assistant has Florida ties. The 44-year-old is from Jacksonville and spent two years with UCF as a graduate assistant. His offense has ranked in the top 25 in scoring in each of the past three years. UNLV head coach Barry Odom was in consideration the last time and has the Rebels in Friday’s Mountain West title game. But the former Missouri head coach has a defensive background, and UCF has a much stronger offensive identity. Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein leads a top-20 offense for a national championship contender. He’s also the position coach for former UCF star Dillon Gabriel , a potential Heisman Trophy finalist. A deep Playoff run could complicate the timing for the 35-year-old Kentucky native. Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. is a future head coach, but is he ready for a Power 4 job at age 31? He has familiarity in the state with stints at South Florida and Florida Atlantic and briefly overlapped with Mohajir at Kansas (when Mohajir was an administrator and Weis was a manager on the football team coached by his father). Advertisement UConn head coach Jim Mora Jr. won 10 games twice at UCLA and just guided the Huskies to their first winning season (8-4) since the 2010 Fiesta Bowl run. Mora has done a miraculous job of resuscitating UConn, and stealing the Huskies’ coach would be a major development in the so-called Civil ConFLiCT “rivalry” between the programs. Overall grade: B UCF is the fourth major program sitting in the center of one of the most talent-laden states in the country. The Knights have a clear identity (modern, fast) to sell to recruits. But they’re new to the Power 4, and it’s fair to wonder if fans’ enormous expectations — buoyed by the undefeated season national title it claims from 2017 — are attainable immediately. Regardless, there’s great potential for eventual success in a Big 12 that lacks heavyweights. (Top photo: Julio Aguilar / Getty Images)Linda McMahon, Secretary of Plunder
By MICHELLE L. PRICE NEW YORK (AP) — Chad Chronister, Donald Trump’s pick to run the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration, becoming the second person selected by the president-elect to bow out quickly after being nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation. Sheriff Chronister, the top law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County, Florida, said in a post on X that he was backing away from the opportunity, which he called “the honor of a lifetime.” “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration,” Chronister wrote. He did not elaborate, and Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Chronister follows former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz , Trump’s first pick to serve as attorney general, in withdrawing his name for a post in the administration. Gaetz withdrew following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. Trump’s pick of Chronister for the DEA job drew backlash from conservatives, who raised concerns over his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his saying that his office “does not engage in federal immigration enforcement activities.” In March 2020, Chronister arrested the pastor of a megachurch who held services with hundreds of people and violated a safer-at-home order in place aimed at limiting the spread of the Covid virus. “Shame on this pastor, their legal staff and the leaders of this staff for forcing us to do our job. That’s not what we wanted to do during a declared state of emergency,” Chronister said at the time. “We are hopeful that this will be a wakeup call.” U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, was among those airing public complaints, saying Chronister should be “disqualified” for the arrest. Others flagged comments Chronister made in a video about Florida’s immigration laws that he released in 2023 that circulated again online after Trump named him last weekend. We do not target individuals based on their immigration status. That’s the authority of federal agencies.” Trump has made a sweeping crackdown on immigration a central focus of his campaign and his aims for his coming administration. Maharashtra Election Result: Aaditya Thackeray, Sreejaya Chavan, and kin of veterans to enter AssemblyTHE DALLES — At this time of the year, every team feels confident and has a good outlook about the upcoming basketball season. For The Dalles High Riverhawks girls squad, they’re hoping for one of their best seasons in the past 10 years. The Riverhawks, guided by fourth-year Coach Darcy Hodges, have an experienced squad led by seniors Sydney Newby, Laci Hoylman and Yadhira Cruz Torres. Hodges said: “We have everyone returning from last year, so hopefully that helps us out a little bit and provides us with a stronger team with lots of experience, and we also have some younger kids who can step up and help more as well.” Last season, Newby (first team) and Hoylman (second team) earned 4A Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) all- league awards. Juniors Hailey Johnston and Jackie Begay both earned honorable mention awards. The Riverhawks have all 10 of their varsity players returning from last year’s 9-14 squad, 6-4 in the six-team TVC standings. “The girls have put a lot of work in during the offseason to become physically stronger,” said Hodges. “We have a lot of talent on the team, and it will be interesting to see how things play out. It’s nice to not have to rebuild, and so we get to continue what we started last year.” In the last two years, the Riverhawks qualified for an Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) play-in round road matchup, losing a season ago, 47-36, at Stayton. The Riverhawks are focusing on advancing to the state playoffs for the first time since 2015. To do so, they’ll have to contend with defending champion Madras, which lost seven seniors from its 2023-24 team. Crook County was second in the TVC, and it lost three seniors to graduation. The Riverhawks and Molalla are the only two TVC teams not to lose any seniors. The Riverhawks started practice Nov. 18 in preparation for their 24-game schedule, which begins with a 7 p.m. Dec. 4 nonleague road game at Scappoose (10-13 last year). The Riverhawks play their first home game Dec. 10 against North Marion. “I’m not sure who will be the top team this year, but Crook County is always tough,” said Hodges, a 1999 The Dalles High graduate. “I’m not sure what Madras will do after losing a multiple number of kids, but they’re usually one of the top teams. I’m just hoping that we will battle for first place in the league. I’m hopeful that we will continue to grow and build off of what we have achieved over the last three years.” The Riverhawk roster also includes junior Makaila Collins; sophomores Morgan Donivan, Kestly Hodges and Evelyn Rogers; and frosh Bryce Newby and Willow Ziegenhagen. The Riverhawks’ lineup will have three players (Sydney Newby, Hoylman and Rogers) who are six-foot or taller.
Companies in China that self-regulate to lessen harmful social practices – an increasingly prevalent strategy – are more likely to attract reputation-sensitive buyers and increase their exports to the Western world, new Cornell research finds. Activism in recent decades has prompted numerous firms and sectors to adopt codes of conduct, certification systems, and other of self-regulation to manage harmful environmental and social practices in their supply chains and to safeguard their reputations, said Duanyi Yang , assistant professor in the ILR School’s Department of Global Labor and Work. “There has been significant skepticism within academia regarding the integrity of certification bodies and potential corruption in the certification process, especially in developing countries,” said Yang, co-author of “ Self-Regulation for Reputation-Sensitive Buyers: SA8000 in China ,” which was published Nov. 25 in Management Science. “We found that private regulation did attract higher-wage firms, but it did not raise wages and cannot be seen as a substitute for collective bargaining and public regulations.” SA8000 is an international certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. SA8000 adopters, which are considered a best-in-class standard for workplace conditions in China, exhibited higher pre-certification wages for workers compared to similar non-adopters in the country, surprising the researchers. The adoption of SA8000 certification also led to increased sales to foreign markets in which reputation-sensitive buyers resided. In addition to measuring revenue from exporting to the Western world, Yang and her co-authors – Greg Distelhorst from the University of Toronto and Judith Stroehle from the University of St. Gallen, in Switzerland – found that while employee wages were initially higher at these companies, the initial gains did not improve as time went on. “Although firms usually work hard to pass the bar to get the certifications, once they obtained certifications, our research shows that they exported more to the Western world but did not do much more to continue increasing workers’ wages to make themselves a better or more socially responsible company,” Yang said. To conduct their research, the authors obtained the records from Social Accountability International to collect the names and certification dates of every SA8000-certified enterprise in mainland China from 1998 to 2008. They then matched 199 certified firms with companies listed in the annual survey of industrial enterprises conducted by China’s National Bureau of Statistics. Then, they measured workers’ wages and revenue earned from exports to foreign countries.LOS ANGELES , Nov. 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Appotronics, the inventor of the ALPD® laser display technology, recently participated in the Laser Illuminated Projector Association (LIPA) Annual General Meeting held in Los Angeles , United States . During the event, the company showcased its optics solutions designed for both the interior and exterior of vehicles, emphasizing their versatility in functions such as illumination, entertainment, and V2X (Vehicle to Everything) communication. Meng Han , senior director of Appotronics, addressed the attendees, which included laser illumination and display technology experts, market analysts, and trend observers. He emphasized that the automotive industry is undergoing a transformation from internal combustion engines to autonomous electric vehicles, creating ample opportunities for laser projectors. This shift typically results in more internal space for entertainment features, such as in-car theaters and laser display-enabled human-vehicle communication both inside and outside the vehicle. "We have done the study, finding many people like it, " said Han, citing the example of Appotronics' rollable giant laser display screen, which is equipped on the Seres AITO M9, a top-selling SUV priced above RMB 500,000 in China . The SUV has received over 170,000 orders since its debut late last year, indicating a strong market demand for such innovative features. Han further pointed out that more laser display technology will be applied within the cabin as a supplement to the current LCD panels, transforming the cabin into an immersive and comfortable third living space. "As for the long future, the future isn't more screens-or even screens at all." Han cited Alfonso Albaisa , Design Chief of Nissan, emphasizing that laser display offers numerous advantages, such as easy modeling, free-form surfaces, design flexibility, safety, and sustainability and can be utilized for projections inside the cabin, on the sunroof, side windows, or even on the windshield. Afterwards, Xin Yu , vice president of Appotronics, introduced the company's intelligent digital colorful laser headlight as an example of immersive exterior display . This innovative light is equipped on the newly-released Smart #5 vehicle, enabling car users to enjoy movies while camping. Yu announced that the product is currently available in China and will soon be launched in Europe and Australia . Yu also demonstrated the company's All-in-One laser headlamp, which fulfills multiple functions, including intelligent signaling displays (ISD), adaptive driving beam (ADB) systems, V2X communications, and entertainment. He revealed that the multi-functional headlamp will soon enter mass production and will be showcased at CES 2025, which is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas between January 7 and January 10 . Other automotive optics solutions from Appotronics will also be displayed at the event. "So hopefully in the future, we have more friends together in this industry to make more interesting applications and build up more markets for laser innovation." Yu concluded, adding that he expects more "concepts" of laser technology to turn into "reality" in the automotive sector, just as laser technology has revolutionized the cinema industry. In addition to Appotronics' updates, representatives from Texas Instruments, Epson, Panasonic, Seibersdorf Labs, OMDIA, PMA Research, Nordisk Cinema, Nichia America Corporation, Barco, Oxford University , LUMAfestival.com, and RSL Fiber Systems also shared insights on current laser-related regulations, technological advancements, and future trends at the annual meeting.Tuesday’s contest features the Tulane Green Wave (4-2) and the Wyoming Cowboys (4-1) squaring off at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya (on November 26) at 6:00 PM ET.
