ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to take decisive action against “future instances of violent protests and disruptive sit-ins.” He underscored that the government would no longer tolerate activities that jeopardise the nation’s economy and stability. Addressing the federal cabinet on Wednesday, the prime minister emphasised a zero-tolerance policy toward those inciting violence. While refraining from explicitly naming Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he implicitly criticised the party for orchestrating recent demonstrations in the federal capital, which caused widespread disruption. He insisted that such incidents necessitate a more stringent approach to prevent their recurrence. Sharif drew attention to the economic fallout as the protests took place. He spoke about how life in Islamabad and Rawalpindi was paralysed, leaving businesses shuttered and daily wage earners unable to make ends meet. “The turmoil disrupted supply chains, forced factory closures, and left patients in urgent need of medical care stranded due to blocked roads.” The prime minister also highlighted the broader economic ramifications, noting a sharp decline in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE), which plummeted by 4,000 points in a single day after reaching a record high of 99,000 points. “These agitators have become adversaries of Pakistan’s progress,” he stated. “Their actions repeatedly derail our economy. Stability fosters business growth and investment, and we must safeguard these principles at all costs.” Sharif also condemned the PTI for disruptive tactics, which he described as a harmful precedent in Pakistan’s political history, citing the 2014 sit-in; a 126-day-long protest that delayed the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, stalling major projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He also referenced protests during key diplomatic events, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Islamabad, which alarmed foreign dignitaries and tarnished Pakistan’s global image. Even Saudi officials, the prime minister noted, expressed concerns about the instability stemming from political agitation. “This culture of chaos and anarchy is unacceptable,” Sharif said. “No responsible political party in our history has ever stooped to such levels. The PTI’s actions have damaged our international relationships and economic stability, for the sake of personal interests.” The prime minister extended gratitude to law enforcement agencies, including the Islamabad, Punjab, and Sindh police, as well as the Rangers, for their effective handling of recent protests. He singled out the Chief of Army Staff for his crucial support in maintaining order. While affirming the constitutional right to peaceful protest, Shehbaz Sharif stressed that no one has the right to disrupt public life or destroy national assets. He lauded the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies in dispersing violent demonstrators, restoring calm, and safeguarding citizens. However, he criticised the provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) for neglecting its responsibilities. He accused the KP government of focusing on instigating violence in the federal capital rather than addressing rising insurgency and lawlessness in the province. “While the people of KP suffered from increasing insecurity, their government was busy orchestrating provocations against the federation,” he remarked. Sharif reiterated the need for exemplary punishment for individuals involved in violent incidents, including the May 9 riots. He argued that a lack of accountability emboldened perpetrators, leading to repeated disruptions. “If the culprits of the May 9 riots had faced appropriate punishment, we wouldn’t be witnessing this chaos today,” he said. “The cycle of unrest must end for Pakistan’s future.” Highlighting his government’s efforts to stabilise the economy, which he described as being on a path to recovery despite numerous challenges, Sharif credited the coalition government’s difficult yet necessary decisions for averting a potential default. “Inflation is easing, and we are seeing the fruits of bold, collaborative actions,” he noted, praising coalition partners for prioritising national interests over political considerations. “In the last eight months, we have made significant strides toward economic stabilisation. These achievements are the result of teamwork and determination, not miracles.” “It pains them to see the country stabilising and moving forward,” he added, alleging that the opposition was disheartened by Pakistan’s economic recovery. “It hurts them that Pakistan is stabilising and moving forward,” he said. The prime minister also criticised what he described as PTI’s self-serving political strategies, accusing its leadership of prioritising personal ambitions over national welfare. He claimed that the party’s actions had strained relations with friendly nations and tarnished Pakistan’s reputation. “This is not politics; it is chaos of the worst kind,” Sharif stated. “There is no place for such behavior in a civilised democracy.” He added that PTI’s leadership blatantly disregarded directives from the Islamabad High Court, undermining constitutional norms in their quest for power. In his concluding remarks, the prime minister declared his government’s commitment to ensuring such disruptions do not recur. He emphasised that the administration would take all necessary steps to uphold peace and stability, which are essential for Pakistan’s progress. “We will not allow the country’s stability to be jeopardised, not on our watch or anyone else’s,” he said. “The government’s priority is to focus on building a stronger, more resilient Pakistan, and we will take every step to safeguard this mission.” The prime minister assured the nation that his administration remains dedicated to fostering economic growth, strengthening international relations, and ensuring law and order. Δ document.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value", ( new Date() ).getTime() );Brain injuries or pre-existing conditions are the root cause of speech or non-verbal communication challenges. For some infants, this can lead to difficulties with feeding and swallowing. Life for children with disabilities, developmental delays, and medical conditions. In India, developmental disabilities affect every 1 in 6 children, which accounts for 15% of the entire child population of the country. Paediatric rehabilitation adapts to the changing needs of growing children by taking a comprehensive, patient-centred approach. Why Is Paediatric Rehabilitation Necessary? The process supports multiple stages of development in toddlers, including developing motor and cognitive skills or guiding an adolescent toward independence. The specialised treatment addresses a variety of diagnoses, including neurodevelopmental disorders, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, muscular disorders, peripheral neuropathies, connective tissue disorders, chronic pain, and musculoskeletal injuries. How Does Paediatric Rehabilitation Work For Children Facing Diverse Challenges? The critical factor is collaboration. The process involves a multidisciplinary team that includes physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), speech-language pathologists (SLPs), neuropsychologists (NPs), orthotists, prosthetists, and medical equipment specialists. The team addresses different aspects of a child's development. They practise a holistic approach that covers the children's physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. The collaborative plan is then tailored to meet each child's unique needs. Physical Therapy Essential for children with developmental delays, genetic disorders, muscle coordination issues, congenital disabilities, and orthopaedic disabilities, physical therapy in paediatric rehabilitation primarily focuses on improving physique, range of motion, flexibility, and balance. Physical therapy can enhance mobility and coordination in children with developmental delays or genetic disorders. The different types of physical therapeutic training include: var firstScrolled3 = false; window.addEventListener("scroll",(event) => { if(!firstScrolled3) {window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: "thumbnails-m", container: "taboola-mid-article-thumbnails", placement: "Mid Article Thumbnails", target_type: "mix" }); firstScrolled3 = true; } }); Every method has its way of treating the children based on the diagnosis requirement. For instance, hippotherapy improves muscle symmetry in children with spastic cerebral palsy, whereas aquatic treatment has demonstrated positive outcomes for children to build strength and coordination. Occupational Therapy Getting to age-appropriate milestones is crucial for any child. Occupational therapists assess a child's abilities in daily tasks and compare them with these goals. The therapy improves fine motor skills, sensory integration, and visual-motor coordination, essential for socialising and other daily activities. Brushing, contrast bath, sensory integration, multi-sensory stimulation, hand-arm bimanual training, assistive technology, therapeutic listening, or incorporating play to enhance academic and social abilities are some methods used in occupational therapy. Speech-Language Therapy Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use multiple therapy methods, including a sequential oral sensory (SOS) approach to feeding, verbal cueing, and functional communication training, to assist children in making consistent progress with phonological or vocabulary challenges.

Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen have targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment on Thursday took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military later said it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief was at the location in Yemen. An uneasy calm settles over Syrian city of Homs after outbreak of sectarian violence HOMS, Syria (AP) — Syria’s new security forces checked IDs and searched cars in the central city of Homs a day after protests by members of the Alawite minority erupted in gunfire and stirred fears that the country’s fragile peace could break down. A tense calm prevailed Thursday after checkpoints were set up throughout the country’s third-largest city, which has a mixed population of Sunni and Shia Muslims, Alawites and Christians. The security forces are controlled by the former insurgent group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which led the charge that unseated former President Bashar Assad. The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say they asked for — and got — the retraction of an independent monitor's warning of imminent famine in north Gaza. The internationally Famine Early Warning System Network issued the warning this week. The new report had warned that starvation deaths in north Gaza could reach famine levels as soon as next month. It cited what it called Israel's “near-total blockade” of food and water. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, criticized the finding as inaccurate and irresponsible. The U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the famine-monitoring group, told the AP it had asked for and gotten the report's retraction. USAID officials tell The Associated Press that it had asked the group for greater review of discrepancies in some of the data. Trump has pressed for voting changes. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans in Congress plan to move quickly in their effort to overhaul the nation’s voting procedures, seeing an opportunity with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. They want to push through long-sought changes such as voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. They say the measures are needed to restore public confidence in elections. That's after an erosion of trust that Democrats note has been fueled by false claims from Donald Trump and his allies of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Democrats say they are willing to work with the GOP but want any changes to make it easier, not harder, to vote. Americans are exhausted by political news. TV ratings and a new AP-NORC poll show they're tuning out NEW YORK (AP) — A lot of Americans, after an intense presidential election campaign, are looking for a break in political news. That's evident in cable television news ratings and a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll found nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they've found the need recently to cut down on their consumption of political and government news. That's particularly true among Democrats following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, although a significant number of Republicans and independents feel the same way. Cable networks MSNBC and CNN are really seeing a slump. That's also happened in years past for networks that particularly appeal to supporters of one candidate. New York to charge fossil fuel companies for damage from climate change ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Large fossil fuel companies would have to pay fees to help New York fight the effects of climate change under a bill signed by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. The governor signed the new law Thursday. It requires companies responsible for substantial greenhouse gas emissions to pay into a state infrastructure fund for repairs or projects that help avoid future damage from climate change. Lawmakers approved the bill earlier this year. It's meant to make big oil and gas companies contribute to the cost of repairs after extreme weather events or for resiliency projects. Such projects may include restoring coastal wetlands or upgrading roads, bridges and water drainage systems. Legal challenges to the new law are expected. Aviation experts say Russia's air defense fire likely caused Azerbaijan plane crash as nation mourns Aviation experts say that Russian air defense fire was likely responsible for the Azerbaijani plane crash the day before that killed 38 people and left all 29 survivors injured. Azerbaijan is observing a nationwide day of mourning on Thursday for the victims of the crash. Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 was en route from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons yet unclear and crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan. Cellphone footage circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a steep descent before smashing into the ground in a fireball. Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy battlefield losses KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in Russia's Kursk region and face logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks. The intelligence agency said Thursday that Ukrainian strikes near Novoivanovka inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean units. Ukraine's president said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in the Kursk region. It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that North Korea had sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to Russia to help it in the almost 3-year war. How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze. Why this Mexican American woman played a vital role in the US sacramental peyote trade MIRANDO CITY, Texas (AP) — Amada Cardenas, a Mexican American woman who lived in the tiny border town of Mirando City in South Texas, played an important role in the history of the peyote trade. She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers who harvested and sold the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church in the 1930s. After her husband's death in 1967, Cardenas continued to welcome generations of Native American Church members to her home until her death in 2005, just before her 101st birthday.'Something you dream about': Jordan Binnington, Colton Parayko named to Canada's 4 Nations roster
