Colorado's Travis Hunter to enter draft, vows to be full-time CB and WR in NFL
WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors moved Monday to dismiss the criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election and to abandon the classified documents case against him, citing longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. The decision by special counsel Jack Smith, who had fiercely sought to hold Trump criminally accountable for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, represented the end of the federal effort against the former president following his election victory this month despite the election-related cases and multiple other unrelated criminal charges against him and is headed back to the White House. The decision, revealed in court filings, also amounts to a predictable but nonetheless stunning conclusion to criminal cases that had been seen as the most perilous of the multiple legal threats Trump has faced. It reflects the practical consequences of Trump’s victory, ensuring he enters office free from scrutiny over his hoarding of top secret documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Smith’s team emphasized that the move to abandon the prosecutions, in federal courts in Washington and Florida, was not a reflection of their view on the merits of the cases but rather a reflection of their commitment to longstanding department policy. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in Monday’s court filing in the election interference case. The decision was expected after Smith’s team began assessing how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case in the wake of Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated, and had vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. But it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of using “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will of voters after he lost to Biden. On a recent Wednesday, ten students filed into a classroom at Northern New Mexico College, in the town of Española, to learn about the dangers of nuclear radiation. The students ranged in age from nineteen to forty-four. Most of them were in a program designed to train radiation-control technicians to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the birthplace of the atomic bomb, which is once again rapidly expanding to supply the nation with nuclear weapons. The Lede Reporting and commentary on what you need to know today. Los Alamos was built in secret during the Second World War—J. Robert Oppenheimer directed the lab there as part of the Manhattan Project. The town hovers high above the Española valley, on a handsome mesa called the Pajarito Plateau. Originally, the only way to access the enclave was through two gates. Today, it accepts visitors but remains a company town, housing many of the lab's scientists and high-level staffers. The community has a population of about thirteen thousand, and boasts one of the nation's densest concentrations of millionaires. In New Mexico, such wealth is rare. Española, which sits on the Rio Grande and is a twenty-five-minute drive away, has a median household income of fifty thousand dollars, a poverty rate approaching twenty per cent, and an entrenched fentanyl crisis. Northern's small campus, where cottonwood trees front adobe-colored buildings, is usually quiet, since many of its students commute or study online. The school offers both a trades program and what it calls the most affordable bachelor's degree in the Southwest. Many students are studying for a career in social work, to combat the ravages of drugs, or hoping to secure a job at the lab. An Air Force veteran named Scott Braley teaches all of the school's radiation-safety courses. He often wears a T-shirt that reads "Radiate Positivity." When I visited, Braley and his students were midway through an introductory safety course. The lecture focussed not on... Abe StreepAP Sports SummaryBrief at 4:48 p.m. EST
Nedumangad CI, SIs come under attack; eight goons heldWhat will the new year bring? Based on this year, we can expect a wild ride. Here are 25 predictions for 2025. 1) President Trump, having run out of relatives to appoint to high office, will leave politics to spend less time with his family. 2) Raygun will continue to be the biggest source of family arguments since the COVID mandates, with the only allowed views being “angel” or “devil”. 3) Prince Andrew, revealed as a close contact of both a convicted paedophile and an alleged Chinese spy, will admit that he’s in the pay of the Australian Republican movement, as it’s the only way to explain the last five years. Reviving past fashion is going to become more difficult in 2025. 4) Reviving the fashion and music of past decades will become more difficult, on account that every period has been used up due to a collective failure to have any new ideas. By February 2025, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of 2024”. By March, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of February”. By April 20, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of April 3.” 5) Gina Rinehart will buy a huge new sheep farm but keep the traditional name: “Western Australia.” 6) Peter Dutton will find himself so addicted to negativity he will find himself unable to accept any view put by the government - angrily dismissing the observations that “the sky is blue”, “water is wet”, and “Australia, by and large, is a pretty good place to live.” Toto is set for a name change! Credit: Alex Ellinghausen 7) Anthony Albanese will rename his dog, worried that the current name of Toto sounds enough like Tonto to create expectations that his owner will be a man of action. 8) The leader of the Greens, Adam Bandt, will install a new phone answering system in his office, inviting people to leave a message “after the morally superior tone”. 9) Prince Harry’s popularity in the UK will reach a new low when he is voted off The Great British Bake Off, despite having never appeared on the show. Get excited for the Big Coke! Credit: iStock / Supplied 10) Peter Dutton, in the tradition of the Big Pineapple and the Big Prawn, will build an enormous Coke can in his electorate of Dickson in order to store the tonnes of nuclear waste, which, he has always argued, will somehow fit into a Coke can. 11) Trump will stage a meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. When asked, “Why meet with a deranged dictator with his finger on the nuclear button?” Kim will say: “Look, it’s only a meeting”. 12) Victoria will fall further from an AAA credit rating, with its score now reduced to “Aargh”. 13) Artificial intelligence will become sufficiently sophisticated that it finally wakes up to its own flaws, warning users that “the whole thing is a poor substitute for actual human thought”. 14) As the world’s concentration span continues to dip, TikTok videos will become increasingly short. By mid-year, the average video will be just two seconds long; by November, every video will be a .003-second subliminal advertisement for Temu. AI will see itself out. 15) Apple will continue to issue new versions of its products, each one representing an even smaller improvement on the last. This will not stop people queuing through the night to buy them. 16) Elon Musk will become so extreme and so powerful even Donald Trump will cut all ties. 17) Social media sites will continue to proliferate and become increasingly targeted as to age, education and politics until everyone has their own site, to which they – and only they - will be allowed to post, leading to a marvellous feeling since you always agree with what’s been said. 18) Putin will fall from power. (True. You watch.) 19) The self-checkout machines at Colesworth will become self-aware and take action against the profiteering of the supermarkets by giving away everything for free. This, and only this, will force Colesworth to re-employ some staff. 20) Coffee orders will become so long-winded – “a weak, soy macchiato but with hotter than normal soy thanks” – it will become impossible for the typical worker to fulfil any other task during their workday save for the consumption of beverages. 21) As the unemployment rate rises, bosses will ban working from home, leading to massive congestion on Sydney roads, with workers forced to abandon their cars in the nearest car park. The carpark, however, will retain its traditional name: the M5. 22) The last butcher, baker and greengrocer will close their doors, leaving Sydney with 10,563 Thai massage joints, 20,495 nail salons, and about a million gyms, all of them empty. 23) Hollywood will collapse after executives realise they have run out of Marvel comics to remake. 24) Politics, here and around the world, will become ever-more depressing, however... 25) We will survive. Happy New Year – and here’s to a less-bad-than-expected 2025.

Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players' association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. No further details on Carty's death were provided. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. More info Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has urged unpaid carers to check their eligibility for financial support from Social Security Scotland. The call comes following the figures in the latest census, which show that there are 45,300 unpaid carers in North Lanarkshire. Ms Adamson also warned that many people who care for a friend or loved one do not think of themselves as a carer. The MSP added that it was important to register with a local carers’ organisation for advice and support. Earlier in November, Scotland’s Carer Support Payment, which replaces Carer’s Allowance in Scotland, was rolled out across the country, expanding eligibility to those who are in full-time education, and introducing backdating for some applicants. Head to the App Store and never miss a beat in Lanarkshire - iOS - Android This joins a suite of support for carers only available in Scotland, like the Young Carer Grant and Carer’s Allowance Supplement. Ms Adamson said: “The nationwide rollout of the Carer Support Payment is a big moment for Scotland. “There are 45,300 unpaid carers across North Lanarkshire and that figure is likely an underestimate. “Unpaid carers are performing critical roles in our community; it is a difficult and demanding role. I want to ensure that no one is missing out on financial support that they are entitled to. “The SNP developed Social Security Scotland with the principles of dignity, fairness and respect in its founding principles. The new Carer Support Payment improves on Carer’s Allowance by making those in full time education eligible and introducing backdating for some applicants. “So if you are caring for someone – a neighbour, friend, or loved one – please check your eligibility for extra support through Social Security Scotland. And ensure you are registered with a carers’ organisation.” You can apply for Carer Support Payment using the online form, on the phone, by post, or in person. Thursday Night Football analyst Kirk Herbstreit used the Thursday, December 26 slog between the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks to question the leadership of Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams — which left plenty of viewers at home puzzled. Herbstreit, 55, was on the call for the game Thursday night, a sloppy affair that saw the Seahawks emerge victorious by a final score of 6-3 at Chicago’s Soldier Field. During the third quarter, Herbstreit turned his attention to Williams, 23, who the Bears selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. “I think the thing that remains to be seen — and only time will tell — is if he understands what it takes to be an NFL quarterback as far as the preparation, as far as first guy there, last guy to leave,” Herbstreit pondered to broadcast partner Al Michaels . Herbstreit then explained he had no real reason for questioning anything about Williams and his integrity inside the Bears facility. “I’m not suggesting he’s not doing those things,” he continued, “but just all of the little things that really make the great quarterbacks special.” The comments made by Herbstreit did not sit well with many on social media, especially Bears fans. One wrote via X , “Kirk Herbstreit suggested that it’s still uncertain whether Caleb Williams can handle the preparation and be the first one in and the last one out type of guy. Then he noted that he hasn’t heard anything to suggest Williams isn’t that type of player. So why bring it up at all?” Another said of Herbstreit, “Why would you suggest he’s not putting in the time, unless you have an idea if he is or he isn’t?” “Kirk Herbstreit has so obviously done 0 prep work on the Bears and Caleb’s season so far,” one viewer deduced. It has been a rough season for Williams and the Bears, who lost their 10th game in a row on Thursday night, dropping them to 4-12, the second-worst record in the NFC. Williams finished the game against the Seahawks 16-for-28 for 122 yards and one interception. As the clock ran out, the quarterback and his teammates were booed off the field in their final home appearance of the season. You have successfully subscribed. Their frustrations go way longer back than I’ve been here,” Williams told reporters after the game. “My job is to go out there and win games, and, you know, we don’t focus on outside noise.” He continued, “Fans are going to cheer and maybe boo sometimes, and you can’t react to that. It’s not something that we react to. We have a job to do.” The Bears close out the season on Sunday, January in Green Bay against the Packers. In 2018, two children in Samoa died after receiving measles vaccines, because the nurses who administered them had mistakenly mixed the vaccine powder with a muscle relaxant. Local vaccine skeptics seized on the tragedy, and the government temporarily suspended its immunization program. Children's Health Defense, an organization chaired by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., posted about the events on Facebook, where the group was one of the largest purchasers of anti-vaccine advertisements. The Samoan government reinstated the program, following an investigation. But immunization rates remained perilously low, with less than a third of infants getting vaccinated, and, a few months later, the country experienced a devastating measles outbreak. Nearly six thousand people were infected, and more than seventy children died. Kennedy, who had meanwhile visited the island, sent the Prime Minister a letter raising the "regrettable possibility that these children are casualties" of vaccination—not of a lack of it. He later called the outbreak "mild," and branded a Samoan vaccine opponent a "medical freedom hero." President-elect Donald Trump has now nominated Kennedy to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. If confirmed, he will oversee thirteen operating divisions, including the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. His reach would extend into virtually every corner of the nation's health-care infrastructure, from messaging on public health and investment in biomedical research to the approval of new drugs and the delivery of medical care. Trump, who in April called Kennedy a "Radical Left Lunatic," recently encouraged him to "go wild" on health, medicines, and "the food." Kennedy seems poised to oblige. In the past few months, Kennedy has indicated that he intends to reëxamine safety data for approved vaccines, advise municipalities not... Dhruv Khullar
