"The arrest of Rufat Safarov on trumped-up fraud and hooliganism charges is another glaring example of the Azerbaijani authorities' relentless efforts to silence dissenting voices in the country," Amnesty International said in a Wednesday statement. Safarov, a former prosecutor who heads the Defense Line human rights organization, was detained Tuesday and charged with fraud and hooliganism. He has been put on four months of pretrial detention. Azerbaijan's Ministry of Internal Affairs told VOA that Safarov's detention was related to a conflict between him and an individual over a land purchase. However, in a statement on social media written at his request, Safarov attributed his detention to being nominated for a human rights award in the United States. Their 19-9 win over the New York Jets in sub-freezing temperatures was not dominant — they trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, and they were outgained by nearly 100 yards — but Los Angeles still matched its largest margin of victory this season and continued to look like a looming nightmare for any postseason opponent. The Rams have now won eight of 10 since their bye week, when they were 1-4 and the NFL world wondered whether they would trade Super Bowl MVP receiver Cooper Kupp or even quarterback Matthew Stafford to spur their roster reboot. Los Angeles decided not to punt its season, and Sean McVay's team has driven from last to first. “You don’t want to ride the emotional roller coaster that these games can take you on,” McVay said Monday. “You do have the ability to stay steady, to stay the course and try to right the ship. Certainly that’s not complete by any stretch, but our guys have done an excellent job of not allowing the way that we started, especially in those first five games, to affect what we did coming off that bye.” The Rams also have clinched their seventh winning record in eight regular seasons under McVay — an achievement that shouldn’t get lost in the recent successes of a franchise that had 13 consecutive non-winning seasons before it rolled the dice and hired a 30-year-old head coach back in 2017. After winning it all in February 2022 and then having the worst season by a defending Super Bowl champion in NFL history, the Rams have made the most of their time in between true powerhouse status and a major rebuild. They also started slowly last year, entering their bye at 3-6 before a 7-1 finish. The Rams can become the first team in NFL history to make back-to-back postseason appearances after being three games under .500 each year. These Rams don't stand out on either side of the ball, although their talent level appears to be higher on offense than defense. The Rams have scored more than 30 points just once all season, and they managed only 31 points in their last two games combined. Their defense has allowed only one touchdown in the past two games — but right before that, Josh Allen and the Bills racked up 42 points and 445 yards in the most recent of a few defensive stinkers from LA this season. The Rams keep winning anyway, and now they can clinch McVay's fourth NFC West title by beating Seattle in two weeks. “Fortunately, we’re in a position where you don’t necessarily have to rely on other things to happen if you just handle your business,” McVay said. After a slow start caused partly by McVay being forced to abandon the running game when the Rams repeatedly fell behind early, the 2023 Pro Bowler has surged to career highs of 1,243 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns with his 122-yard performance in New York. What needs help Stafford's 110 yards passing were his fewest with the Rams and the second-fewest in his 16-year career from a full game. The blend of adventure, ocean views, and family traditions has created a childhood for our boys that is as magical as ours once were. A protester who lost his arm in July during a student revolution trying out a prosthetic arm from Robolife Technologies in Dhaka on Nov 21. DHAKA – Squeezing rubber-covered robotic prosthetic hands, Bangladeshi protesters wounded during the deadly revolution to topple autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina test out replacement arms for their lost limbs. “I’ll be able to do some everyday tasks with this artificial hand,” said student Hafeez Mohammad Hossain, 19, whose right hand was ripped off by gunfire on Aug 5. It was the same day protesters stormed Ms Hasina’s palace as she fled to India by helicopter. In the middle of the chaos, Mr Hossain said a police officer levelled a shotgun at him and fired. He described searing pain as gun pellets lacerated his back and leg. Surgeons picked out the gunshot, but were unable to save his hand. “I can’t write any more,” he said. “I’m struggling to learn how to write with my left hand.” On Nov 21 he was fitted with a prosthetic limb, alongside four other students who also lost their hands during the months-long protests in which at least 700 people were killed during a police crackdown. Robolife Technologies, a Bangladeshi organisation manufacturing artificial hands, said the prosthetic limbs use sensors connected to the nerves to move. The company says it allows users to grasp objects, to type and use a phone. “If you ask me whether they work like organic hands, I’d say no,” said Mr Antu Karim, who is working on the government-backed project to fit the limbs. “But these hands allow the boys to hold a glass if thirsty, or a spoon to eat,” he added. “At least, they won’t be looked down upon for not having hands.” ‘Rely on others’ Ms Hasina’s 15-year tenure saw widespread human rights abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killings of her political opponents. Limbless protesters held a rally earlier in November, demanding the interim government who took over after her fall support those injured in the protests. Many say they have not received the aid they need. The four other former protesters who had arms fitted on Nov 21 included Mohammad Mamun Mia, 32, a father of two, whose hand was hacked off by a gang he said was loyal to Ms Hasina’s Awami League party. The new arm is far from perfect, but it has made a huge difference. “I’ll be able to do some regular tasks with this hand,” he said, saying that while he cannot work driving a tractor in the fields again, he hopes now to open a small business. Mr Arif Hossain Sagar, 19, had his hand amputated after it failed to heal from an injury he sustained during the protests, and doctors worried about gangrene. “I can’t do any regular activities now,” Mr Sagar told AFP. “I rely on others for eating or bathing.” The new hand will return a degree of normality to his life, he said. Mr Nayeem Hasan, wounded when attackers pounced on him as he went to donate blood to help those injured after a fire, broke into tears. The new arm would help him fulfil his simple dream. “I have a one-year-old daughter who wants me to hold her,” he said. Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting the Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, pleaded not guilty on Dec. 23 in a Manhattan courtroom to multiple charges, including murder as an act of terrorism. Mangione, 26, also faces federal charges of murder and stalking that could carry the death penalty. For the state charges, the maximum sentence is life in prison without parole. Images appearing to be Mangione’s New York City Police Department (NYPD) mugshot went viral online amid his New York court appearance. Mangione was arrested by Altoona, Pennsylvania, police on Dec. 9 and was extradited to New York on Dec. 19 to face prosecution. Social media users sharing the image were critical of the NYPD because it appears like it was taken by a professional using “ photo shoot lighting .” Others questioned if it is real. This Threads post says , “NYPD official mug shot ARE WE KIDDING HERE ?!? Does Annie Liebovitz [sic] moonlight for the NYPD ?!?” Leibovitz is a famous portrait photographer. Is the image of Mangione a real NYPD mugshot? No, the image of Mangione is not a real NYPD mugshot. The image circulating as an official NYPD mugshot of Luigi Mangione is fake and was likely created using artificial intelligence (AI). VERIFY reviewed the NYPD’s social media accounts and website and found no evidence the image was ever posted on official channels. While the NYPD has posted recent images of Mangione, such as his arrival in New York , they have not released any official booking or arrest photos. “The NYPD does not disseminate arrest photos unless we are attempting to locate an individual,” the department said in an email to VERIFY. It is unclear if Mangione even had a booking photo taken upon his arrival in New York. A 2019 New York state law prohibits the release of arrest or booking photos unless their disclosure serves as a specific law enforcement purpose. If an NYPD booking photo of Mangione exists, it likely would not have been made public. The only official booking photos of Mangione released so far were by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 . Maria Bivens, the spokesperson with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, confirmed to VERIFY that the viral image was not distributed by their department. Using RevEye, a reverse image search tool, VERIFY found the viral image has never been published by credible news outlets as an official booking photo. It was also not published by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office , which is prosecuting the case, or the Department of Justice , which brought the federal charges. There are clues that suggest the image was generated with AI. For instance, the mole on Mangione’s right cheek is misplaced in the fake image, and the white undershirt disappears entirely on one side of his neck. The Romans serve spaghetti with anchovies, while in Naples, it’s vermicelli with clams, mussels or razor clams. Smelt is battered and fried, while anchovies are often served as a salad with oranges and hard-boiled eggs. As for eel, in Venice it is left unskinned and spit-roasted with bay leaves. “They say ... there is something tranquilizing about eel cooked this way, putting even the grumpiest person in a suitably benevolent mood for Christmas.” (Consider this if you expect political disputes to break out over dinner.)
