NEW DELHI: Eyeing a Euro 5 billion deal to supply six diesel-electric stealth submarines to the Indian Navy, German defence major ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) on Friday said it has plans to make India a global hub for construction of submarines and warships in view of rise in demands of naval platforms. TKMS CEO Oliver Burkhard said if his company wins the race for the mega deal, it could be the beginning of a longstanding partnership with India as there is bipartisan support in Germany to ramp up overall bilateral defence ties. In an exclusive interview to PTI Videos, Burkhard said the demands for naval platforms are going to rise significantly because of geopolitical tensions and conflict, and India is well-positioned to emerge as a hub for construction of submarines and warships. The German ship-builder has partnered with India's state-run Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in jointly bidding for the Rs 44,000 crore (Euro 5 billion) submarine deal, billed as one of the biggest 'Make in India' projects in recent years. The TKMS-MDL combine is competing with the venture between Spanish defence major Navantia and Larsen & Toubro Ltd. The defence ministry is in the process of finalising the winner of the Project 75 India (P75-I). "It is not only about this contract. Beyond that (contract), I think India could be a hub for submarine production. This is also part of (our) plan," Burkhard told PTI Videos. The TKMS CEO said his company is committed to share required technologies with India and help the country emerge as a hub for construction of submarines and warships for supplying to other countries. Burkhard said construction of submarines in India would be an attractive proposition as the cost will be on the lower side compared to that in any other European country. The TKMS would like to join hands with the MDL to produce submarines for supplying to other countries, he said. He suggested that deeper collaboration between India and Germany was also critical to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific in view of China's increasing assertiveness in the region. "Our boats will probably fit best to what India demands. We are the world market leader in the non-nuclear submarine sector. We have installed a lot of so-called air independent propulsion, which is one of the needs India raised," the TKMS CEO said. "Our boats are proven. Fifty-one of them are operating around the world. Several navies are running our boats," he added. Burkhard even said if India has the submarines produced by the TKMS-MDL combine, then security of the country will be enhanced significantly. On overall geo-political tensions and ways to deal with them, TKMS CEO said Europe now takes India very seriously as this region is one of the most critical in the world. "Our defence minister had said we need to have relations with India like we have with Japan and Australia," he said, emphasising that Germany is fully committed to enhance defence ties with India. In June 2021, the defence ministry cleared the mega project to procure six conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. The submarines are expected to have significant local content. The submarines are set to be built under the much-talked-about strategic partnership model that allows domestic defence manufacturers to join hands with leading foreign defence majors to produce high-end military platforms to reduce import dependence. India and Germany have had a strategic partnership since 2000, which has been strengthened through inter-governmental consultations since 2011 at the level of heads of government. The world has become a touchscreen phenomenon and youngsters these days are fuelled by instant fame and money, but such a desire is not sustainable, philanthropist and author Sudha Murty said on Saturday. Youngsters like you are always fuelled by instant fame and instant money. That is not sustainable. Instant fame, nobody gets," the Rajya Sabha MP said. She advised the student to remember that life does not run on Facebook likes and dislikes, or followers or influencers. "You have to make your mind healthy along with your body," she added. The philanthropist said she failed miserably many times but learned a lesson from every failure. "As long as it is right legally and ethically, try new things, and from failure learn new things," she said. Murty recalled that she learnt the greatest philosophies in life from the poorest people who did not know English. She also observed that children today are not connected to the people, especially the poor. "India does not mean software, it does not mean Bollywood, it is not only money. India means those people who will perish without your help. And you are the catalyst in this improvement of our country," she said. "Your life after here should be guided by your own conscience. But life is not that difficult. It will not be that easy either. It will somewhere be in the middle," Murty told the graduating students at the 6th convocation ceremony of Anant National University . Murty, who is married to the co-founder of tech giant Infosys N R Narayana Murthy, observed that creativity is a basic sign of progress and helps cut the boredom of the mundane world. "For creativity, you require great imagination... Imagination should be built up with children, and you can imagine as much as possible depending on your strength. And that you should do at home as parents," she said. She said there was no shortcut to success other than hard work. Disappointments are also needed in life as one becomes a "soft" person without resistance, she added. Murty urged the graduates to help others saying it gives tremendous happiness. She also said that one should know technology, otherwise one will perish. North America’s top professional sports leagues have issued warnings to their players about a growing threat from high-tech, organized burglary rings, whose tools of choice are passports, cutting-edge technology and a 90-day calendar. The NBA memo, citing FBI intelligence, specifically linked the crimes to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that target “professional athletes and other high-net-worth individuals.” These groups are known for using “advanced techniques” such as pre-surveillance, drones, signal-jamming devices and other cutting-edge technology. The NFL highlighted the risks posed by what it called “organized and skilled groups” of burglars targeting wealthy athletes. While the warnings did not name victims, they were issued after the homes of athletes including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis were recently burglarized. The tactics described in the memos bear a striking resemblance to a wave of break-ins targeting affluent residents in Southern California . Federal and local officials from Los Angeles and Orange County have reported a spike in break-ins by what they call “burglary tourists” — criminals from Central and South America who legally enter the U.S. on 90-day tourist visas under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). But instead of packing swimsuits and sunscreen, police said these individuals are armed with disguises, video equipment, trail cameras and Wi-Fi jammers. They target wealthy neighborhoods and gated communities before moving on to avoid detection. These “burglary tourists” have been at work for at least five years, but their operations have intensified in recent times as information about addresses and even pictures of properties have become increasingly accessible. “Transnational gangs might not know everything about the house that they are breaking into,” LAPD Chief of Detectives Alan Hamilton told NBC News on Friday. “But there’s always a possibility these suspects know who they are and monitor the athletes’ social media and movements.” Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley’s home was also burglarized in September while he was attending an NFL game, The Minnesota Star Tribune reported . Portis posted on Instagram on Nov. 3 saying his “prized possessions” were stolen from his home during his team’s game the previous day. Kelce’s and Mahomes’ homes in Kansas City were broken into hours apart in October. The burglars made off with $20,000 in cash and caused $1,000 in damage to Kelce’s home, according to a police report obtained by NBC affiliate KSHB of Kansas City . Mahomes has called the ordeal “frustrating” and “disappointing.” This trend has spread to other cities including Chicago, Houston and Dallas. “Law enforcement has long recognized this pattern of crimes across the Midwest,” Hamilton said. “It’s not something they have been immune to.” Law enforcement from coast to coast, including the FBI, has been tracking these criminal networks for years, with suspects linked to South American gangs appearing in nearly every state, Hamilton said. “It’s totally military”-level technology, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer told NBC News over the summer. “People we’ve arrested here in Orange County have criminal records coming from the country of Chile.” If Southern California law enforcement has made progress in reducing these crimes, it may be driving more of these operations to other regions of the country. The NBA and NFL urged players to take preventive measures, such as activating alarm systems and surveillance cameras, securing valuables in safes and avoid oversharing on social media. “The FBI reported that, in most of the incidents, the homes were equipped with alarm systems that were not activated,” reads the NBA memo obtained by NBC News on Friday. “The FBI also reported that the homes were all unoccupied and, in most cases, no dogs were present.” This story first appeared on NBCNews.com. The Detroit Lions will play without two high draft picks in rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while possibly getting back veteran Emmanuel Moseley against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Arnold was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out because of a groin injury. He was limited at practice on Thursday and participated in a full practice on Friday. The Lions drafted Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Arnold, 21, has started all 10 games and has 38 tackles and six passes defended. Rakestraw (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve after not practicing all week. He already had been ruled out for Sunday's game. Detroit picked Rakestraw in the second round (61st overall) out of Missouri. He has played in eight games and has six tackles. Rakestraw, 22, has played on 46 defensive snaps (8 percent) and 95 special teams snaps (42 percent). Moseley had full practice sessions all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday but was listed as questionable for Sunday. The 28-year-old is in his second season with Detroit and appeared in one game last season before going on IR in October 2023. He was placed on IR on Aug. 27 with a designation to return. Moseley played from 2018-22 for the San Francisco 49ers and had 162 tackles, four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and 33 passes defensed in 46 games (33 starts). Detroit elevated linebacker David Long on Saturday for game day. Long, 28, signed with the practice squad on Tuesday after the Miami Dolphins released him on Nov. 13. He had started six of eight games for the Dolphins this season and had 38 tackles. In other Lions news, the NFL fined wide receiver Jameson Williams $19,697 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making an obscene gesture during a touchdown celebration in last Sunday's 52-6 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL Network reported Saturday. Williams, 23, scored on a 65-yard pass from Jared Goff with 12:55 remaining in the third quarter. --Field Level MediaChhapra: In an attempt to ensure foolproof security arrangement and assist visitors at the Sonepur fair , local police have roped in about 300 volunteers , including 22 girls and 85 senior citizens with good repute, in strengthening vigilance across the mela area.
