One week into a new Syria, rebels aim for normalcy and Syrians vow not to be silent again DAMASCUS (AP) — A transformation has started to take place in the week since the unexpected overthrow of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Suddenly in charge, the rebels have been met with a mix of excitement, grief and hope. And so far the transition has been surprisingly smooth. Reports of reprisals, revenge killings and sectarian violence are minimal, looting and destruction has been quickly contained. But there are a million ways it could go wrong. Syria is broken and isolated after five decades of Assad family rule. Families have been torn apart by war, former prisoners are traumatized, and tens of thousands of detainees remain missing. The economy is wrecked, poverty is widespread, inflation and unemployment are high. Corruption seeps through daily life. Christians in Syria mark country's transformation with tears as UN envoy urges an end to sanctions DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — In churches across long-stifled Syria, Christians have marked the first Sunday services since Bashar Assad’s ouster in an air of transformation. Some were in tears, others clasped their hands in prayer. The U.N. envoy for Syria is calling for a quick end to Western sanctions as the country’s new leaders and regional and global powers discuss the way forward. The Syrian government has been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and others for years as a result of Assad’s brutal response to what began as peaceful anti-government protests in 2011 and spiraled into civil war. Israel will close its Ireland embassy over Gaza tensions as Palestinian death toll nears 45,000 DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel says it will close its embassy in Ireland as relations deteriorate over the war in Gaza, where Palestinian medical officials say new Israeli airstrikes have killed over 30 people including children. Israel's decision to close the embassy came in response to what Israel’s foreign minister has described as Ireland's “extreme anti-Israel policies.” Ireland earlier announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state. And the Irish cabinet last week decided to formally intervene in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll in the war is approaching 45,000. The GOP stoked fears of noncitizens voting. Cases in Ohio show how rhetoric and reality diverge AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's Republican secretary of state and attorney general sought to reassure voters before the November election that the state's elections were being vigorously protected against the possibility of immigrants voting illegally. That push coincided with a national Republican messaging strategy warning that potentially thousands of ineligible voters would be voting. The officials' efforts in Ohio led to charges against just six noncitizens in a state with 8 million registered voters. That outcome and the stories of some of those now facing charges show the gap both in Ohio and across the United States between the rhetoric about noncitizen voting and the reality that it's rare and not part of a coordinated scheme to throw elections. South Korean leaders seek calm after Yoon is impeached SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition leader has offered to work with the government to ease the political tumult, a day after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol over a short-lived attempt to impose martial law. Liberal Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, whose party holds a majority in the National Assembly, urged the Constitutional Court to rule swiftly on Yoon’s impeachment and proposed a special council for policy cooperation between the government and parliament. Yoon’s powers have been suspended until the court decides whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. If Yoon is dismissed, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days. Storms across US bring heavy snow, dangerous ice and a tornado in California OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Inclement weather has plagued areas of the U.S. in the first half of the weekend, with dangerous conditions including heavy snow, a major ice storm and unusual tornado activity. An ice storm beginning Friday created treacherous driving conditions across Iowa and eastern Nebraska. More than 33 inches of snow was reported near Orchard Park, New York, which is often a landing point for lake-effect snow. On Saturday, a tornado touched down in Scotts Valley, California, causing damage and several injuries. In San Francisco, a storm damaged trees and roofs and prompted a tornado warning, which was a first for a city that has not experienced a tornado since 2005. Small businesses say cautious shoppers are seeking 'cozy' and 'festive' this holiday season With a late Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year, and owners of small retail shops say that people have been quick to snap up holiday décor early, along with gifts for others and themselves. Cozy items like sweaters are popular so far. Businesses are also holding special events to get shoppers in the door. But there’s little sense of the freewheeling spending that occurred during the pandemic. Overall, The National Retail Federation predicts retail sales in November and December will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. US agencies should use advanced technology to identify mysterious drones, Schumer says After weeks of fear and bewilderment about the drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the federal government to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify and ultimately stop the airborne pests. The New York Democrat is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy advanced technology to identify and track drones back to their landing spots. That is according to briefings from his office. Federal authorities have said that the drones do not appear to be linked to foreign governments. West Africa regional bloc approves exit timeline for 3 coup-hit member states ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS has approved an exit timeline for three coup-hit nations. It comes after a nearly yearlong process of mediation to avert the unprecedented disintegration of the grouping. The president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said in a statement: “The authority decides to set the period from 29 January, 2025 to 29 July 2025 as a transitional period and to keep ECOWAS doors open to the three countries during the transition period." In a first in the 15-nation bloc’s nearly 50 years of existence, the military juntas of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced in January that they decided to leave ECOWAS. Pope Francis makes 1st papal visit to France's Corsica awash in expressions of popular piety AJACCIO, Corsica (AP) — Pope Francis on the first papal visit ever to the French island of Corsica on Sunday called for a dynamic form of laicism, promoting the kind of popular piety that distinguishes the Mediterranean island from secular France as a bridge between religious and civic society. The one-day visit to Corsica’s capital Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon, on Sunday is one of the briefest of his papacy beyond Italy’s borders, just about nine hours on the ground, including a 40-minute visit with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is the first papal visit ever to the island, which Genoa ceded to France in 1768 and is located closer to the Italian mainland than France.HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. It's Features and Applications 11-26-2024 10:20 PM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction Press release from: ABNewswire Understanding Orange Silica Gel: Uses, Benefits, and Safety Silica gel is a well-known desiccant, commonly used to control humidity and moisture in various products. Among the different types of silica gel available, orange silica gel stands out due to its unique properties and applications. This article will delve into the characteristics, uses, benefits, and safety considerations of orange silica gel, providing a comprehensive overview of this versatile material. What is Orange Silica Gel? Orange silica gel is a form of silica gel that has been treated with a moisture indicator, typically cobalt chloride, which gives it its distinctive orange color. This type of silica gel is designed to absorb moisture from the air, helping to keep products dry and free from mold, mildew, and other moisture-related issues. The color change from orange to green indicates the saturation level of the gel, making it easy to monitor its effectiveness. Composition and Properties Silica gel is primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), a naturally occurring mineral. The orange color in orange silica gel is due to the presence of cobalt chloride, which is a hygroscopic compound that changes color based on the moisture content in the environment. When the gel is dry, it appears orange, but as it absorbs moisture, it transitions to a greenish hue. This color change is a crucial feature that allows users to determine when the silica gel needs to be replaced or regenerated. Uses of Orange Silica Gel Orange silica gel has a wide range of applications across various industries. Some of the most common uses include: 1. Food Preservation One of the primary uses of orange silica gel is in food packaging. It helps to maintain the freshness of food products by absorbing excess moisture, which can lead to spoilage. By keeping the humidity levels low, orange silica gel extends the shelf life of dried fruits, snacks, and other moisture-sensitive items. 2. Electronics Protection In the electronics industry, orange silica gel is often used to protect sensitive equipment from moisture damage. It is commonly found in packaging for electronic devices, such as smartphones, cameras, and computers. By absorbing moisture, it helps prevent corrosion and other moisture-related issues that can compromise the functionality of electronic components. 3. Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics The pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries also utilize orange silica gel to maintain product integrity. Moisture can adversely affect the stability and efficacy of medications and cosmetic products. By incorporating orange silica gel into packaging, manufacturers can ensure that their products remain dry and effective for longer periods. 4. Storage and Shipping Orange silica gel is widely used in storage and shipping applications to protect goods from moisture damage. Whether it's clothing, leather goods, or machinery, keeping moisture at bay is essential to prevent mold growth and deterioration. Many shipping containers and storage boxes are equipped with packets of orange silica gel to safeguard their contents. 5. Household Use In households, orange silica gel can be used in various ways, such as in closets, drawers, and storage bins. Placing packets of orange silica gel in these areas helps to absorb excess moisture, preventing musty odors and protecting items from damage. It is particularly useful in humid climates where moisture levels can be high. Benefits of Orange Silica Gel The benefits of using orange silica gel are numerous: 1. Moisture Control The primary advantage of orange silica gel is its ability to control moisture levels effectively. By absorbing excess humidity, it helps to prevent mold, mildew, and other moisture-related problems. 2. Visual Indicator The color-changing property of orange silica gel serves as a visual indicator of its moisture absorption capacity. This feature allows users to easily monitor the effectiveness of the gel and know when it needs to be replaced or regenerated. 3. Versatility Orange silica gel is versatile and can be used in various applications, from food preservation to electronics protection. Its adaptability makes it a valuable tool in many industries. 4. Cost-Effective Solution Using orange silica gel is a cost-effective way to protect products from moisture damage. It is relatively inexpensive and can save businesses and consumers money by extending the shelf life of products and reducing waste. Safety Considerations While orange silica gel is generally safe to use, there are some important safety considerations to keep in mind: 1. Toxicity of Cobalt Chloride Cobalt chloride, the compound that gives orange silica gel its color, is considered hazardous. It can be toxic if ingested or inhaled in large quantities. Therefore, it is essential to keep orange silica gel out of reach of children and pets and to avoid direct contact with the skin. 2. Proper Disposal When disposing of used orange silica gel, it is crucial to follow local regulations regarding hazardous waste. Some regions may have specific guidelines for disposing of materials containing cobalt chloride. 3. Regeneration Process Orange silica gel can be regenerated by heating it in an oven to remove the absorbed moisture. However, this process should be done with caution, as overheating can cause the gel to break down or release harmful fumes. Conclusion Orange silica gel is a valuable desiccant with a wide range of applications across various industries. Its ability to control moisture, combined with its visual indicator feature, makes it an effective solution for preserving products and protecting them from moisture damage. While it offers numerous benefits, it is essential to handle it safely and dispose of it properly. Whether used in food packaging, electronics, or household storage, orange silica gel plays a crucial role in maintaining product integrity and extending shelf life. Opinion editor’s note: Strib Voices publishes letters from readers online and in print each day. To contribute, click here . ••• President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, has generated a fair amount of criticism from Democrats (“Biden issues full pardon to son Hunter,” front page, Dec. 2 and “I beg your pardon,” Strib Voices, Dec. 3). They bemoan the loss of the moral high ground against an ascendant Donald Trump. The MAGA crowd is using the pardon as yet another stick with which to metaphorically beat Democrats over their heads and shoulders. But the bigger impact of this pardon may have been missed in the hue and cry of hypocrisy. When Democrats look back, they might point to Hunter Biden’s pardon as the presage of a new era in how Democrats fight in the political arena. Up until this pardon, Democrats hewed to notions of political norms no longer honored or practiced by the GOP and its standard-bearer. Democrats fought with “joy,” and used calm reasoning in the face of ignorance. The result was losing the White House. The Hunter Biden pardon ignored those Marquess of Queensberry rules and strategies and plowed headlong into brutal new territory. In the movie “The Untouchables,” Elliot Ness struggled with enforcing prohibition laws against Al Capone. Ness was not effective until he met Jim Malone, a police officer played by Sean Connery. Malone advised Ness, “You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way!” The Hunter Biden pardon, like Malone’s advice to Ness, might inspire other Democrats to adopt more hardball tactics. Philip Trobaugh, St. Paul ••• As a father, I can understand why Joe Biden pardoned his son. It was, to him, an act of mercy and love. As a citizen, I am dismayed. President Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter Biden, though I believe done out of love for his son (think about your child for a second if you had this same power), opens Pandora’s box for future presidents to pardon as an act of vengeance and justify it. And it opens a wider ability to circumvent the justice system. Just wait ’til the prison gates are opened for the insurrectionists of Jan. 6, 2021. Yes, Trump was going to do it anyway (I hear the screams of protest and part of me screams that out, too). But now he (or any future president) can justify the thousand acts of retribution by twisting and elevating this one decision made by President Biden. It isn’t fair, but it is true. Joe Biden, as a dad, did what many of us would do. Joe Biden as president made a mistake that will hurt this country down the road. Not unlike Ruth Bader Ginsburg not stepping down before her death when on some level she had to have known the stakes, and our country is suffering for it now. Love and hubris cloud the vision of every one of us. So bring on Pandora’s box. And hope that, in some way, one act of understandable, misguided love is worth a thousand acts of vengeance in the end. Neal Hagberg, Minneapolis ••• Now that President Biden has pardoned his son Hunter Biden because of selective and unfair prosecution brought on by political pressure on federal prosecutors, I am assuming he will shortly be pardoning President-elect Trump for all of his prosecutions brought on by the same reasons and in the same manner? Highly doubtful as the Democratic elite tend to think most laws don’t apply to them if, in their minds, not obeying the law as it pertains to them is the right thing to do. Bruce Debele, Maple Grove ••• Pardoning Hunter Biden may sully Joe Biden’s legacy as president, but it cements his legacy as a loving Dad. I think that’s more important to him. Robert Veitch, Richfield ••• I think that President Biden made an error in judgment by pardoning his son Hunter Biden. Whether the President’s decision hurts his party or becomes political gain for Republicans is very much a side issue. I know a lot of loving parents, children and siblings who have tried to “help” addicts by paying their bills, covering up or lying about their behavior, or trying their very best to shield addicts from facing the consequences of their behavior. They think that these are loving things to do. However, the typical result is that addicts keep acting out and delay getting the help they need to recover. In essence, “enabling” actually delays the addict’s recovery and keeps him/her from getting healthy. So, I’m sad that President Biden pardoned his son. The president’s action is very likely to cause greater harm to his son Hunter Biden in the long run. The most loving thing the President could have done would have been not to intervene and let his son face the consequences of his behavior. Pardoning Hunter Biden was not a prudent thing to do! There are good programs to help relatives of addicts. I hope that the Bidens find out one that works for them. Guy M. Marzano, Wayzata ••• I’m glad President Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden. Hunter Biden’s nonviolent crimes were a part of his life as an addict, and now he has been sober for 5 1/2 years. Republican legislators, dominated by a man who himself has escaped sentencing after conviction of 34 felonies, have hounded Hunter Biden for many years, not because of what he did, but because he is Joe Biden’s son. Joe Biden has been a good president, and before that, a good senator, serving our country for more than 50 years. Now he is unappreciated and old, and what he has left in life is his family, including his prodigal son, Hunter Biden. I’m happy for the time they have left to share. John Stuart, Minneapolis ••• Give me a break. Trump is complaining about Joe Biden pardoning his son, when he himself is planning on pardoning the insurrectionists who tried to overthrow our government on Jan. 6, 2021? Including himself? Sorry, not buying it. Deb Nelson, Maple Grove ••• Looking at the bright side of President Biden’s full and unconditional pardon of his son Hunter Biden for any offenses committed during the 10-plus year period from Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 1, 2024, at least we shouldn’t now have to continue to suffer through the left beginning every mention of President-elect Trump with the phrases “convicted felon” and “rule of law.” As President Biden observed with regard to his son, “raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.” What’s sauce for the goose ... Charles Spevacek, Minneapolis ••• Can we please stop with the double standards? So Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden. I know he said he wouldn’t, but didn’t Trump repeatedly say he knew nothing about Project 2025 and now is packing his administration with its collaborators? And before you say Joe Biden is setting an awful precedent, at the end of his last term, Trump issued a full and unconditional pardon to his daughter Ivanka Trump’s father-in-law and just tapped him to be ambassador to France. If there’s to be outrage, it needs to be on both sides. Wendy Jacobson, Minneapolis ••• No one is above the law! Except my son Hunter. Chad Hagen, Cook, Minn. ••• Pardon me, but President Biden has every right to change his mind and pardon his son Hunter Biden, even after months of stating the opposite. President-elect Trump and his I’ve-got-mine-so-forget-about-you administration will undoubtedly shout from the rooftops that President Biden reneged on his promise to not pardon his son. Yep, the current president of the United States on his way out of office succumbed to parental anguish and feelings that justice had already been accomplished. So what? Give the guy a break! If Trump were in the same position, what would he do? I think we all know the answer to that one. Sharon E. Canadian freestyle skier star Mikael Kingsbury is juggling both moguls and fatherhood. The 32-year-old Olympic and world champion from Deux-Montagnes, Que., opens his World Cup season Saturday in Ruka, Finland, with partner Laurence Mongeon and their infant son Henrik in tow. Henrik was born Aug. 25. "It changes your life, that's for sure," Kingsbury said Tuesday from Ruka in a media conference call. "Get used to waking up in the middle of the night, but at the same time, it is the most beautiful thing in the world. "It brings a beautiful balance to my career." While Kingsbury acknowledges there are great hockey players named Henrik, he says the inspiration for the name was his niece liking a boy named Henrik in her kindergarten class. "I always liked the name anyway," Kingsbury said. "Laurence and I agree it fits his face. "I didn't ski as much this summer because I wanted to be home and I wanted to be present. We're five weeks on the road for the start of this season, so I couldn't see myself doing five weeks without seeing my kid. "I would have missed my family too much, so I brought them on the road for three weeks." Regarded as the most dominant moguls skier of all time, the Canadian achieved another significant milestone last season when he surpassed Swedish alpine skier Ingemar Stenmark for the most all-time World Cup victories by a male athlete in any ski discipline. Kingsbury embarks on his 16th World Cup season with a career 90 victories. He's finished in the medals in 129 of 151 career World Cup starts. But while Kingsbury claimed last season's dual moguls crown, Japan's Ikuma Horishima challenged Kingsbury's reign by claiming his first crystal globe in moguls. "The mindset is still the same. The goals are still the same," Kingsbury said. "Coming into the season, I want to focus on one race at a time. That's how you get to a crystal globe. "The main focus is being consistent, staying healthy to start the season, try to get the momentum of the start and stay healthy until the end of this season. "I usually start strong, and I can finish very strong, and that's how you win crystal globes." Kingsbury won an Olympic moguls gold medal in 2018 and silver in both 2014 and 2022. Dual moguls makes its Olympic debut in 2026 in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Kingsbury has swept both moguls and dual moguls gold medals in three straight world championships. He'll attempt the double a fourth time March 18-21 in Engadin, Switzerland. "Henrik and my family now are my priority and skiing comes second, but I know I can still win," Kingsbury said. "It's going to be different. My family is going to be home and it might be a bit more difficult, but at the same time I see a lot of positive in being a dad. I feel way more relaxed on the mountain." One secret to Kingsbury's success has been his durability. His only major injury hiccup so far was fracturing two vertebrae in his back training in Ruka ahead of the 2020-21 season. Kingsbury sat out the first three World Cups and won the fourth upon return to action. He's closer to the end of his career than the beginning, so quality training, not quantity, is important to him. "As I get older, I cannot do too much, but I've got to do the right amount and make sure I can peak in 2026," he explained. "The challenge is going to be the best dad I can and the best skier I can and try to manage in the middle. It's never going to be perfect, but I'm to do as best as I can and make sure I'm ready in 2026. "I feel fortunate for all the team (members) that I have around me, teammates, and all the coaches and staff that are working with me. They're going to make my life easy when it's going to be difficult." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press
Candy, ice and lottery tickets have long been impulse items sold at checkouts in American grocery stores. Now bullets are joining the list of merchandise peddled to consumers as they exit at a growing number of stores around the country. Dallas-based start-up American Rounds rolled its first automated retail ammo machine into a Fresh Value grocery store in Pell City, Alabama, late in 2023, selling various brands of rifle, shotgun and handgun ammo. The company advertises its machines as a safer and more convenient way to buy ammo than at a large retail store or online. But public health experts have questioned whether the company’s suicide prevention efforts are sufficient, and elected officials in areas where machines were set up have worried that the easy availability of ammunition could lead to impulsive purchases by people who seek to do harm. “If you’re in the ammunition space ... you have a social responsibility to make things as safe as possible while maintaining the integrity of the Second Amendment,” American Rounds CEO Grant Magers told The Washington Post. “We wanted to accomplish both.” The ammunition kiosks operate in nearly a dozen grocery stores across Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama and Colorado. Fresh Value, Lowe’s Market and Super C Mart all host the kiosks at some store locations. Representatives for all three companies declined to comment when reached by The Post. In a 2023 promotional video for the rollout of American Rounds kiosks, Fresh Value Chief Operating Officer Terry Stanley said the company was “excited to offer ... what we think is the first ammo kiosk.” “There is no doubt that foot traffic will increase based on the feedback that we’ve gotten,” Stanley said. “We’re super excited not only to have it here, but in other locations in Fresh Value as well.” Since its kiosks made headlines in July, Magers said, American Rounds has signed over 200 contracts and received requests for machines in nearly every state. But the machines have still been placed in only a handful of new locations. Magers cited ongoing contract negotiations and production limits as causes for delay and said the company’s goal is to ship around 100 units in 2025. “We knew we had something special, but we didn’t know that it was going to explode like that,” Magers said. The machines use a touch screen to display their goods — there is no transparent glass panel to view the ammo inside, as with other types of vending machines. “These are double-walled steel, 2,000-pound machines that are always indoors under security cameras,” Magers said. “(Ammo is) not sitting on a shelf, you know, like your bread aisle in the grocery store.” Introducing American Rounds U.S.A. The machine uses the same identity verification technology as the Transportation Security Administration at airport checkpoints, Magers said. There is no federal requirement that sellers verify a buyer’s ID before an ammo sale, but federal law does limit the types of rounds people under 21 can purchase. “We’re the only company in America that say can say 100 percent, every (ammo) purchase, that there’s an ID verified,” Magers said. Research indicates a correlation between firearm availability and suicide, which experts say is often an impulsive act, especially in rural areas similar to those where American Rounds machines operate, though the kiosks sell only ammunition and not firearms themselves. American Rounds says it’s aware of that phenomenon and has partnered with a pro-Second Amendment mental health nonprofit, Walk the Talk America, to reach kiosk customers in crisis. The company displays ads for mental health screenings on its machines, which also show customers the national suicide hotline phone number, 988, before every use. “We’re offering material for people to get help that need help,” Magers said. But public health experts questioned the effectiveness of the safeguards. Paul Nestadt, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, compared the machine’s warnings to signs on bridges saying, “Don’t jump. Seek help.” “We’ve studied those. They’re not effective,” Nestadt said. “If someone is impulsively going to attempt suicide, that sign doesn’t seem to stop them.” If someone is impulsively going to attempt suicide, that sign doesn't seem to stop them. Nestadt said a common myth about suicide is that it often involves a plan, while in reality the majority of attempts are impulsive. “By making (ammo) more accessible, there’s less time for that impulse to pass, for the heat to die down,” Nestadt said. Magers responded to Nestadt’s analogy by highlighting the safety steps the company has already taken: raising age limits and requiring IDs. He compared his company’s approach to safety to that of a car manufacturer. “People still have car accidents and have tragedy, but they take steps to make it safer,” Magers said. “They don’t just say, ‘Okay, we’re not going to use cars anymore.'” Success is not given... it's earned!!! We’ve been studying this for decades.” Ammo sales have been good and are steadily rising as buyers grow familiar with the machines, according to Magers, though American Rounds did remove one machine in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in July due to poor sales. The machine-generated just four total sales in seven months, according to a Fresh Value statement provided to WBRC 6 News. “That location, just for whatever reason, just didn’t generate any (sales),” Magers said. The same machine dispensed controversy when Kip Tyner, Tuscaloosa City Council president, raised constituent concerns at a council meeting on the issue. Tyner told WBRC 6 News he is not against guns but thought the machines were a joke at first and “didn’t like it at all.” “We know we’ve got a problem with guns — and people that have guns, I should say,” Tyner said. “So why make it more convenient to buy ammunition?” Magers said the machine’s removal took place before to the council meeting and had no connection.
