Jets' Ulbrich says Rodgers 'absolutely' remains the team's starting quarterback
Have the New York Jets finally figured out the right way to locate top talent in front-office positions? After a week full of anonymous headlines, it appears that may be the case. Last week, numerous reports from The Athletic detailed the Jets as a team too focused on the opinion of "non-football people" in prominent roles. Even owner Woody Johnson was said to be too interested in the opinions of fans on social media than the opinions of the people paid to do their jobs. Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images Those same reports have seemed to light a fire for Johnson that his hiring process will need help from independent consultants that have prior executive experience. His latest agreement has done exactly that. New York has hired the 33rd Team in a consulting role to assist in identifying and vetting candidates and interviews for their GM and HC positions. Former Jets general manager and founder of the 33rd Team, Mike Tannenbaum, and former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman are expected to help the most for the Jets. The news of Gang Green going back to a former team executive, as well as a popular league executive in Spielman should be great news for the fanbase. Too many times in the past it has felt that the organization has taken opinions from people without scouting or proper league experience. It's led to different opinions on how to improve the organization in the middle of a 13-year postseason-less drought. What New York needs more than anything is a single plan on how to improve the team both inside and out. That won't happen until they get the right general manager in the building, then the head coach, then the quarterback, and so on. Related: Jets Fans Deserve Better After Headline Hell Bringing in two consultants like Tannenbaum and Spielman is exactly what the Washington Commanders did to improve their fortunes this past offseason. It led to the hiring of Adam Peters and Dan Quinn. Washington now has double the amount of wins they recorded the season prior and is a clear favorite to reach the playoffs in the first season of this new regime. The same fortune could come to the Jets if they are able to get both executive positions right. It's what makes the hiring of experienced consultants so important. Gone appear to be the days when Johnson and his family would turn to Twitter to figure out a way to solve their vacancies. Instead, the "football guys" are back in charge in Florham Park. And it could change life forever for the Jets. Related: Jets Problem is Aaron's Power
Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy has hailed the bold economic reforms of Dr Manmohan Singh as a legacy which continues to shape modern India. In a social media tribute to the former prime minister who was cremated in New Delhi on Saturday, Lammy also credited Singh for laying the foundations of the “thriving” bilateral partnership between India and the UK. “Dr Manmohan Singh’s bold economic reforms transformed India’s economy,” Lammy said in a post on X on Friday evening. “His legacy continues to shape modern India, and his vision laid the foundations for today’s thriving UK-India partnership. My deepest condolences to his family and the Indian people,” he said. Manmohan Singh, who was prime minister between 2004 and 2014 and finance minister before that, has been widely hailed the world over as the architect of India's economic liberalisation. He died aged 92 and was laid to rest with full state honours in a ceremony attended by leading political dignitaries and included a 21-gun salute. Following his death on Thursday night, the government declared seven days of national mourning. Earlier, British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron took to social media to pay tribute to “a great Prime Minister, Finance Minister and global statesman who advanced India’s interests through bold economic reforms and played a key role in putting India in its rightful place on the world stage and stabilising the global economy after the financial crisis”. “The UK will always be proud of his invaluable partnership with three UK Prime Ministers, and proud of him as an alumnus of two of our great universities. My thoughts and wishes are with his family and the people of India,” she said. Singh’s tenure overlapped with Labour prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and Conservative David Cameron, who later wrote in his memoir that he “got on well” with this “saintly man” who was robust on the threats India faced. “On a later visit he told me that another terrorist attack like that in Mumbai in July 2011, and India would have to take military action against Pakistan,” notes the former UK PM in ‘For the Record’, published in 2019. The Guardian’ newspaper referenced Singh’s “trademark sky-blue turbans and home-spun white kurta pyjamas” in its obituary. “Singh, called India’s ‘reluctant prime minister’ due to his shyness and preference for being behind the scenes, was considered an unlikely choice to lead the world’s biggest democracy. But when Congress leader Sonia Gandhi led her party to a surprise victory in 2004, she turned to Singh to be prime minister,” the newspaper notes. The BBC, in its obituary, hailed Singh as one of India's longest-serving prime ministers who was considered the “architect of key liberalising economic reforms, as premier from 2004-2014 and before that as finance minister”. A study of hot spots for collisions between ships and whales around the world, including Canadian waters, offers a map for measures to prevent the deadly strikes that could drive some species to extinction, one of the British Columbia-based authors says. Chloe Robinson said reported strikes represent a fraction of their true extent, and a lack of protection measures leaves whales vulnerable as global shipping expands. The study found shipping takes place across 92 per cent of the ranges for humpback, blue, fin and sperm whales worldwide, but measures to reduce vessel strikes have been implemented in less than seven per cent of high-risk areas. "That could really spell, you know, potential extinction for some of these species," said Robinson, director of whales for Ocean Wise, a B.C.-based organization that provided data for the paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Science. "A recent study estimated anything up to 20,000 whales are killed a year through ship strikes, globally, and that's just an estimate, a best-case estimate." Robinson said she was surprised to see Swiftsure Bank, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, emerge as a risk hot spot for strikes of fin, blue and humpback whales. The area is a "migration highway" for humpbacks, she noted. The study also identified a hot spot for the same three species in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. "This is something that Ocean Wise has been looking into because a lot of the management measures occur offshore and not sort of within the Gulf of St. Lawrence itself and even the St. Lawrence Seaway, (which) leads down to the Great Lakes," she said. "That was a huge hot spot, which was really interesting for me." Robinson said there have been smaller studies on the risk of ship strikes in different regions, but the study published Thursday is the first to map the distribution of the four whale species, using a variety of data sources, then compare it with the Automatic Identification System, a tool used for tracking vessels worldwide. "This was really the first of its kind to map these two on top of each other," she said. The researchers found the highest levels of risk in the Indian, western North Pacific and Mediterranean, while it also identified high-risk areas in the eastern North Pacific, North and South Atlantic Ocean along with the South China Sea. The Southern Ocean was the only region that did not contain any ship-strike hot spots due to low levels of shipping, despite high use by whales, the study found. Robinson said the findings support a strong case for maritime authorities to adopt measures such as whale alert systems, speed limits and no-go zones. "We know where there are areas where there are lots of whales and lots of ships, so this is where we need to target for management," she said in an interview. Robinson said Canada is home to many "eyes on the water" and researchers exploring innovative techniques for monitoring whales. But the country lacks mandatory mitigation measures, and it's not alone. "Next to none of the measures globally are mandatory. So, having voluntary measures (is) great, provided people comply," Robinson said. Ocean Wise launched an alert system in 2018 that notifies large vessels of the presence of whales in Pacific Northwest waters, and Robinson said about 80 per cent of mariners from Washington state up to Alaska have signed up. The WhaleReport alert system mainly functions in what she describes as "inshore" waters around busy ports in Seattle, Vancouver and Prince Rupert. The Port of Vancouver has also seen a high rate of compliance for its ECHO program, Robinson noted. The program encourages vessels to take voluntary steps, such as slowing down or staying farther away from whales, in order to reduce underwater noise and the potential for strikes in busy shipping areas. Robinson favours a multi-pronged approach to reducing ship strikes, but she said one single measure she believes could have a big impact would be equipping vessels with an infrared camera to detect whales within several kilometres. "Maybe some mariners ... respond better to knowing there 100 per cent is a whale 200 metres in front of your vessel, versus, 'slow down, there might be a whale here.'" Robinson said such cameras can cost between US$50,000 and $75,000. But the cost was a "drop in the bucket" of major companies' profits, she said. The cameras also present a public-relations opportunity for businesses to advertise themselves as operating in a more whale-friendly manner, Robinson said. "I know people who have had to go and have therapy after killing a humpback whilst at the helm," she added. "I think there's a lot to be said (for) the long-term benefits of this kind of technology." The study also found areas with lower traffic that could provide refuge for whales, especially with added protections. It shows the Arctic Ocean, for example, has very few high-risk areas for vessel strikes, and Robinson said some researchers view it as potential sanctuary. But without protections, Robinson said Arctic waters could become the next high-risk hot spot as sea ice melts with climate change, opening up shipping routes. "Knowing the plans to expand shipping routes into these areas to cut shipping time, make things faster, right through prime whale habitat, I think this is a really good opportunity to get ahead of the issue before it becomes an issue," she said. Whales play crucial roles in their ecosystems, including cycling nutrients that support other species, and they're a boon for tourism, Robinson said. They're also "magical" creatures that people feel connected to, she said, and they remain vulnerable after many species were hunted to the brink of extinction. Newcastle United missed the chance to move within just two points of second place following a 2-0 defeat against West Ham. Tomas Soucek's header put West Ham in front early on before Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubled the visitors' lead with an effort from just inside the box in the 53rd minute. Here are five things we learned from the game. 'How s--- must you be? We're winning away!' West Ham fans were not used to this. The Hammers had only previously won once on the road all season yet it was the away end making all the noise with further taunts of 'No noise from the Saudi boys!' and 'Where's your famous atmosphere?' as Newcastle grew frustrated following Tomas Soucek's opener. Even Eddie Howe could not hide his feelings, urging his players to 'COME ON!', when they did not take a throw-in quickly. West Ham, in contrast, were happy to slow things down. Lukasz Fabianski took his time with goal kicks. Michail Antonio even took his time coming off the field to get a new shirt after his top ripped in the first half before Newcastle had a flurry of chances right before the break. Lewis Hall fizzed an effort just wide in the 35th minute following a lung-busting run; Fabianski produced a huge save to deny Anthony Gordon just a minute later after a mix-up at the back; and Alexander Isak fired wide from inside the box after chesting down Bruno Guimaraes' superb lofted ball. Newcastle lacked a clinical edge and the Magpies picked up from where they left off after the break with Gordon failing to hit the target from inside the box. Just a couple minutes later, West Ham doubled their advantage. In truth, West Ham looked the likelier scorers - even at 2-0. It was rather telling that Fabian Schar resorted to unleashing a long-range effort before the hour mark that sailed over the bar. Remarkably, Newcastle mustered just two shots on target from 18 efforts. You would not have known that only league leaders Liverpool had conceded fewer goals than Newcastle in the Premier League. Not on this evidence. West Ham may have landed two sucker punches, but Newcastle, who missed the suspended Dan Burn, only had themselves to blame. Let's start with Tomas Soucek's opener. Newcastle have been solid defensively from set-plays, but the Magpies were far from watertight when Emerson Palmieri took West Ham's first corner and swung the ball into the box. Soucek, West Ham's main threat from set-pieces, stepped away from Lloyd Kelly far too easily and headed home unmarked. It was the first goal Newcastle had conceded from 70 corners this season. If that was a sloppy goal to concede, well, Newcastle's defending for West Ham's second was not much better. Bruno Guimaraes was far too casual in the middle of the park and Lucas Paqueta dispossessed his countryman before playing the ball out to Jarrod Bowen on the right. Bowen drew Lewis Hall and Sean Longstaff to him before slipping the unmarked Aaron Wan-Bissaka in. No one got tight enough to the West Ham defender, who had all the time he needed to look up and pick his spot to double the visitors' lead. Newcastle were 3-1 down with a quarter of an hour to go and still managed to win in the corresponding fixture last season, but history was not about to repeat itself. Even if Newcastle had some genuine game-changers on the bench. Harvey Barnes, who scored twice in that bonkers 4-3 win back in March, replaced Joe Willock at half-time with his side 1-0 down. Sandro Tonali then came on for Sean Longstaff when Newcastle were 2-0 behind. Eddie Howe made a double change in the 68th minute, throwing on Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson for Joelinton and Anthony Gordon, and switching to a 4-4-2 and it very nearly paid dividends. Wilson has caused West Ham nightmares over the years and, in his first appearance since May, the striker had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Craig Pawson after Konstantinos Mavropanos had his hands all over him in the box. VAR did not intervene after the officials 'deemed that the contact was not sufficient for a penalty'. There was to be no grandstand finish on a night Newcastle grew increasingly ragged. Defeating Arsenal, Chelsea and high-flying Nottingham Forest is one thing; how would Newcastle cope as overwhelming favourites against West Ham in the Magpies' first game after the international break? In some ways, this was every bit a test of Newcastle's credentials as a genuine European contender after Eddie Howe's team previously lost at Fulham; drew against Bournemouth and Everton; and required two late goals to turn the game on its head late on versus Wolves. Newcastle, following wins against Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Chelsea, had looked more like their old selves before the international break as the Magpies looked to become 'that team nobody wants to play' in the words of Jacob Murphy. Dan Burn, recalling the season Newcastle qualified for the Champions League, when the black-and-whites 'had no fear and just wanted to dominate teams', felt like that mentality was returning. A bullish Sean Longstaff said Newcastle had a group of games 'we think we can target for maximum points' - and rightly so. This felt like a chance to make a fresh statement against a vulnerable West Ham side and move within just two points of champions Manchester City in second place. Instead it ended in frustration. 'Alexander the Great', the banner in the Gallowgate End read. Opposite, in the Leazes End, a sea of blue and yellow flags spelt out 'Isak' in Sweden colours. It was a fitting tribute from Wor Flags to a player Eddie Howe has suggested can prove himself as 'one of the world's best. Isak had the ball in the back of the net after just five minutes, expertly chipping Lukasz Fabianski, but it was ruled out for offside. Few would have predicted that Newcastle would fail to score in the following 85 minutes. Just like against Brighton, which was Newcastle's first game after last month's international break, the Magpies paid the price for their wastefulness at home and visiting teams will start to take encouragement from this. Canadian striker Jonathan David scored twice to go past the 100-goal career mark for Lille in a 3-1 win over Brest in Ligue 1 play Friday. The 24-year-old from Ottawa turned in a man-of-the-match performance at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, assisting on his team's other goal as Lille extended its unbeaten run to 10 matches. David now has 17 in 23 games in all competitions this season and leads the French top tier with 11 goals. David, who joined Lille in August 2020 in a $46.5-million transfer from Belgium's KAA Gent, went into the game with 99 goals in all competitions. He finished it with 101 goals in 206 appearances for Lille. "So happy for Jonathan. What an accomplishment," Canada coach Jesse Marsch said in a social media post. David put Lille ahead from the penalty spot after nine minutes and set up a second just before halftime when he got away from his marker and sent in a cross that Iceland international winger Hákon Haraladsson knocked home . Ludovic Ajorque got one back for Brest early in the second half but David restored Lille’s two-goal cushion when he pounced on a loose ball and scored. David, who tops Canada's men's scoring list with 31 goals from 59 appearances, is out of contract after this season and has been linked with a move to several top European clubs. Lille has not lost to Brest at home since 1989. Lille joined Marseille and Monaco in second place on 26 points, seven behind leader Paris Saint-Germain, which played Auxerre later on Friday.Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000. Baldoni’s relationship with Melissa Nathan, a publicist who specializes in crisis management, has come under scrutiny after Lively filed a legal complaint accusing Baldoni and associates of engaging in a “retaliatory social manipulation campaign” against his “It Ends With Us” castmate. Nathan and her public relations firm, The Agency Group PR, are known for specializing in messy situations, including crisis and reputation management. Nathan worked with Johnny Depp during his 2022 defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. Before, during and after the trial, Heard faced a deluge of online harassment from Depp fans, who banded together under the hashtag #JusticeForJohnnyDepp. In the end, the jury determined that Heard had defamed Depp and awarded him $15 million in damages. According to The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter, The Agency Group PR has also represented a number of celebrities who have been at the center of legal battles and public controversies. On its website, the agency boasts that its work “redefines the rules of reputation management,” with “years of success behind some of the most noteworthy, high-profile crisis and litigation events in recent history.” The company’s roster of clients is said to include rappers Drake and Travis Scott, in addition to YouTuber-turned-pro fighter Logan Paul. This year, rival rapper Kendrick Lamar accused Drake of having sex with minors in a series of diss tracks. In a November legal complaint, Drake accused recording giant Universal Music Group of helping Lamar defame the “Certified Lover Boy” rapper by releasing the allegedly libelous tracks. Scott and concert colossus Live Nation are still stuck in civil litigation over the 2021 AstroWorld Festival tragedy in Houston, where a crowd crush resulted in 10 concertgoers’ deaths and hundreds of injuries. Paul is facing a number of legal issues. His beverage company, Prime Hydration, is the target of multiple lawsuits, including allegations of trademark infringement and a multimillion-dollar breach-of-contract dispute. Nathan even has a Donald Trump connection, previously fielding press inquiries for the president-elect’s youngest daughter, Tiffany Trump, during his first run for office, in the 2016 presidential race, according to Politico. Representatives of Nathan and The Agency Group PR did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request Monday for comment regarding their client list. Baldoni seemed to be seeking out someone with a knack for reputation rehabilitation when he hired Nathan and her agency in August. At the time, he was contending with an array of negative rumors about his behavior during the making of “It Ends With Us.” After hiring Nathan, a PR proxy battle between Baldoni and Lively appeared to ensue. Lively began to face a slew of negative press, with many of the reports drawing from years-old press appearances that had painted the actor as rude and out of touch. Others criticized the star for having an overly cheery approach to promoting a film whose subject is domestic abuse. Other news outlets have retreated behind paywalls. Lively’s suit against Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, alleges that the negative media attention was the result of a coordinated smear campaign which was orchestrated by Nathan. As evidence, the filing includes text messages alleged to be between Baldoni, Nathan and his personal publicist, Jennifer Abel. In one of the alleged exchanges included in the filing, a sender said to be Nathan tells her client, “You know we can bury anyone.” Related From Our Partner
A study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has explored optimal albedo and tilt angles for bifacial perovskite solar cells. They have discovered that a rear-side albedo of 0.5 combined with a 20-degree tilt angle delivers maximum efficiency. Lambertian reflection and albedo key to boosting performance Bifacial perovskite solar cells (Bi-PSCs) have gained significant attention in the photovoltaic (PV) community for their potential to boost power generation, suitability for integration into building structures, and application in multijunction PV systems. The new study explores the fabrication of efficient bifacial perovskite solar cells and examines their unique properties through various characterization techniques, including Lambertian reflection effects from tilt angle adjustments and bottom albedo illumination, according to lead author Paul Ananta. The scientists identified the transparent back contact, made of indium zinc oxide (IZO), as the core component of their bifacial solar cells. They highlighted its excellent conductivity, high mobility, and optimal transparency. The device features an active area of 0.175 cm2 when illuminated from the front and 0.14 cm2 from the rear. The cell features a transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate, an electron transport layer (ETL) made of tin oxide (SnO2), a perovskite absorber, a hole transport layer (HTL) composed of spiro-OMeTAD and molybdenum oxide (MoOx), and an indium zinc oxide (IZO) layer. The control device achieved a maximum power conversion efficiency of 17.46% under front-side 1 Sun AM1.5G illumination. A significant impact of ground Lambertian reflection was observed with tilt angle variations, increasing efficiency from 17.46% to 18.82% as the tilt angle reached 20 degrees. The researchers also found that increasing the rear-side albedo to 0.5 Sun resulted in a maximum efficiency of 26% and a bifaciality factor of 89.3% at a 20-degree tilt angle. SCAPS-1D simulations confirm experimental results The synergistic effect of 0.5 Sun albedo and a 20-degree tilt angle resulted in bifacial perovskite solar cells with an efficiency of 26.46%. SCAPS-1D simulations were also used to validate the experimental Lambertian reflection effects. The researchers also found that the cells demonstrated intrinsic self-encapsulation and chemical durability. Moreover, the study predicts that cost-effective and highly efficient bifacial perovskite solar cells will become a leading photovoltaic technology for electricity generation in both single-junction and tandem configurations in the near future. Perovskite solar cells, developed by Tsutomu Miyasaka in 2009, marked a breakthrough in photovoltaics and offer a promising alternative to traditional solar technologies. Now, leading research labs worldwide are exploring these next-gen cells, which can absorb a wider spectrum of sunlight. Furthermore, innovations like perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells enhance the technology by merging the strengths of perovskite and crystalline silicon, enabling the capture of a broader spectrum of sunlight and boosting overall efficiency.
