PASAY CITY, Philippines , Dec. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The SM Group is approaching the coming year with cautious optimism, encouraged by the continued growth of the Philippine economy. SM Investments President and Chief Executive Officer Frederic C. DyBuncio said that despite ongoing challenges of peso volatility and higher inflation, the business sector has adapted well. Consistent demand sustained household spending in the third quarter, with Household Final Consumption Expenditure posting a year-on-year growth of 5.1%, maintaining the same level in the same quarter last year, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed. "Any moderation in inflation should trigger a strong confidence rebound. This could create opportunities in consumer-focused sectors in the country and we are poised to cater to these evolving demands," Mr. DyBuncio said. To cater to growing demand, SM continues to expand into more underserved areas, contributing to sustainable economic development and collaborating with government stakeholders to enhance access to modern retail, financial services, and integrated property developments. "By investing and expanding to more areas nationwide, SM creates new markets and improves access to these essential sectors, serving more communities and helping stimulate sustained economic activities," he said. Mr. DyBuncio also said SM continues to invest in promising ventures such as renewable energy and logistics, that foster economic activity. SM has invested in the clean energy industry through Philippine Geothermal Production Company (PGPC) which produces 300 Megawatts of geothermal steam supply. SM aims to continue to develop geothermal concessions through PGPC in support of the Department of Energy's goal of reaching 50% renewable energy supply by 2040. To encourage circularity towards green energy production, SM's property arm, SM Prime Holdings partnered with GUUN Co. Ltd. ( GUUN ) to implement the Japanese technique of reducing landfill impact. The technology converts non-recyclable and hard-to-recycle packaging into alternative fuel. SM's banking arm, BDO Unibank is one of the largest funders of renewable energy projects. BDO has funded PHP898 billion in sustainable finance, including loans to 59 renewable energy projects as of December 2023. In logistics and tourism, the improvement of transport networks across the country's archipelago connects tourist and industrial areas that will help create inclusive growth. SM though its subsidiary 2GO launched MV Masigla and MV Masikap in 2024 to help better connect goods to 19 ports across the country including Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Manila , further supporting the government's push for medium term growth through an upgraded tourism infrastructure and ecosystem. "Our focus for 2025 will be to drive purposeful growth, empowering communities and partners through our investments towards a sustainable future," Mr. DyBuncio said. Wednesday's doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The Baltimore Ravens' 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million while Kansas City's 29-10 win at Pittsburgh averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. The NBA's five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” While the NBA's Christmas lineup has its best viewer numbers in five years, the NFL has made Christmas one of its tentpole events during the regular season, joining Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving. “The numbers speak for themselves and LeBron can have his own view, and I’m sure more people will look at that because of this," said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media. "But, you know, we’re focused on the NFL and we’re thrilled with the results this year with the Christmas on Netflix and we’re excited to continue to build that over the next couple of years.” Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock. Viewership for Ravens-Texans peaked with the Beyoncé Bowl. The 20-minute halftime performance averaged over 27 million viewers. The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston. Global ratings and final U.S. numbers are expected to be available on Tuesday. The NFL's Christmas numbers decreased from last season, but not at the rate that usually happens when something goes from broadcast to streaming. Last year’s three games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, averaging 29.48 million on CBS. Once global and Netflix's first-party data is released, both Christmas games should surpass 30 million. The NBA's lineup saw an 84% rise over 2023. One reason for the increase is that all five games were on ABC, compared to two last year. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75. KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has directed the special police team probing the death of former Kannur ADM Naveen Babu to produce the case diary and submit a progress report of the investigation. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas issued the order after considering the plea filed by Naveen Babu's wife Manjusha seeking a CBI probe into Naveen's death. The court also sent a notice to the CBI. The court dismissed Manjusha's request to stay the submission of the final report by the police team. The court stated that the investigation should continue and that the court has the authority to intervene even if the charge sheet is submitted. The court will consider the petition again on December 6. It will hear the detailed arguments after examining the case diary. Pathanamthitta native Naveen Babu, who was the Kannur ADM, was found hanging inside his quarters in Kannur on October 15. In her petition, Manjusha raised the suspicion that her husband may have been murdered. Accused has high political influence, CBI should investigate the case: Manjusha High Court: Isn't this a suicide case? Manjusha: I suspect that my husband was murdered. There are facts to support it. High Court: Why are you demanding a CBI probe? Manjusha: I'm demanding a CBI probe as PP Divya, the accused, has high political influence. She is a district committee member of the CPM and state joint secretary of the Janadhipathya Mahila Association. She is a senate member of the Kannur University. She also holds various other posts. Hence, I am not expecting an impartial investigation from the police. High Court: Didn't the police assign a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case? Manjusha: The special team is just a name. Most of its members are from the local police. The investigating officer is an inspector who ranks below the accused in the protocol. The investigating officers are fabricating evidence to protect the accused. They did not take any action even after the name and signature of Prashanthan, the witness, changed.

Fetching latest articlesArticle content The Alberta government plans to increase the auto insurance premium cap on good drivers from the current 3.7 per cent to 7.5 per cent in the new year and plans to create a new privately delivered auto insurance system that aims to limit legal action in certain instances. The reforms are said to help with affordability by providing services faster to Albertans while still penalizing bad drivers. Once fully implemented, the province estimates drivers will save up to $400 per year. Premier Danielle Smith said the process for compensation is “long and unwieldy” for Albertans who are in collisions and said the reforms will move Alberta away from a “court-focused system” to a “care-first model.” “The proof will be when the model comes forward, people will either get the rebate cheque in January or they won’t. But I can tell you, we’ve told the insurers this is kind of the end of the line,” Smith said. The province said the increase to the premium cap is due to high legal costs, increasing vehicle damage repair costs, and natural disaster costs. The 7.5 per cent increase will include 2.5 per cent for catastrophic losses such as the Jasper wildfire and the Calgary hail storm. That increase will be re-evaluated for 2026. In 2023, the average auto insurance premium in Alberta was $1,670 — the second highest in Canada behind Ontario which saw an average of $1,800. Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said the new auto insurance system will be “worse” than what is currently in place right now. “This government talks a game on affordability, while Alberta becomes harder and harder and harder to live in and more and more unaffordable,” Nenshi said. He said Alberta has the highest insurance premiums in Canada, in some cases, double, triple, quadruple, what motorists are paying in British Columbia or Saskatchewan. New auto insurance system will be a “care-first model” In January 2027, the province plans to fully implement its new privately operated auto insurance system which will be a “care-first model.” Officials said the new system is not a no-fault system but rather a no-sue system where bad drivers will be held accountable through higher premiums. The new system would remove the need to sue and, in most circumstances, motorists will not be able to sue at-fault drivers. Under the new system, all injured parties who were involved in auto accidents, including those at fault, cyclists and pedestrians will have access to the necessary medical and rehabilitation benefits they need. The new model will also feature improvements to income replacement benefits up to a gross income threshold of $120,000 payable up to the age of 65. In the current system, Alberta offers disability support benefits of $600 per week which is payable for a maximum of two years after a collision. A one-time permanent impairment benefit will also be available for those who are injured either catastrophically or non-catastrophically. The amount ranges depending on the severity. Litigation available in some cases Court access will still be available in limited circumstances. People injured in collisions will be able to sue at-fault drivers for pain and suffering damages where the at-fault driver is convicted of Criminal Code offences and select major offences under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act. The changes mirror Saskatchewan’s insurance model which has similar clauses. Those who have to pay out of pocket beyond what the listed maximums are will also be able to sue the at-fault driver for those expenses. However, the province said since the benefits under the policy are substantial, they anticipate the volume of those claims will be low. Finance Minister Nate Horner said the reforms were not meant to take away the right to sue but reduce the need to sue. “When we started looking at reforming Alberta’s auto insurance system, all our stakeholders agreed to the guiding principles of accountability, affordability, care-focused simplicity and stability,” Horner said. The province plans to establish an independent dispute resolution body to allow those who were injured in a collision to appeal the decisions of insurers.A Northern Ireland woman has bravely shared her story of going from homeless to hopeful ahead of Homelessness Awareness Week. Arianna lost her mum in early childhood due to illness and went to live with her aunt who lived across the street , aged 12. Her dad moved away to Scotland for work three days after his mum, Arianna’s granny died. Her aunt sadly died when Arianna was turning 21. READ MORE: The mobile health clinic bringing vital services to NI homeless community READ MORE: Urgent appeal as over 5,000 children facing homelessness in NI this Christmas At this stage she went back to live with her dad who had up to this point provided for her financially but had never been her primary caregiver. Arianna struggled with her mental health at various stages of her childhood but it wasn’t until she was 21 that she disclosed to her GP how difficult she was finding things at home, largely due to her dad’s alcoholism which she had kept secret. The GP referred her to a social worker who referred Arianna to MACS, Northern Ireland’s youth homelessness charity. Unable to continue living at home, Arianna spent some time sofa surfing, staying at her sister’s and some friend’s houses. MACS met her where she was and started supporting her via their floating support service. Arianna describes this as a turning point, saying of her MACS support worker Gary: "I didn’t realise help like this existed. He helped me with all the aspects of my life that I needed help with; a lot of people don’t have parents who are able to do stuff for them but MACS helped me every little thing that I needed." Arianna had previously been in a bad car accident which had left her traumatised so Gary drove her to health appointments, to legal and welfare appointments and helped her back into driving lessons to overcome her fear of driving. MACS connected Arianna with the Housing Executive and helped her learn about the welfare system and which benefits she was entitled to while she got herself on her feet. She now has the keys to her own flat and is excited about embarking on a career helping other young people. Arianna describes how MACS helped and encouraged her to enrol on a short course at Ulster University in Early Adversity and Developmental Trauma. She got the bug for learning and has since completed further educational courses in related topics. She explained: "The courses helped me understand some of my own feelings and behaviours and how they’d been shaped by my early experiences. I hope one day I’ll be able to use this insight and knowledge to help others the way MACS has helped me. "If it hadn’t been for MACS’s help I hate to think where I’d be now, possibly homeless or on the street. Instead, I feel hopeful about my future." Arianna hopes to enrol on a psychology degree or a counselling course next year. MACS Supporting Children and Young People (MACS) is the only youth-specific homelessness charity in Northern Ireland. MACS are challenging people to give up their bed for one night to raise funds towards the crucial housing and support services MACS provide to young people aged 16-25 who are at risk of, or experiencing homelessness in NI. MACS will host the Sleep Out challenge at Banana Block in Belfast on December 5 to coincide with Homelessness Awareness Week facilitated by Homeless Connect, which aims to raise awareness of the reality of homelessness in NI. Sleep Out is a fun-filled evening with stand-up comedy by Paddy Raff, a drum circle with The Gathering Drum and warm drinks and food courtesy of Bodega Bagels until 11pm when the challenge of sleeping out really begins. Kate Martin, MACS’s CEO, said: “It would be impossible to recreate the fear, loneliness and discomfort of not having a safe place to call home but Sleep Out gives participants a glimpse into the reality some young people are facing. “MACS was established over 30 years ago, the name is an acronym for Mulholland After Care Services as at that time we solely supported young people leaving care. “Over time we’ve widened our support to help all young people who are at risk of homelessness. Unfortunately that demand is higher than ever. MACS support almost 700 young people aged 16-25 every year.“ She added: “Early intervention is so important in breaking the homelessness cycle before it spirals into longer term homelessness and the associated risks. When young people get the right support at the right time they really can and do progress away from homelessness and build brighter futures. “At MACS we concentrate on intensive longer term services; typically each young person receives up to two years of services. Our support is holistic, wrap-around care tailored to each individual's needs over a period of time that allows them time to develop the capacity, confidence and resilience to move on. “The reasons young people find themselves homeless can be complex, it may be due to loss or illness of a family member, adverse childhood experiences, relationship breakdown or other circumstances which are outside of a child or young person’s control. “MACS aims to give these young people security whilst empowering them to find a place to call home and build brighter futures. Every young person deserves a safe place to live and the unwavering support and guidance as they navigate early adulthood.” To register or donate visit www.macsni.org . NEW YORK (AP) — Sneaking a little ahead of line to get on that plane faster? American Airlines might stop you . In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won't accept a boarding pass before the group it's assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. The initial response from customers and American employees "has exceeded our expectations," Julie Rath, American’s senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said in a statement. She added that the airline is “thrilled" to have the technology up and running ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday . American got lots of attention when it unveiled its gate-control testing last month. Analysts say that isn't surprising. It's no secret that line cutting in airports hits a nerve. Whether intentional or not, just about every air traveler has witnessed it, noted Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. It can add to frustrations in what can already be a tense environment, with particular anxiety around passengers wanting to sit together or rushing for some overhead bin space. Harteveldt doesn't see American's recent move as “shaming” customers who cut the line. “What it is intended to do is bring order out of chaos,” he said. "And I hope it will defuse any potential flare ups of anger (from) people who simply think they're entitled to board out of turn .... It’s just not fair." Harteveldt added that he thinks this change will enhance the experiences of both customers and gate agents. Others say more time will tell. Seth Miller, editor and founder of air travel experience analysis site PaxEx.aero , said he can see the benefits of more orderly and universal gate-control enforcement, particularly for airlines. But he said he isn't “100% convinced this is perfect for passengers" just yet. Families, for example, might be booked on several different reservations across more than one group, he said. Airlines typically have workarounds for that, and American noted Wednesday that customers traveling with a companion in an earlier group can simply have a gate agent “override the alert” to continue boarding. Still, Miller said, “you have to go through the extra hoops.” And a difficult customer still might choose to hold up the line and argue when they're not allowed to board, he added. Another question is whether customers who encounter a beep will walk away feeling embarrassed. But Harteveldt said he was happy to learn that American's alert is “not a bellowing sound that can be heard throughout the terminal,” or accompanied by your name read over a loudspeaker, noting that this is important to avoid feelings of shame. Expanding this technology just a week before peak Thanksgiving travel could be “both good and bad,” Harteveldt adds. On one hand, the tech could help significantly improve the boarding process during such a busy time, he said, but airport employees might also have appreciated more time to prepare. Both Miller and Harteveldt said they wouldn't be surprised if other carriers soon follow American's lead. Headaches over airport line cutting are far from new. While maybe not to the extent of American's new tech, Miller noted he's seen gate agents from other airlines ask people to leave a line and wait for their group. Harteveldt added that he's been to some airports in Asia and Europe with “sliding doors” that ensure passengers are in the right group before boarding a plane. The more than 100 airports that American is now using its gate-control technology in are all spoke, or non-hub, locations — including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline says it expects to further expand to its hubs and other airports in the coming months.President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Christmas Day to suggest that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky should run for Prime Minister of Canada — or, as Trump put it, " Governor of Canada." "I just left Wayne Gretzky, 'The Great One' as he is known in Ice Hockey circles," Trump wrote . "I said, 'Wayne, why don't you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada - You would win easily, you wouldn't even have to campaign.'" "He had no interest," Trump continued. "But I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!" The prodding follows recent statements from Trump suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. Earlier in December, after dining with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump jokingly referred to Trudeau as the "Governor of the Great State of Canada." During the Mar-a-Lago dinner, Trump reportedly said that Canada should join the U.S. as a state, claiming many Canadians would save on taxes and benefit from military protection. The president-elect also criticized Canada's trade policies and questioned why the U.S. provides subsidies to its northern neighbor. While Gretzky has expressed no interest in politics, Trump's comments have sparked a flurry of online debate about his repeated "51st state" suggestions. Meanwhile, Trudeau has yet to publicly respond to Trump's remarks.Kylian Mbappe misses penalty and Real Madrid loses ground in Champions League
