Intel has taken enormous pains to prevent a repeat of the driver woes that plagued its first-generation “Alchemist” GPUs inside its second-generation “Battlemage” cards, Intel fellow Tom Petersen told The Full Nerd podcast on Tuesday morning. “It’s a complex problem, but we have invested gi-namic resources into addressing it,” Petersen, also known as “TAP,” , hosted by PCWorld regulars, as “It’s like enormous, and gigantic.” The story Intel’s first A770 and A750 cards were expected to tell was one of a literal third-party competitor whose presence would force down the prices of graphics cards at a time where AMD and especially Nvidia were pushing them higher and higher. But the launch of Arc arrived a year later than expected, and the A770 and A750 followed the debut of the A380 in China that was accompanied by . was also affected by several software issues, even if some weren’t necessarily deal breakers. Still, when PCWorld ends up writing a story titled “ ” several months later, you know there were substantive problems. Our followup article showed how the driver experience improved, however, and Petersen said that Intel’s ongoing driver stack continues that trend. “Think of it as we’ve done more than 50 driver releases since we launched Alchemist,” Petersen said Tuesday. “That’s 50. And those driver releases have all gone through massive [quality assurance] cycles.” “We’ve increased our game coverage by 2.5X — so, you know, hundreds and hundreds of games are run every week looking for validation regressions,” Petersen added. “So it’s only through testing and architecture and hard work that we can get our driver quality where it needs to be. But I feel very comfortable that we are over that hump.” Petersen said that he expects “hundreds of thousands” of people to buy the Battlemage cards. “This is really going to be either earth-shattering for me as we get out, and there’s like hundreds of millions, or hundreds of thousands of people that buy this card, and I’m going to be delighted when they say this is rock solid, or it’s just going to shatter me... I don’t expect the second one, it’s a nice thing.” Not the striongest endorsement, maybe. But with , it has nowhere to go but up. By Clarissa-Jan Lim Former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s reputation and political prospects may take a nosedive in the wake of the release of the House Ethics Committee’s report , but several MAGA figures are standing by the Florida Republican. On his “War Room” podcast hours after the report’s release Monday, Steve Bannon, a former Trump White House aide, dismissed the report as a “nothing burger” and urged Gaetz to return to Congress. “Take the ethics report and shove it up your a--. That’s what I think,” Bannon said. “Gaetz must return like Trump returned. Don’t back down, double down.” The committee said in its report that it found “substantial evidence” that Gaetz had violated House rules, as well as state and federal laws, while serving in Congress, including that he “regularly” paid women for sex and bought or possessed illegal drugs including cocaine and ecstasy. Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and noted that a separate Justice Department investigation into allegations of sex trafficking ended with no charges. Gaetz has said he will not join the next Congress in January despite winning re-election in November, and he is due to begin hosting a political talk show on One America News Network. At a Turning Point USA convention over the weekend, he floated running for Florida governor or for Sen. Marco Rubio’s seat in the U.S. Senate. Although much of MAGA world raged against the committee’s findings and its decision to release a report on a former member, others have downplayed the committee’s findings and its potential impact on Gaetz’s political future. Florida state Rep. Juan Porras praised Gaetz on X as “one of the most prominent fighters” in the GOP and derided the ethics committee’s findings as “opposition research disguised as an ethics report.” “I stand with him and hope to see him continue his public service in the future,” he wrote. Florida state Sen. Joe Gruters, whom President-elect Donald Trump has backed for treasurer of the Republican National Committee , told Politico that the report’s release was an “attempt to damage [Gaetz’s] reputation by those with personal or political grievances against him.” Gaetz, he said, “continues to have a bright future in elected office, or any other path he chooses to pursue.” Clarissa-Jan Lim is a breaking/trending news blogger for MSNBC Digital. She was previously a senior reporter and editor at BuzzFeed News.NEW YORK (AP) — The man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train used a shirt to fan the flames, a prosecutor said Tuesday at his arraignment on murder charges. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally, was not required to enter a plea and did not speak at the hearing in Brooklyn criminal court. Zapeta, wearing a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt, will remain jailed and is due back in court on Friday. His lawyer did not ask for bail. Zapeta is charged with two counts of murder, accusing him of intentionally killing the woman and killing her while committing arson. He is also charged with one count of arson. The top charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attack a “gruesome and senseless act of violence” and said it would be “met with the most serious consequences.” The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on an F train that was stopped at the Coney Island station. Police said Tuesday the victim's identification is still pending. Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who may have been sleeping in the train, and set her clothing on fire with a lighter. Zapeta then fanned the flames with a shirt, engulfing her in fire, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said in court Tuesday. Zapeta then sat on a bench on the subway platform and watched, police said. According to Rottenberg, Zapeta told detectives that he didn’t know what happened but identified himself in images of the attack. Zapeta's lawyer, Ed Friedman, did not speak to reporters after the arraignment. Video on social media appears to show some people looking on from the platform and at least one police officer walking by while the woman is on fire inside the train. NYPD Transit Chief Joseph Gulotta said Sunday that several officers responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene “the way it’s supposed to be" while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. “Officers who were on patrol on an upper level of that station smelled and saw smoke and went to investigate. What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. They eventually put the fire out, but “unfortunately, it was too late,” Tisch said, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Zapeta was taken into custody Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after teenagers recognized him from images circulated by the police. A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta was deported in 2018 but later reentered the U.S. illegally. The crime deepened a growing sense of unease among some New Yorkers about the safety of the subway system, amplified by graphic video of the attack that ricocheted across social media. Overall, crime is down in the transit system compared to last year. Major felonies declined 6% between January and November compared to the same time period last year, according to data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But murders are up, with nine killings this year through November compared to five during the same period last year. Earlier this month, a Manhattan jury acquitted former Marine Daniel Penny in the chokehold death last year of an agitated subway rider. The case became a flashpoint in debates over safety, homelessness and mental illness on the system. Policing the subway is difficult, given the vast network of trains moving between 472 stations. Each stop contains multiple entry points and, in many stations, multiple floors and platforms.

Aden Holloway established career highs of 26 points and eight 3-pointers to help No. 5 Alabama roll to a 105-82 nonconference victory over South Dakota State on Sunday at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Freshman Labaron Philon had the best game of his young career with 21 points and six assists for the Crimson Tide (11-2). Mark Sears had 20 points, including 6-for-14 3-point shooting. Grant Nelson added 17 points and eight rebounds and scored the game's first eight points. Alabama coach Nate Oats has sometimes been critical of his squad's defensive effort and the second half against the Jackrabbits will provide more fuel for that concern. Alabama did connect on a season-best 19 3-point shots but also attempted 55 long-range shots (34.5 percent). The Tide also saw South Dakota State put up 49 points in the second half to keep the score relatively competitive. Alabama claimed a fifth straight win with its third 100-plus point performance of the season. South Dakota State (9-6) was led by Washington State transfer Oscar Cluff, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. The Jackrabbits connected on 11-for-26 3-point shooting (42.3 percent), with guard Isaac Lindsey scoring 11 points, including 3-for-6 on 3-point tries. After Nelson's personal 8-0 run to open the game, South Dakota State pulled with 16-14 on a shot by William Whorton with 11:45 to play in the opening half. But Alabama then broke the game open, going on a 24-3 run culminating in a Holloway 3-pointer to give the Tide a 40-17 edge with 7:37 left in the opening half. South Dakota State trailed 57-33 at halftime, but played a much more competitive second half offensively by connecting on 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent). Alabama will open 2025 with a home game against No. 12 Oklahoma on Saturday. South Dakota State will host Summit Conference opponent Denver on Thursday. --Field Level Media
