Wall Street rallies ahead of ChristmasFollowing their precipitous meeting at the famed Bauhaus school in 1922, artists Josef and Anni Albers, arguably the most enduring couple to emerge from the Bauhaus movement , would chart the rest of their lives as a kind of two-person artistic powerhouse. Despite spending more than half a century together and enjoying flourishing individual careers, though, there were only three occasions on which the Albers’ collaborated artistically: Easter, New Year’s, and Christmas. The Albers had “the utmost respect for one another’s work,” says Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of the non-profit Josef & Anni Albers Foundation , who was a close personal friend of the couple’s, and wrote the 2020 visual biography Anni & Josef Albers: Equal and Unequal . But the couple, who married in 1925, were content to remain solidly in their own spheres. “She was the weaver and he was the painter, and neither was going to get into the other’s realm,” Weber explains. They would, however, stray from that rule for those three select holidays, during which they worked together to make commemorative art. True to their innovative perspectives, the Albers’ holiday cards aren’t merely simple greetings, but rather uniquely design-centric takes on the holiday tradition. They also provide a rare glimpse into how two of the most influential recent designers enjoyed Christmas as a couple. A BAUHAUS APPROACH TO GREETING CARDS The Foundation’s collection of the Albers’ holiday cards begins in 1934, at the start of a new chapter in the couples’ lives. The year prior, the Bauhaus was forced to close by political pressure from the Nazi party—pressure that also spurred the Albers to relocate to the U.S. Both Josef and Anni took up teaching positions in North Carolina at Black Mountain College, a location that inspired several of the Christmas cards to come. | At first glance, the cards don’t exactly look like traditional Christmas notes (aside from the usual refrain, “Happy Christmas and Happy New Year, Josef and Anni Albers”). Rather, each one is its own exploration in graphic design, featuring details like textile-inspired dot patterns, abstracted letterforms, and hand-altered postcards. The pair’s 1934 Christmas card was one of the first that Josef printed at Black Mountain College. Its simple, all-caps red font reflects a distinctly Bauhaus emphasis on simplicity and legibility over ornamentation, while the composition as a whole embraces the design ideal of balanced asymmetry. Weber once told Dezeen of Josef and Anni’s shared design philosophy, “They were both very interested in form following function. Everything was about process and understanding the materials and technology of putting them together.” In later years, particularly between 1950 and 1960, the cards demonstrate a growing fascination with shape and line, using a minimalist black and white palette as a starting point. In 1951, a partially erased grid suggests the outline of a Christmas tree. The following year, a pattern created solely from white dots evokes a kind of festive textile, reminiscent of some of Anni’s groundbreaking work in the weaving space. A christmas tradition A closer inspection of the cards, Weber says, reveals some clues as to how the Albers spent their Christmases. “There were a lot of things they didn’t do, but in their own simple way, they celebrated Christmas,” he says. “I say their own simple way, because they spent it at home together—not socializing—and listening to Bach’s Goldberg Variations . When you look at the holiday cards, you can really practically imagine the clarity of the Goldberg Variations : a lightness, a certain rhythm.” Beyond the main art displayed on each card, the Albers also paid close attention to each missive’s actual construction. The letters were so well-made, Weber says, that many of the Albers’ friends framed them every year. “The holiday cards relate very closely to the Albers’ very beautiful stationery. We’re talking about the days when a lot was done by letter. Anni and Josef had particularly handsome letterheads—you knew that every detail of the spacing was given great consideration. The cards are in the tradition of the letterheads. The holiday itself was important to both of them; they both had a sense of Christmas tradition,” Weber says. Anni, for one, came from a wealthy background, once sharing with Weber her distinct memories of traveling by carriage to her uncles’ homes, where, alongside her brothers and sisters, she would eat delicacies including beluga caviar, rock lobster, and an ice cream cake. Josef, who grew up in a middle-class household, enjoyed these tales of excess. In 1975, Weber personally purchased the ingredients for Anni and Josef to enjoy a Christmas dinner reminiscent of those luxurious early years. That holiday season was ultimately the last that the two shared, as Josef died the following March. “To this day, at Christmastime, I crave the pure tastes of the Alberses’ last Christmas together and must have one such atavistic meal,” Weber wrote in an essay on the topic for Air Mail last year. “And I listen to Glenn Gould playing that phenomenal music of Bach, aware that in Leipzig, Josef had made wonderful stained-glass windows very near to the church where Bach had long been organ master, and that the sublime intelligence of Bach suited the Alberses perfectly.”George Kresge Jr., who wowed talk show audiences as the The Amazing Kreskin, dies
Former defense official says government is hiding UFO secrets from Americans READ MORE: What are the drones over New Jersey? All the key theories so far By JAMES GORDON and LAURA PARNABY FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 19:14, 25 December 2024 | Updated: 19:33, 25 December 2024 e-mail 1 View comments A former defense official has said the government is hiding UFO secrets from Americans, amid the spotlight on apparent drone sightings over the East Coast in recent weeks. Luis Elizondo, the former head of the Defense Department's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, told Congress last month about an alleged government group 'hiding the fact that we are not alone in the cosmos'. 'I believe that we as Americans can handle the truth. And I also believe the world deserves the truth,' Elizondo said. Elizondo was among those claiming that whistleblowers are afraid to come forward, while urging Congress to pass legislation which would protect them. The hearing was part of a larger investigation into UFOs, also known as unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAPs), to determine whether any government officials have been withholding evidence from Congress. It comes as wild footage showed what appeared to be a UFO hovering in the skies over New Jersey before suddenly accelerating away on Sunday. In a short 13 second clip posted to social media, a white light blinked in the sky before suddenly vanishing, leaving onlookers stunned. In the footage, which was shot close near Atlantic City, family members were heard discussing what they witnessed before the object suddenly disappears. 'I just watched it through the telescope.' The footage was sent to Tim Janicki by a friend. The video is the most recent in a long line of mysterious drone sightings that have been reported flying over New Jersey and across the eastern U.S., sparking speculation and concern over where they came from and why. Data shows New Jersey residents have reported more than 1,000 sightings of the flying objects across the state in less than a month after the first report. Some 964 incidents have been logged in total since the first sighting on November 19 up until December 13, according to statistics collected by the state’s Office of Emergency Management and shared with the New York Post . Yet despite the startling volume of apparent sightings - which have prompted locals to shoot into the sky and even sparked the closure of an airport in neighboring New York - officials are yet to provide answers about who or what is behind the drones. As the flashing objects continue to circle the skies above New Jersey and beyond, theories about the source have proliferated in the homes of lawmakers and residents below - from Project Blue Beam to foreign conspiracies. Social media has gone wild with conspiracy theorists insisting the alleged drones are connected with a chilling government plot. Trump-supporting actress Roseanne Barr was among those touting the Project Blue Beam theory , which claims global elites are planning to use advanced technology to stage celestial events in order to manipulate the world's population. 'Now you see why I mention Project Blue Beam every week on my podcast.....,' the 72-year-old wrote on X. The theory dates back to the 1990s, but it recently found traction again online as commentators such as Barr claim that the US government could stage an alien invasion as a pretext for imposing authoritarian rule. Others have also espoused the idea that the Biden Administration could be behind the drone activity, given its refusal to provide reassuring answers amid the mounting crisis. Footage has emerged of what appears to be a ' UFO ' hovering in the skies over New Jersey before suddenly accelerating away leaving the family who were watching lost for words Swarms of drones have been spotted in the skies of New Jersey for weeks, sparking officials to call for a 'limited state of emergency' Former CIA operations officer Laura Ballman revealed her chilling theory that the drones lighting up multi-state skies may be a 'classified exercise.' She told Fox News Live that the drone sightings are 'extremely unsettling,' and shared her theory that they may be part of a technology 'test,' orchestrated by the federal government. Ballman said: 'Now in terms of who is behind this, seeing the statements that have been made by John Kirby, who has said that these objects are not operating illegally. 'Coupled with the several op-eds that have been out there in the last 24 hours about the need to look at our detection systems , [it] makes me think perhaps this is actually a classified exercise to test either evasion technology or detection technology in urban areas.' White House National Security spokesman John Kirby has said the aircraft are not foreign - and they may not even be drones . 'We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,' Kirby told reporters on Thursday. 'The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating these sightings, and they're working closely with the state and local law enforcement to provide resources using numerous detection methods to better understand their origin,' Kirby said. He said the agencies used 'very sophisticated electronic detection technologies' but 'have not been able to – and neither state or local law enforcement – corroborate any of the reported visual sightings.' 'To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft being operated lawfully,' he said, denying the aircraft were even drones. Yet, this new computing power comes with a hefty price – unprecedented power consumption. Following the United Nation's COP29 conference that took place last month, which introduced the first ever Digitalisation Day and Declaration on Green Digital Action, the tech industry is facing increasing pressure to get carbon emissions under control and counter climate change – and the channel is no exception. Unfortunately for business leaders, this coincides with the same time that companies and leadership teams are looking to prioritise sustainability targets – 74% of public companies plan to invest in sustainability reporting technology and tools over the next year, according to a recent report from Deloitte. This leaves us with the question, how can we protect the planet and our cloud usage? Channel leaders can navigate this 'perfect storm' by using the GreenOps approach to optimize their resources. This, paired with the adoption of more efficient cloud architectures and the development of a sustainability-focused culture can hit the sweet spot – meeting environmental targets without sacrificing any of the benefits of cloud. Value of a GreenOps approach At a high level, GreenOps is not dissimilar to FinOps. Both look to maximize cloud efficiency and usage for organizations. But where FinOps focuses on the financial and business value first, GreenOps puts environmental impact front and center. When it comes to implementation, the two approaches actually go hand in hand. Optimizing operations often leads to a decrease in both costs and environmental impact. Admittedly, some sustainable practices do require significant investment, but the GreenOps approach emphasizes balance with operational efficiency at the heart. LOS ANGELES — We take you back to Monday morning in Minnesota and Cole Perfetti, eager to shake a nine-game scoring slump, is the first Winnipeg Jets skater to hit the ice ahead of that night’s game against the Wild. The young forward is joined a few minutes later by veteran teammate Nino Niederreiter, and the pair are taking turns firing shots towards the net. John Woods / THE CANADIAN PRESS files Although it has been a while since Cole Perfetti has found the back of the net, the Jets forward is contributing to the team’s success in other ways. “Especially right now, when the puck’s not going in, I like to get out there and just work on a couple things shot wise,” Perfetti told the on Wednesday. “I just want to see the puck go in the net, and right now it’s just about getting extra reps doing that.” Practice makes perfect, right? In principle, sure, but on this day, one of Niederreiter’s pucks goes right off the crossbar and directly into the face of Perfetti, who crumples to the ice. “Luckily it hit me in the visor. That could have been bad,” Perfetti said. That little brush with disaster perfectly sums up the current state of things for Perfetti, whose drought extended to 10 games in a 4-1 victory over Minnesota. Everything that can go wrong right now seemingly is going wrong. Fast forward to Wednesday, when Perfetti was once again the first to take a twirl at Crypto.com Arena to get ready for a battle with the Los Angeles Kings. He was also the last to wrap his morning skate, aside from healthy scratches David Gustafsson and Dylan Coghlan, the injured Logan Stanley and backup goaltender Eric Comrie. Perfetti would have stayed even longer but his stick snapped in half as he tried a shot — a sign it was time to hit the showers. To be clear, you won’t get any “woe is me” stuff from Perfetti, who signed a two-year, US$6.5 million contract a few days after training camp began after the Jets balked at signing a long-term extension at this point in his career, clearly wanting to see a larger sample size before the decide the true worth of the 10th-overall pick from 2020. “I just want to see the puck go in the net.” In fact, Perfetti likes where parts of his game are, even if the puck doesn’t really want to play along. “It’s frustrating, but if you’re getting the chances, if you’re doing the right things... I’d be more worried if I wasn’t getting the chances and we weren’t as a line and knew we were doing something wrong,” said Perfetti. He cites the fact he’s hit several posts in recent games, not to mention being the victim of a robbery last Saturday night by Nashville Predators goaltender Juuse Saros. “It’s going to come eventually,” said Perfetti, who skates with Vlad Namestnikov and Nikolaj Ehlers. “Once the dam breaks for me personally and for us as a line, I feel like it’s really going to start to come and we’ll start to see the puck go into the net, which will be great.” Of course, it helps that the Jets entered pay Wednesday with an NHL-best 18-4-0 record, which mean’s Perfetti’s personal power outage hasn’t impacted the team as a whole. “You can find other ways to contribute to a win,” said Perfetti, who has chipped in with four assists in the last 10 games and is now up to 15 points (4G, 11A) in 22 games to sit in a tie for seventh in team scoring. Lynne Sladky / The Associated Press Files Perfetti checks Florida Panthers' Evan Rodrigues into the boards during a game in Sunrise, Fla. “No, the puck’s not going in the net right now, but worry about my defensive game, worry about how we are playing when we are on the ice. Are we still attacking and not giving the other team any great looks? That’s what you have to do right now. Goals are going to come, and they’re going to come in waves. But right now, while the luck is not on your side, do all the other little things correct and help your team win that way.” Perfetti has been down this road before, including a career-long 23 game span last year in which he failed to light the lamp and had just two assists. That led to several stints as a healthy scratch and what he admits was a crisis in confidence which ultimately proved to be a painful but necessary lesson. “Going through it for the first time really ever last year, you learn a lot about how not to deal with it. I feel like I kind of let it eat me up,” Perfetti said. “Goals are going to come, and they’re going to come in waves. But right now, while the luck is not on your side, do all the other little things correct and help your team win that way.” “The more it went on and on, the more I pressed and the more it didn’t come and the worse I felt about it.” As a result, he’s taking a much different approach this time around, one he believes is translating into solid overall play. His coach, Scott Arniel, concurs. “His game isn’t all centred around just scoring goals and sometimes when it doesn’t go in, you have a tendency to get farther away from the net,” said Arniel. “He recognizes that when he gets inside more, he’ll get those looks. He’s had some Grade-A’s. Sooner or later, they’ll go in. He has other responsibilities. Hopefully he starts off and gets a crazy bounce or something or an empty-netter to go in and that just gets him going and feeling good again. But I’ve really liked his game. He’s playing really well without the puck.” Perhaps a dose of good karma will get the hockey gods on his side. Last Friday night in Pittsburgh, at the start of this season-long road six game road trip, Perfetti had a chance to score his fifth of the year on a breakaway bid with the Penguins having pulled Tristan Jarry for an extra attacker. Rather than shoot, he passed to teammate Kyle Connor who had joined him on what was a 2-on-0. Connor is the team’s leading scorer and certainly doesn’t need help in that department, but this gesture allowed him to record his first Gordie Howe hat track, having recorded an assist and a fight against Sidney Crosby earlier in the game. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “I’d love the goal. Obviously want to see the puck go in the net myself right now,” said Perfetti. “But as soon as I got the puck, I knew I was getting it to him. That’s all I was thinking about, getting him his Gordie Howe.” Make no mistake: A little gesture like that goes a long way when it comes to team building. “Obviously everyone wants to score goals and that’s the main objective of the game,” said Perfetti. “But at the same time the more you press and put pressure on yourself, it’s just going to mount up and the more you do that, the less chances you’re going to score. Because now you’re gripping your stick when you do get a chance, or you’re beating yourself up if you miss a chance. Eventually it’s going to go. I’m just waiting for the game that it comes.” mike.mcintyre@freepress.mb.ca X and Bluesky: @mikemcintyrewpg Mike McIntyre is a sports reporter whose primary role is covering the Winnipeg Jets. Aruba’s Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) continues to enhance its services with the introduction of a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) machine. The Minister of Public Health, the Hospital’s Board of Directors, and the director of AZV signed an agreement for the introduction of this machine. With this equipment, the hospital can treat patients requiring 100% oxygen therapy, as well as provide this service to divers who encounter problems while abroad. The Minister of Public Health, Dangui Oduber, expressed his satisfaction and pride in the hospital’s investment in the Hyperbaric Chamber. For many years, there has been a desire to acquire such equipment, but financial limitations had previously made it impossible. In recent years, there has been a focus on improving care quality and service, as well as investing in prevention. For a long time, Dr. Yuri Caceres had discussed the matter with the minister, and the hospital’s director of the Board of Directors expressed the desire to invest in a Hyperbaric Chamber, which has significant benefits for patients, particularly those with injuries. Additionally, it will serve divers who choose Aruba as a destination. The team explored the possibility of financing the project, and the investment of several million florins was finally secured. It is expected that both insured patients and others will benefit from the chamber. With an improved financial outlook and the strengthened AZV funds, the collaboration between the hospital, AZV, and the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands, along with the Aruba Tourism Authority (A.T.A.), led to the purchase of the Hyperbaric Chamber. This investment will help treat patients with injuries through the oxygen tank, potentially reducing the need for amputations. The service will also be offered to divers who experience problems while diving. The hospital is excited that after years of effort, the acquisition of the machine is finally a reality and will elevate the quality of care. Gregory Croeze, a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, stated that the hospital’s vision is to provide accessible care for all, regardless of background, and at a high standard. To achieve this vision, the hospital decided in recent years to innovate and invest not only in human capital but also in medical equipment and technology. The idea of a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber was discussed years ago, and long-term planning was necessary to determine the appropriate equipment and where to install it. A case and plan were developed and presented to AZV. The hospital is grateful for AZV’s support, and they concluded that the project could finally begin. Different stakeholders were brought together to start this initiative. Croeze thanked Jacco Vroegop for making the project possible. Jacco Vroegop, director of HOH, thanked everyone who assisted with the project, which is vital for the population of Aruba, including those visiting the island. He expressed enthusiasm about the hospital’s acquisition of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which is expected to be operational by August. He is pleased that the island will have this equipment, as it was previously lacking. It is important to have this machine for people who dive, as it will improve safety. He noted that many people suffer from injuries, some of which require amputations. With the new equipment, it is hoped that fewer amputations will be necessary, improving the quality of life for patients. This is a key step towards improving care quality. Edwin Jacobs, director of AZV, stated that the hospital is the largest and most important partner they have on the island. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the hospital, especially considering its significance to Aruba. He also mentioned that when AZV was introduced, there were three main goals related to healthcare; AZV aims to provide affordable health insurance, quality healthcare, and efficient medical care. Following the pandemic and economic recovery through tourism, this was the right time to implement a system that can control future healthcare spending. This year, AZV has focused on sustainable and efficient care, ensuring that there is still room for investment in care quality. This project will contribute to improving the quality of care, with a positive impact on the health and lives of people in Aruba. Commander Tim van Wijk, representative of the Ministry of Defense and the Marines Barracks in Savaneta, explained that the Marine Barracks facilitates many diving trainings, with national and international certifications, but safety could not always be guaranteed. For a “dive tank,” they had to go to Curaçao, where the military has the necessary equipment. It is great news that the “dive tank” has now arrived. They began thinking about ways to sustain the project to ensure successful outcomes. Dr. Yuri Caceres, the specialist behind the project, mentioned that patients will benefit from using the tank. He thanked all stakeholders, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Board of Directors for their confidence and support in making the project a reality. In the past, Caceres worked with oxygen tanks in the Netherlands and has long wanted to bring this technology to Aruba, recognizing its benefits. After ten years of efforts, the ministry and the Board of Directors helped achieve this goal. Now it is a reality, and Caceres is pleased that the project has come to fruition. One of the key indications for using the tank is treating injuries, especially since many patients have diabetes and chronic wounds. Unfortunately, amputations still occur, but with the new tank, the hope is to reduce the need for amputations. The goal is to preserve limbs, allowing people to remain mobile and heal more quickly. The Washington Commanders put kicker Austin Seibert on injured reserve Tuesday, just over 48 hours since he missed an extra point that would have tied the score with 21 seconds left against Dallas. Seibert also missed a field-goal attempt and another extra point in the loss to the Cowboys. He missed the previous two games with a right hip injury but said afterward he was fine and made the decision to play. The Commanders filled that roster spot by signing running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. off their practice squad. Austin Ekeler had a concussion and Brian Robinson Jr. sprained an ankle Sunday.
