Roar coach Ruben Zadkovich insists Brisbane is “improving” despite being the only A-League team yet to register a point this season. The competition cellar dwellers have lost each of their three matches and face another tough battle in Saturday’s Unite Round clash against the unbeaten Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium. “The position on the ladder’s disappointing and we haven’t taken any points yet, but there are some strong indicators in our performances ... and we have to stay very process driven at this point in time and keep improving, but we’re at that point where we want to win as well,” Zadkovich said. “We’re hungry. The team’s been training really hard in this (international) break. It’s another opportunity for us to get better, and we need to. “Attitude and mentality-wise, the players have been in all three games really competitive but probably just lacking some quality in some moments under pressure to go and deliver. “We’re confident, though, that if we keep improving, which we’ve certainly done in the three games, that the process is going to serve us well and it’s going to turn into better performances, better results and better outcomes.” With the Roar hoping to develop a host of young players, Zadkovich paid credit to Adelaide for showing a “really good blueprint” on how to successfully bring youth through a club system, with the obvious example being teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda, who left the Reds earlier this year to join German giants Bayern Munich. “Where they have the advantages is that they’re a lot further down that process than we are as a club at the moment,” the Brisbane mentor said. “They’ve got a really strong association with South Australian football. They’re working in tandem with that, which we’re trying to do here now with Football Queensland in trying to build better pathways and better processes for players to come through. “It is a work in progress. It’s going to take a long time before it’s to the level we need it to be, but we focus on the small steps and small gains. “We want to ... bring through more and more of our own homegrown talent into this squad, which will make us more sustainable long term as a club business-wise. “It’s also about the right game, right moment, right opportunity for those players and making sure that when they do come in that they’re ready.” The Roar will again be without Neicer Acosta on Saturday, with the Ecuadorian winger to miss a third successive match with a leg injury. “He’s probably still two or three weeks away, which is disappointing because we had him earmarked to play a certain role in our line-up, but one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain, and there are players putting their hands up, so that’s given me some selection headaches for sure,” Zadkovich said. I know, I know, it’s the “offseason.” The CME Tour Championship and Tour Championship are behind us. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore the golf. This week, LPGA and PGA Tour pros are teaming up at the Grant Thornton, meaning we will get a ton of good content, like when Disney Channel had those crossover episodes when we were kids. As much as I love watching PGA Tour events and LPGA Tour events on their own, there’s something special about players from each coming together for a week. It’s definitely a competitive atmosphere at Tiburon, but a big part of it leans into bonding and fun. The pros’ personalities are going to be on display in ways we aren’t usually used to over the next few weeks. Team events tend to bring these out, and the Grant Thornton is no exception. Same thing with the PNC Championship. The pros may be at work, but in a “bring-your-kid-to-work” kind of way. It’s more about the shared experience than anything else. So make sure you’re paying attention to social media over the next 10 days or so, because I have a feeling we are going to get some hilarious, wholesome and fun content from both he Grant Thornton and the PNC. (Remember, Tiger’s “big dog” meme originated at the PNC.) This last note really only applies to those who attend the Grant Thornton and/or PNC Championship, but I’ve learned there are few things I enjoy more than being at a Ritz-Carlton golf course, especially near the holidays. There are endless places to explore, and you can’t beat the food or clubhouse. A wholesome press conference My favorite part of Thursday at the Grant Thornton Invitational was Lydia Ko and Jason Day’s press conference. It’s clear the defending champions are giddy to be back, but it’s even more clear how much Day and Ko respect and admire each other. A few excerpts from the transcript: Day: I’ve heard numerous — actually, a lot of stories about how she’s one of the nicest people on the LPGA and obviously I think a lot of people know that by now. Pure class on and off the golf course. Ko: I remember Jessica Korda was like, oh, you’re playing with Jason, right? She was like, you’re playing with the nicest person in the world, you guys are going to be the nicest team. Ko: When I played the Tour Championship a few weeks ago, I was like, man, it would be nice if I had a partner like Jason, it would just make my life a lot easier. Day: I’m a massive fan of Lydia and her game. More so as a person as well, she’s tremendous. Ko: I actually told multiple people this, of all the players I’ve played with, Jason’s game, whether it was ball-striking, with the driver, iron, wedges and putting overall was actually the best player I’ve seen. Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 The recipe to Golden State’s 128-120 loss to the Brooklyn Nets included one part of their typically poor free-throw shooting, one part unusually indifferent defense and – what surely is the most maddening – four parts of voluntary charity. The surest way to compromise any defense is by giving the opponent live-ball turnovers. “It’s impossible to defend it,” said Stephen Curry, who committed three turnovers. “And that can decide a game. We won the possession game, got 10 more shots than they did. Almost the same amount of threes (19 to Brooklyn’s 20). They got 15 more free-throw makes. But that 14 points on easy buckets or easy possessions, whether it’s them knocking down transition threes or getting to the basket, there’s no defense for it.” The Warriors handed out 13 turnovers, not a horrible number. What was damaging is that those turnovers gave Brooklyn 26 points and essentially paved a path to Golden State’s first back-to-back defeats this season – both of which came after coughing up large third-quarter leads. They led by 17 inside the final two minutes of the third quarter at San Antonio on Saturday and lost by 10 . They led by 18 with less than seven minutes remaining in the third quarter Monday and lost by eight before a sellout crowd (18,064) at Chase Center. The Nets began their surge over those final seven minutes and continued until the final buzzer. They outscored the Warriors 60-34 over the final 19 minutes. “We’ve generally done a better job of taking care of the ball, for the most part,” coach Steve Kerr said. “Thirteen turnovers [are] not a bad number, but they scored every time off them. There were some bad ones that really hurt; they were kind of automatic conversations. The ones that we had really took our momentum away, so we’ve just got to keep getting better.” The Warriors are averaging 14.6 turnovers per game, roughly the same as last season (14.3). The league has changed such that they were 23rd in turnovers last season yet have climbed to 15th-best this season. This is, however, the fifth game this season in which their donations have given opponents at least 20 points. The Nets scored 10 points off turnovers in the third quarter, which they closed with a 21-6 run. Much of what fueled their comeback can be attributed to Golden State’s live-ball turnovers. “We can’t set up our defense,” Gary Payton II explained. “At that point, we’re scrambling around. And if we’re scrambling, somebody is going to be open at some point and they get a good look. And teams are hitting them. “If we take away the live turnovers and get back on defense, I’d like our chances with our set defense.” By the time the Warriors reduced their live-ball turnovers, the energy had gone to the Nets, who scored five more gift points while finishing the Warriors in the fourth quarter. Brooklyn after halftime shot 56.1 percent from the field, including 45.5 percent from distance. That’s successive games in which the Warriors staggered toward the finish. The Warriors sit in second place in the Western Conference. They have an impressive 12-5 record. Yet even with their revamped roster, they’re displaying disturbing shades of last season, which ended with them trudging into an offseason without playoffs. “You don’t want to overreact, right?” Kerr said. “Two games ago, everyone was feeling great. We were 12-3. We’ve had big leads in late third in both games. We have to address what’s happened in these last two games. I don’t think it’s a fatigue thing. I think it’s an execution thing. “We need to execute better, and that’s on me as the coach,” he added. “We’ll get them in here tomorrow for a practice, which we need, and we’ll get back to executing better. Giving up 41 in the fourth, that’s tough to overcome.” Practice will, without a doubt, focus on execution. There also will be sufficient time to practice free throws. Either the Warriors will curb their tendency to give free money to opponents, or their impressive first month will be a distant memory – or a wistful game of “If Only” – when confronting the final weeks of the regular season.
