OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence Wednesday that Elon Musk would not use his proximity to Donald Trump to harm business rivals, calling such actions "profoundly un-American." Speaking at the New York Times DealBook conference, Altman addressed concerns about Musk's announced role heading a new Department of Government Efficiency in the incoming Donald Trump administration, and whether he might use it to favor his own companies. "I may turn out to be wrong, but I believe pretty strongly that Elon will do the right thing," Altman said. "It would be profoundly un-American to use political power to hurt your competitors and advantage your own businesses." Even if there are "lots of things not to like about him... it would go so deeply against the values I believe he holds very dear to himself that I'm not that worried about it." Musk, an OpenAI co-founder who later departed the company, is currently suing Altman's firm and Microsoft, claiming they shifted from the project's original nonprofit mission. He has since launched xAI, reportedly valued at $50 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable startups. Altman said that the court battle was "tremendously sad" and that he once saw Musk as "a mega hero." Musk became a close ally of Trump during his campaign, spending over $100 million to boost his presidential bid and joining him at rallies. Since the election victory, he has been a frequent presence in the Trump transition and was reportedly on the line when Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the president-elect to congratulate him on winning the election. The tycoon's businesses have deep connections with governments -- both in the United States and elsewhere -- and his new position has raised concerns about conflict of interest. During the interview, Altman also lowered expectations for the importance of OpenAI's models achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a benchmark of human-level intelligence the company has long set as the goal for its technology. "My guess is we will hit AGI sooner than most people in the world think, and it will matter much less," he said. "A lot of the safety concerns that we and others expressed actually don't come at the AGI moment... AGI can get built. The world goes on mostly the same way," he said. arp/aha

Still, many questions remain about the tournament as well as the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with three games in South America. Here are some of the key issues that need to be answered over the next decade: Saudi Arabia proposes 15 stadiums — eight still on paper — in five cities: Eight in the capital Riyadh, four in the Red Sea port city Jeddah, and one each in Abha, Al Khobar and Neom, the planned futuristic mega-project. Each would have at least 40,000 seats for World Cup games. The opening game and final are set for a 92,000-seat venue planned in Riyadh. Some designs are vivid. In Neom, the stadium is planned 350 meters (yards) above street level and one near Riyadh is designed to be atop a 200-meter cliff with a retractable wall of LED screens. Saudi Arabia aims to host all 104 games, though there has been speculation that some games could be played in neighboring or nearby countries. Surely not in the traditional World Cup period of June-July, when temperatures in Saudi Arabia routinely exceed 40 Celsius (104 degrees). FIFA moved the Qatar-hosted World Cup to November-December 2022, though those dates were not loved by most European clubs and leagues whose seasons were interrupted. Also, that slot is complicated in 2034 by the holy month of Ramadan through mid-December and Riyadh hosting the multi-sport Asian Games. January 2034 could be a possibility even though that would be just before the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The International Olympic Committee has signaled it won’t be opposed to back-to-back major events. In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Saudi World Cup bid official Hammad Albalawi said the precise dates of the tournament are up the world soccer body. “That’s a decision by FIFA. We stand ready to be part of this conversation. But ultimately it’s a FIFA decision together with the confederations,” Albalawi said. Giving more rights and freedoms to women in a traditionally conservative society is fundamental to Saudi messaging around the modernization program known as Vision 2030. The kingdom decided in 2017 to let women attend sports events, initially in major cities and in family zones separate from men-only sections. By 2034, at the promised pace of social reforms, female fans should not be restricted. Saudi Arabia launched a women’s professional soccer league in 2022 with players joining from clubs in Europe. They face no restrictions playing in shorts and with hair uncovered. The Saudi prohibition of alcohol is clear and understood before FIFA signs any sponsor deals for 2034. But will there be any exceptions? The alcohol issue was problematic for the World Cup in Qatar because the expectation was created that beer sales would be allowed at stadiums even before Qatar won its bid in 2010. One year later, FIFA extended a long-time deal to have Budweiser as the official World Cup beer through 2022. Qatar then backtracked on that promise three days before the first game, causing confusion and the sense of a promise broken. In Qatar, alcohol was served only at luxury suites at the stadiums. Visitors could also have a drink in some hotel bars. But Saudi Arabia has even stricter rules on alcohol — and there is no indication that will change. Albalawi noted that Saudi Arabia has successfully hosted dozens of sports events where alcohol wasn't served. “We’re creating a safe and secure family environment for fans to bring their families into our stadiums,” he said. Saudi promises to reform and enforce labor laws, and fully respect migrant workers, have been accepted by FIFA but face broad skepticism from rights groups and trade unions. A formal complaint is being investigated by the U.N.-backed International Labor Organization. Protecting the migrant workers needed to build stadiums and other tournament projects — a decade after it was a defining issue for Qatar — looms as a signature challenge for Saudi Arabia. Saudi-Israeli relations had been improving when FIFA all but gave the 2034 World Cup to the kingdom on Oct. 4 last year. Three days later Hamas attacked Israel and diplomacy got more complicated. Any soccer federation bidding to host a FIFA tournament accepts a basic principle that whichever team qualifies is welcome. That did not stop Indonesia putting up barriers last year to Israel coming for the men’s Under-20 World Cup. Indonesia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel which had qualified through a European tournament nine months before the issue flared. FIFA moved the entire tournament to Argentina and the Israeli team reached the semifinals. Israel played at the 1970 World Cup but has never advanced through qualifying in Europe, where it has been a member of UEFA for 30 years. Europe should have 16 places in the 48-team World Cup in Saudi Arabia. Most of the attention at the FIFA Congress on Wednesday was on the Saudi decision, but the soccer body and its members also formally approved the hosts of the 2030 World Cup — the most spread out and longest ever. One game each in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the original host in 1930, will be played from June 8-9. The tournament resumes four days later for the other 101 games shared between Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Six countries, three continents, multiple languages and currencies. Fans traveling on planes, trains, automobiles and boats across about 14 kilometers (10 miles) of water between Spain and Morocco. The final is due on July 21, 2030 and a decision on where it will be played could cause some tension between the host countries. Morocco wants it in the world’s biggest soccer venue — the planned 115,000-seat King Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca. Spain, meanwhile, has proposed to host the final in either of the remodeled home stadiums of club giants Real Madrid or Barcelona. ___ Associated Press writer Baraa Anwer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, contributed to this report.

For decades, compliance has been viewed as a necessary but costly burden — a box to check to avoid penalties, maintain licenses and keep regulators at bay. But 2024 marked a turning point for compliance in the payments and financial services sectors, in part marked by FinTech collapses and tightening oversight . Still, the flip side of the coin was that, by turning regulatory challenges into opportunities, firms can not only strengthen their market positions but also set new standards for innovation and trust. The payments and financial services industry operates under a patchwork of global regulations that grow more intricate each year. In 2024, key drivers include heightened scrutiny from regulators, the rapid expansion of cross-border payments and the proliferation of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and even blockchain, as well as a backdrop of financial institution and FinTech partnerships and a sprawling third-party landscape. These developments have forced companies to rethink their approach to compliance, moving beyond reactive measures to proactive strategies. By focusing resources on the areas that pose the biggest threats, payments and financial services firms are working to turn compliance into a competitive advantage in 2025. This year showed that compliance has shifted from being a defensive shield to a strategic asset. By embedding compliance into the core of their operations, firms are not just avoiding penalties but helping to build trust, improve efficiency and enhance customer experiences. Read more: Financial Landscape Unprepared for Increasing FinTech Influence, Oversight Group Says Risk-Based Compliance: Prioritizing What Matters Most At the heart of the ongoing compliance transformation is the shift to risk-based compliance frameworks. Rather than spreading resources thinly across all areas, firms are now increasingly turning to advanced analytics and data-driven insights to focus on the highest-risk activities and relationships. Real-time data analysis helps pinpoint areas that pose the greatest regulatory and reputational risks, while automating low-risk compliance tasks frees up teams to concentrate on strategic initiatives. By prioritizing high-risk areas, firms can optimize their compliance budgets and personnel. Another key factor driving compliance as a growth engine is the integration of compliance processes across the organization. In the past, compliance functions often operated in silos, disconnected from other departments such as finance, operations and IT. This fragmented approach led to inefficiencies, duplication of effort and missed opportunities. Throughout 2024, firms worked to break down these silos by integrating compliance into their enterprise-wide strategies. This holistic approach helped ensure that compliance considerations were embedded into every decision, from product development to market expansion. As PYMNTS has reported , regulators are increasingly turning their attention to the downstream risks associated with know your customer (KYC), compliance and risk management, fraud and the financial safety of FinTechs and their BaaS partners. As a result, many banks operating BaaS business models have been de-risking by offboarding higher-risk and lower-value programs. Managing third-party relationships has become a focal point for compliance efforts, particularly as organizations expand their ecosystems to include a growing array of partners, vendors and service providers. A single weak link in the chain can expose firms to significant risks, from data breaches to regulatory violations. In response, firms are eyeing and embracing more sophisticated tools to manage third-party risk. These solutions combine real-time data feeds, predictive analytics and customizable dashboards to provide a comprehensive view of third-party compliance. By identifying and addressing risks early, organizations can maintain the integrity of their operations while fostering stronger partnerships. Read more: Synapse’s Downfall Provides Hard Lessons for Its B2B Partners Compliance as a Trust Builder As 2025 approaches, the role of compliance in the payments and financial services landscape will continue to evolve. Firms that embrace a risk-based, integrated and tech-enabled approach may find themselves to be well-positioned to navigate the challenges ahead while unlocking new opportunities. For example, a payments company that consistently demonstrates its commitment to compliance may gain faster regulatory approvals, enabling it to launch new products ahead of competitors. Similarly, firms with strong compliance records are more likely to attract investment and secure partnerships, fueling long-term growth. In today’s competitive landscape, trust is a critical differentiator. Customers, investors and regulators expect firms to operate with transparency and integrity. By embracing a robust and proactive compliance strategy, organizations can build and maintain this trust, opening the door to new opportunities.Webb observations discover new planet in Kepler-51 'super-puff' system

In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/hDd5bkHwXr — Arsenal (@Arsenal) December 27, 2024 Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Three points that take Arsenal into second 🪜 #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/Dx3s6XlwQ2 — Premier League (@premierleague) December 27, 2024 Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Just over an hour on the clock. #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/JXNipX1J1Z — IPSWICH TOWN (@IpswichTown) December 27, 2024 Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool.Ambcrypto CEO Jeevan Thomas On Nfts: Revolutionizing Digital Ownership

After seven years on the job, TCU Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati is finalizing plans to head east to the University of South Carolina, according to reports from FootballScoop and ESPN . Donati would take over from Ray Tanner, who is stepping down from the athletic director position after 11 years and transitioning to a new role at the university. The news comes on the heels of the announcement this week that TCU’s longtime Chancellor Victor Boschini plans to step down this coming June. Daniel W. Pullin, the university’s president, will step into the role. TCU officials have not yet confirmed Donati’s exit. FootballScoop reported that a formal announcement is expected in the coming days, citing multiple sources with direct knowledge. Donati arrived at TCU in 2011, serving as deputy athletic director under Chris Del Conte. After Del Conte announced his move to UT-Austin in 2017, Donati was named to the top job. During his tenure, TCU programs won eight team national championships and 11 Big 12 Conference titles, according to the TCU website . Following the 2021 exit of legendary head football coach Gary Patterson, Donati was responsible for bringing then-SMU coach Sonny Dykes to Fort Worth. In his first season, Dykes led the Horned Frogs to new heights, culminating in a College Football Playoff win and a national championship berth in 2023. The baseball and men’s basketball teams have also made recent appearances in the NCAA tournament, while men’s tennis and women’s rifle are powerhouses in their respective sports, winning multiple national championships since Donati took over. TCU women’s basketball has also reached its highest-ever ranking in the AP Poll this season after Donati attracted head coach Mark Campbell, whose previous stops at Sacramento State and Oregon resulted in eight conference championships, to lead the program in 2023. Campbell recruited high-profile transfers Sedona Prince and Hailey Van Lith , who won an Olympic bronze medal for the U.S. as part of the 3×3 competition in Paris this summer. The Frogs are currently ranked No. 9. Donati has also been an outspoken voice on revenue sharing with college athletes. Armed with experience as general counsel at a sports and entertainment agency prior to coming to TCU, Donati announced in late June that TCU will participate in the highest permissible level of revenue sharing with college athletes, at nearly $21 million. TCU officials have said that success in their athletic programs leads to more interest in the school and a spike in applications during signature moments. Donati called athletics “one of the four strategic pillars” at the university that will continue to play a key role in the next 10 years and beyond. “At TCU, athletics serves as the front porch of our university,” Donati wrote in a newsletter earlier this year. “We are committed to maintaining TCU’s position as a member of the top echelon of athletics — competitive at the highest level. Our athletics programs add value to TCU’s reputation as a leading university, enhance student recruitment efforts and help define TCU’s unrivaled student experience.” Donati attracted interest from the University of Southern California to be their next athletic director last year, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported he pulled his name from consideration. Donati is one of the top 10 highest-paid employees at TCU with a salary of $1.33 million, according to the university’s 2023 tax filing . That’s higher than Tanner’s current salary of $1.175 million, according to South Carolina news outlet The State . Matthew Sgroi contributed reporting. Bob Menendez, who resigned as New Jersey's senior senator after his conviction on federal bribery charges, is asking the court to delay his scheduled Jan. 29 sentencing. Attorneys for the former Democratic congressman urged the judge Thursday to postpone the hearing due to the upcoming trial of his wife, Nadine Menendez, who's also accused of accepting cash, gold bars and luxury cars in exchange for political favors. The lawyers claim that Bob Menendez's sentencing, which would take place nine days into Nadine's trial, " poses an unnecessary and overwhelming risk of poisoning the proceedings" against her. " It is inevitable that Senator Menendez’s sentencing will be covered by every major (and minor) news organization, with particularly intense focus among media in New York and New Jersey," defense attorneys Adam Fee and Avi Weitzman wrote. "... In the modern age of social media and wall-to-wall news coverage, it is simply not realistic to expect that the jurors — even if instructed to avoid media coverage of the case or 'related cases' — could miss the news of a sentence actually being imposed on Nadine’s husband and co-defendant." Fee and Weitzman also cited Nadine's ongoing health issues as a reason for the request. Her trial was postponed in July as she underwent treatment for breast cancer. "Given Nadine’s medical situation, Senator Menendez often tends to his wife’s physical and emotional needs," the letter continued. "Sentencing him during his wife’s trial will of course take a tremendous emotional toll on both Senator Menendez and his family. We submit that the need for our system to reflect compassion for those charged and convicted of crimes weighs in favor of adjourning the Senator’s sentencing until after Nadine’s trial concludes." Barry Coburn, a lawyer representing Nadine, also sent a letter to Judge Sidney H. Stein supporting the request Thursday. The Menendez corruption scandal broke in 2023, when federal prosecutors indicted the senator and his wife. The couple allegedly used Menendez's political influence to meddle in matters benefitting three New Jersey businessmen, as well as the Egyptian and Qatari governments . They received numerous gifts for these services, including mortgage payments and Formula 1 tickets. Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) assumed Menendez's seat after an easy victory in November . Gov. Phil Murphy (D) appointed the senator early to replace George Helmy, who had held position for just under three months following Menendez's resignation. Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada's next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump's latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn't clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump's 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump's team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada's new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc's spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words "some information about Canada for Americans." Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024.
