NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for tried for a third time Friday to persuade a judge to let him leave jail while he awaits his but a decision won’t come until next week. Judge Arun Subramanian said at a hearing that he will release his decision on Combs’ latest request for bail after Combs’ lawyers and federal prosecutors file letters addressing outstanding issues. Those letters are due at noon on Monday, Subramanian said. Combs’ lawyers pitched having him await trial under around-the-clock surveillance either his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge scoffed at that location — an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their plan essentially amounts to putting Combs on house arrest, with strict limits on who he has contact with. But prosecutors argue that Combs has routinely flouted jail rules and can’t be trusted not to interfere with witnesses or the judicial process. “The argument that he’s a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions isn’t factually accurate,” Combs lawyer Anthony Ricco argued. “The idea that he’s an out-of-control individual who has to be detained isn’t factually accurate.” Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to for years with help from a network of associates and employees while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. His trial is slated to begin May 5. The Bad Boy Records founder remains locked up at a where he spent his Nov. 4 birthday. Two other judges that Combs would be a danger to the community if he is released and an appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his bail request. Friday’s hearing was the second time Combs was in court this week. On Tuesday, a judge from using as evidence papers that were seized from his cell during jail-wide sweep for contraband and weapons at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Related Articles As he entered through a side door, Combs waved to relatives including his mother and several of his children in the courtroom gallery, tapping his hand to his heart and blowing kisses at them. He then hugged his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, before taking a seat at the defense table. He was not handcuffed or shackled and wore a beige jail uniform, occasionally pulling a pair of reading glasses from his pocket as he peered at papers in front of him. Prosecutors maintain that no bail conditions will mitigate the “risk of obstruction and dangerousness to others” of releasing Combs from jail. Prosecutors contend that while locked up the “I’ll Be Missing You” artist has orchestrated social media campaigns aimed at tainting the jury pool. They allege that he has also attempted to publicly leak materials he thinks would be helpful to his case and is contacting potential witnesses via third parties. “Simply put, the defendant cannot be trusted,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik argued. Combs’ lawyer Teny Geragos countered that, given the strict release conditions proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow rules.”Crescent Capital BDC, Inc. Morgan Rogers looked to have given Unai Emery’s side another famous win when he slammed a loose ball home at the death, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ruled Diego Carlos to have fouled Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the goal was chalked off. It was a disappointment for Villa, who remain unbeaten at home in their debut Champions League campaign and are still in contention to qualify automatically for the last 16. The Argentina international paraded his two Yashin Trophies on the pitch before kick-off at Villa Park and then showed why he won back-to-back FIFA awards when he denied Francisco Conceicao. Before Rogers’ moment of drama in the fourth minute of added time, the closest Villa came to scoring was in the first half when Lucas Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar. But a draw was a fair result which leaves Villa out of the top eight on goal difference and Juventus down in 19th. Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. The opening 30 minutes were forgettable before the game opened up. Ollie Watkins, still chasing his first Champions League goal, had Villa’s first presentable chance as he lashed an effort straight at Di Gregorio. Matty Cash then had a vicious effort from the resulting corner which was blocked by Federico Gatti and started a counter-attack which ended in Juventus striker Timothy Weah. Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when Digne’s 20-yard free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Martinez then produced his brilliant save just after the hour. A corner made its way through to the far post where Conceicao was primed to head in at the far post, but Martinez sprawled himself across goal to scoop the ball away. At the other end another fine goal-line block denied John McGinn as Manuel Locatelli got his foot in the way with Di Gregorio beaten. The game looked to be petering out until a last-gasp free-kick saw Rogers slam home, but whistle-happy official Gil Manzano halted the celebrations by ruling the goal out.Jimmy Carter once held the highest office in the land — but was just as content in his family home in small town Georgia. At the age of 56, having lost the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan , Jimmy Carter returned to Plains, Georgia , the small town where both he and his wife Rosalynn were born in the 1920s. From the White House , they moved back into the ranch house they built in the city in 1961. That modest home is where Carter peacefully died on Sunday at the age of 100. At the 2020 census, Plains, which to many is only known for being the birthplace of the Carters, had a population of 573. In 2022, the median household income was $36,138. The man Carter snatched the presidency from, Gerald Ford , was the first former president to take advantage of the plentiful opportunities to make money that now come easily to former occupants of the Oval Office. That wasn’t the way of the most humble president. “Carter did the opposite,” presidential historian Michael Beschloss told The Washington Post in 2018. The couple spoke to the paper from the home of their friend Jill Stucky, and the former first couple ate salmon and broccoli casserole on paper plates. The then-94 year-old former president drank ice water from a plastic solo cup and a glass of a “bargain-brand chardonnay,” the paper noted. When Rosalynn Carter died in November 2023, grandson Jason Carter told The New York Times that she once brought Tupperware on a commercial plane and began making sandwiches for her family as well as other passengers. “People were sitting there like, ‘Rosalynn Carter just made me this sandwich!’” he told the paper. “They couldn’t believe it. But she loved people. And she was a cool grandma. She was cool, like, she did tai chi with this sword.” While former presidents often fly on private jets, the Carters flew commercial — more evidence they prefered the humble life, not one of post-presidency fame. On a flight from Washington, D.C., to Atlanta in the summer of 2017, Carter walked the aisle, greeting passengers. Unlike other former presidents such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Carter didn’t make tens of millions of dollars from the private sector. He’s the only president in recent times, apart from former president Donald Trump, who returned to his before-presidency residence. While Trump returned to the glitzy Mar-a-Lago and, at times, Trump Tower, Carter went back to his two-bedroom ranch house assessed at $167,000. Carter told The Post in 2018 that he didn’t want to “capitalize financially on being in the White House.” “I don’t see anything wrong with it, I don’t blame other people for doing it,” he said at the time. “It just never had been my ambition to be rich.” Carter’s White House communications director, Gerald Rafshoon, told The Post that “he doesn’t like big shots, and he doesn’t think he’s a big shot.” Carter was the longest-living president and had the longest post-presidency clocking in at more than four decades. But he also cost less for the U.S. taxpayers than any other ex-president. According to the General Services Administration, the 2023 budget for Carter came in at $496,000, including his pension and miscellaneous expenses. The budgeted numbers for Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump were all over $1 million. Similarly, Carter’s office cost less than any other ex-president’s. For instance, in 2018, at $115,000, his office — the Carter Center in Atlanta — cost less than half of his fellow ex-presidents’, with Obama’s costing $536,000, Clinton’s $518,000, George W Bush’s $497,000, and George HW Bush’s costing $286,000, the agency stated. Carter could have built an office with living quarters in Atlanta, but he and Rosalynn stayed on a pullout couch for years before installing a Murphy bed. Having only worked for the federal government for four years — his single White House term — and not the required five, he didn’t receive federal retirement health benefits. He said that he received health benefits via Emory University, where he taught for decades. Carter returned to Plains after losing the 1980 election. His peanut business, held in a blind trust while he was in the White House, had a debt of $1 million, and he had to sell it. “We thought we were going to lose everything,” Rosalynn told The Post. Carter wrote 34 books, published between 1975 and 2018. They traced everything from his life and career to his faith, aging, fishing, woodworking and peace in the Middle East. They never fetched as much money as books written by other presidents, but with a pension for former presidents at $230,000 last year, according to the federal government , the Carters lived without having to worry about their finances. In 2018, Trump, a man who rarely misses an opportunity to brag about his wealth, was in the White House. At the time, Carter was asked if he thought a former president would ever live the humble way he did. “I hope so,” the man from Georgia told The Post . “But I don’t know.”
Breakthrough could revolutionize future of tick control November 27, 2024 Texas A&M AgriLife Communications Scientists create potential for genetic tools to control disease-spreading ticks. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email Research collaboration by the Texas A&M Department of Entomology and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, creates potential for genetic tools to control disease-spreading ticks. Jason Tidwell is seeking his doctorate as he works for the USDA-ARS Cattle Fever Tick Research Unit in Edinburg. (Courtesy photo) A recently published study by Jason Tidwell, a part-time graduate student in the Texas A&M College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Department of Entomology and full-time microbiologist with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service Cattle Fever Tick Research Unit at Edinburg, lays the foundation for potential new control methods against cattle fever ticks, the vectors of pathogens causing bovine babesiosis, historically known as Texas cattle fever. Tidwell primarily conducts genetic research in arthropods, specifically cattle fever ticks. The publication is based on a foundational research project that identified the genetic markers for sex determination in the tick species Rhipicephalus microplus, one of two invasive cattle fever tick species found in northern Mexico that constantly threaten re-establishment in the U.S. Collaboration could aid tick control Kimberly Lohmeyer, Ph.D., center director at the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory, Kerrville, said Tidwell's findings are a great example of a researcher identifying an unknown aspect of a pest's biology that could be leveraged and used as a novel control tool. Lohmeyer said Tidwell was hooked by the idea of using genetic control methods of an important pest and that his study's discovery now opens the door for innovative solutions against disease-carrying ticks. "This study sets the stage for advancements in how we protect U.S. livestock from cattle fever ticks," she said. "It answers a basic biological mystery about these ticks, but it is also a big step toward novel tools for the eradication program." Pete Teel, Ph.D., a Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientist in the Department of Entomology and one of Tidwell's co-advisors, said Tidwell's work identifying the mechanisms of sex determination is critical to understanding genetic control of tick reproduction. "It lays the foundation for potential genetic pest control methods that have been applied to other arthropods including the primary screwworm and several mosquito species," Teel said. A female Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Southern cattle fever tick. The USDA-Texas A&M Department of Entomology study identified chromosomes that determine whether ticks develop as male or female. The discovery could lead to novel control methods of these and other disease-spreading ticks. (Sam Craft/Texas A&M AgriLife) Research provides foundation for potential weapon against ticks The Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program is a joint effort of USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Services and the Texas Animal Health Commission to prevent the two species of cattle fever ticks from reestablishing in the U.S., Tidwell said. The program started in 1906 and eradicated the ticks in all 13 southern states and California, aside from a permanent quarantine zone in South Texas. "These ticks are the only vectors of pathogens causing bovine babesiosis, thus eliminate the ticks and you eliminate the risk of disease," Teel said. There are no approved anti-babesia vaccines, nor therapeutic drugs to treat the disease. The program has depended on chemical control with acaricides, pesticides for controlling ticks and mites. Discovery of genetic control tactics would be a novel approach, Teel said. New tactics are increasingly necessary because cattle fever ticks are showing increased resistance to acaricides. "One idea is to genetically manipulate sex ratios in the environment in ways that prevent reproduction and crash populations of the pest," Tidwell said. That genetic method has already shown promise to control Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which vector diseases like West Nile virus, Dengue, yellow fever and Zika to humans. In that way, Tidwell's discovery could lead to similar control methods for other tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease in humans. Aaron Tarone, Ph.D., an AgriLife Research scientist and professor in the Department of Entomology, and co-advisor to Tidwell, said any new control tool will need to be logistically, environmentally and economically sustainable, but agreed the study has opened the door for innovative advancements. "The next step will be building genomes of ticks of local reference from both here in Texas and Mexico to examine their genetic variation," Tarone said. "The whole genomics arena and technology associated with it has opened the door to so many possibilities when it comes to dealing with vectors that pose serious threats to human and animal health." Facing betrayal from an inside man infiltrating the Squid Games is nothing new for Seong Gi-hun ( Lee Jung-jae ) within the twisted “Squid Game” universe. When the first season of the Korean drama released on Netflix in 2021, watching Player 001, the old man Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su), be revealed as the creator of the games came as a total surprise for both Gi-hun and the viewer. But in “Squid Game” Season 2, which dropped Thursday, the unexpected involvement of head game guard The Front Man ( Lee Byung-hun ), whose real name is In-ho, is handled quite differently when he joins the games as Player 001 upon Gi-hun’s reentry into the competition. In-ho uses the fake name Young-il when he introduces himself to Gi-hun, who has returned to the games in “Squid Game” Season 2 to try to take them down from the inside, and conceals his real identity and motives while slowly attempting to gain Gi-hun’s trust and build a group of likeminded players. “I think it’s kind of fun because only the audience knows that it’s him so it’s more tense for them to watch him in the game, forming this alliance with Gi-hun,” Lee Jung-jae tells Variety . “I think all the viewers will be thinking about is when Gi-hun will finally realize that he is The Front Man, or what game he can go until without revealing his identity.” When Lee Byung-hun first met with “Squid Game” creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk to discuss possible directions for Season 2, they casually speculated over drinks about In-ho’s backstory. While Season 2 ultimately doesn’t show his past — choosing instead to give details through dialogue about In-ho’s late wife who died of illness when they were destitute — Lee Byung-hun kept thinking about how his character entered the Squid Game the first time he played and, like Gi-hun after him, won the competition, and how his spirit has changed since. “He’s really seen kind of the bottom pit of humanity and in the midst of the violence and desperation of Squid Game, his hope for humanity and the world has really dwindled,” Lee Byung-hun explains. “He has this very pessimistic view of the people in the world around him.” Another one of the returning “Squid Game” characters is detective Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), who teams up with Gi-hun at the beginning of Season 2 to try and find the Squid Game island again. Jun-ho made his way there in Season 1 searching for his missing brother, In-ho, later finding out that his brother has gone from a former competitor in the games to becoming The Front Man himself. Jun-ho was shot by his brother upon this revelation in Season 1 and barely survived falling off the cliffs of the Squid Game island. When he teams up with Gi-hun to try to get back to the island again and end the games in Season 2, he decides not to tell Gi-hun that The Front Man is his brother. Showing In-ho playing the games alongside Gi-hun, who still fights to believe in the best in people and humanity — despite the cruelty of the Squid Game — pits two opposing characters together. Lee Byung-hun was tasked to act out much of this subtly as In-ho (who watched Gi-hun from behind a mask in Season 1) studies Gi-hun through the various games while forming a bond with him and not letting his true thoughts out. Lee Byung-hun describes how “when [In-ho] meets Gi-hun, who is still trying to break down the system, who returns to the games to be able to change something, because he still has hope for humanity — I think In-ho really wants to break Gi-hun’s spirit, and that’s why you see him observing him throughout the games and very meticulously making a plan to dismantle a lot of what he is doing.” “Squid Game” Season 2 comes with a new set of violent games that test the alliances formed with a largely new cast of players. But it all starts off with the same “Red Light, Green Light” competition that kicked off the first season. While Lee Jung-jae says it was a difficult five-day shoot, he found it to be the most fun of the Season 2 games to film. Lee Jung-jae explains: “It’s very different because this time around, Gi-hun’s goal is to save as many people as possible. The ‘Red Light, Green Light’ game gave a big shock to fans in Season 1 but now, it has a totally different atmosphere.” Lee Byung-hun says that for In-ho, while he is participating in the games as Young-il, “you do find him almost momentarily enjoying the situation.” “And I think this is just a very small glimpse of his past self,” he added. The most challenging part of the season from an emotional standpoint for Lee Jung-jae was the rebellion scene in the Season 2 finale. In the final episode, Gi-hun watches his close friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), die at the hands of The Front Man , marking the end of any hope for the rising rebellion. The Front Man puts his mask back on out of sight, so Gi-hun does not know it is In-ho/Young-Il, who Gi-hun actually thinks has already been killed during this fight. Lee Byung-hun explains why In-ho makes the choice to kill Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun after going out of his way to save his life earlier during the bloody musical-chairs-esque Mingle game, where he killed another man with his bare hands to keep Jung-bae alive. “I would say that until the Mingle game, In-ho is still a participant or a member of this very tight-knit group with Jung-bae and Gi-hyun,” Lee Byung-hun said. “So despite the fact that he shows Jung-bae this very violent side of him by killing someone within the room, he still needs to maintain this air that he is one team with Gi-hun and Jung-bae. At the very end of Season 2, I really thought about, what is he feeling when he has to kill Jung-bae because at the end of the day, he’s still a human being, and he goes through the games together, and there has to be at least some kind of emotional bond that’s built between him and Gi-hun and Jung-bae. However, I do understand that him killing Jung-bae is a tool to be able to awaken Gi-hun to the reality of what is happening. And a conversation I had with director Hwang was, how does In-ho, or The Front Man, feel when he is killing Jung-bae? And I think it is a feeling of kind of bitterness, however, I think the way In-ho understands it is that he’s giving up something small for a bigger message to Gi-hun.” The Front Man’s actions (a betrayal that has yet to fully reveal itself to Gi-hun until he knows In-ho is the one behind the mask) sting even more as Gi-hun and his crew of friends come so close to pulling off the rebellion and escaping the games for good. “I think the finale did a good job maximizing the emotions for viewers so it feels like they are on an emotional roller coaster ride,” Lee Jung-jae says. “They’re left at the very peak.” Lee Byung-hun feels that In-ho’s betrayal confirms that “in the process of these really grueling and violent games, his feelings faded.” “Feelings of hope and joy are long gone in the In-ho you meet in Season 2,” he said. With “Squid Game” Season 2 only consisting of seven episodes versus the first season’s nine, and the major cliffhanger that the second-season story ends on, Lee Jung-jae isn’t sure how viewers will receive it. “Maybe they will curse us for stopping there at the finale,” he wonders with a laugh. While Season 2 leaves many questions unanswered, the installment was filmed back-to-back with the show’s third and final season, which is confirmed for a 2025 release. So fans won’t need to be cursing the team for too long before finding out how this showdown between Gi-hun and In-ho comes to an end. And it’s looking like it will be a very dark conclusion indeed, if In-ho has his way. “In-ho is a character that no longer has belief or hope in the outside world,” Lee Byung-hun said. “So it’s almost like he has nowhere to go, because that is not really a world that he feels like he’s a part of anymore. So it’s less so the fact that he wants to protect the world of Squid Game, it’s more so that he feels that it’s completely hopeless outside. All these people are going to die in a really kind of pathetic way anyway, so why not play the games, and why not give at least one person a new life and a sense of opportunity? Because he has this very pessimistic view of the world, he does feel like the world of Squid Game at least makes more sense than the world outside of it.”A new set of keys

Despite losing three straight games, the Bears' offense has found its groove with new head coach Thomas Moore calling the shots on offense. They have racked up 300 yards of offense in three straight games and were just a few plays away from wins over both the Vikings and Lions . The win-loss columns may not reflect it, but the Bears are trending in the right direction on the offensive side of the ball. A key piece of Chicago's offensive success in recent weeks has been D.J. Moore. He's a clear focal point in the new-look offense and saw a season-high 16 targets on Thanksgiving against Detroit. He's had at least 90 yards and a score in back-to-back games. Unfortunately, Moore may be unable to keep his hot streak going this week. He's been dealing with a quad injury that could keep him sidelined against the 49ers . Injury update on Bears' WR As recently as Thursday, it did not seem promising that Moore would be able to suit up on Sunday. He missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday but was thankfully able to return in a limited fashion to close out the week on Friday. Chicago has officially designated Moore as questionable for Sunday's game. #Bears Friday Injury Report pic.twitter.com/9dWnrBDYua Moore may be questionable, but he has expressed that he expects to play against the 49ers. Barring a setback leading up to the game, fans should expect to see Moore on the field this week. Bears' WR Depth Chart: Who is D.J. Moore's Backup? If Moore is a surprise inactive this week, the Bears' receiving room will take a hit, but they'll still be in good hands. Without Moore on the field, Caleb Williams will lean on veteran Keenan Allen and fellow rookie Rome Odunze. This duo would command a majority of the targets in Moore's absence. NFL journeyman DeAndre Carter would assume WR3 duties if Moore is unable to play. He has nine receptions and 72 yards for the Bears this season and would likely be an afterthought in the offense as the de facto WR3. WEEK 14 FANTASY FOOTBALL ROSTER MANAGEMENT Lessons Learned | Stock Watch | Sleepers | Busts | Start 'Em, Sit 'Em | Usage Report | Weather D.J. Moore fantasy outlook Week 14 The recent changes to the offense under Thomas Moore have worked wonders for D.J. Moore's fantasy value. He is getting a steady dose of targets at a variety of depths. Moore has finished as a top-10 receiver in consecutive weeks thanks to the new high-volume role he's taken on. Moore's fantasy value was wavering during the middle of the year, but he's a weekly fantasy starter in this version of the Chicago offense. He comes in as the WR18 in the Sporting News' WR rankings and fantasy managers should be thrilled to fire him up in lineups this week.
Nigerians across ethnic and religious divides, at home and in the diaspora, have nominated the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for the ‘Governor of the Year’ category in the ThisDay Awards 2024. This year’s edition of the yearly awards, organised by the ThisDay/Arise Group Board of Editors, and tagged ‘When the Going Gets Tough... the Tough Get Rewarded!’, will be held on January 22, 2025. According to the organisers, the ‘Governor of the Year Award’ goes to “That Governor who combines vision, passion, dedication and courage to make the lives of the people of his state better.” Leading the nomination of Obaseki as ‘Governor of the Year’ is the immediate past Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science and Technology in Edo State, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-isibor, who said, “In his eight years of leadership of Edo, Obaseki’s milestone achievements in education, healthcare, innovation, tourism, agriculture, pension, city planning, security, science, civil service and corporate governance are laudable footprints that will stand the test of time.” He said, “His landmark achievements in the creation of the Edo State Tier-3 Data Centre, which facilitated digital services management for government agencies, the deployment of Health Information Management System, Electronic Health Records and Telemedicine Services, helped to streamline healthcare delivery, improve patient management and extend healthcare access to rural communities.” Ifaluyi-isibor described Obaseki as a man of vision with passion for excellence and unequalled zeal to impact the lives of his people. The former Edo State commissioner said, “Obaseki’s eight years leadership in Edo was outstanding. He not only utilised his experiences in the private sector to the benefit of the state, he also ensured that no one was left behind during his tenure in office by providing key infrastructure that added great value to the lives of the people of the state.” Ifaluyi-isibor added he was not surprised at Obaseki’s achievements in office because of his track record of excellence, saying he found him fit for the ‘Governor of the Year’ award and urged him to continue to find other ways to make life better for his people. In nominating Obaseki for the award, an international journalist in the United Kingdom, Mayozi John, said, “Since 1999, Obaseki is the best governor Edo State has produced. In all ramifications, he stood out. In all sectors, his presence was felt and is still being felt, even by thousands of Nigerians in the diaspora.” John, who spoke to journalists on his visit to Nigeria for the Christmas holiday, said, “Across the streets of the United States, the UK and across Europe, many sing his (Obaseki) praises after they must have visited Nigeria and chance upon Edo State. “Many Nigerians plan to hold a solidarity protest for Obaseki in the United States as soon as Donald Trump is sworn in as President in January 2025.” He added, “Obaseki’s tenure as Edo governor will continue to inspire and serve as a reference point for future leaders of the state.” John said it would take an extraordinary human being like Obaseki to best his own records, adding that the extraordinary person has yet to arrive the scene. The digitisation and reforms of the pension management with the Edo State Pension Management System and an online pension portal are laudable projects that continue to attract local and global accolades. The Smart City Initiative and investments in fibre optic infrastructure enabled high-speed Internet access across the state, laying the foundation for further digital services and urban planning within the state. The EdoBEST programme helped to revolutionise primary and junior secondary education by integrating technology into teaching and learning processes. Other key categories in the award include ‘Titans of The Year’ for the men and women who, through their vision, action, guts and courage made a lasting impact on Nigeria, and ‘Man of the Year’ for the man who significantly influenced major events that defined the outgoing year, 2024. Nate Sydnor, executive director of the Piney Creek Watershed Association, said the project has been put out to bid, and the organization is waiting on a “notice to proceed” from the West Virginia Division of Highways, which is expected to take four weeks. The Woodrow Wetlands Project has been in the works since 2022 after the pond, where the wetland is now located, was drained to deter the goose population from continuing to take up residence. At the time, the school had received several citations from the health department due to the high levels of fecal bacteria found in the pond, courtesy of the geese, as well as all the geese droppings on the school campus that were carried into the school by foot traffic and then spread further throughout the school. Plans for the wetlands project include a boardwalk with two 80-foot walking ramps connected on either side of a 32-by-32-square-foot outdoor classroom, a wheelchair-accessible walking pavilion and additional flora and fauna around that area. Sydnor said initial bidders on the project had it costing upward of $200,000, but they were able to find a way to reduce those costs without compromising the project. “This issue with the original bids is that the pond filled back up, which caused some complications with construction,” Sydnor said. “So we excavated and drained that area and the new bids came in drastically lower.” Sydnor said the excavation was paid for by a $6,000 grant from the Carter Family Foundation. Sydnor explained that because the pond had refilled with water and sediment, contractors were unable to determine how deep the area was and were unable to plan accordingly, but that changed when the area drained and the ground became clearly visible. Fundraising efforts for the project have been led by two Woodrow Wilson students, Ram Asaithambi and Thomas Spencer, who’ve raised around $200,000 for the project since 2022. Sydor said the money raised by the students will be used as matching funds for a $117,500 grant from the West Virginia Division of Highways. Sydnor provided updates on the Woodrow Wetlands Project as well as other projects the Piney Creek Watershed Association is involved in at a Beckley Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26. During the meeting, council approved a $1 lease with the Piney Creek Watershed Association for the use of a space in a former fire station located at 213 S. Kanawha St. in Beckley. Beckley City Attorney Bill File said an existing city ordinance allows the city to lease property to nonprofits at reduced rates. File added that the city will be responsible for paying the utilities for the building. Sydnor said having office space in Beckley will allow the Piney Creek Watershed Association to more easily engage with partners like the city of Beckley, the Raleigh County Commission, the Beckley Raleigh County Health Department, the Beckley Sanitary Board and West Virginia University Institute of Technology. “Being able to have an office centrally located to all the partners will help us collaborate in a variety of ways,” Sydnor said. How to view your Valorant Flashback 2024 recap
Nobel Prize 2024 winners: Who are the winners in each of the categories and what was their contribution?Missing dog returned to family home and rang the doorbell WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Athena, a 4-year-old German Shepherd and Husky mix, escaped her home in Green Cove Springs, Florida, on Dec. 15, prompting a search among the community and nearby towns for her. Yet on Christmas Eve, Athena appeared at the family's front door ringing on their doorbell — ending a search after more than a week. Her owner, Brooke Comer, said Athena's escape brought multiple communities in her town and neighboring towns to search for her dog, and that Athena's escape was about a 20-mile roundtrip near the train tracks. Sinkhole in New Jersey keeps I-80 closed after a section collapses into an abandoned mine WHARTON, N.J. (AP) — Road crews are repairing Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey after a sinkhole from an abandoned mine shut down the eastbound lanes. The state’s transportation department says it remains unknown when those lanes will reopen. The hole opened up along the highway’s right shoulder Thursday morning, and the guardrail was still hanging suspended across the gaping 40-foot-wide hole on Friday. Drivers are currently having to detour near Wharton, about 40 miles west of New York City. The New Jersey Department of Transportation said crews will work around the clock to the repair the roadway. Customs agents seize 22,000 fake Pennsylvania vehicle inspection stickers shipped from Israel HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency says it seized more than 20,000 counterfeit Pennsylvania vehicle inspection stickers that were shipped from Israel to an address in Philadelphia. The agency said that customs officers found the stickers in two different shipments that arrived on different days, Nov. 26 and Dec. 9. The agency didn't say in a Thursday statement who sent the stickers, who was to receive them and what purpose the stickers were going to serve. The agency said it made no arrests. Pennsylvania requires that motor vehicles be inspected annually to ensure they meet minimum mechanical, safety and emissions standards. One owl rescued by a Minnesota woman is euthanized; efforts to save the other continue ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — One of the two owls rescued by a Minnesota woman in a story that went viral this week has died, but the other is still getting medical care. Wildwoods Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Duluth said in a Facebook post Thursday that the snowy owl rescued by Annabell Whelan had internal injuries, a broken wing and a broken leg, and had to be euthanized. The great gray owl also rescued by Whelan suffered broken bones and large soft tissue wounds. Wildwoods says the injuries are severe and veterinarians are doing everything they can to “give the bird a chance at recovery.” Whelan happened to find both injured owls at different places Monday. 2 Florida tourist spots halt drones in shows following a separate accident that injured a boy ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A theme park resort and a huge hotel in central Florida either have stopped using drones or canceled their drone-based shows after several drones collided and fell from the sky during a separate holiday celebration in downtown Orlando. The accident last weekend injured a boy who required surgery. Universal Orlando said this week that it was pausing the drone component of its “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular” show, while Orlando World Center Marriott posted that it was canceling its scheduled drone shows during the holiday week. The halt in using drones follows last Saturday’s accident at a holiday show at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. NASA's Parker Solar Probe survives close brush with the sun's scorching surface NEW YORK (AP) — NASA has confirmed that a spacecraft has made the closest approach to the sun. Earlier this week, the Parker Solar Probe passed within a mere 3.8 million miles of the sun. Space agency officials received an all-clear message Thursday night confirming Parker survived the journey. The spacecraft was launched in 2018 to get a close-up look at the sun. It'll continue circling the sun at this distance until at least September. Scientists hope to better understand what drives the solar wind and why the sun's outer atmosphere iis so much hotter than its surface. 'Morrison Hotel' made famous by The Doors goes up in flames in LA The former Morrison Hotel, which was famously on the cover of a 1970 album by The Doors, has been significantly damaged by a fire in downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Fire Department says the four-story building burned for nearly two hours Thursday. More than 100 firefighters helped bring the fire under control. The building had been vacant for more than a decade but several people who were inside at the time escaped without injuries. The Morrison Hotel was featured on the album’s cover that showed legendary frontman Jim Morrison in the middle. That album was viewed as a comeback for The Doors. Another jackpot surpasses $1 billion. Is this the new normal? Remember this moment because it probably won’t last: A U.S. lottery jackpot is projected to soar above $1 billion, and that's still a big deal. Friday’s Mega Millions drawing is worth an estimated $1.15 billion. The prize has evoked headlines across the country, despite the nation's top 10 jackpots already having boasted billion-dollar payouts. Jonathan Cohen is the author of the book “For a Dollar and a Dream: State Lotteries in Modern America.” He says he expects jackpots to continue to grow in size. Larger payouts attract more media attention, increase ticket sales and bring in new players. Suzuki Motor former boss Osamu Suzuki, who turned the minicar maker into a global player, dies at 94 TOKYO (AP) — Osamu Suzuki, the charismatic former boss of Japanese mini-vehicle maker Suzuki Motor Corp., has died. He was 94. It was the first Japanese automaker to start local production in India and has had tie-ups with industry leaders like General Motors and Volkswagen. It is working with Toyota on developing self-driving vehicles. The company said Suzuki died Wednesday of malignant lymphoma. Cowboys shutting down CeeDee Lamb with 2 games to go over receiver's shoulder issue FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder. The team says additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team says surgery isn't expected to be required. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention a few hours before last weekend’s 26-24 victory over Tampa Bay.CARSON, Calif. — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a whopping 18 goals in five games to win another crown. Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable charge through the playoffs ended one win shy of its first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS' playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy's crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched the game in a suit, but his teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their fans during the celebration. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward's outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy's striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA's penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy's usually shaky defense gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of traveling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough on MLS' biggest stage. The Galaxy's Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player also won it all with Toronto in 2017. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández rebuilt itself this season with lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and the Ghanaian Paintsil out of Belgium, and the duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS' best players. Puig stayed in last week's game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game's only goal. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

(AP) — Florida Atlantic is finalizing the hiring of Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley as its new head coach, a person with knowledge of the decision said Monday. Kittley and the school were working through the remaining details Monday, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has yet to announce that the hiring is complete. The Owls are replacing Tom Herman, who was fired two weeks ago with two games left in his second year at the school. Kittley had stints as offensive coordinator at Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky before returning to Texas Tech — his alma mater — in 2022 in the same role. The Red Raiders have averaged 435 yards per game over the last three seasons under Kittley, 22nd best among all FBS teams. This season saw the Red Raiders rank among the nation's best offenses: They were eighth in yards per play, eighth in points per game, 10th in yards per game and did all that at a pace nearly unmatched nationally. Texas Tech averaged 78.25 plays per game this season, just behind Syracuse's 78.33 for the national lead. As a student assistant, then graduate assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach at Texas Tech, Kittley helped coach Patrick Mahomes — the Kansas City Chiefs star, NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion — during his collegiate career. The Owls went 3-9 this season, their fourth consecutive losing record. Lane Kiffin went 27-13 with two bowl wins in his three seasons at FAU; the Owls are 22-35 in five seasons since Kiffin left for Ole Miss after the 2019 campaign. BancFirst Co. (NASDAQ:BANF) Plans $0.46 Quarterly DividendUS politicians on both sides have reacted to news that former US President Jimmy Carter, who as president brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, has died at age 100. or signup to continue reading Here are some of the immediate comments. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND FIRST LADY JILL BIDEN "Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what's extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well." US PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers." FORMER US PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON "From his commitment to civil rights as a state senator and governor of Georgia; to his efforts as President to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David; to his post-Presidential efforts at the Carter Centre supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn's devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity—he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world." US SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL "Elaine and I join the Senate and the nation in mourning the passing of our 39th president, Jimmy Carter." "President Carter served during times of tension and uncertainty, both at home and abroad. But his calm spirit and deep faith seemed unshakeable. Jimmy Carter served as our commander-in-chief for four years, but he served as the beloved, unassuming Sunday school teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia for forty. And his humble devotion leaves us little doubt which of those two important roles he prized the most." US HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON "Today, the thoughts of Americans and the prayers of Congress are lifted up on behalf of the Carter family. President Carter's story was one of humble beginnings, and his life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation. Because of his work in brokering the Camp David Accords and his advocacy with Habitat for Humanity, the world is a more peaceful place, and more Americans have a place to call home. No one can deny that President Carter led an extraordinary life of service to his country. May he rest in peace." US REPRESENTATIVE MIKE TURNER "I am deeply saddened to learn about the death of President Jimmy Carter. President Carter was a man of integrity who was guided by his faith. I join all Americans in saluting President Carter for his lifetime of service, first as a naval officer, then as a senator in the Georgia State Senate, then as Governor of Georgia, and, finally, as President of the United States. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the Carter family." US SENATOR MARK WARNER "President Carter will be remembered by what he built and left behind for us – a model of service late into life, a tireless devotion to family and philanthropy, and a more peaceful world to call home."
