( MENAFN - IANS) Kolkata, Dec 30 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be visiting Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on Monday -- a first since the sexual harassment controversy broke out earlier this year. Several local women had made allegations of sexual harassment and land grabbing by local Trinamool congress leader sheikh Shahjahan -- who has since been suspended by the party -- and his two aides, Shibu Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar. The Chief Minister on December 26 announced that she would be going there to attend an official programme on December 30 and hand over documents of public services to 100 beneficiaries there. On Monday, 20,000 individuals will be handed over such papers from different camps established there on that day," Banerjee said. Earlier, when the controversy broke out, doubts were raised from different quarters, including the opposition parties in the state, as to why the Chief Minister was avoiding a visit to Sandeshkhali. Political observers feel that the Chief Minister's visit to Sandeshkhali now is significant as she is expected to make important announcements there. On January 5, Sandeshkhali hit the headlines as a group of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and their escorting Central Armed Forces Personnel (CAPF) personnel were attacked after attempting a raid and search operations at the residence of Sheikh Shahjahan in connection with the multi-core ration distribution case in West Bengal. After that, the local people whose land was allegedly grabbed by Shahahjan and his associates and the women, who had become victims of sexual harassment by them, came out on the streets protesting the issue. The Trinamool then said the allegations of sexual harassment were politically motivated and meant to defame the party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The BJP, however, claimed the allegations were an example of the Trinamool misrule and exploitation of women. In the Lok Sabha election, the Trinamool Congress won the Basirhat seat, within which the Sandeshkhali Assembly constituency is located. Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29 after he managed to evade the police for around two months. Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari has announced that he would hold a 'Jana Sanjog Yatra' in the area a day after the Chief Minister's visit. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is to receive $728.1 million to upgrade its core digital systems over the next five years. The funding, revealed in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) budget update [pdf], will "enhance energy security and reliability" for the national electricity operator. AEMO, which is 60 percent government-owned, mentioned its uplift of "operational digital systems" and ongoing work to "strengthen AEMO's cyber security posture" in its FY24 annual results [pdf]. The operator, which also oversees retail and wholesale gas markets in south-eastern Australia, has been contacted for more details about its digital transformation plans. Meanwhile, the MYEFO will also see the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) gain $110.4 million over two years from 2024–25 to boost fraud-detecting information technology systems. This will be in addition to the $83.9 million revealed earlier this year for the systems which fall under the 'Crack Down on Fraud'...

Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.Thames Water: Navigating Economic Rapids

Ohio State AD: Ryan Day ‘absolutely’ back in 2025The speculation can finally end . Universal took to social media Monday to give film fans everywhere a present: the first official description of Christopher Nolan’s next movie . It’s called The Odyssey which, yes, is an adaptation of Homer’s poem. “Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026,” the statement read. Written by Homer centuries before the birth of Christ, The Odyssey is the follow-up to The Illiad. It follows Odysseus, a Greek hero who travels home after the Trojan War. A sprawling adventure featuring mythical creatures, battles, and more, it’s a story that has been adapted in seemingly every medium in seemingly every era. But, coming from Nolan, you can be sure this will be the biggest, most faithful, and massive adaptation yet. Plus, it’s a far cry from previous rumors about the film, such as it being about helicopter cops or the one reported on by this website which was it was a period film about vampires. Hey, at least it is a period film. Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o star though there’s no word on who is playing who. But let’s speculate a bit. We’re thinking—and this is totally from my io9 colleague Sabina Graves—that it would make sense to see Matt Damon as Odysseus, Holland as his son Telemachus, Hathaway as Penelope, Theron as Athena, Pattinson as Poseidon (or the Cyclops), Nyong’o as Circe ,and Zendaya as Calypso. But, again, pure speculation. And what’s the “brand new IMAX film technology” the studio is touting? Sounds exciting. But not as exciting as Nolan going for the biggest story of his entire career, and maybe his second Oscar. The Odyssey , directed by Christopher Nolans, opens July 17, 2026.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, says the Government is positioning Jamaica as a regional hub for technology and innovation as part of the economic growth strategy. The Minister, in a speech delivered by Permanent Secretary, Sancia Bennett Templer, during the Global Services Association of Jamaica (GSAJ) President’s Breakfast Forum at the Grand-a-View Restaurant and Event Place in Montego Bay on Thursday (November 22), said the Government has been providing incentives to encourage innovation and digital transformation, fostering an environment that is conducive to high-quality research and development in digital technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). “We have also been engaging in public-private collaborations that intentionally stimulate innovation. This forms part of a broader strategy to further develop and expand high-potential outsourcing sectors, which are critical for the country’s digital transformation and global competitiveness,” he added. Senator Hill said the Administration is not shying away from AI as an emerging technology, pointing out that a National AI Task Force was established last year to provide an evidence-based foundation for the development of an AI policy framework. The policy, he noted, is expected to leverage “this emerging technology” to improve productivity, while ensuring safe applications and data security. “AI is expected to be integrated into sectors, like health, agriculture and education and, of course, Global Digital Services (GDSS), to enhance productivity. “By actively supporting the development of technology-driven industries, we are enabling the creation of high-paying, knowledge-based jobs by attracting foreign direct investment and retaining local talent. These efforts will also further position Jamaica as a regional hub for innovation, driving economic diversification and resilience,” he said. Senator Hill said with these strategic initiatives, Jamaica is not just participating in the digital revolution, but “we are leading it” and transforming challenges into opportunities for sustainable development. Meanwhile, he encouraged businesses involved in the GDSS sector to take advantage of benefits available through the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) regime. The Government provides incentives to encourage business growth in firms operating in the SEZs, including those involved in outsourcing operations, the Minister said, noting that entities can benefit from a 50 per cent reduction in their corporate income tax rate. He pointed out that in the domestic economy, companies pay 25 per cent to 33 1/3 per cent corporate income tax, while the SEZ companies pay as low as 12.55 per cent, which can be further reduced to 7.75 per cent with the application of promotional and employee tax credits.
