ROME -- The U.S. special envoy for Sudan said Thursday, just days after his first visit to the war-wrecked country since taking his post, that he doesn't see enough of “political appetite” from the warring parties to reach a resolution to the conflict. The African nation plunged into conflict in mid-April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary leaders broke out in the capital of Khartoum and spread to other regions, including western Darfur. The fighting has left tens of thousands of dead, forced millions from their homes, and pushed a large swath of the population to starvation. Tom Perriello, who was appointed as special envoy in February, travelled to Port Sudan on Monday to meet with Sudanese officials, including the head of the military Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, whose troops have been battling the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces around the country for the past 19 months. Multiple attempts to broker a cease-fire have fallen apart , most recently in August, when the Sudanese military refused to attend U.S.-mediated talks in Geneva . Since then, fighting has only accelerated, and RSF forces have been accused by the United Nations of carrying out atrocities including killings of civilians and rapes in several parts of the country. “We do not yet see enough political appetite from the parties to find a real resolution to this conflict,” Perriello said in an interview with The Associated Press in Rome. He said any solution “has got to be about handing control back to the people.” Sudan had been trying to establish a civilian government after a popular uprising forced the removal of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The short-lived transition to democracy was derailed when Burhan and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the RSF, joined forces to carry out a military takeover in 2021. But Burhan and Dagalo soon fell out, and their long-simmering struggle for control erupted into battles in Khartoum in April 2023 and spread the other parts of the country. Some 14 million people — 30% of the population — have been forcibly displaced, either to other parts of the country or abroad in what the U.N. says is one of the world's worst displacement crises. During his visit, Perriello met with members of Sudanese civil society and humanitarian aid workers in an effort to improve movement of food and medicines to people across the country. He said the United States is working to stop countries that are arming the warring parties despite a U.N. arms embargo. Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council, led by Burhan, accuses the United Arab Emirates, a U.S. ally, of arming the RSF — a charge that a U.N. panel of experts said was credible, though the UAE denies it. The RSF has also reportedly received support from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group. “We won’t speak to specific conversations, but the United States has been very clear with countries all over the world that we believe it’s time to stop fueling this war with more weapons,” Perriello said. Burhan has received Russian support and is a close ally of neighboring Egypt and its president, former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Health and diet expert Professor Tim Spector says doing one thing for 10 minutes before cooking could slash cholesterol and, in turn, the risk of heart disease. Prof Spector, who co-founded the ZOE diet app and rose to prominence during the Covid pandemic, said if you're using chopped onion and garlic, you should let it rest for 10 minutes before cooking it. He said this boosted levels of a chemical that helps to reduce cholesterol. Speaking to The i , he said the move also helped to stabilise blood sugar. The tip came part of Prof Spector's advice for 2025 when it comes to diet. He said: "Onion and garlic, as well as cabbage and broccoli, are good sources of sulforaphane, a chemical that has been shown to improve glucose control and cholesterol levels." The expert said that cooking destroyed an enzyme called mirosinase, which is where sulforaphane comes from. However, letting vegetables sit for between five and 10 mins before cooking them means that the sulforaphane is "activated" and is then not destroyed by cooking. Prof Spector had another tip for meal planning as well, saying: "There is emerging evidence that eating salads or other vegetables as starters ten minutes or so before you have a carbohydrate-rich meal can help to keep you fuller for longer and reduce blood sugar spikes from the starchy food." The diet guru also said Brits should get more fermented foods into their diets, such as kimchi. He also said vinegar was good in salad dressings, as its acidity helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, which helps to keep you feeling full between meals and therefore avoid snacking. Gold sales were from gold recovery on the Sleeping Giant property and the residual from the 5,000 tonne bulk sample from the Courville property (Pershing Manitou). During the quarter, the Corporation carried out stripping work on the Flordin property in the Cartwright area. Stripping work on 3 zones exposed the high-grade gold mineralized zone, and subsequently over 200 metres in distance, during a second round of stripping at the end of the quarter, and channel sampling of the newly exposed mineralized zone. The work completed during the quarter, and the results obtained from drilling in November 2023, support the Corporation's assumption that the high-grade gold mineralization associated with pyrite bands would be continuous over more than 2 km between the Cartwright deposit and the South Zone discovered by Cambior in 1988. On June 17, 2024, the Corporation entered into an option agreement with Québec Lafleur Minerals Inc. ("LaFleur") under which Abcourt granted LaFleur the right to acquire a 100% interest in 141 mining claims held by the Corporation and covering approximately 5,579 hectares. The optioned property includes portions of the Courville and Abcourt Barvue projects, namely the Jolin (Courville) and Bartec (Abcourt-Barvue) sectors and contiguous to the Swanson property. Kolhapur/Mumbai: Days after Markadwadi villagers' bid to conduct a mock poll with ballot papers was foiled by the Solapur district administration, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday urged villagers in the Malshiras assembly constituency to pass a resolution calling for elections to be held using ballot papers. "The villagers in Malshiras constituency should pass the resolution. I will take it to state govt, Centre and EC. I will also request the CM to visit Markadwadi. If he finds their concerns valid, he should take the necessary steps. We don't want to bring politics into it. As soon as Parliament session resumes, we will raise Markadwadi villagers' concerns there as well," he said during a visit to the village. He also criticised the district administration for preventing the villagers from holding the mock voting. NCP (SP) candidate Uttam Jankar won Malshiras seat but with a narrow margin against BJP's Ram Satpute. Jankar has since announced that he would resign to pave the way for a byelection with ballot papers. Pawar said people have started raising doubts about the election process , and some recent election results suggested that these concerns might be justified. "We need to consider what practices are followed elsewhere in the world. In US and UK, EVMs are not used today," he said.
