Gene Simmons still considers rock music to be "dead". The KISS legend, 75, continues to profess that no one has come close to the likes of Elvis Presley The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd. Appearing on 'The Zak Kuhn Show', Simmons was asked if rock is "still dead", to which he replied: "It is. And people don't understand how I can say that when we all have our favourite songs and we love our favourite bands - you and I and everybody else. "But what I mean is that ... Well, let's play a game, and I've done this before. From 1958 until 1988, that's 30 years. 30 years. So what came during that period? Well, we had Elvis, we had The Beatles, The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, all that, Pink Floyd, the solo artists, "David Bowie and just music that lasts forever, we'd like to think. In the disco world, you had Madonna, more heavy guitars, you had - Oh, God - AC/DC and everybody else, Aerosmith and on and on. And you had Motown at the same time. You had Prince. It was a very, very rich musical menu. It could go up and down. You had prog bands, you had Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and you had the heavy bands, Led Zeppelin and so on. And from 1988 until today, it's something like almost 40 years, certainly 35 years. Who are the new Beatles?" Host Kuhn then suggested grunge pioneers Nirvana, but Simmons insisted most young adults wouldn't be able to name any of the other members of the Smells Like Teen Spirit group – except perhaps late frontman Kurt Cobain and drummer Dave Grohl. He reacted: "Stop. We are blinded. I'm a major fan. If you walked down the street and asked a 20-year-old, 'Who's the bass player in Nirvana?', they wouldn't know what you're talking about. Or, 'Can you sing a Nirvana song?' No, no. The Beatles and, to slightly lesser extent, The Stones and Elvis, everybody knew The Beatles If you hated rock music, you knew about them." Simmons blamed it on a "generation gap" and recalled his son Nick being in his early 20s and talking to a girl wearing a Stones T-shirt and her having no clue who the legendary rock 'n' roll band are. The Rock And Roll All Nite rocker also quipped that he is "delusional enough" to believe KISS are "the most recognised faces on the planet". Simmons insisted fame has a lot to do with the success of rock stars and that the likes of Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl are "more popular" because they engage in media appearances. He added: "Not everybody loves Jesus either. That's not the point. Fame itself is the ultimate reward."All this is made possible by LLCB technology (Large-Footprint Lithium Ceramic Battery). With its anode of 100 per cent silicon this battery offers a 10-times higher capacity density compared to graphite anodes used today. Depending on the vehicle segment and intended use, the LLCB saves up to 300 kg or allows a maximum range of 1,000 km. The applied solid-state electrolyte is non-flammable and increases safety against thermal runaway. It also prevents potential short circuits caused by leaking electrolyte fluid in the event of a spill. “For the LLCB solution, we have successfully combined ProLogium ́s know-how in the field of cell development with our development, system and testing expertise,” said Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Global Vice President Electric Powertrain at FEV. “Our collaboration on battery packs and concept designs focuses not only on regulatory standards, but also on market requirements. We even exceed these.” The anode also enables ultra-fast charging, charging the battery from five to 60 per cent within five minutes. This allows the user an average range of 300 km. After further three minutes, the battery is charged to 80 per cent and can cover additional 100 km. In this way, the LLCB helps to bring charging times closer to the duration of a refueling process for vehicles with combustion engines. At the Paris Motor Show 2024, FEV and ProLogium announced to continue their joint efforts for LLCB development in the future. René Bennett | (TNS) Bankrate.com If you’re an iPhone user, you might not realize that you already have access to Apple Cash. It’s a digital cash card that’s built into Apple devices and can be found in the default Wallet app. (Note: You must link an eligible debit card to use this service.) The main function of Apple Cash is to make it easier for Apple device users to send money to one another, including sending money through the iMessage app. But Apple Cash is more than just a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment service — it can be used to shop online, in stores or to make in-app purchases. Apple Cash is a convenient way to transfer money between friends and family. Once it’s set up, a user can simply open the iMessage app and send money to a contact through their chat. It’s also useful for those who use Apple Pay, a separate service that allows Apple device users to make contactless payments with any linked card, including an Apple Cash card. Here are some important things to know about setting up and using Apple Cash. How Apple Cash works Apple Cash is a digital cash card that’s stored in the Wallet app of Apple devices, and it can be used for making P2P payments, as well as purchases through Apple Pay. When you receive money from another Apple Cash user, that money appears in your Apple Cash balance. The balance can then be spent or transferred to a linked bank account or debit card. Sending money to peers with Apple Cash can be done either directly from the digital Apple Cash card (in the Wallet app) or through the iMessage app. You can send or receive anywhere between $1 and $10,000 per message. The money shows up on the recipient’s Apple Cash card instantly, but it may take from one to three days for the balance to be transferred to a bank account. Instant transfers to a bank account are possible, but it comes with a 1.5% fee. There’s also an option to set up Apple Cash Family for children who are under 18 years old. This option limits the amount a child can send to $2,000 per message. Those younger than 18 also cannot add money to their Apple Cash card from a bank account; rather, their balance only grows when they receive money from another Apple Cash user. Difference between Apple Cash and Apple Pay Apple Cash is a digital card within your Wallet that allows you to spend your Apple Cash online, in stores and in apps as well send and receive money. Apple Pay, however, allows you to make purchases using any credit card or debit card you have stored in your Wallet — including Apple Cash. With Apple Pay, you add credit and debit cards to your Wallet and then have the ability to pay right with your phone (or other Apple product). How to use Apple Cash 1. Set up Apple Cash with a compatible device To set up Apple Cash, you’ll need three things: —A compatible Apple device. —Two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple ID (this can be done in Settings). —An eligible debit card to load funds onto the Apple Cash card. In the Settings app, you can turn on Apple Cash in the Wallet and Apple Pay section. Tap on the Apple Cash card icon and follow the instructions on the screen. You’ll be asked to agree to the terms and conditions, after which your device will set up Apple Cash for you. The Apple Cash card, once set up, can be found in your device’s Wallet app. If you want to set up Apple Cash Family, you’ll first need to have Family Sharing turned on, which can be done in Settings. The family organizer can add children to Apple Cash in the Family Sharing section of Settings. 2. Add money to your card You’ll need to have a debit card linked to your digital Wallet to add money to an Apple Cash card. You can add a debit card to Wallet in the same place where you set up Apple Cash — the Wallet and Apple Pay section of Settings. Once a debit card is linked to your Wallet, open Wallet and tap on the Apple Cash card. Then, tap the More button (an icon with three dots). This will open a page where you can see your Apple Cash balance, add money and transfer funds to a bank account. Tap Add Money and enter the amount you’d like to add (the minimum is $10). You’ll be asked to confirm which debit card you want to use to fund the Apple Cash balance, and then the money is added to the Apple Cash card. 3. Send a payment There are two ways to send a payment to someone using Apple Cash: directly from your Wallet or in the iMessage app. Both the sender and recipient need Apple Cash to send or receive money. From your Apple Wallet To send money from Wallet, simply tap the Apple Cash card in Wallet and then tap Send. Type in the contact name or phone number of the recipient. Enter the amount you’d like to send (between $1 and $10,000), then review the payment and confirm it with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. Via iMessages In iMessage, open the conversation with who you’d like to send money to, or start a new one. Tap on the app button, which appears next to the type bar, and then tap on the Apple Cash icon. You’ll be prompted to enter an amount (between $1 and $10,000). Once you’ve reviewed the amount, tap Send and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. The first time money is sent to someone, the recipient will need to accept the payment within seven days for it to go through. After the first instance, payments are automatically accepted. If you’re using Apple Cash to make a purchase either online or in a store, you’ll need to pay using Apple Pay. 4. Request money To request money from your iPhone, open the conversation in the Messages app. Tap the plus icon, followed by Apple Cash. Then, tap Request. Tap the send button to send your payment request. Once the request is sent, the person you sent it to can confirm or change the amount they send to you. You can also request money from your Apple watch. Open your messages app, choose a conversation, tap the plus icon and then choose Apple Cash. Once you enter the amount you are requesting, swipe left on the Send button. Tap Request. 5. Transfer your balance to a bank account As you start to accumulate money on the Apple Cash card, you may want to move it to a debit card or a bank account . This can be done by going to the same place where you added funds to the card, by clicking the icon with three dots next to your digital card. You’ll be asked whether you want to do an instant transfer (for a 1.5% fee) or a transfer in one to three business days for free. After making a selection, the screen will instruct you to set up a bank account if you don’t already have one set up. You’ll confirm the payment, and the transfer is initiated. Instant transfers can only be made to an eligible debit card, not a bank account. Money is sent within 30 minutes when you select instant transfer. Alternatives to Apple Cash —Zelle: If your bank is offers Zelle, it might be a good idea to take advantage of the P2P payment service. Zelle can be accessed directly from your bank’s mobile app, and it allows you to send instant transfers at no extra cost. —Venmo: Anyone can use Venmo, as long as they’ve downloaded the app. Unlike Apple Cash or Zelle, it’s a standalone P2P payment app. Venmo comes with a social element — users can follow each other and add fun emojis to their payments, although they can also keep their account activity private. —PayPal: This P2P payment service is a good option if you want to send money internationally. It also offers a PayPal Debit card, which, like the Apple Cash card, can be used to make purchases online or in stores. —Samsung Pay Cash: Samsung device users can use this option instead of Apple Cash. Similar to Apple Cash, it is a digital wallet that you can access from a Samsung mobile device. However, to take full advantage of Samsung Pay Cash, users will need to undergo an extra registration process to upgrade to a Full Card Account. Bottom line Apple Cash makes it easy for Apple device users to send money to each other. Users can simply tap the Apple Cash icon in their text messages to send money through iMessage. It can also be used as an extra repository for spending money and can be used for purchases anywhere Apple Pay is accepted. With that said, only Apple device users can send and receive money using Apple Cash, so those looking for a more universal payment service may want to consider other P2P payment apps . ©2024 Bankrate.com. MAYVILLE, N.D. — It’s been a little more than three months since Lexi Whitehorn became the full-time director of the Mayville Public Library. Already, she has implemented programs and improvements to an entity that has been run by volunteers following the death of the previous director. Whitehorn said she still has volunteers who sign up each month to help out with activities and work to keep the state’s first public library up and running. ADVERTISEMENT “We have about 20 to 25 pretty active volunteers,” she said. “What happens is, I send out a sign-up at the beginning of the month for different activities that we have, or different things that I need help with, and then they sign up. That’s how we’ve been running it since August.” Whitehorn became the new director on Aug. 21. One of the volunteers, Cheryl Angen, had started in March, helping to keep the place going after the death of Margaret Rice, the previous director, at the beginning of the year. Angen said some of the volunteer work includes helping out at the front desk, putting books into the library’s system, reading to children who come in from the local day care and school, and filling in anywhere help is needed. Angen said Whitehorn has added a lot of activities and new books to the library. She has set up adult and child craft nights and brought in graphic novels. She organized a free day care from 2 to 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month when school gets out early, escape rooms for kids, and more. “The changes have been phenomenal,” she said. “Lexi has just done so much.” Angen became a volunteer following her retirement from Mayville State University’s bookstore last December, she said. She had worked at the store for 28 years and, about a month or two later, said she became bored. With an interest in books and a degree in elementary and early childhood education, she decided to join the effort. “This was the perfect niche,” she said. “We have preschoolers that come and toddlers that come in and elementary kids come. It was just a really fun way for me to get involved with young children again. ... (We) didn’t have nearly the activities that Lexi has now.” Whitehorn moved to Mayville from Bismarck and heard about the position being open. She previously worked for the North Dakota State Library, and has a master’s degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in English education. She always loved books and thought the position would be good to get back into education. ADVERTISEMENT There’s more in store for the library, Whitehorn said, including more digitization of the card catalog and updating technology and online resources; a visit by North Dakota writer Jill Kandell, author of “The Clean Daughter: A Cross-Continental Memoir” on Dec. 5; setting up a documentary night through Canopy, a new resource for the library, where people can watch the documentary and talk about it afterward; a financial literacy class; a presentation on pocket prairies; and two interns coming from Mayville State University. There are also upcoming December festivities, after which Whitehorn said she’ll be taking a break in January to plan the summer reading program. The library’s 125th anniversary also is approaching, and Whitehorn said she’d like to bring more focus to the library’s history. Open Monday to Friday, she said people are invited to stop in. “We love having people stop by, even if it’s just to look at the building,” she said. Angen added: “I just hope that people realize what a treasure this building is and what a gift it is to our community to have. And I’ll do whatever I can to keep it going with Lexi.”

Come winters, people generally tend to feel the shivers and their tempers subside a bit as well. Summers are seething and people’s moods are often inflammable. Yet, here are some who are perennial shouters, while others are born to be calm. Circumstances make us what we are, of course. Company matters. So do the vibes that surround us. A huge amount of will power is needed to stay upbeat when the going gets rough or when one is surrounded by perpetrators of diatribe! Some people evolve and others devolve, of course. Various knocks and jolts make the latter cynical and prone to venting out their angst often. A Hollywood actor has subtitled her Instagram account as “old hag” and since she looks anything but old or like a hag, she definitely means it in the wicked sense. Becoming wicked and caustic by nature is not a choice that is easily made. But it is ultimately a decision taken by a potentially balanced human being, who could have chosen to be otherwise, no matter what the circumstances. There are millions who have made the opposite choice. To remain civil and amiable despite grave challenges and even dastardly conditions. Mother Teresa once went to a hutment colony where the poorest of the poor subsisted. She was handing over small bags of rice to them. One truly impoverished lady expressed her extreme gratefulness upon receiving the said offering from the messiah. But Mother Teresa was bowled over by the lady’s next few words. “I will hand over half the rice to my friend in another colony. Her family needs it even more than mine!” The poor and needy cannot afford to be rude. They are often heartbroken but never harsh, unless circumstances are beyond their control. Rudeness is the exclusive prerogative of the high and mighty. A rather well-off family was to travel by a flight and the airline announced a delay due to weather conditions. The poor airline representative at the airport had to face the brunt of boorish behaviour from the said pompous family. And to make matters worse, most of the other passengers started misbehaving with the little lady as well. Security had to be called in, and neutral onlookers were pleased to see that the security incharge gave such a scolding to the head of the said family that he quickly forgot his pomposity thereafter! Our conduct is a matter of choice. It is we who decide how we are to behave on a given day. Some people are mercurial while others are consistent. Our moodiness often gets the better of us and we succumb. We might then speak with a certain lack of finesse or to put it bluntly, with acerbic iciness that surpasses all acceptable norms, particularly if we “lose it” in public. A study on rudeness at work places, led by Binyamin Cooper of Carnegie Melon University, states this: “While small insults and other forms of rude behaviour might seem relatively harmless compared to more serious forms of aggression, our findings suggest that they can have serious consequences.” It is a matter of fact that one caustic word uttered by a boss, a teacher or a parent, in unbridled anger, might harm the recipient’s psyche for a long time to come. Those in positions of power in society are meant to be even more responsible than others for each little fragment of their conduct. If they are unable to rein in their tendency to lose control, they are sure to cause much more harm than good in whatever capacity they are operating. A wise man once said, “Words once spoken cannot be recalled!” There is also a saying in a lighter vein that advises people to sort out small arguments through fisticuffs instead of hurting other people with deeper wounds through venomous words! Not to be taken seriously of course. The impatient nature of life itself in this era means that many people are short-fused anyway. Social media has exacerbated rudeness. We must focus on physical fitness, creative pursuits, and meditation in order to calm our minds. The rudeness index hasn’t been invented yet. Let’s hope it never sees the light of day! vivek.atray@gmail.comCabinet ministers have privately warned that moves to legalise assisted dying will eclipse the government’s priorities and heap pressure on the country’s most broken public services — the justice system and the NHS. Sir Keir Starmer will use a speech on Thursday to unveil concrete targets, including on waiting lists. But members of his top team fear plans to introduce assisted dying services will distract from these “milestones” and have an impact on both hospitals and the overstretched courts. There are also concerns about the lack of preparedness for such a seismic change in the law, with some blaming Simon Case, the cabinet secretary, for blocking work on the issue before the second reading of the assisted dying bill on Friday. It is understood this
