Bears general manager Ryan Poles was granted a reprieve complete with a second swing at hiring a head coach in Chicago. Poles will interview candidates and select a replacement for Matt Eberflus, who was fired Friday after the Bears' sixth consecutive loss and fourth of the season decided on a final play. "Ryan Poles is the general manager of the Chicago Bears, and he will remain the general manager of the Chicago Bears," president and CEO Kevin Warren said Monday. "Ryan will serve as the point person of our upcoming search for a head football coach. We will closely, we will work together on a daily basis to make sure we have the right person as our head football coach." Warren said the McCaskey family provided "all the resources" to build a championship environment. He confirmed that Thomas Brown, who a month ago was passing game coordinator before replacing Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach and shift from the press box to the sideline starting this week. Warren did not say whether Brown would automatically receive an interview for the full-time coaching position, which he said "will be the most coveted head coaching job in the National Football League." Poles said consideration will be given to candidates with the plan to develop rookie No. 1 pick Caleb Williams, but there are no set plans to involve the quarterback in the interview process. He said the Bears showed great progress through two seasons but couldn't sustain growth. "At the end of the day, we just came up short too many times," Poles said of firing Eberflus, his pick to be the Bears' head coach in January 2022. Brown promoted wide receivers coach Chris Beatty to interim offensive coordinator on Monday and announced that defensive coordinator Eric Washington will be the defensive play caller, a role Eberflus previously held. Trailing 23-20 on Thanksgiving Day, the Bears were within field-goal range when quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked. With 32 seconds remaining, Eberflus elected not to use his final timeout as Williams heaved an incompletion down the right sideline as time expired. "When you look at the end-of-the-game situations, detailing to finish in some of those moments. We all know a lot of games come down to those critical moments where we weren't able to get over the hump," Poles said. Eberflus said after the game that everything was handled properly and held a press conference via Zoom on Friday voicing confidence he'd have the team ready to play the 49ers this week. But three hours later, he was fired. Warren admitted the franchise could've handled the timing better, but clarified there was no decision on Eberflus' status at the time of his media session. "The decision was made to terminate the employment of head coach Matt Eberflus," Warren said 72 hours later. "We try to do everything in a professional manner. That decision was made on Friday." "Coach Eberflus had his press conference, we had not made a final decision. I think you know me, you know Ryan you know George McCaskey. One thing we stand for is family, integrity, doing it the right way. In retrospect, could we have done it better? Absolutely." Eberflus, 54, went 14-32 in two-plus seasons. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nov 23 (PTI) Shiv Sena nominee Hikmat Udhan defeated former Maharashtra minister and incumbent NCP (SP) MLA Rajesh Tope by a margin of 2,309 votes from the Ghansawangi seat in the assembly polls, results of which were declared on Saturday. Notably, Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, which became the epicentre of the Maratha quota agitation led by Majoj Jarange, is part of the Ghansawangi seat. Hikmat Udhan had joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena after quitting the Shiv Sena (UBT) ahead of the elections. Rajesh Tope had won the Ghansawangi constituency in the 2009, 2014 and 2019 assembly elections. Udhan polled 98,496 votes while Tope's tally stood at 96,187 votes. Independent candidate Satish Ghadage bagged 23,696 votes while VBA nominee Kaveri Khatke polled 20731 votes. Political experts observed that the consolidation of OBC votes in favour of the Mahayuti coalition could have negated the potential impact of the Maratha caste equation seen in the region in Lok Sabha polls held earlier this year. LAGOS – The federal government, on Tuesday in Lagos, disclosed that ongoing efforts and activities of partner agencies to reduce the Out-Of-School-Children in Nigeria has impacted a total of two million beneficiaries. Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Honorable Minister Of Education, disclosed this at the opening ceremonies of the ongoing three-day summit of the Basic Education In Nigeria Bootcamp (Ben-B) summit held in Lagos with the theme: “Improving Access to Inclusive Quality Education for All Children in Nigeria: Addressing the Challenges of Out-of-School Children”. The Minister in his message delivered by Dr (Mrs) Folake Olatunji-David, Director of Basic Education in the Federal Ministry of Education said the implementation of policies through the activities of four of its agencies and bilateral development partners supported by the take-off of the Almajiri and Out-of-School Commission is making positive impacts as part of the system-wide policy with a huge impact on Out-of-School Children. He said, “The Federal Ministry of Education is set for and indeed has commenced the implementation of key policies distilled with system-wide outcomes and their deep practical effects in the life of this Administration.” He said the policies captured by the Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teacher Training & Development, and Skills Development and Acquisition (DOTS) when implemented, will succeed in connecting the dots for the improvement of the overall education system in Nigeria. Emphasising the importance of data at the summit organised by the Federal Ministry of Education (FMoE), the Minister lamented the uncoordinated data repository in the country, saying unverifiable data has resulted in the citing of different figures for Out-Of-School-Children by governments and various bilateral partners. He acknowledged the place of quality teachers as pivotal in achieving policies on quality education and skilling, saying extant policies on teacher’s welfare, support and development would be reviewed for a more effective implementation. He added, “As we strive to ensure unfettered access to nine (9) years of formal basic education, we recognize the importance of free, Universal Basic Education for every Nigerian child of school-going age. Our collective efforts aim to reduce drastically the incidence of drop-out from the formal school system, through improved relevance, quality and efficiency.” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a keynote address, said the place of education at all levels of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu will create a befitting future for children and, in effect, have a positive impact on the nation’s social, economic, technology and political advancement. The Governor, represented by Hon. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner For Primary and Basic Education, said the outcomes will include sustainable plans, policies, and regulations that are visible, accessible, practical-oriented and cost-effective. He stressed the commitment of the state government to education and technology as one of the core THEME+ agenda of Lagos State, saying it has created and leveraged better education performance with a technology-driven approach. “The state had committed more resources in the establishment of new schools, skills acquisition centres, continuous rehabilitation of schools, restructuring of school plants, recruitment of professionally qualified teachers, provision of teaching materials, deployment of technology, teachers’ capacity building and motivation across the board. “In Lagos State, we have come up with various strategies to combat out-of-school children through aggressive enrollment drives and project zero, which reduces learning poverty and equally returning children found on the street to school,” he said. He urged stakeholders in the education sector to change the current approaches to build a world where every child survives, thrives, and has the power to shape their future. Prof Pai Obanya of the Institute of Education at the University of Ibadan (UI), the lead paper presenter, urged stakeholders to change the current notion about the profession, saying “Teaching is not as simply telling, but mainly as guiding, continuous assessment in place of continual testing, support tools from local and other sources,” he advocated. Delivering a paper titled: “Improving Access to Inclusive Quality Education for all Children in Nigeria: Addressing the Challenge of Out-Of-School-Children”, Prof Obanya called for disaggregated data and enhanced inter-agency synergy, the institution of systematic monitoring and targeted funding as part of measures to put the nation’s education back on track and tackle the Out-Of-School-Children menace. He urged the managers of the education sector to revisit and be guided by the implementation guidelines on Universal Basic Education (UBE),1999, UBE Roadmap, 2015 and the National Teacher Education Policy to reset the sector for sustainable growth amd development. Purpose Of the Summit Dr. Olatunji-David, represented by Mrs Joy Onoja, Director, Public asic Education Education said the main objectives of the Bootcamp are to: Assemble Basic Education stakeholders to deliberate on Policy, practice and implementation gaps facing the sub-sector. Ensure responsiveness of state ministries of Education (SMoEs) in compliance with National Education Policy decisions and programmes. Harmonize and coordinate resources and activities in the Basic Education sub-sector towards the achievement of national goals and aspirations. Monitor the progress of states and ensure reporting to the Federal Ministry of Education for proper coordination. The summit will review the implementation status, that is assess the extent to which recommendations have been implemented, identify best practices, share successful strategies and experience, address implementation gaps, refine strategies, foster collaboration, inform policy decisions, monitor progress and identify resource gaps.

But by choosing to put his family first, the 82-year-old president has raised new questions about his legacy. Biden has held himself up as placing his respect for the American judicial system and rule of law over his own personal concerns. It was part of an effort to draw a deliberate contrast with Republican Donald Trump. Now, both his broken promise and his act of clemency are a political lightning rod. Some Democrats are frustrated over Joe Biden reversing course and pardoning his son Hunter ATLANTA (AP) — Already reeling from their November defeat at the polls, Democrats now are grappling with President Joe Biden's pardoning of his son for a federal felony conviction — after the party spent years slamming Donald Trump as a threat to democracy who operates above the law. The White House on Monday struggled to defend the pardon claiming the prosecution was politically motivated — a page out of Trump's playbook. That explanation did not satisfy some Democrats who are angry that Biden’s reversal could make it harder to take on Trump. Hezbollah fires into Israel-held area after multiple Israeli strikes in Lebanon since truce began JERUSALEM (AP) — Hezbollah fired into a disputed border zone held by Israel after multiple Israeli strikes inside Lebanon since a ceasefire took hold last week. The militant group said the volley, its first during the truce, was a warning shot in response to what it called repeated Israeli violations. Israeli leaders threatened to retaliate, further straining the fragile U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire. Israeli strikes in recent days, including a string of hits on Monday, have killed at least four people in Lebanon. U.S. officials said the ceasefire was largely holding. Great Lakes region gets yet more snow after a weekend of snarled Thanksgiving travel Some storm-weary residents of the Great Lakes region saw additional snow and faced the prospect of even more accumulations this week. Snow showers fell in western Michigan overnight, and heavier, persistent snow of up to a foot was expected to follow Monday. Turkey calls for reconciliation between Syria government and opposition to end conflict ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's foreign minister says the recent rapid advance by opposition fighters in Syria shows that Syrian President Bashar Assad must reconcile with his own people and hold dialogue with the opposition. Speaking Monday at a joint news conference in Ankara with his Iranian counterpart, Hakan Fidan said Turkey and Iran, which support opposing sides in Syria’s civil war, have agreed to resume diplomatic efforts along with Russia to restore calm days after insurgents launched a lightning offensive and captured almost all of the country’s largest city, Aleppo. The swift advance by fighters that Turkey supports was a huge embarrassment for Assad. Stock market today: Rising tech stocks pull Wall Street to another record NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks pulled Wall Street to another record amid mixed trading. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% Monday after closing November at an all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. Super Micro Computer, a stock that’s been on an AI-driven roller coaster, soared after saying an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or the company’s board. Retailers were mixed coming off Black Friday and heading into what’s expected to be the best Cyber Monday on record. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. A top Fed official leans toward December rate cut but says it depends on economic data WASHINGTON (AP) — A top Federal Reserve official says he is leaning toward supporting an interest rate cut when the Fed meets in two weeks but that evidence of persistent inflation before then could cause him to change that view. Speaking at George Washington University, Christopher Waller, a key member of the Fed’s Board of Governors, said he was confident that inflation is headed lower and that the central bank will likely keep reducing its key rate, which affects many consumer and business loans. But he noted that there’s a risk that inflation “may be getting stuck above” the Fed’s 2% target, which would support an argument for keeping the Fed’s rate unchanged this month. More than 3 million travelers screened at US airports in a single day. That's a record Travelers heading home after the Thanksgiving holiday are setting a record. The Transportation Security Administration says that it screened nearly 3.1 million travelers on Sunday, breaking the previous record by about 74,000. That mark was set on July 7, also a Sunday after a holiday, July Fourth. Hundreds of thousands of travelers were delayed or had their flights canceled. FlightAware says more 6,800 flights were delayed on Sunday, with the highest numbers at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Seventy-seven Democrats in the House of Representatives signed a letter Thursday accusing Israel of violating human rights law, disagreeing with the Biden-Harris administration and potentially triggering an arms embargo on Israel. The signatories to the letter include well-known left-wing Jewish Democrats, such as Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Sara Jacobs (D-CA). The latter is romantically involved with former Democratic congressional candidate and former Obama administration official Ammar Campa-Najjar , who is the grandson of a notorious Palestinian terrorist. The letter claims to support Israel’s right to self-defense, then undermines that claim by arguing that Israel is not complying with international human rights law and humanitarian law, which would mean that the U.S. would have to cut off arms sales to the Jewish state, even as it faces a war on several fronts against terrorists and the Iranian regime. The Jewish News Syndicate elaborated : While the letter does not make an explicit request to halt aid, it references the statute requiring the administration to cut off arms sales to countries that block delivery of humanitarian aid, and accuses Israel of deliberately restricting aid. ... The letter asks the administration to create a full assessment of Israel’s compliance with U.S. arms sales laws, saying that their concerns “remain urgent and largely unresolved, including arbitrary restrictions on humanitarian aid and insufficient delivery routes, among others.” ... The letter was led by Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Madeleine Dean (D-PA) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA). The effort is backed by the left-wing, George Soros-funded J Street group, which often opposes Israel in Congress. Joel B. Newsom, a Democrat, proposed creating a new version of the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program , which was phased out in 2023 after funding 594,000 cars and saving 456 million gallons of fuel, Newsom’s office said. “Consumers continue to prove the skeptics wrong – zero-emission vehicles are here to stay," Newsom said in a statement. "We’re not turning back on a clean transportation future — we’re going to make it more affordable for people to drive vehicles that don’t pollute.” Newsom’s proposal is part of his plan to protect California's progressive policies ahead of Republican President-elect Donald Trump's second term. He called the state Legislature to convene in a special session to help “Trump-proof” state laws by giving the attorney general’s office more funding to fight federal challenges. But a budget shortfall could complicate California’s resistance efforts. Early budget projections show the state could face a $2 billion deficit next year, according to a report released last week by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office. That’s an improvement from an estimated $46.8 billion deficit the state faced last year, but the shortfall could still curtail the state’s ability to expand new programs and fight federal legal challenges. Legislative leaders in both chambers have said the state needs to stay prudent in anticipation of future budget deficits. Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump's transition team, said the president-elect would deliver on his campaign promises, “including stopping attacks on gas-powered cars.” “When he takes office, President Trump will support the auto industry, allowing space for both gas-powered cars AND electric vehicles,” she said in a statement. Money for the new rebate system could come from the state's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is funded by polluters under the state’s cap-and-trade program, the governor's office said. Officials didn’t say how much the program would cost or how the rebates would work. California has surpassed 2 million zero-emission vehicles sold, according to Newsom's office. The state has passed policies in recent years to transition away from fossil fuel-powered cars , trucks , trains and lawn mowers . Trump previously vowed to end federal electric vehicle tax credits , which are worth up to $7,500 for new zero-emission vehicles. There’s also a $4,000 credit for used ones. But Trump later softened his stance as Tesla CEO Elon Musk became a supporter and adviser. Newsom's proposed rebates could exclude Tesla and other automakers in an effort to promote more market competition and innovation, according to the governor's office. But that is subject to negotiation with the state Legislature. Musk called Tesla's possible exclusion “insane” in a post on X. About 42% of rebates went to people buying or leasing Tesla vehicles under the state's previous clean vehicle rebate program, according to data from the California Air Resources Board. Trump criticized Newsom on social media after the governor called for a special session, calling out the high cost of living in California and the state’s homelessness crisis. Trump said Newsom was “stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again.’” Newsom said on his podcast earlier this month that he reached out to Trump after the election. He said at a news conference last week that he still hadn’t heard back from the president-elect. Shareholders of Zomato have approved the company’s proposal to raise Rs 8,500 crore through a qualified institutional placement (QIP). The decision was supported by 99.7% of votes. The fundraising initiative, cleared by the board on October 22, aims to strengthen Zomato’s balance sheet amid intensifying competition in the quick commerce sector. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal stated earlier that the move is crucial as the industry experiences rapid growth and a surge in funding activity. As per the company's filing on the exchange, "we hereby inform that shareholders of the Company have duly passed the special resolutions for the items as set out in the Notice approving the following: ● To raise capital by way of a qualified institutions placement to eligible investors through an issuance of equity shares; ● Approval for implementation of Zomato Employee Stock Option Plan 2018, Zomato Employee Stock Option Plan 2021, Zomato Employee Stock Option Plan 2022 and Zomato Employee Stock Option Plan 2024 through trust route and amendments thereto" Chief Financial Officer Akshant Goyal explained that while the board approved the enabling resolution for Rs 8,500 crore, the final amount will depend on market conditions and the timing of the QIP launch. As of September 30, Zomato reported a cash balance of Rs 10,813 crore, down from Rs 12,539 crore at the end of June. The decrease followed Zomato’s Rs 2,048 crore acquisition of Paytm’s events and ticketing business. In addition to the fundraising plan, Zomato’s shareholders approved the creation of a trust to implement its employee stock ownership plans (ESOP) for 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024. The announcement comes as Zomato’s rivals, Swiggy and Zepto, have recently concluded significant financing rounds. Zomato became profitable in the first quarter of FY24 and reported a 68% year-on-year increase in revenue for the July-September quarter to Rs 4,799 crore. The company's net profit surged five-fold to Rs 176 crore during the period. On Friday, the shares of Zomato closed at Rs 264.89. The 52 week high and low of the share is Rs 298.25 and Rs 112.50 respectively. According to the BSE analytics, the shares have given massive returns of 129.20 per cent in the last 1 year.
