Students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) enjoy visiting Selfridge Military Air Museum and the volunteers who show them around love it when they do. “The field of aviation is well suited for the study of STEAM objectives,” Selfridge Military Air Museum Executive Director Steven Mrozek said, in a news release announcing that the museum has received $2,500 from the Consumer Energy Foundation. The grant presented on behalf of Consumers Energy’’s Veteran’s Advisory Panel business employee resource group will help to support the programs offered by the museum’s new Aviation Education Center. “Ensuring Michigan’s students have access to the opportunities and programs that can educate and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow is critical not only to the future success of our state, but to their development as people” said Cathy Wilson, secretary/treasurer of the Consumers Energy Foundation. “We’re proud to provide this grant to support the Selfridge program and look forward to seeing how it benefits kids across the state.” The Consumer Energy Foundation grant follows a $25,000 Ralph C. Wilson Trustee Program Grant that was given to the museum that sits on the grounds of Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township over the summer. The remarkable 106-year-history of the base and the museum’s collection of military aircraft, artifacts and interactive activities provide a wonderful background to its educational programming. The Consumers Energy Foundation is the charitable arm of Consumers Energy. The Foundation contributes to the growth and strengthening of Michigan communities. In 2023, the Consumers Energy Foundation, Consumers Energy, its employees and retirees contributed over $11 million to Michigan nonprofits. “Our focus will be primarily on aeronautical engineering and aviation technology and introducing students to the science of flight,” said Mrozek, a U.S. Army Veteran from Fraser and former national historian for the 82nd Airborne Division Association, whose military experience and passion for history adds to the experience students get during their visits to the museum. In fact, that’s the beauty of the program, all of the volunteers have a connection to museum’s history and a story to tell. The Selfridge Military Air Museum is on the grounds of Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township. In addition to educational programming volunteers at the museum provide tours and other programs for the public. Those looking to visit the museum are urged to visit the museum’s website at least a week in advance for additional details such as admission costs and assistance for base access. HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) — The first woman to command Canada's military called out a U.S. senator on Saturday for questioning the role of women in combat. Gen. Jennie Carignan responded to comments made by Idaho Republican Sen. Jim Risch , the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who was asked on Friday whether President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth , should retract comments that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . “I think it’s delusional for anybody to not agree that women in combat creates certain unique situations that have to be dealt with. I think the jury’s still out on how to do that," Risch said during a panel session at the Halifax International Security Forum on Friday. Carignan, Canada's chief of defense staff and the first woman to command the armed forces of any Group of 20 or Group of Seven country, took issue with those remarks during a panel session on Saturday. "If you’ll allow me, I would first like maybe to respond to Senator Risch’s statement yesterday about women in combat because I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that women are a distraction to defense and national security," Carignan said. “After 39 years of career as a combat arms officer and risking my life in many operations across the world, I can’t believe that in 2024, we still have to justify the contribution of women to their defense and to their service, in their country. I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that this is that it is some kind of social experiment.” Carignan said women have participating in combat for hundreds of years but have never been recognized for fighting for their country. She noted the women military personnel in the room. “All the women sitting here in uniform, stepping in, and deciding to get into harm’s way and fight for their country, need to be recognized for doing so," she said. “So again, this is the distraction, not the women themselves." Carignan received a standing ovation at the forum, which attracts defense and security officials from Western democracies. Hegseth has reignited a debate that many thought had been long settled: Should women be allowed to serve their country by fighting on the front lines? The former Fox News commentator made it clear, in his own book and in interviews, that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . If Hegseth is confirmed by the Senate, he could try to end the Pentagon’s nearly decade-old practice of making all combat jobs open to women. Hegseth’s remarks have generated a barrage of praise and condemnation. Carignan was promoted to the rank of general during the change-of-command ceremony this past summer, after being chosen by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to become Canada’s first female defense chief. Carignan is no stranger to firsts. She was also the first woman to command a combat unit in the Canadian military, and her career has included deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Syria. For the last three years, she has been the chief of professional conduct and culture, a job created as a result of the sexual misconduct scandal in 2021. Her appointment this year comes as Canada continues to face criticism from NATO allies for not spending 2% of its gross domestic product on defense. The Canadian government recently said that it would reach its NATO commitment by 2032. Risch said Friday Trump would laugh at Canada’s current military spending plans and said the country must do more.Thousands of protesters marched through Barcelona on Saturday demanding lower rents in Spain's second city. Barcelona, which has already taken action to stop the spread of holiday rental apartments, is the latest Spanish city to see protests for cheaper housing. Backed by left-wing parties and unions, the demonstrators gathered in central Barcelona behind a giant banner declaring "Lower the rents". "Today a new political cycle starts concerning housing," Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for the Catalan Tenants Union, the main organiser, told reporters. "Investors must not be allowed to come to our cities and play with the apartments like a game of Monopoly," she added. The union would target "profiteers" who are taking "half of our salaries", Arcarazo said. The demonstrators demanded a 50 percent cut in rents, leases with an unlimited term and a ban on "speculative" sales of buildings. They threatened to start a rent strike. An estimated 22,000 people took part in a similar demonstration in Madrid on October 13. Campaigns have been launched in other cities. According to the Idealista specialised website, rental prices per square metre have risen 82 percent across Spain over the past decade. The average salary has gone up by 17 percent in that time, according to the national statistics institute. Facing pressure over a housing crisis, the government in 2023 passed legislation calling for more social housing, greater restrictions on rents in high demand areas and penalties for owners who do not occupy properties. But rents have continued to rise while the government has battled city and regional authorities to get some parts of the law applied. vid-vab/tw/jmJeddah: The Jeddah Book Fair concluded on Saturday, attracting thousands of visitors with local and international booksellers.
