A high-profile barrister who was cleared of misconduct over social media posts has called on the head of the Bar Standards Board to resign. Dr Charlotte Proudman, who specialises in family law, had faced a Bar Standards Board (BSB) disciplinary tribunal over a 14-part Twitter thread criticising a judge’s ruling over a domestic abuse case, saying it echoed a “boys’ club”. However, the five charges against the 36-year-old were dropped on Thursday. In an interview with The Times, Dr Proudman described the position of Mark Neale, the board’s director-general, as “untenable” and said its chairwoman, Kathryn Stone, should also stand down. “They need a change, not just in those two individuals, though, because, of course, it seeps down to the rest of the organisation,” she said. The charges alleged Dr Proudman had “failed to act with integrity” in posting the tweets, that they amounted to professional misconduct, were “misleading” and “inaccurately reflected the findings of the judge” in the case. The women’s rights campaigner was also accused of behaving in a way “which was likely to diminish the trust and confidence which the public placed in her and in the profession”, and that she “knowingly or recklessly misled or attempted to mislead the public” by making the posts. But panel chairman Nicholas Ainley found her tweets are protected under Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right of freedom of expression. He said her tweets did not “gravely damage” the judiciary, which would “put them outside” of Article 10 protection, even if they “might not have been pleasant for any judge to read” or even “hurtful”. “We take the view that the judiciary of England and Wales is far more robust than that,” he said. The panel also concluded that some of the tweets were only inaccurate “to a minor degree” and not to the extent necessary for a charge of a lack of integrity. Speaking after the hearing, Dr Proudman told the PA news agency: “This ruling is a victory for women’s rights and a right to freedom of speech. “The prosecution against me brought by my regulatory body, the Bar Standards Board, should never have happened and I said that from day one. “I criticised a domestic abuse judgment. Everyone should have the right to do that, whether you’re a barrister or not. Our justice system, which I strongly believe in, is robust enough to withstand criticism from me.” She believes her tweets help “foster confidence” in the justice system, adding: “Only that way can we go about building change and a better treatment for all victims, women and children and men who are affected by domestic abuse.” Explaining that the BSB appears to have spent almost £40,000 “of barristers’ money” on instructing counsel in her case, she added: “I think it’s shameful that they’re using our money to pay for, in my view, malicious, vexatious prosecutions which I have no doubt was a personal attack against me as a woman and as a feminist, as an outspoken critic and advocate for women’s rights.” Dr Proudman called for “systemic change” within the board. “They don’t understand gender, they don’t understand diversity, I don’t think they’ve ever heard of the concept misogyny and certainly not institutional misogyny,” she said. “Until they recognise the deeply rooted, entrenched issue of bullying, harassment, sexism at the bar, for which I have suffered relentlessly... and own up to it I don’t think we’re going to see any change and I have no confidence in them.” She told of how male barristers have called her insulting names on social media and made derogatory comments about her. In the posts on April 6 2022, Dr Proudman referenced a case in which her client alleged she had been subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour by her husband, a part-time judge, meaning she had been “unable to freely enter” the couple’s “post-nuptial” financial agreement. Commenting on the ruling by Family Court judge Sir Jonathan Cohen, Dr Proudman wrote: “I represented Amanda Traharne. “She said she was coerced into signing a post-nuptial agreement by her husband (who is a part-time judge). I lost the case. “I do not accept the Judge’s reasoning. In its fall economic update Monday, the Liberal government said it would invest in cutting-edge technology for law enforcement, so that only people who are eligible to remain in Canada do so. People from all over the world have long come to the United States in search of opportunities. That includes immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, and temporary workers and students who come to the U.S. on specialty visas. Among the latter are skilled foreign workers, a select group granted special access by the H-1B visa program, designed to boost innovation and the economy via a " brain gain ," according to the Brookings Institute. Since launching in 1990, the program has allowed U.S. employers to hire exceptional foreign-born applicants with bachelor's degrees or the equivalent by offering them employment in hard-to-fill positions. An H-1B visa allows foreign-born workers to stay in the country for three years, with the option to extend their stay for up to six years. In some cases, workers remain even longer if employers sponsor their green cards. Most jobs filled by H-1B workers are in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. H-1B visa holders tend to have wages within the top 10% of U.S. workers. In computer-related fields, for instance, the average annual income was $129,000 in 2022 for H-1B workers, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Congress has capped the number of H-1B workers since the program began; currently, around 85,000 applicants are accepted each year. Within that total, 20,000 spots are reserved for those with U.S. institution-issued master's or doctorates. That number has remained unchanged for nearly two decades—even as applications have dramatically risen and backlogs have made it increasingly difficult to get a visa. From 2001 to 2003, the applicant limit was three times as high at 195,000; over the past 10 years, the program received such an influx of applicants it prompted Congress to institute a lottery system in 2014. Although exceptions to the cap are granted for nonprofit research organizations, the government, and colleges and universities, the number of applications far exceeds availability. In fiscal year 2025, for instance, there were an astounding 423,028 for just 65,000 spots. Critics of the cap say that the inability for more workers to land positions in the U.S. creates a number of problems, one of which is a lack of qualified staff for the exploding tech sector. H-1B Employer Data used its own data, news reports, and economic research to explore how a shortage of visas for skilled workers has impacted the U.S. economy. In 2024, Citizenship and Immigration Services changed the process for applying for an H-1B visa after 780,884 applications were filed that year. This process overhaul was meant to increase the odds of applicants vying for a spot and curb abuses of the system. Employers and potential employees were gaming the system, hoping multiple submissions for individual workers would increase their likelihood of being accepted; the barrier to entry had also been lowered to a $10 fee and electronic registration instead of a full application. Employers vying for top talent aren't the only ones benefitting from the H-1B visa program. Foreign workers tend to have different skill sets than American workers, which is partly why they're so sought-after. According to the American Immigration Council, workers from abroad may even help create additional jobs by spending and investing their earnings in the U.S. They stimulate the labor market by expanding operations in the U.S. and starting new businesses. This entrepreneurial spirit, long a hallmark of U.S. innovation, drives economic growth. "We don't know which [immigrant] is going to have the brilliant insight that totally transforms the economy over the next 20-30 years," David Bier, director of immigration studies at libertarian think tank the Cato Institute, told Vox . Studies show that the business impact of the H-1B visa program extends beyond individual employers as well. A 2024 study from academic researchers and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond found that companies that win H-1B lottery visas hire additional employees, generate more revenue, and survive longer. In 2017, researchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research found that H-1B workers benefit consumers and increase profits in the IT sector. Among the roughly 600,000 H-1B recipients in the country at any time, as many as 75,000 join the STEM workforce every year. Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Intel, among the top 100 employers of H-1B workers, reap the rewards from foreign-born workers, who tend to fill in gaps in the STEM workforce—and in some cases, create opportunities. Employers, in turn, are eager to hire more H-1B workers to cultivate innovation and growth. Other types of companies, including outsourcing firms, many based in India, also depend on H-1B workers. They are inundated with USCIS applications for employees they consider "interchangeable," according to Vox. These visa holders, typically junior programmers, will accept lower salaries and relocation requirements, and their hiring companies account for more than half of the top 30 H-1B employers. There is concern, however, that these workers could be underpaid and exploited, giving some credence to the claim that the program allows lower-wage foreign workers to take jobs from higher-earning Americans. However, existing data shows that H-1B workers help raise salaries and expand job opportunities for everyone. Employers of H-1B workers are also required to attest that U.S. workers' salaries and working conditions will not be negatively affected, and notify incumbent employees when they hire these applicants. As evidenced by continued efforts to reform the system, there's still plenty of room for improvement. For every one person who is granted an H-1B visa, four are denied. This means the government—Congress sets the quota—leaves $61 billion on the table every year, according to a paper by Bier, who also suggested adjusting the cap to match demand, and making changes to maintain a sufficient population of skilled workers in the U.S. In other words, the current cap on H-1B visas may actually thwart economic growth. Nine jobs are moved out of the U.S. for every 10 unapproved H-1B applications, according to a 2023 study from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, as reported by Bloomberg. Some $86 billion would be lost with a 10% reduction in guest workers, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond economist. Despite fraught debates over immigration and foreign-born workers, they have always been part of the uniquely American story of opportunity and improvement. Netanyahu, who has had a series of health issues in recent years, has gone to great lengths to bolster a public image of himself as a healthy, energetic leader. During his trial this month, he boasted about working 18-hour days, accompanied by a cigar. But as Israel’s longest-serving leader, such a grueling workload over a total of 17 years in power could take a toll on his well-being. Netanyahu, 75, is among older world leaders including US President Joe Biden, 82, President-elect Donald Trump, 78, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, and Pope Francis, 88, who have come under scrutiny for their age and health issues. Netanyahu’s latest condition is common in older men, but the procedure has had some fallout. The judges overseeing his trial accepted a request from his lawyer on Sunday to call off three days of testimony scheduled this week. According to Netanyahu’s office, the Israeli leader was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection on Wednesday stemming from a benign enlargement of his prostate. The infection was treated successfully with antibiotics, but doctors said the surgery was needed in any case. Complications from prostate enlargement are common in men in their 70s and 80s, Dr. Shay Golan, head of the oncology urology service at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center, told Israeli Army Radio. Golan spoke in general terms and was not involved in Netanyahu’s care or treatment. He said an enlarged prostate can block proper emptying of the bladder, leading to a build-up of urine that can lead to an infection or other complications. After medicinal treatment, doctors can recommend a procedure to remove the prostate to prevent future blockages, Golan said. President-elect Donald Trump said Friday he's in favor of eliminating daylight saving time, calling it "inconvenient" and "very costly" as his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) directors also push for action on the matter. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation," Trump posted on Truth Social Friday. While Trump tweeted, "Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me," in 2019, he appears to be changing course now. This comes as his DOGE directors, Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk and Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, have advocated for the time change to be eliminated. "Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time change," Musk posted in response to a poll on X calling for DST to be abolished. "It's inefficient & easy to change," Ramaswamy responded. By KENYA HUNTER, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — As she checked into a recent flight to Mexico for vacation, Teja Smith chuckled at the idea of joining another Women’s March on Washington . As a Black woman, she just couldn’t see herself helping to replicate the largest act of resistance against then-President Donald Trump’s first term in January 2017. Even in an election this year where Trump questioned his opponent’s race , held rallies featuring racist insults and falsely claimed Black migrants in Ohio were eating residents’ pets , he didn’t just win a second term. He became the first Republican in two decades to clinch the popular vote, although by a small margin. “It’s like the people have spoken and this is what America looks like,” said Smith, the Los Angeles-based founder of the advocacy social media agency, Get Social. “And there’s not too much more fighting that you’re going to be able to do without losing your own sanity.” After Trump was declared the winner over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris , many politically engaged Black women said they were so dismayed by the outcome that they were reassessing — but not completely abandoning — their enthusiasm for electoral politics and movement organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency. Harris’ loss spurred a wave of Black women across social media resolving to prioritize themselves, before giving so much to a country that over and over has shown its indifference to their concerns. AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the United States was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, with Trump set to return to office in two months, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to. “America is going to have to save herself,” said LaTosha Brown, the co-founder of the national voting rights group Black Voters Matter. She compared Black women’s presence in social justice movements as “core strategists and core organizers” to the North Star, known as the most consistent and dependable star in the galaxy because of its seemingly fixed position in the sky. People can rely on Black women to lead change, Brown said, but the next four years will look different. “That’s not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. ... I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me,” she said. AP VoteCast paints a clear picture of Black women’s concerns. Black female voters were most likely to say that democracy was the single most important factor for their vote, compared to other motivators such as high prices or abortion. More than 7 in 10 Black female voters said they were “very concerned” that electing Trump would lead the nation toward authoritarianism, while only about 2 in 10 said this about Harris. About 9 in 10 Black female voters supported Harris in 2024, according to AP VoteCast, similar to the share that backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. Trump received support from more than half of white voters, who made up the vast majority of his coalition in both years. Like voters overall, Black women were most likely to say the economy and jobs were the most important issues facing the country, with about one-third saying that. But they were more likely than many other groups to say that abortion and racism were the top issues, and much less likely than other groups to say immigration was the top issue. Despite those concerns, which were well-voiced by Black women throughout the campaign, increased support from young men of color and white women helped expand Trump’s lead and secured his victory. Politically engaged Black women said they don’t plan to continue positioning themselves in the vertebrae of the “backbone” of America’s democracy. The growing movement prompting Black women to withdraw is a shift from history, where they are often present and at the forefront of political and social change. One of the earliest examples is the women’s suffrage movement that led to ratification in 1920 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution , which gave women the right to vote. Black women, however, were prevented from voting for decades afterward because of Jim Crow-era literacy tests, poll taxes and laws that blocked the grandchildren of slaves from voting. Most Black women couldn’t vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Black women were among the organizers and counted among the marchers brutalized on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, during the historic march in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery that preceded federal legislation. Decades later, Black women were prominent organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police and vigilantes. In his 2024 campaign, Trump called for leveraging federal money to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in government programs and discussions of race, gender or sexual orientation in schools. His rhetoric on immigration, including false claims that Black Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats and dogs, drove support for his plan to deport millions of people . Tenita Taylor, a Black resident of Atlanta who supported Trump this year, said she was initially excited about Harris’ candidacy. But after thinking about how high her grocery bills have been, she feels that voting for Trump in hopes of finally getting lower prices was a form of self-prioritization. “People say, ‘Well, that’s selfish, it was gonna be better for the greater good,”’ she said. “I’m a mother of five kids. ... The things that (Democrats) do either affect the rich or the poor.” Some of Trump’s plans affect people in Olivia Gordon’s immediate community, which is why she struggled to get behind the “Black women rest” wave. Gordon, a New York-based lawyer who supported the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s presidential nominee, Claudia de la Cruz, worries about who may be left behind if the 92% of Black women voters who backed Harris simply stopped advocating. “We’re talking millions of Black women here. If millions of Black women take a step back, it absolutely leaves holes, but for other Black women,” she said. “I think we sometimes are in the bubble of if it’s not in your immediate circle, maybe it doesn’t apply to you. And I truly implore people to understand that it does.” Nicole Lewis, an Alabama-based therapist who specializes in treating Black women’s stress, said she’s aware that Black women withdrawing from social impact movements could have a fallout. But she also hopes that it forces a reckoning for the nation to understand the consequences of not standing in solidarity with Black women. “It could impact things negatively because there isn’t that voice from the most empathetic group,” she said. “I also think it’s going to give other groups an opportunity to step up. ... My hope is that they do show up for themselves and everyone else.” Brown said a reckoning might be exactly what the country needs, but it’s a reckoning for everyone else. The Bucs finished 7-5 surpassing the win total of the last two seasons combined. After back-to-back 3-8 seasons, Lamb reflected on the progress the program made in his first year as head coach. “I’m really proud of what we accomplished this season. Seven wins was a big deal for us,” Lamb said. “Going into the season, we would have all taken 7-5. We could have been better in certain situations, but we won some close games and lost some close games. Inheriting what we inherited, I’m glad where we’re at.” Lamb believes he knows what the Bucs need to become a championship team. He pointed out if two onside kicks against North Dakota State and Mercer had gone their way, the Bucs were looking at a 9-3 season and a FCS playoff berth. He saw the biggest area of growth as being competitive each time ETSU took the field. “The thing I’m most proud of is the way we competed,” he said. “There were some games like 58-7 (a 2023 loss to Western Carolina), some miserable Saturdays for the guys in the locker room, the coaching staff and fans. There wasn’t one game this year where we didn’t feel we could win. Even the Appalachian game was 17-10 into the third quarter.” Comparing it to his previous four seasons at Gardner-Webb, Lamb said in the first year, the team learned to lose close. The second year, they won close games. The third year, they won big and the fourth year, they were Big South-OVC Co-Champions. “We’ve skipped that first step. Did we lose some close games? Yes, but we also won some close games,” Lamb said. “We’re in the phase where 7-5 shows up 9-3 or 10-2 next year where we beat some teams handily.” Lamb was pleased to see his team grind out a 16-9 win at VMI to end the season. It was a clean game for the Bucs with just one penalty and one turnover. Freshman Baylor Hayes got his first start at quarterback and did what Lamb asked him to do. “That was the thought process going with the young quarterback,” Lamb said. “I knew it wasn’t going to be a 35-31 ballgame. You look at the film and every game they’ve played up there, it’s low scoring and tough to win. I thought he managed the game well. One penalty, one turnover, if we’d had that in half our games, we’d be sitting here 10-2. You look and we’re minus 13 in turnover margin.” Hayes was solid, not spectacular, completing 15 of 25 passes for 119 yards. The coach graded the young signal-caller well for the performance, as he commented a lot of things don’t show up statistically. “We didn’t have any pre-snap penalties and he got us in and out of checks well. That’s some of the things the fans don’t really see,” Lamb said. “At Furman, we check a run into a blitz and we have to punt that drive. Those plays don’t show up on the stat sheet, but that’s what playing quarterback is about. When you’re recruiting or evaluating that position, there is so much more than the tangibles.” The quarterback position is the biggest question mark heading into next season. Lamb has talked to Jaylen King, who started the first nine games for the Bucs, about redshirting to give him time to develop his skills. The coach said there’s about a 50/50 chance that King enters the transfer portal. The coach expects Hayes and former Tennessee High quarterback Steven Johnson to return next season. They’re also looking to bring in a transfer to compete for the starting job. Leading receiver A.J. Johnson announced before the VMI game that he was entering the transfer portal. Johnson, who had 40 catches for 662 yards and six touchdowns, was one of several players who followed Lamb from Gardner-Webb. “It was a mutual decision. I felt some things were leaking into the program affecting the team and he felt different about it,” Lamb said. “Sometimes, you’ve got to cut bait. A.J. decided to go in the portal and I felt that was best for the team. I’ve done a lot for A.J. We took a chance on him at Gardner-Webb, and A.J. has done a lot for me. Sometimes, it’s best for both to part ways. I love him to death and wish him the best.” After bringing in 50 new players in what Lamb described as a hectic January and February, he’s looking more at 18-20 new players this offseason. Of course, that hinges on the coaches being able to retain the existing roster. Lamb said conversations with players over the past two days indicted that 95 percent of them were happy at ETSU. “We’re going to compensate some of our best players. That’s the way it’s working across the country,” Lamb said. “But, these guys aren’t necessarily staying for money. They’re staying because they like where they’re at, they like the staff and how we played this year. All that matters more than the money.”
