Keir Starmer has been accused of “undermining Brexit” and the will of the people with his plans to hire an EU negotiator to reset Britain’s relationship with the European Union . The role, which comes with a whopping £200,000 per year salary will focus on leading discussions with the trading bloc as the Prime Minister continues to strengthen Britain’s relationship with them. Starmer has made no secret of his desire to “reset” Britain’s relationship with the EU and has made several high-profile trips to EU countries and summits since his election in July. But the plan to hire an additional bureaucrat has caused fury amongst senior figures in the Conservative party who have blasted the direction of travel under the new Prime Minister. Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel MP said: “ Keir Starmer continues to undermine Brexit and our status as a sovereign nation with his plan to take the country back into the EU. “The Conservative Party will not stand by and allow the will of the British people be reversed while Labour arrogantly capitulates to the EU.” Labour says the new approach will tackle trade barriers, address people-smuggling, and enhance cooperation with allies to counter threats such as Russian aggression. Labour sources have dismissed the idea that the move is an attempt to reverse Brexit , with the Prime Minister stating on the record that he has no plans to re-enter the customs union or single market. A Labour source said: “There will be no return to the EU, customs union, single market or freedom of movement.” In October, Keir Starmer pledged to “make Brexit work” at a meeting with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. But any reset of relations with the EU is likely to require Britain making concessions including the acceptance of migrants or some form of freedom of movement. Speaking at the time Starmer said: “Better cooperation with the EU will deliver the benefits the British people deserve – securing our borders, keeping us safe and boosting economic growth.” According to the Times , Ms von der Leyen will want the UK to agree to a new asylum pact from 2026 which will see member states resettle a set number of asylum seekers. It is believed that this figure could be as many as 30,000 per year. It is also believed that the EU will push the idea of a youth mobility scheme , something it sees as simple to implement and a gesture of goodwill. One EU official told the Guardian: “The commission mainly wants to see if Starmer is willing to engage on the detail of a youth mobility scheme. If he shows a willingness to do so, that could unlock a lot of other ‘low-hanging fruit’ such as a defence deal.”

It’s been an easy come, easy go term for some in Nunavut’s cabinet. Since the last territorial election in October 2021, six MLAs have been elected to the executive chamber by their colleagues and have since departed for one reason or another. All continue to serve as regular members. Following Hudson Bay MLA Daniel Qavvik’s departure from cabinet last week, Nunatsiaq News is looking back on who has resigned, and why, over the past three years. Adam Arreak Lightstone Lightstone was the first of two original ministers to resign from cabinet. The Iqaluit-Manirajak MLA served as minister of finance and minister of human resources for five months. In March 2022, Lightstone lost his cabinet portfolios over an apparent conflict of interest. The following month, he resigned from cabinet. In an April 2022 speech to his colleagues, Lightstone denied behaving in an “unethical fashion,” but acknowledged he had made a mistake. Craig Simailak Simailak, the MLA for Baker Lake, was elected to cabinet the same day Lightstone announced he was stepping down . During his 10-month tenure in cabinet, Simailak held several roles including minister of justice, minister responsible for Qulliq Energy Corp., minister responsible for labour, minister responsible for democratic institutions, and minister responsible for the Human Rights Tribunal. He announced in the legislature in March 2023 that he was resigning from cabinet, citing a struggle to balance work and family life. Joanna Quassa Nearly two years into the sixth legislative session, Quassa announced her resignation from cabinet in a September 2023 news release, citing family reasons. Quassa was a newly elected as the MLA for Aggu in November 2021. A month later, she was elected into cabinet by colleagues. During her cabinet tenure, she served as minister of environment, minister of energy, and minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College. Joelie Kaernerk Kaernerk and Qavvik were chosen during a leadership conference in September 2023 to fill the two cabinet vacancies left by Simailak and Quassa. Kaernerk, the MLA for Amittuq, served as minister of culture and heritage, minister of languages, and minister responsible for Qulliq Energy Corp. In January 2024, Premier P.J. Akeeagok announced in a news release that he was stripping Kaernerk of his cabinet portfolios , citing “code of conduct” violations. Kaernerk would step down as a minister thereafter. During this year’s winter sitting, MLAs voted to suspend Kaernerk from the legislature for showing up to work intoxicated. He returned to the chambers during the fall sitting. Karen Nutarak Tununiq MLA Karen Nutarak was voted into cabinet this past March via a motion in the legislature. During her brief tenure in cabinet, Nutarak was minister of justice, the minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College, minister responsible for labour, and minister responsible for the Human Rights Tribunal. Following the spring sitting, three months into the job, Akeeagok announced Nutarak’s resignation from cabinet, citing personal and family reasons. Daniel Qavvik Hudson Bay MLA Daniel Qavvik’s tenure as a minister came to an end Nov. 13 . He held multiple portfolios, including as minister of environment; energy; languages; and culture and heritage. “Personal reasons” were cited in a Nov. 14 news release announcing his resignation. A week earlier, Qavvik was one of 10 MLAs to stand by Akeeagok and defeat a motion to remove the premier . Nunatsiaq News has attempted on several occasions to contact Qavvik about his resignation, but he has not responded.New Jersey Criminal Defense Attorney Adam M. Lustberg Releases Article Addressing Out-of-State Warrants 12-13-2024 07:44 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society Press release from: ABNewswire New Jersey criminal defense attorney Adam M. Lustberg ( https://www.lustberglaw.com/blog/what-happens-if-you-have-a-warrant-in-another-state/ ), of Lustberg Law Offices, LLC, sheds light on the serious implications of out-of-state warrants. In an informative piece, Lustberg underscores the need for prompt and strategic legal response when confronted with such warrants, which can significantly impact one's legal status and day-to-day life. A warrant issued by one state, known as an out-of-state or interstate warrant, mandates that a person appears in that state to face charges. This can often lead to an extradition process if not resolved proactively. New Jersey criminal defense attorney Adam M. Lustberg emphasizes that these warrants, which can arise from charges ranging from felonies to missed court appearances, must be handled with urgency due to the potential consequences, including detention and a tarnished record. Adam M. Lustberg highlights the role of key legal frameworks such as the U.S. Constitution and the Uniform Criminal Extradition Act (UCEA). These frameworks help ensure that states cooperate on such cases, upholding justice while protecting the accused's rights. "New Jersey's adoption of the UCEA underscores the state's commitment to both uphold the law and safeguard individuals' rights," the New Jersey criminal defense attorney noted. The act lays out the extradition procedures, involving formal requests from the issuing state to apprehend the accused and issue a governor's warrant. New Jersey criminal defense attorney Adam M. Lustberg also explains that being subject to an out-of-state warrant can lead to immediate arrest during routine interactions, such as traffic stops. Once detained, the individual may face potential extradition to the issuing state and subsequent legal proceedings. This makes understanding one's rights and obtaining qualified legal support critical. "It's not just about responding; it's about making informed decisions that protect your future," Lustberg advises. The impact on employment and personal life can be far-reaching, as active warrants typically show up on background checks, potentially hindering job opportunities. Employers may hesitate to hire individuals with unresolved legal issues, which can damage professional prospects and reputations. Addressing the warrant promptly with the guidance of a criminal defense attorney can prevent these long-term repercussions. Lustberg provides insight into the protocols for executing out-of-state warrants in New Jersey. Once a warrant is verified, law enforcement can act to detain the individual. The subsequent extradition hearing serves as a vital checkpoint, where the accused can challenge the warrant's legality, present evidence, and argue for dismissal if there are grounds such as mistaken identity or procedural errors. Effective legal strategies may also involve negotiation with the issuing state's authorities. Adam M. Lustberg notes that such negotiations can sometimes result in reduced charges or alternative resolutions, thereby avoiding jail time and minimizing the personal and professional impact. "Tackling interstate law requires diligence and an experienced approach to protect one's rights," Lustberg states. For those facing an out-of-state warrant, Adam M. Lustberg advises immediate verification of the warrant's legitimacy through official channels. Consulting with a New Jersey criminal defense attorney, such as those at Lustberg Law Offices, LLC, can assist in making informed decisions regarding the best possible course of action-whether it involves voluntary surrender or challenging the warrant's validity. Adam M. Lustberg underscores that the extradition process is not automatic and that it entails significant judicial scrutiny to balance enforcement with individual rights. The accused is entitled to contest the extradition through a hearing where potential defenses can be raised. These might include questioning the warrant's procedural accuracy or the identity of the individual involved. The article by Adam M. Lustberg emphasizes that prompt legal intervention and strategic decision-making are essential to handle out-of-state warrants effectively. With the support of a skilled attorney, individuals can manage this complex legal matter, safeguard their rights, and work towards a favorable outcome. About Lustberg Law Offices, LLC: Lustberg Law Offices, LLC, led by New Jersey criminal defense attorney Adam M. Lustberg, is committed to providing dedicated legal representation for individuals facing various criminal charges. HMD has also opened up the peripheral ecosystem to anyone ready to play by offering the specifications and requirements for free. But does the base handset make this worthwhile? "The display should be brighter in this price range, but at least it manages without PWM flickering. The performance of the SoC and the speed of the memory are also only average considering the price. Overall, the HMD Fusion is a decent mid-range phone that gains flexibility thanks to the Smart Outfits. It remains to be seen how many third-party providers will use the open-source toolkit." ( Android Developer Blog ). And Finally... Has the market for applications been growing in 2024? It is if you look at total consumer spending across the smartphone space, although the volume of apps is decreasing.. Split it out into Apple vs Android and there’s a different story: "In 2024, global consumer spending in mobile apps and games reached $127 billion across the App Store and Google Play, up 15.7% from the prior year. However, those increases were driven by Apple’s App Store, as Google Play spending declined." (Appfigures via TechCrunch ). WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that he will not be returning to Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration to be attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump amid growing allegations of sexual misconduct. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, adding that he has “some other goals in life that I’m eager to pursue with my wife and my family.” The announcement comes a day after Gaetz, a Florida Republican, stepped aside from the Cabinet nomination process amid growing fallout from federal and House Ethics investigations that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. The 42-year-old has vehemently denied the allegations against him. Gaetz's nomination as attorney general had stunned many career lawyers inside the Justice Department, but reflected Trump's desire to place a loyalist in a department he has marked for retribution following the criminal cases against him. Hours after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, who would come to the job with years of legal work under her belt and that other trait Trump prizes above all: loyalty. It's unclear what's next for Gaetz, who is no longer a member of the House. He surprised colleagues by resigning from Congress the same day that Trump nominated him for attorney general. Some speculated he could still be sworn into office for another two-year term on Jan. 3, given that he had just won reelection earlier this month.
